Cory Linden, Linden Lab #2 man gone -- fired or quit?
massively.com — An internal Linden Labs memo leaked to Massively indicates that Cory Linden (aka Cory Ondrejka), Chief Technology Officer for Linden Lab is no longer in the picture. What will this mean for the future of Second Life when the developer and chief engineer of crucial things such as the Linden Scripting Language is gone?

- flipmeat, on 12/12/2007, -10/+27It means your SL furry avatar with a huge d*** is living on borrowed time.
- BrandonMills, on 12/12/2007, -1/+9and I paid good money for that huge d***, too :{
- missingnoh4x, on 12/12/2007, -16/+26Second Life is a ***** "game" anyway.
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -4/+10Then don't play it. Go back to WoW or something.
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/12/2007, -1/+6I certainly did, missingnoh4x quite likely did, but that doesn't stop people from letting other folks know. It's good at it's price point though.
- dhdenny, on 12/12/2007, -24/+2An inside source was quoted as saying it was due to inappropriate conduct involving an intern. The Guardian article is here:

Tiny URL'd for easier cut/paste.- EvilDr.X, on 12/12/2007, -0/+10Wait, cutting/pasting is harder to do with a long URL? What, do you have to CTRL+C CTRL+V twice as hard or something?
- bradleyland, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3The only people dumb enough to click that link are exactly the kind of people who copy the URL, open a new window, then paste it in.
I've got a fiver that says it's 2g1c/internetsrsbiz/etc. Any takers?- BenKenobi88, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7I took one for the team, just a RR.

/troll - gullydwarf, on 12/12/2007, -8/+30People are still playing second life?
- spawnfree, on 12/12/2007, -5/+11they are not technically 'people' any more.
- doctorgrim, on 12/12/2007, -5/+5Millions are playing, working, and socializing.

- crisrose, on 12/12/2007, -4/+8Philip Rosedale asked him to leave due to differences of opinion with regards to the direction of the SL platform. The information was released by Linden Lab openly :)
- spawnfree, on 12/12/2007, -4/+12direction of second life?
they run the servers and sell the only currency that can be used in the game. Everything else is done by the suckers. I mean players.
was the 'direction' to milk it, until everyone finally gets sick of the appalling graphics, instead of investing in an overhaul?
- spawnfree, on 12/12/2007, -4/+12direction of second life?
- onlyclave, on 12/12/2007, -9/+15It means another computer industry person has been wrongfully terminated and it's a big scandal because they pissed off Eidos and there is no journalistic integrity in Second Life and now it's time to get pissed and blog about it because we're entitled to the truth! Ron Paul iPhone HD DVD Linux Comcast Halo3!
Boycott!
This is not news.- MDKAOD, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4You forgot Ubuntu and Apple.
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6It is to Second Life residents.
If you don't like it, don't read it. Is that too difficult for you?
Apparently. Don't worry, I'm sure there's an Apple, Ron Paul or Wii article here for you somewhere.
- heatman, on 12/12/2007, -8/+7Yeah I think it'll mean that people will still not care about SL
- Ksg89, on 12/12/2007, -9/+1Left because AW pwns all
- MDKAOD, on 12/12/2007, -3/+1All RCE games are beat. Project Entropia (er..Entropia Universe) has lasted the longest, but just like anything with an RCE, eventually greed will get to AW's dev's and AW will no longer "pwn all" as you put it.
- Ksg89, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1Sure it might not be technically better but it doesn't require one server per 10 users... or somthing stupid like that.

- 01l0, on 12/12/2007, -12/+6More proof that Linden Lab is buying diggs - honestly, would any real person care about this?
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -3/+5Because people actually DO "play" it.
Go back to Halo.
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -3/+5Because people actually DO "play" it.
- mrjit, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4I recently read an article about companies conducting real candidate-for-job interviews via Second Life. What the *****. "Make sure to dress your Second Life character professionally, not have him look like he just came from an S&M parlor or club." Apparently there have been online Job Fairs via SL too.
- Terr01, on 12/12/2007, -2/+5I find it funny when people disguise a Linden-labs press-release as a speculative opinion item, e.g. "Will [ meetings | storefronts ] go virtual?"
The colossal success of computers in business has generally been that they abstract away things.
E-mail is a good example--you don't drag your "paper" into a "virtual envelope" and then "click to lick the stamp" and "drag to your virtual postal box". Similarly, nobody's going to be shopping by crafting their own "virtual consumer" and walking down "virtual aisles". (Again, no matter how much Linden Labs gushes about it.)
And of course interviews are ridiculous simply because you may as well use the phone and get better bandwidth.- guybrush58, on 12/12/2007, -4/+0And you get to hire people who are not sick f****s!
- drlha, on 12/12/2007, -4/+4They should take the details of anyone who ever attended such a job fair and put them straight on the "Do Not Employ" list.

- cfuse, on 12/12/2007, -9/+11Considering that second life is a haven for furries and paedophiles I really don't see why I should care. I'm not interested in virtual sex, either with children or animals.
- krytz86, on 12/12/2007, -11/+8Second life is a fun house for people who like to see their 3d characters fornicating with children. Good ***** riddance.
- DeFex, on 12/12/2007, -9/+7people still play that lameness?
i hope its gone sooner rather than later - dkguy55, on 12/12/2007, -2/+9That's too bad. In my chance getting to know Cory back when beta testing LSL, he seemed like a very bright person who was invaluable to Second Life's success. It'll be a tough loss for the company indeed.
- Sinudeity, on 12/12/2007, -4/+3Play eve, and wish real life was like it...
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4Talk about no life!
I read more books while waiting for jump-gates than I did blowing ***** up. - AlienHairball, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Hey don't knock my spreadsheets-in-space experience! I just reactivated my account after 2+ years away. Yeah I just got sucked in by the Trinity expansion and all those shiny new graphics. It's still all numbers and waiting for the auto-pilot to lead you through 10 jumps just to pick up some new gear, only to turn around and makes those same 10 jumps back... Still I'm having fun at least, even though some asshat who's been playing solid for as long as I've been away came in and flipped my jetcan just to see if I'd take the bait. pfft. Gotta get me some corp mates soon so I can deal with these sorts :)
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4Talk about no life!
- jejones, on 12/12/2007, -3/+9There's a certain irony in reading ignorant posts from gamers, who should be accustomed to and recognize media BS after having it applied to them, swallowing it hook, line, and sinker when it's applied to Second Life and parroting the :"it's all yiffing furries and pedophiles" line of garbage.
- chippoutine, on 12/12/2007, -7/+2Suddenly I have the urge to hold Tim Berners-Lee personally responsible for child porn, flame wars, phishing, botnets and the digg effect.
- ReligionOfPeace, on 12/12/2007, -1/+8It's just another indicator that SL is beginning a rapid slide to the ***** of misfit games. The more it becomes regulated, the less people will go. No one played to have real life impinge upon their fantasy world, but yet, Linden has repeatedly modified their TOS to make it more and more like real life. Put aside the furry avatars and flying and craziness, but consider that Linden has begun to regulate the types of permissible social interactions that first attracted many to the game. That is what is killing the game.
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3One of the issues with a lot of the regulation is that they're trying to make it appeal to IBM and the "universal avatar" concepts, and sell the model to online shopping portals and corporations.
They're trying to sell the platform.
- bjornski, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3One of the issues with a lot of the regulation is that they're trying to make it appeal to IBM and the "universal avatar" concepts, and sell the model to online shopping portals and corporations.
- Nighthawke, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4No wonder SL was taken offline for "maintenance". They were digging around in the code for any trojans or logic bombs.
- Chucara, on 12/12/2007, -9/+4Finally, it seems the ship is beginning to sink. Second Life is the single most overhyped piece of ***** in existance, and I am truely amazed at how it could get so much time and space in the media. Noi
- aliguana, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Good, now Cory can go off and make a virtual-world platform worth using. (req: don't make it dependent on buying/selling things)
- Ripem, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3The bad news is that this is just another mistake of the many made over time by Linden Labs during the development of this type of platform. The good news is that there might be some open sourced competition to secondlife sooner than any of us thought. Kick some butt Cory!
- Toxodont, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Metaverses are definitely going to play a big role in the next few years, it's just that LL won't be the driving force behind their development anymore with their recent blunders. OpenSim looks to be the real opportunity for wide scale virtual world adoption.
- eggfou, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Hopefully they get someone in who can fix things. SL is still super buggy and things are always breaking, things that used to work fine. Meanwhile, they keep adding new features instead of fixing old ones.
- silpol, on 12/17/2007, -0/+3hm-mm, SL is SL, but where Cory goes? I know he won't miss but the place he goes to should be next interesting thing, huh?
- ghoch, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0people still playing mario :)
