DiggFilter vs. DiggSuggest: 3rd Party Recommendation Engines
readwriteweb.com — Digg's long-awaited recommendation engine might be the most anticipated upcoming feature at the social news site. It was first mentioned by Kevin Rose at the EmTech conference last September, and a month later in an interview with Jay Adelson.
- 567 diggs
- digg it
- jasonsalas, on 03/21/2008, -0/+5i was very impressed with DiggSuggest when i found out about it this morning. recommendation was the next logical step for Digg.
- oakj423, on 03/21/2008, -5/+2031 diggs = front page?!?
if (title=="digg") {
frontpagecount=30
} else {
good luck
}- ha1f, on 03/21/2008, -3/+7But, the title isn't "digg". Your snippet is pure fail.
- colto, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Lighten up man it was a joke :)
- HigherLogic, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3if(eregi('digg', $title)) ... :D
- piesforyou, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1I think the algorithm does not just work on number diggs, but on time too. If a story gets 30 diggs in a short space of time, then it may well appear on the front page. It predicts the story will be popular.
- ha1f, on 03/21/2008, -3/+7But, the title isn't "digg". Your snippet is pure fail.
- Ryan0617, on 03/21/2008, -5/+2i like how this got to the main page with 32 diggs. Insider? :p
- chanop, on 03/21/2008, -7/+2but....does it run linux?
- Goonder, on 03/22/2008, -0/+2I assure you, the coming Digg recommendation engine *will* be running on linux. I ought to know.
- fkr3, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3The real contest will be between DiggFilter and Digg "the trademark", with DiggSuggest winning by default.
- Accolade1, on 03/21/2008, -1/+11But is the feature useful? Half of the fun of digg is seeing articles that you were not expecting to view.
- sedo1800, on 03/21/2008, -16/+3digg me down
- loroleg, on 03/21/2008, -3/+13I wish people would stop Saying that low digg counts that hit the front page are inside jobs.
It's in the algorithm to add stuff thats more likely to interest the digg community, Like stuff abut Digg.- sockpuppets, on 03/21/2008, -5/+2The algorithm is kevin sitting at his desk with a latte in one hand and a powerbook in the other.
Discuss.- ha1f, on 03/21/2008, -0/+5Then how the ***** is he pressing keys?
- loroleg, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2Kevin doesn't even need the power book to control digg
He can do it just with the latte
- loroleg, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2Kevin doesn't even need the power book to control digg

- laserblazer, on 03/21/2008, -3/+3Digg beats the living crap out of Fark at least. Farks' Nazi mods can shove their egos up their asses.
- samuelcotterall, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Digg have to issue both of these third-party services with C&D letters over the use of the word "Digg"?
- loroleg, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Not that i remember
Unless you mean DiggDown which got shut down for hosting diggnation early
- loroleg, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Not that i remember
- NoozeHound, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2but when you go to the page it shows 40K+ diggs?
- seandfeeney, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1WTF is up with the digg button on that page?
- JoshCatone, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4It was just a graphic to go along with the story. It's a shot of the most dugg story ever: http://digg.com/tech_news/Digg_This%3A_09-f9-11-02 ...
it's not actually a clickable button.

- jetboyterp, on 03/21/2008, -0/+20DiggSuggest is a good app. I still say the worst part of Digg...and what it really claims to be...is how a small number of submitters (msaleem, mr babyman, et al) still control the front page based on that algorithm. Every story, as I see it, submitted by anyone, should have the same opportunity to grow, maybe even hit the front page, as any other story.
It's just gotten tiresome to see the same people, submitting the same stuff, every day on the Digg front page...which for most is the first stop, and many after...the only place they stop. Just sayin'...- digitallysick, on 03/21/2008, -2/+3Mr Babyman is not a person, but a cybernetic organism, a learning computer.
- fkr3, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1No, he's just a fat man with a sad hobby.
- digitallysick, on 03/21/2008, -2/+3Mr Babyman is not a person, but a cybernetic organism, a learning computer.
- digitallysick, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1How about a "see whos digging you down" engine.
- tonytopper, on 03/21/2008, -2/+2Maybe I can stop getting berated with Barack Obama propaganda.
- allholy1, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3the hell, why does it say 47967 diggs on their page, and only 83 diggs on digg.com?
- whitej, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2it's called pulling a fast one
- JoshCatone, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3Nah, it was just a graphic I put on the story. That's the number of diggs that Kevin's screw you the MPAA over the AACS encryption code got (or at least, how many it had when I made the image last night)... just paying homage to the most dugg story ever.
I don't think it would have gotten this story more diggs, since it was just a graphic -- i.e., it isn't clickable at all.
I'm actually surprised this story did make the digg fp... I wasn't expecting it to at all.

- secleinteer, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1That's just a pic.
- whitej, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2it's called pulling a fast one
- neowolfwitch, on 03/21/2008, -3/+1@sockpuppets-
Have you SEEN DiggNation? Have you seen the Digg parties? No way in hell would Kevin have a latte in his hand. - D3ADBOLT, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2I'm sold...as long as I can block Kevin Rose, Jay Adelson, that other blonde douch from DiggNation, DiggNation, and Hugh Jackman stories
- felixguy, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1"...Robert Allen, a level-60 mage and self-admitted virtual bioterrorist"
lols - Rysac1, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1This kind of thing will be implemented in Digg very soon...
- HigherLogic, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2I like DiggSuggest better, it had some pretty interesting articles actually, and most of them had very little diggs, so it wasn't stuff I had already seen on the frontpage of Digg in the last couple days (like DiggFilter gave me). Plus, it's a lot faster than DF, which took like 36 seconds.
- shawnjooste, on 03/21/2008, -0/+0Hahahah, 31 diggs on front page, now upto 336 ;-) Gotta love the front page!
