Digg: New ad provider
blog.digg.com — "Hey everyone I wanted to give you a heads-up before the official announcement is made later today. We've signed on Microsoft as our new partner to sell and serve the ads on Digg. It's a deal similar to the one Facebook signed with Microsoft last year."
- 2813 diggs
- digg it
- superpatty, on 10/10/2007, -14/+386..And let the digg/Microsoft bashing begin...
- jaredvolkl, on 10/10/2007, -21/+236I wonder how much it hurt Kevin's Apple pride to sign a deal with the devil (aka Microsoft).
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -29/+70Probably not even one little bit.... I see no indication he's one of those anti Microsoft / pro Apple / open source evangilists common around here. Digg's a business, nothing more.
- Masna, on 10/10/2007, -49/+6Digg's a business, nothing more? You honestly believe Kevin feels that way? Noob...
- darkyoshi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21You would too, if you were getting the same paycheck he does.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Which is what?
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -4/+46"I see no indication he's one of those anti Microsoft / pro Apple" -- then you are CLEARLY not paying attention.
- Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+48Have you been watching Diggnation?
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -32/+22No... frankly I have better things to do then get 2 guy's perspective on last week's news while they sit on a couch drinking beer. I'm really not in the age group that show targets.
- Microdot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23
and the contract for kevins soul was writ in blood. - windwaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4kevin has a 360 and sometimes praises microsoft on diggnation. It isn't as black and white as Alex would have you think (he may love Apple, but he still likes Microsoft).
- Masna, on 10/10/2007, -49/+6Digg's a business, nothing more? You honestly believe Kevin feels that way? Noob...
- TomP, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22What an ad?
- unloud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Whataburger!
- mittortz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28Maybe his pride,
but it sure didn't hurt his wallet! - OwdenBowden, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5YES the Dark Side is strong with this one.....
- celkin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Today, Digg. Tomorrow...the WORLD!!!
- jpmonkeycat, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10I just don't get it. Bill Gates has given more money to charity than anyone ever, and yet everyone seems to be drawn to Steve Jobs, who, by most accounts, is a big jerk. I realize that Microsoft is not so much Mr. Gates' company any more, but it's been like this for some time now.
- wirah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1LOOOL
- TokenUser, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Why would it hurt? Microsoft sell products for Apple computers as well.
- GoldenIsotope, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Wouldn't Jay have made the decision and not Kevin? Afterall, he IS the CEO.
- wirah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Probably. Kevin rose just sits around putting umbrellas up his bum and watching cp
- moudig, on 10/10/2007, -8/+5Kevin's a fag anyway.
- FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Like it or not world runs on money.
Google probably thought that given that Digg is full of *nix and Apple fanboys Digg will have no option but to stick with it and they decided to give Digg a ***** cut in the ads. Digg was desperate for money to keep itself going so it showed Google the finger. Do you think that Rose didn't think about all the crap from mindless Google worshipers, of course he did, well it just means that the cut Google offered was that much worse then MS. And for those who think that Google is next to God its more like being next to Devil wearing a Armani Sheep clothing (yes they make that too), if you look through the shiny facade you would see that Google is the hypocritical company on earth (ok not as much as Halliburton), for starters if Google is such a proponent of open source how many of its core products are open source ??? please start listing them, I am sure this page is going to fill up.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -29/+70Probably not even one little bit.... I see no indication he's one of those anti Microsoft / pro Apple / open source evangilists common around here. Digg's a business, nothing more.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -34/+11Well, it won't be bashing if it's ads for the 360. The 360 is cool, but the rest of Microsoft sucks.
Apparently.- RobotCitizen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8If the 360 was cool it wouldn't run so hot.
- bootle, on 10/10/2007, -59/+16DIGG SELLS OUT!! Story at 11!
- RobotChicken1, on 03/07/2008, -12/+53I am really hoping there is NOT a huge outcry over this. MS probably has a lot of money to put behind digg and if they start to get upset when stories bashing MS or praising Apple come out, then Kevin will probably just drop them regardless of money. I was going to end with some OS opinions, but I decided not to, since I'm in the minority (for geeks).
- Godlike, on 10/10/2007, -18/+50Don't let the loudest linux and mac losers convince you that 'nobody' likes microsoft. I support and use their products and for the power that software has it is not pound for pound any worse or buggier than the mac and linux stuff.
- zenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -21/+5Run-on?
- mtheoryx83, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Question?
- ScreaminIke, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Fragment?
- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -22/+11If Digg has introduced me to one thing, its the existence of MS fanboys. Go into any Apple or Linux topic and see how much ***** gets thrown around in those topics, and how any insightful topic gets dugg down to the ground, and yet posts about Vista or other MS products gets high marks. I know Windows users outnumber everyone else, but I had no idea that MS actually had a "fan-base" before.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7Thats not fan base, there are companies which you can hire to pollute the internet with "Vista is great", "iPod is great" kind of stuff, And thats open secret.
- TomRemixed, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13You had no idea MS had a fanbase??? It owns the most used OS in the world. Of course it's going to have a fanbase.
- naio, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13You are ***** out of your mind? The moment a MS-favorable submission hits the frontpage it is instantly flooded by anti-MS whores. Not to mention those hate stories populating the Linux/Unix section (most of them from schestowitz).
- Fartag, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5I try to respond to naio, but Digg has suddenly hidden the reply button after a session reload, I know it's around here somewhere!
@naio
No, you'll see the reasonable comments dugg down to hades as the team of Microsoft astroturfers makes their way through a few social networking sites. It isn't subtle. Do you think Microsoft is dumb enough that they don't realize social networking sites provide "free advertising" by sending handfuls of employees through it now and then to skew the numbers and post only pro-Microsoft things? Wouldn't that be most effective when combined with targeted ads? Heck, why not do both!
It's too late, the facts don't point to MS's favor anymore. Migration to Linux and OSS can be slowed but not stopped by gaming the system.- LoopyChew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My question to you is, what stopped them from doing these kinds of things before? You think they'll give carte blanche to their special covert Digg Ops team to run amok now that they have advertising? No, if MS really wanted to astroturf, I think they'd have been on here long beforehand.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -7/+9Vista is a good OS.
Not sarcasm, and I don't work for MS.- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's a good OS, I'll give it that. However, so is FreeDOS. The point isn't really whether it's good. To me, it's what is the best. And for some people, Windows is the best (for example, it's best for my sister because she needs certain apps that are Windows-only). However, I don't think that people who are only going to browse the web should bother with Vista (or any version of Windows, for that matter), because you can get everything that those people need (a web browser and perhaps an e-mail client [although webmail is so pervasive these days...]) on a cheap Linux box. In fact, I recently built a Linux box for $125 ($70 for CPU & motherboard (onboard video), $20 for the case+power supply, $20 for Hard disc, $15 for DVD-ROM drive, and I used an old monitor/keyboard/mouse that I already had). That was all that the family I built it for needed. But a Windows license would have doubled the cost of the computer.
- wirah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1You live in a state of disrepair
- zenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -21/+5Run-on?

- aluminumpork, on 10/10/2007, -5/+48Hey now, there's no reason to bring the puppies into this.
- superpotential, on 10/10/2007, -18/+3awesome, i HATE dogs. i hate it when i decide to take a nice stroll through the neighborhood or some village, and everything is all peaceful and serene and then some dog decides to bark the hell at me and scare me even though i'm not entering property. other dogs roam the street and do nothing but bite people and walk upto me and sniff me, but hell, i have a ***** right to my personal space not to be sniffed and at the mercy of the dog of whether or not i get bitten and mauled to the extent that my veins are popping out with blood spewing everywhere like you hear every other day in the news... child mauled by dog. they do no good in this world. they are nothing but small wolves. puppies are just the beginning. they are carnivorous beasts. they are not good pets!!! if you want a pet, try something that doesn't hunt down meat, like a rabbit or something. it'll be far nicer to you.

- bluenullity, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39There are not ads on digg just hot women with odd teeth.
- tonaros, on 11/14/2007, -3/+15Are you referring to the snorg girl?
- Misos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25No, he's referring to the vector-based Prudential Life Insurance ad, which hasn't a girl in sight.
- chriskeyes, on 10/10/2007, -19/+3Adblock + IE7 = no ads for me. If Digg makes a good deal, good for them. We're all happy and ok.
- chriskeyes, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1I don't understand. Why am I getting Dugg down? Lots of guys already mentioned using adblock and they didn't get dugg down. I just want to know why users are doing this.
- superpotential, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13congradutalitons, you just identified the reason why you're being dugg down.

- DavX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Yeah, except that this site went to hell and now is filled with far lower quality content.
- SocialPoison, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13I for one welcome our new ad-serving overlords.
- lcmatt, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Just because you might have the userscript (or even worse you actually typed that out) it doesn't mean you have to use it in a comment.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -14/+12Free $$$ for Digg so they can continue work on the forthcoming porn section, Microsoft looks even more foolish than before because they don't realize that 90% of Diggers hate them.

- ifuckurmouth, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Man, this only makes MS look even more lame. Take back the several million dollars you just gave Kevin and use it to hire some developers who write software that doesnt suck.
- jasmin888, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I'm just LOL nice thread, always loved the dog fight between MS, Apple and LInux.
Noticed how the Linux fan-boys are becoming less and less vocal?
You know why?
The fight is essentially over. Only a bit of anti-DRM quipping is heard from the corners but that's dying out too. - birkoph, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4I guess Kevin Rose will Love Microsoft more. NO more apple huh Kevin?
I'll give you a $100 to eat my poo. You'll do anything for a buck, won't you , you dirty dirty girl. - Asianwaste, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2MS Digg?

- Ssullivan, on 10/10/2007, -104/+25I can hardly believe you signed with MS kevin; then again I can't blame you if they offered you enough cash. The ironic part is that your servers run Debian GNU/Linux haha.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -11/+27For a long time after microsoft bought hotmail the servers were all on linux.
- Ssullivan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20Actually it was BSD. Dugg you up anyways because it was a good point regardless.
- naio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Migration takes time, you tards!
- GoodOldJacob, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3The images section will be as big of a failure as the videos section.

Most ignorant comment of the day. MS will be serving the ads, not the technology or servers.- Ssullivan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Which is completely unrelated and not at all my point. I said it was ironic having MS ads on a site hosted by Linux servers...understand?
- DavX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yeah, because Microsoft ads aren't anywhere on the internet that isn't using Windows servers.
I'm sure we'll see Visual Studio and SQL Server ads soon, since this isn't a horrible place to target that.

- imdeanlabouty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+44I too might normally be bugged by this, but if he's talking about an images section, and he probably is, it would indeed be "images [section] is coming."
- McGrude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+63I think in this case 'images' is a category, therefore the singular verb is correct.
- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It would be if he was going to post pictures of the deal with microsoft. He was likely referring to the much anticipated images section..which indeed IS coming.
- escheriv, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15If he's talking about an "images" category, then "images is coming" is correct. It might be worded awkwardly, but the verb usage is correct.

- willclarke, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Technically "images is coming" is grammatically correct because it refers to a category, which is singular. So it would be "[an] images [category] is coming."
- slipgrid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Thanks for reading the article for me. I really thought he was referring to image ads, which exist on this page already, and are nice to look at, because they are all the Snorg girl.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -11/+6Why not just remove Linux section and move your servers software from OSS to MS software ?
I would just like to know the name of that ***** who made that decision.- macewan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Mine is a house of penguins also but business is business. I'd gladly pay $20 a year not to see ads period.

- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Just be aware that with the $$$ will come Microsoftie PR trolls.
There's already at least a dozen of them here, the blatantly obvious shills who write comments emphasizing MS PR Talking Points like "I love my Zune", "I have no problems with Vista on my three year old laptop", and "It's not cool to hate Microsoft anymore.

- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27I love the new comment system but Firefox freezes for 5+ seconds every time I open a Digg story (show all, truncated to 50 comments).
- dracostimpy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23The feature I like is when I try to expand hidden comments and says "fetching 6 replies", then only shows me four. It's especially cool when one of the missing two is my own comment so I can't read any replies. Has anyone else noticed this as well?
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes...i have noticed it. i especially like it when you click "show comment" and all that is displayed is blank white space. nothing ftw!

- they, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm right there with you. I'm often unaware of different sites that have popups/banners/etc. It doesn't make me look good when I send people to sites with all sorts of java trojan downloaders and the sort, yet I never knew any better, as I'd never seen it.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I didn't know Digg or Youtube had ads... until I used my roommate's laptop.

- bilangew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I feel your pain there... theres a setting (which is oddly not enabled by default) which helps: enable "Temporarily allow top-level sites by default" "Base 2nd level Domains".

- TheSpore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I've used Adblock but only because 99% of websites insult my intelligence by displaying extremely annoying ads. The only non-annoying ads I've seen are the text ads on Google.com and maybe a few other Google ads that don't interfere with the content.
It's definitely possible to have both advertisements and a great website, but Google seems to be the only one that's stepped up to the plate so far. - jasmin888, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I saw the headline and thought exactly: "Digg has adds? Never seen one!" Great to see this is the norm.
Fine if Digg can earn some change from serving adds to those still using IE. If you like MS's browser you gotta love its commercials. LOL
On the other hand Digg might be a little worried, if they somehow try to force us to watch those adds I'll probably be gone by tomorrow and not looking back. - ed67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I suppose it's possible for me to see the ads, I'd have to suspend adblock plus and refresh the page. Using ubuntu though I don't even have IE to view digg with. I take ad blocking completely for granted, even to the point of forgetting there's alternatives to firefox and ubuntu until an article like this pops up. Thank goodness for open source.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Hmm. It seems Kevin has dugg Pluckie's comment. Does this mean he approves of Adblock?

...or at least with some punctuation?- dannysullivan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Hmm. Allow me to quote from the instructions that Microsoft and Digg sent out to various news outlets, including ours:
Before heading out for the evening I wanted to give you a heads up to a significant news announcement Microsoft is making tomorrow. Please note the following information is under NDA until 12:00 pm PT Wednesday, July 25.
At that time, Microsoft will announce its exclusive agreement with Digg Inc., an online destination for users to discover and share the best content on the Web. Specifically, Microsoft will be the leading seller and provider of banner advertising and sponsored links for Digg, similar to its deal with Facebook. These activities have previously been executed by Federated Media and Google.
Currently, the deal is set for three years and covers advertising from US traffic only, with the opportunity to expand from there. The transition is expected to occur in early August, however, consumers won't notice a change.
I've included a draft of the announcement press release below of your reference. Additionally Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, will post a blog on the Digg Web site tomorrow with the news. If you have any questions or need additional information, please let me know.
Didn't say that Kevin would break the embargo he and Microsoft wanted to impose on everyone. Nope, didn't say that anywhere. But he did.
Still, pretty much expected he would. Silly us for actually honoring it in the first place. - dgtljunglist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The point of an embargo is so that their organization releases the information first, with the correct spin. If they released the information at the same time as everyone else, what's the point?
It's their embargo, they can do as they please. Don't act all offended.- dannysullivan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, that's not the point of the embargo at all. Embargoes are designed so that the organization does NOT release any news until the time that it has asked all the news outlets to wait. Think about it. If you tell the New York Times not to publish until 11am, then you go live with news at 10am, everyone starts reporting the news when you go out with it. So why bother with the embargo?
That's the way embargoes work. I know, because I've dealt with well over 100 over the years. Digg broke their own embargo. I'm not offended -- I expected them to do it. I'm just bemused that Kevin posts about wanting to give Diggers a "heads-up" before the official announcement when yesterday, many in the media got that news. You could have gotten the heads up last night like I did :)
- dannysullivan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, that's not the point of the embargo at all. - dannysullivan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Hmm. Allow me to quote from the instructions that Microsoft and Digg sent out to various news outlets, including ours:
- SupaFupa, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1It would seem as if annikan has decided to turn to the dark side. But by doing so will simply make another, more superior service more powerful than they could possibly imagine.
There is another skywalker...........
- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -8/+44ENGLISH *****, DO YOU SPEAK IT?!
- mcm297, on 10/10/2007, -12/+4Go Microsoft, go aQuantitive!

- gadlaw, on 10/10/2007, -30/+195What ads? I use firefox and adaware. There are ads on the internet, who knew.
- bpapa, on 10/10/2007, -22/+6Why would Kevin digg this comment up?
1 - The guy is taking money from Kevin's pocket
2 - This comment is made every time that there is a story about advertising on the internet. People actually think that they are some kind of clever hacker because they use certain Firefox extensions, and want to share with us how cool are l33t they are..- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8By that logic, I'd say he dugg it up because HE HATES MONEY
- untzboy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Then how did MS get involved, and WHO TURNED OFF MY CHEAP TRICK AT BUDOKAN TAPE? Surrendaaaa!
- bpapa, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Doh, -11 Diggs... I guess we have at least 11 l33t hackers that I offended. :(
- SniperXPX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why? He isn't aloud to digg up random comments?
- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8By that logic, I'd say he dugg it up because HE HATES MONEY
- MasterQ, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15digg, like many other companies, probably gets paid up front for putting ads on their site. they could give a ***** whether people actually see them or not. kevin probably uses adblocker himself...
- angrykeyboarder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3But payment is typically made based on clickghrough. If nobody clicks on the ads, no payment is made. This contract Digg has entered into might be somewhat different, however.
- MasterQ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This isn't the way it works for big corporations. Microsoft pays digg so much per year for their ads. It may go by page views, but hell... we are viewing the pages whether we see the ads or not
- HUKI365, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2People who install add-block are HIGHLY unlikely to lick on adds anyway, so will make no difference to stats.
- angrykeyboarder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3But payment is typically made based on clickghrough. If nobody clicks on the ads, no payment is made. This contract Digg has entered into might be somewhat different, however.
- quikboy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Yeah, I use adblock on my IE7 and I don't even have to bother with the ads. But hey, if they made a deal, they made a deal. No problems here.
- Nobiting, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4IE7? I didnt know noobs like you hung-out on digg.
- quikboy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Noobs? Excuse me? IE7 happens to be better when you're using Vista and XP SP2. I bet if you'd actually try it, you might like it.
- Nobiting, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4IE7? I didnt know noobs like you hung-out on digg.
- zongamin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2you mean adblock?
- bpapa, on 10/10/2007, -22/+6Why would Kevin digg this comment up?
- gregdogum, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3Jeez, this only too 20 minutes to get on the Front Page... is that a record yet? "22 minutes ago submitted, 2 minutes ago made popular"
- SupaFupa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I think the submitter has some pull.
- trik, on 10/10/2007, -22/+8Sell outs... well guys time to move on, digg it's been fun.....
- Nick22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12How are they sell outs? They signed an ad deal, they didnt suddenly block MS storys, moron.
- untzboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Or become techstitutes, i.e., G4
- RedX28, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1i agree, Micro$oft is buying influence
- Nick22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12How are they sell outs? They signed an ad deal, they didnt suddenly block MS storys, moron.
- TacticalPenguin, on 10/10/2007, -18/+27Signing on with MS so they can put antilinux pro-MS ads on all the pages with the word linux?
- MrSarcasm, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8That would keep balance with all the zealots posting their zealotish anti-ms prolinux comments on all pages with the word "microsoft."
- Fartag, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Please don't confuse wisdom for zealotry. The only anti-MS comments that matter are those that stick to the facts, and facts shouldn't be unnecessarily limited.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Then they would need Linux ads on the Microsoft stories, just as a balance against all those Microsoft fanboys praising their latest product as if it was the best thing since sliced bread.
- stimpack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Yeah, I hope the Digg team will have some integrity and not allow adverts of the 'Get The Facts' kind, that's a fair portion of their demographic to allow to be bashed. Otherwise I don't care who the ad partner is.
- vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5You are kidding right? I'm guessing the Linux and Apple sections will be filled with "The WOW starts now" and "Get the Facts" - because let's be honest, Microsoft hates any form of competition and would go to any length to kill Google, Apple, Linux etc. Now that Microsoft has a hand over Digg, I also expect any story about HD-DVD cracks aswell as anti-Microsoft stories will be removed.
If Digg don't do this, I will be surprised - and very pleased and I'll also admit to being wrong, but I fear I'm not wrong which worries me.

- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13OMG, WE SO CARE
- over9, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17BRACE FOR IMPACT!

- untzboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5MS is actually pretty polite about their ads; i dont remember even seeing a rollover lately.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, Like Netscape story.
Once everything is over, you will get a big ad saying "All your bases..."
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, Like Netscape story.

- prelude619, on 10/10/2007, -57/+13whatever, as long as digg is still digg who cares who serves the ads!
http://macosxhacks.blogspot.com/- fugazi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Apparently you manage to post ads on digg for free and ones that are not blocked by adblock.
- SniperXPX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Did Kevin digg up or down this comment?
- zyl0x, on 10/10/2007, -25/+9Well.. see you guys later. Time to go back to newsgroups.

- dgtljunglist, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1In Ads? Let me think.... Google?
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Uh yeah, and also don't forget NBC and I think Yahoo qualifies in the ad space as well.
- KSDigerati, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5I'm getting kind of board with digg, it seems every day more and more crap makes it to the front page, it's not the digg of headlines I'm interested in anymore. I don't care about the ad's
Hey Kevin, Are you glad you waited in line for your IPhone?- Skeuomorph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Among the many things driving down quality at Digg is the typical user's total inattention to grammar and spelling, making the comments so annoying to literate types that they feel compelled to stay away to avoid getting dragged down too. Sentences end with periods. Multiple sentences should be separated by periods or semicolons if the thoughts are tightly coupled. Homonyms should be spelled according to the intended meaning. Apostrophes should be used to indicate possessives or dropped letters. Capital letters are not used to introduce a new phrase mid-sentence. Read enough such comments at Digg, and one just might forget how to write.
- paulmike3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'll tell the guys I'm paying that are forcing you to surf digg to back off.
- Knullare, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4bored*
- DMan928, on 10/10/2007, -7/+69If they lose the snorg girls, I am so outta here.
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Microsoft needs to pay the snorg girls a few hundred thousand just to advertise every product they try and sell. I dont care what your selling, just write it on the snorg girl's chest and I will pay attention.
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3PLEEEEEEASE don't get rid of the Snorg Girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- fugazi, on 10/10/2007, -15/+2diggdown...
- Obelisk79, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6Well, I support a move like this. Business is business in my opinion. However I'm surprised the outcries have not started yet with all the anti-Microsoft guys.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Because many users are not even caring to comment before they are leaving. I guess they are not even reading comments.

- multitude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I hate it when people say "business is business." What are circular statements going to do to change things in society?
- aeoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I know... what the ***** does it mean "business is business"? A is A. B is B. What is that? A tautology? An identity principle? Business is itself?
Or does it mean that, as long as we label it "business" then all ethics and morals are now suspended? If that's what it means, then I'll shove a pitch fork up the ass of anyone who says "business is business" and by saying it means that morals and ethics have no place in business.

- civperc, on 10/10/2007, -18/+77Congrats to Digg
(I'm being serious) - tony4moroney, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4***** hit the front page in 22 minutes.
I dont reall care personally congrats digg on signing up microsoft.
Now with Facebook and Digg serving ads it looks like MS is in a nice position to take google on.- dstrack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So true... MSFT is finally really putting their ad-biz in order... huge Xbox Live ad-machine, etc... Competition is good.
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -6/+60Digg has ads?
- iamdeirdre, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4I surf in Opera, so I didn't even know Digg had ads until I just looked at the site through IE. Huh. How about that!
- chriskeyes, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0IE7 has an option/extension for adblock too, if you didn't know.
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yea, but you have to use IE....

- Raian, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3Here is an Idea-- if you don't like Microsoft, Click through the ads so Digg gets paid, and Microsoft's sponsors have to pay out big time.
- pandasonic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3But isn't the idea behind this deal for MS to also make money from the ads?
- AdamFromMyspace, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Yeah, by buying their product.. if you just click the link and don't buy the product, then it works......
- pandasonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Ohhh that makes sense. I got it now. Click, I shall.

- 3drage, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Here here!

Bye.

- monomyth, on 10/10/2007, -9/+14advertisement is evil, so your choice is only natural
- peterwschlamp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3you guys are ignorant. advertisements keep digg free. maybe they should cut the ads and charge everyone monthly instead right???
- joepaterno, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Can we please take a 30 day hiatus on use of the word evil? It's now used as an adjective for everything some douchebags(monomyth) don't like.
- Lightspeed2, on 10/10/2007, -20/+103im glad to see microsoft making good business moves.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -15/+6Worst move by digg.
- KillerX, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9Yes, I'm glad they can buy into anything they want! Awesome move. "We can buy our way into cool, that way the young lemmings of the world will become life long MS lemmings."
- Dylson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Lemmings.
- Griffology, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought it was Apple that had the Lemmings? ;)
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Yeah me too. Why not digg team go to get the facts page and read about TOC,ROI,ABC,123 and become self enlightened and discontinue using Linux. Because Microsoft says windows is much better than linux for businesses.
Thanks. - bhattsan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Yes, obviously Microsoft would WANT to post ads in a generally pro-Apple, anti-MS site /sarcasm
- aeoo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Of course they would want that. There are Microsoft ads on Slashdot. It's a shame, but very few businessmen rely on principles and morals when making business decisions.
I believe it's getting better, but it's not getting better fast enough for me. I wish more people woke up and realized that all their choices have impact. You cooperate with someone like Microsoft, and you promote evil in the world by doing so.
- aeoo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Of course they would want that. There are Microsoft ads on Slashdot. It's a shame, but very few businessmen rely on principles and morals when making business decisions.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1....right because Digg users are inherently vulnerable to ads... only Microsoft.
- TheRealPod, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2If I got an ad-free digg w/ a pownce subscription I would be all over that.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'll take the ad-free digg. You can keep the pownce.
- awesomeface, on 10/10/2007, -7/+30"a more scalable technology platform to keep pace with Digg’s growth."
Are you kidding me? Are you going to start using IIS and Sql Server now too?- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Yep on Debian.
- Arch77, on 10/10/2007, -24/+9Digg? There are two ways of looking at this:-
1. Kevin Rose, nice ordinary kid starts website which becomes mega popular. Kid just like you and me gets offered big money from Microsoft to put some adds up. O.K., I'm sure any one of us would take the money and run.
2. Digg sells out!!!! BIG TIME. Of all the companies to partner with Microsoft has to be the most offensive. Digg has become an official turn-off just like MSNBC. It stinks of The Man and screw the fans!
VERDICT: Stupid Move.- dgig, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Hopefully Digg will be just as successful from this joint business arrangement as most of the other companies were who made a deal with MS. I can think of dozens whose name I no longer hear.
Goodbye, Digg.- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Exactly my thaught ?
Does anybody with brain partner with MS ?, The worst backstabber's in the world.
Best of all MS is paying the company who uses open source technologies. - quikboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This is just an ad deal. It's not like Microsoft is going to brand the whole site as Windows Live Digg or whatever nonsense. Gosh. It's just trying to make their ad platform more accessible to users. That's it.
- generalloy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That was with Google. Microsoft is a monopoly and has many products they'd love to promote, and companies they'd like to denigrate.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Exactly my thaught ?
- tokyomonster, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Wow, where'd you get your business degree? You obviously know exactly what you're talking about. /sarcasm.
The ONLY affiliation that digg and MS will have is that the ads that will be featured on digg will be selected by MS. That's it. They won't have any editorial say, it's not going to change to msdigg, you're not going to see Digg.... sponsored by microsoft. Microsoft was probably offering more revenue for EXACTLY what the old ad company(federated media) was doing. More money = ability to expand, hire new people, develop new features, etc. This is not selling out, it's business 101. Deal with it.- Arch77, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4My Innocent friend. Thanks. And I suppose you've gotten a girl halfway pregnant.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2WOW, I always thought digg is all about democratic content.
Now I am eager to see MS get the facts ad's just next to Linux posts on the site that is powered by Linux.
Thanks. I have been banned 2 or 3 times before, But I kept coming back because of digg. But lately I learned some hard lessons about digg. I have been gud boy until now.
Bye.
- dgig, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Hopefully Digg will be just as successful from this joint business arrangement as most of the other companies were who made a deal with MS. I can think of dozens whose name I no longer hear.

- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wow, Users pay subscription fee to read user submitted stories.
- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, you'd pay subscription fees to the service that allows users to submit. Digg costs money to run, this isn't USENET.
- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wow, Users pay subscription fee to read user submitted stories.

- quikboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well actually, I use the adblock thing on IE7, so technically, we all aren't using Firefox with adblock. Plus the fact that Firefox only has 25% of the browser market, that's not really everyone. But I get what you mean.
I just use IE7 is all. And we are considered people too.- freedomknight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2but digg has 70% firefox based traffic.
