- Jebus, on 10/12/2007, -46/+7If you are wanting to sign up for Deamhost you can use the REM97 discount code. This will give you the max discount of $97 you can get with their affiliate program. Ends up costing a little more than $20US for a years worth of prepaid hosting. It's a very decent service for a very decent price from a very open company. I do not work for them, but I am a happy customer.
- madferret, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34Just use promotional code 9999
You'll receive $99.99 off - thrakath, on 10/12/2007, -34/+4Um, no. The max discount you can get is $97. Like, if you used the promo code ECC_97 you'd get $97 off. I agree with Jebus - superior service! They are *very* open, even when they make mistakes...transparency is rare in hosting companies.
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Why whenever someone posts a topic about DreamHost, everyone spams promo codes?
@thrakath, the 9999 code is valid, and not spam. DreamHost created this code themselves.
Speaking of DreamHost, they just upped their bandwidth to 2 TB/mo and space to 200GB... wow, that's more than my hard drive. - craive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11http://dreamhost.com/hosting.html
Has the code right in the middle of the page, above their plans. - ashchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -17/+10Unfortunately, you will never reach this 2TB/month limit since dreamhost uses a cpu-minute cap to limit you. Basically, your processes can only use the CPU for a certain number of minutes per day, which effectivly means you can't actually reach their advertised limit.
Other than that, their prices are quite reasonable. - pootify, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Actually, as of May 2006, Dreamhost no longer has CPU minute restrictions. Now it's mainly "as long as you're not crashing the server".
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/V8.05_May_2006 - i440, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0I will upload hundreds of audio files to this service, all in pristine protected WMA format for your enjoyment
- Jebus, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Ok, when I was there earlier today after reading this their new site was not showing up and I did not see the 9999 code in effect FOR TODAY ONLY. If, say, TOMORROW, you wanted to sign up for an account and wanted to save the max you will ever get then use the rem97 code. Jesus, make a code so that friends and strangers can get the max discount and get buried and called a spammer. I love people.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Now it's mainly "as long as you're not crashing the server"."
...and they say if you are, they'll just try to move you to a faster server.
- madferret, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34Just use promotional code 9999
- pootify, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Topic links to the company blog, which explains the philosophy behind it. Here's the actual site:
https://files.dreamhost.com/- flameboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Arnt they going to have problems with people "selling" songs they dont own the copyright to?
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@flameboy
i dont think _they_ will have a problem with it. - farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7GOD I love dreamhost.
- phileplanet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I just saw this in the panel
"During the beta, it is $5.00/GB to store your files forever. This is a one time fee .. it is not per month!"
I think it's still pretty good.- whfsdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Mine is free to store during the beta. I'm assuming DH is basing the beta price on how long you've been with them.
- mnordhoff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0During the beta, the price will be anywhere from $0 to $8 or maybe even more depending on when you signed up. I'm lucky enough to get $1. :)
Edit: Oh, too slow. - AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Mine is free during beta too. I've been with them for 2 years now. For those of you who don't have it free how long have you been there?
- ickingfudiot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I've been a customer for over 3 years and it's $9/gb :(
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've been there for about 2 months and I got 9.00.
- Elias1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The price is definitely NOT calculated by how long you've been a customer (not alone at least).
I've been with them just under 2 years and I got $6/GB.
I signed my friend up a month or two ago and he's getting $3/GB. - phileplanet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Okay, I just tried this out and for my 32MB Short film, it costed me $0.19 I have been with Dreamhost for about a year.
Not bad I would say!
https://files.dreamhost.com/330/What_If.mov - serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mine is $1/GB and I've been with them since 6-8-05.
- KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Does anyone think that this is just a sales stunt? Think Godaddy commercials.com
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23What GoDaddy has in boobs DreamHost has in features. It's not a sales stunt.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Perhaps.. but unlike GoDaddy, Dreamhost is an awesome hosting company. I've been using them for about 4 years now and I can't even remember the last downtime I experienced.
- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1absolutely, I can't see this working either, there just isn't a market for this anymore.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can, in fact it happened today, while they were switching out the hardware after a crash. But it was over within 15 minutes or less.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's not a file sharing service. It's a "have your own iTunes store" service.
FTA:
What is it?
It’s a new service (during the beta only open to DreamHost Customers) that allows you to sell your own digital files, a la iTMS.. but with a few key differences:
(you can 'share' the tracks you've bought with friends, but that's not really the focus. This is an iTunes competitor, not a bittorrent competitor)- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1mp3.com? whatever happened to them anyway....???
- forteller, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Actually, they recently started blocking BitTorrent:
http://torrentfreak.com/dreamhost-back-to-blocking-bittorrent/ - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"mp3.com? whatever happened to them anyway....???"
They went under *years* ago, it was bought by CNet. They moved the artist service to music.download.com ... for a while the MP3.com domain was some hokey "music tech" and general info site. Though from the looks of things they're opening up artist pages on MP3.com, even though it appears to be sold out to the major labels. So they'll kinda be picking up where MP3.com left off. - cheesy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trusonic signed with 250000 of the artists of old (non c|net) mp3.com and partnered up with http://www.garageband.com
- rodon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I wonder how long forever is.
and btw, its not $5/GB for everybody. For some its $9/GB. I guess it depends on how long you have been a customer with them? - steveo2112, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7It would be nice if Dreamhost put this much work/effort into keeping their customer's sites up and running...
- heresy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4I agree. Dreamhost hasn't had a very good track record for stability and uptime, especially lately. I guess you get what you pay for.
- robinvfr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had DH for about two months now. I haven't had a single issue.
I moved to DH from HostDime (HD hmm...weird). I was with HostDime for nearly two years. In the beginning things were pretty good. But for the last 3 or 4 months, on a daily basis I would get sql errors every night at around midnight for about an hour. When it started to happen during the day, I figured it was time to move.
So far I've been VERY happy with DH. I love the fact that they increase my storage by 2GBs every week! Yesterday, on their 9th anniversary, they increased my storage from 60GBs (which was enormous in the first place) to 400BGs! Plus, they offer 4TBs of xfer bandwidth! That's unmatched. - bzboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Yep. These guys roll out new stuff all the time, but they can't keep basic services up for long-time users. They BLOW.
- ThePharaoh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I've got DreamHost and I absolutely love it. This is just another service that makes them that much better than any other hosting company.
- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2I've got a better idea, lets just start pirating software and better yet OPENLY PROMOTE STEALING AND PIRACY at our company!!! I mean imagine how many pirates will flock to our servers. I wonder how quickly the feds will start busting down everyone's doors.
I'm also taking bets on how long it takes Apple to send a cease and desist. I give less than a week.
I love dreamhost, but they're taking it a bit far now. They need to pull back quickly.- mpeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10how are they promoting piracy when their service allows the legitimate owner of the music to sell it through the net for a low fee?
- electrogeek, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Here's a piece I wrote on legally cracking DRM on iTunes songs. It's a piece of cake and it's legal. Most people should know about how to do this but you would be suprised how many don't. You can read it here:
http://www.electrogeek.com/blog/2006/09/18/unprotect-drm-itunes-songs/- whfsdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7 electrogeek, it's not really a crack + there is quality loss.
- vammirato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't you just burn it to cd and rip it back if you really, really want to?
besides, only .01% of my library is iTunes. Most still come off cds I've bought so I've got full rights on them.
Digital RESTRICTIONS Management
- legbend, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Can't wait for it to go down... http://www.dreamhoststatus.com
- darwin22, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6great, new features without fixing the e-mail problems that have been plaguing my dreamhost account... just what I need!
- snubber, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5hey dumbass this is to sell music you own not via itunes. This has nothing to do with file sharing. Marked as innacurate.
They're making a music selling service that has all the advantages of stealing music, no drm and unlimited downloads but with the legitmacy of paying for that privlidge ONCE.- epchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't think it's suposed to be limited to just music either. I imagine you can sell just about any digital content you create: pictures, literature, art, just about anything.
- thespace, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Goodbye Dreamhost, I'm moving my hosting, you all have gone nuts. You're asking for the RIAA to sue the ***** out of you.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You're an idiot. Did you even read the article, or comments, or replies to your moronic, misinformed comments? Obviously not. The service DOES NOT promote piracy, it's for artists to sell their own work over the internet. It's for small-time and indie bands.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1The fact that they're putting themselves in the line of fire like this pretty much guarantees that I would never use them as a host for a website of mine. Sure, it might be fine now ... but it wouldn't be fine when the feds decide to confiscate all of their hardware as part of an investigation leaving me without a website.
- superdoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6man, dreamhost just redid their whole site
looks good - empirikal, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2To bad their service has been ***** for the past few months... just go read their blog archives and see the constant downtime, errors, fires and whatever else. Actually on their redesign they show their status blog and it has an problem as I type. LOL.
I was with them for 2.5 years. the first 2 were great, but they've outgrown their ability to have good solid hosting.- Madbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd like to see you keep hundreds of servers up and running 24/7, if you compare the amount of servers they have down compared to how many they actually have it's a very low percentage.
Granted, they had some major network problems earlier this year, which have now been sorted and they've explained this really well on their blog.
The new site design is nice. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'd like to see other hosts who are so candid about their downtime that they post it on the web for the entire world to see.
It's a sign of confidence in their systems. Given that they're one of the largest hosts, it also makes sense they're going to have more downtime than normal (think WoW/Blizzard) versus FF11.
- Madbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd like to see you keep hundreds of servers up and running 24/7, if you compare the amount of servers they have down compared to how many they actually have it's a very low percentage.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Anyone know of a good site that reviews web hosts?
- doomsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't have a recommendation for a web host review site, but incidentally, DreamHost has a blog talking about just how scammy many of those review sites are!
http://blog.dreamhost.com/2006/05/04/web-hostings-dirty-laundry/ - xero9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ has some good threads. Might want to check them out
- doomsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't have a recommendation for a web host review site, but incidentally, DreamHost has a blog talking about just how scammy many of those review sites are!
- c0nsumer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I just moved away from DreamHost and back to my own server. I haven't finished the write-up of the problems I had with them, but here's a short list:
- Lots of downtime.
- Very slow network at times, ~20 second returns on simple "select all from foo" MySQL queries which return one row.
- Spam filtering is half-assed and their 'default' blacklist blocks legitimate traffic.
- If processes go over a CPU threshold, it appears that a 'killall' for all of a user's processes is done. Thusly vi sessions were being killed while I was editing things.
- Will not commit to CPU thresholds under the guise of 'security'.
- Suggests running processes which were regularly being killed (PHP running Gallery) as separate users to work around their CPU restrictions.
Hell, when I was with them Google was unable to download a complete sitemap from my gallery because the sitemap generation process would be killed not long after requesting it, and Gallery would regularly break as 'convert' was killed while generating a page of thumbnails.
I'm working on a more formal writeup of the problems I had and will include quotes from support people there. I'll submit this to digg once it's done. (Probably a few days.) - Slackwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Glad to be a DreamHost user. :D
They always keep pumping out great new things, it's definitely the best web host I've ever had. :P - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Hated dreamhost. For many MANY reasons. I finally found a host that filled my requirements (20+GB store and webdav support) ... midphase.com
- Kubaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been a DreamHost user for years and it's stuff like this that's kept me there.
- podcastnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one of those world changing features. If you can simplify the process of selling non-DRM files form a secure location with credit card processing then there's hardly a reason for musicians to utilize iTunes. The one major benefit of iTunes is the community aspect. People go there looking for music so maybe a band will get found.
The current Files Forever pricing model really doesn't work for musicians selling songs, because they would have to pay back $0.55 on each song sold. The model works better for files sold at $1.99 and up. - vammirato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone figure out the formula for the bandwidth charge? I've been here for 6-7 months and got $3/GB. I run the small plan, have a refered a few friends, and hardly use any of my 200GB but a decent amount of CPU.
With regards to the actual service,
DH has been EXCELLENT for uptime...once it gets up. The basic services (dns, email, db setup) take longer than their "friendly whatever robots" claim but seem to resolve by the time service answers the email-only support my package affords.
Still it is a great bargain that is running many, many websites for my company. - bzboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0This host is totally undependable. Outages are frequent. Their support is weak. Excuses are rampant. NOT RECOMMENDED.
- randost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The bottomline for Dreamhost is to not use the shared hosting for critical websites. I've been with DH for 4 years now. I've experienced multiple downtime and email issues among 4-5 clients the past 9 months or so (infrequent downtime but present before this).
Unfortunately, adding these services seems to have drawn them away from the core resonsibilities of providing consistent uptime (across all servers) and decent email performance.
That said, while most of my new critical sites go to shared hosting providers like ICDsoft or Site5, I keep my basic DH account because of the ability to have unlimited sites, subdomains and massive storage for other projects that just aren't that important.
