DuggMirror - We all use it every day - Time to show it some love by digging
duggtrends.com — Digg and DuggMirror allow all of these other sites to reach fame and fortune. How about giving duggmirror a little love and respect. We owe it to them to get as many diggs as possible. If it weren't for them, you won't have seen the Top 10 ways to XXXXXXX or the Google trick to XXXXXX. If this hits the front page, what will happen? Loops?

duggmirror only 'steals' content when diggers use it while the original site is still up. However, duggmirror provides a valuable service if and when sites that are linked by digg collapse. - bryant, on 10/12/2007, -7/+158@canadian guy:
So the gist of what you just said is that google, too, has stolen every little bit of content on the web with their "Google Cache."
And not to mention Coral Cache and WayBack Machine. - lukeamotion, on 10/12/2007, -72/+4@ babe "toasted"
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -14/+99@canadian guy
How do you think that duggmirror pays for all the bandwidth it uses? Let me tell you that it isnt free, nor is it cheap. Therefore there must be ads on the site in order to pay the bills.
Do them a favor and click on some of the ads on their site too. - paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+68@canadianguy33:
"They basically steal content when it's popular and benefit from the ad revenue"
They use at least some of that money for decent bandwidth and servers.
"while the authors get ***** all."
If the author wants lots of money from ads, they need the bandwidth and servers to back it up.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chandlerkent/151619703/ - adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52I'm actually curious about what would happen if a mirror of a mirror actually took place.
For this to happen, you would have to submit an article of a non-existant page that would eventually be created by duggmirror. E.g. You would have to submit a digg article linking to something like: http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/this_is_a_dugg_mirror_test
Then when you physically go to http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/this_is_a_dugg_mirror_test, theoretically it should go into an infinite loop and screw up the server unless they have a safeguard against something like this.
I created an article.. digg it so we can see what happens.

- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5To play Devil's advocate, how long do you think it would be before I received a cease and desist from Kevin Rose's lawyers if I were to create a Digg Cache site that mirrored every page of Digg(you know, for cache purposes *cough*) and surrounded it with my own revenue-generating ads?
Sites like this, no matter how useful to people who just want to read the posted article, are still a bit of a gray area(is it really considered Fair Use in this case?). Whether it be for caching purposes or not, they're still generating revenue using other people's content. Whether the original server crashed due to the Digg effect is a moot point. The content still belongs to them.
/off to cache every page on Digg and make some money - adamsucks, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1You sounds like jealousy to me, Arkonnan. :)
- babemgnt101, on 10/12/2007, -11/+115Haha, wow thanks guys. So a few questions were posed. First of all, sorry about posting my website, it is just a habit and I do it on most forums. Second, that was my prom date from a while ago, not my sister or my girlfriend (don't be a player hater). I took down my personal info (thanks for the advice), I never really thought about it because nobody ever actually goes to my site (evidenced by the site design!). For everybody that buried me, I'm sorry it truly was accidental. Uhh yeah, have a good day.

javascript:window.location.href=window.location.href.replace('digg', 'duggmirror'); - GR3G, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Wow, I have a headache now. Not sure if it is from the colors of your blog or from reading all the replies to your spamming the board.
- canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -26/+12So I got dugg down huge. However, aside from the slap remark towards duggmirror what I stated was fact.
Some people are arguing that Duggmirror is doing the same thing that Google is by caching pages, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Google caches ALL pages that it deems as relevent regardless of the traffic/popularity of the content. Google's purpose is to index the internet and make it searchable, whereas duggmirror only caches the popular content that will generate ad revenue. Google doesn't generate revenue or display ads on cached pages.
Also, those of you that are saying that duggmirror only displays ads to generate money for hosting greatly over estimate the cost of bandwidth to run duggmirror.
Let's be honest here. How many digg articles do you see with a stupid duggmirror link in the comments before the original site goes down? - lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6@canadianguy33

- gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -51/+6DuggMirror is one of Diggs' best features. It's proof to how much traffic Digg gets (even if it does drain the badwith of other sites). After the bandwith is gone, the page is usually shut down, but not with Digg - This is one of the many reasons I use Digg and rely on it for my everyday news.
- IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+96DuggMirror isn't owned by Digg. At least, I think so.
- freehunter, on 10/12/2007, -24/+4Yeah, DuggMirror is separate from Digg, but it seems like Kevin would have put in a feature like this. I am surprised Slashdot and Fark have not done so, either. However, I don't really think they need to be dugg to have popularity. Their main focus is only when a site is shut down, and even then someone in the comments posts a link. If people start going to DuggMirror rather than Digg, Digg loses. People get pissed when Microsoft steals ideas from Apple/Linux/Google/Another company/software who can never be evil, but we are lauding DuggMirror for doing the same?
- bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Slashdot does have a mirroring site - http://www.mirrordot.org/
I don't think it's owned by them, but that is also the case with duggmirror afaik. - dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8there are copyright issues associated with caching web pages. from my recollection (someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong) this is why slashdot (and digg, i'm sure) won't have an official mirroring service. it'd just be a legal nightmare if someone gets their panties in a bunch over getting cached. slashdot and kevin et all would much rather have some independent third party to shoulder the legal burden (not to mention bandwidth costs) than take it upon themselves.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I am almost willing to bet that duggmirror is owned by digg but they wont fess up to it because there would be so many legal issues around it. ethere way who ever runs it i must say thank you.
btw we should start a fund raiser to buy dugg.com for them would be a lot easier only have to change one letter instead of whole domain - muldoonaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2mirrordot is owned by Deru Internet Services, an ISP here in Arizona.
- SimonDonkers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14From the Slashdot FAQ ( http://slashdot.org/faq/suggestions.shtml#su900 )
"Sure, it's a great idea, but it has a lot of implications. For example, commercial sites rely on their banner ads to generate revenue. If I cache one of their pages, this will mess with their statistics, and mess with their banner ads. In other words, this will piss them off.
(...)"
The same would apply for Digg. Mirrordot and Duggmirror are to my knowledge both independent sites not run by the official site. That means Kevin Rose doesn't have to worry about copyright issues for this.
Now go digg me down for linking to the competition.

Better yet automatically direct you to it if the original server is down. Of course the "Digg Effect" could be eliminated if the top 50 or so stories were cached on diggs server (with acknowledgment of the original URL). Once the stories get pushed back then the links could be restored to the original locations.
- DiggityDugged, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2kicking myself for not thinking of this. i tried digging dig.com before but it never caught on
- stacky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Possibly because you spelt it wrong...
- Zal91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't think digg would "support" this, if they did have a mirror it would be of their own, with digg's ads.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3we'll find out if this is read on Diggnation.

- Barleyman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I also use http://www.duggsearch.com a lot.
- flarn2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what if this suffers the digg effect? what will we do?
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, going to http://www.duggmirror.com/ in a new tab (or another way, just not by clicking so you get to its actual main site instead of a mirror page) reveals a pretty nice site on its own, with each Digg article having a DuggMirror link. Maybe not all have actually checked it out, I know it took a while for me to do. :)

FAQ
What is DuggMirror? DuggMirror is a site that allows users of the popular news site Digg.com to see popular links that may have gone offline or slowed down due to the so-called "Digg Effect."
What's up with the ads, they're annoying and aren't you taking money from Digg by doing this? The ads on our homepage are the normal Google Ads for Digg so a click on that will benefit Digg, not DuggMirror. We show ads on every page that we mirror to help cover hosting/bandwidth charges. 90% of profits (if any) from those ads are donated to charity: half to EFF, half to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.- mojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Right on. I was going to post the same thing. The people that run DuggMirror are just geeks that love Digg like the rest of us.
- rbabiak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I would like to see Diig have a link on the headline to the duggmirropr cached version. i hate having to go through the comments looking for a post of the duggmirror link.
just a little request.- KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just open an extra instance of the comments page in another tab and replace "igg" with "uggmirror."
- jsc315, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3never used it and never will.
- pdworkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Thank you for sharing.
- Lixie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I like duggmirror, I just wish the comments helping us out wouldn't be buried.
- arenas46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2pop the toasters done. out pops babemagnet....
- KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not out in time for this week's Diggnation, but I hope it gets on next week's.
- bigbird1040, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yay for submitting stories that will be easily dugg so that you can get a nice ego boost.
- Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THANK YOU DIGG MIRROR!!
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmmm...Let me write a cease and desist letter for www.diggmirror.com
- darshil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1maybe duggmirror needs to duggmirror itself
- royaltea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i swear it takes me longer to read the comments then the articles on digg. the reason why i love this place.
- BETA7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1duggmirror should only be active for websites that have already lost too much bw because of the digg effect, if not then their basicaly stealing and leeching the glory of that website....
- Onibus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rbabiak
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/1807
Adds Duggmirror, Coral Cache, and Google Cache button next to title. Just need to have Firefox and install the Greasemonkey plugin and you're ready to go.
and @BETA7
Sites don't go down because they've "lost" too much bandwidth; they go down because the server can't handle HTTP requests AND data requests.
Not our problem that a blogger decides to submit a WordPress blog to the Digg Army.
And how does mirroring a site constitute stealing and leeching the glory of a website when that website goes down (while keeping the website's ad running) - kakifry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1assgrab?
- thesixthdesign, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Why do we need a mirror? Digg.com is never really slow or anything ..
- Books, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait, are we just trying to see how long till we can knock down DuggMirror? Mwahahah, this is genious!
