GoDaddy Offers .Me Domain Names. It’s a Big FAIL So Far.
mashable.com — A few hours ago at 11am,Since then, chaos has ensued, as purchases are either not going through, or going through but the domain name remains available for others to buy. As an illustration of the problem this creates, according to the Twitter message below, at least 8 or 9 people are claiming to have receipts for the domain name "aweso.me"

- MelanieSchmitt, on 07/17/2008, -6/+34We knew the .ME Open Registration response would be tremendous, but it went beyond even what we had expected. As a result, we experienced some system issues in our communication with the registry.
As soon as we became aware of the issue we began taking steps to correct it. It is now resolved.
For our customers, if we did not successfully register the domain name requested they will receive a full refund.

Go Daddy Communications Manager- TheNeptune, on 07/18/2008, -16/+11This is a correct response! It's unfortunate that a lot of people couldn't get the domain they wanted, but GoDaddy was still honoring first come first serve... it's unfortunate if due to an error someone thought they bought a domain that had been previously registered but in the end everyone received a fair outcome; the first got their domain and those after got a refund and apology.
Perhaps GoDaddy incorrectly forecasted the demand - but remember that these companies are run by PEOPLE and people can't be perfect! They do well in customer service, their support are all American workers located in America, you're not dealing with outsourced support. It's unfortunate but it's unfair to blame GoDaddy when they go the extra mile and the expense to try and secure the best support for their customers.
Buy from a foreign registrar or someone who outsources support, but at the end of the day GoDaddy does have the best customer support and all their "controversies" have always been due to their diligent work to insure fairness (copyright) and enforce American laws.
People hold companies like Apple and Google as proxy-gods... all the while Google is monitoring your every move and Apple is charging you a large premium on imported Chinese electronics.
Try to think rationally folks. - Myonosken, on 07/18/2008, -2/+17Except GoDaddy are now flogging on some of the popular domains themselves- even the first person in some cases is now without a domain.
- Backstab, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3The first people are the ones who registered the domain during the land rush, which if they were the only one requesting it, they got it. If not, they are going up for auction.
- macdaddy357, on 07/18/2008, -12/+44The .me domains are totally unreliable, crashing most of the time. The .xp domains that will replace them will work great and everyone will want to keep them, but will be forced to "upgrade" to .vista domains that can slow down a T3 line to the speed of a 28.8 kbps modem.

- dieselburner, on 07/17/2008, -4/+137So it seems like godaddy used their site to find out what the popular urls would by tricking you into registering them.
THEN they moved them over to an auction site so they could reap the rewards.
They basically registered all the .me domain names for themselves and are going to make tons of money selling them off.
I guess they were tired of selling things for $10 and seeing others sell them for $50K. Oh yeah, and they were tired of being an ethical company. Has anyone started the lawsuits yet? - TWiThead, on 07/18/2008, -1/+19Was GoDaddy ever an ethical company? Years ago, I tried to register a domain name with them, and I was greeted with page after page of attempts to sell me extra services that I didn't want. When I realized that they also tacked on a hidden fee (to deceptively lower their advertised price), I rushed back to my usual registrar (which charges roughly the same and doesn't engage in these sleazy tactics) and never returned.

- NikkiA, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7Nope, they've never been ethical.
Back in about 2000, I received a letter from GoDaddy, telling me that my domain (with netsol) was about to expire (it wasn't), and if I didn't fill out the form and return it to them, then I would lose my domain.
The form was, of course, a 'transfer to godaddy' authorization. - ho0ber, on 07/18/2008, -0/+15@NikkiA

- arjie, on 07/18/2008, -1/+4For what it's worth, here's my story: GoDaddy once stole a domain name that I was foolish enough to keep searching for repeatedly on their website search-for-domains thing. I was really young, and damn excited to have a domain name so I kept searching for it and then it got parked. Bloody hell! It got parked courtesy of GoDaddy.com. It's since got another legit owner who also parks it, but still man, it sucked.
So I got another one instead. But still, no fair.

***** Bob Parsons! - mjfarina, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Your comment is horribly inaccurate.
- dieselburner, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0i have since found out it was inaccurate.....I don't know about horribly. godaddy was still used to find out what the popular domain names were. they still charged people for the domains, and multiple people for the same domains. and it's still a ***** way to do things. and if you're just an average person and not an in-the-know domain squatter it looks pretty damn fishy. for something like this i still believe in first come first served. oh well, i'm moving my domain names somewhere else because how they handled it, but at least i know what landrush is now.
- Backstab, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Good job at knowing how the system works.
- microchp, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2No matter either way. I have already blocked *@*.me on all the corporate email servers I manage. It is obvious that the spammers have grabbed most of them. The same patterns they grabbed for .info and .biz are already taken.

godaddy, make this right and give me the domain i registered.- amba, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3I registered a .me domain during landrush a couple of months ago. It will go to auction in the next couple of days, as will any landrush application that had more than one applicant.
So you're right- "someone else" already registered, there's a chance that somebody was me, and I got in before you so I have more of a right to it. So there ;) - dieselburner, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2So you're saying they only had a couple months to prepare for this? Well then they're excused. *rolleyes*
IF that was was case they should have FIRST OF ALL NOT LET YOU REGISTER IT!!!! or second mailed something out saying this was landrush time and not that sorry someone else registered it.- piwy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1i'm pretty sure the rules of landrush where right there on the .me page.
It said right there that if multiple people tried to register the same name it would go to auction. - dieselburner, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1What it comes down to is, like the article states, godaddy failed. They failed to warn people about the landrush period. Even just a link underneath when you try to register a .me domain saying "Understand landrush". I, like almost everyone else, just knew that .me was opening up. They failed to take names down after they went to auction. They failed to coach their customer service people on possible mad customers calling. Unless you count "play dumb and try to get them to reregister their other domains". I felt sorry for them yesterday.
The only thing they didn't fail at was taking and holding your money (and the other 9+ people of each domain who tried to register) and collecting interest while we wait for our refund.
Whatever, I'm moving my domain names to another registrar. This was just handled way to *****

- darkane, on 07/18/2008, -1/+13I've got some bad news for you. mailed.me is a worthless domain name.
- callingshots, on 07/18/2008, -2/+12there were so many problems with the .me registration, but if you did your research before the registration period you would know why.
when a new tld launches, eeeeeeeeeeeveryone is going for all of the best domains. taking an hour to register them should come as no surprise. there were plenty of companies with resources better than a single computer on a cable connection to try and reg those good ones, plus individuals.
it was really stupid of godaddy to allow people to register domains that where already registered in the "landrush" period. that made no sense. if you got your hopes up over one domain, well, you dont know how to play the game. i regged many at a time and was happy when only a few did not get errors.
overall though, doubt .me was a .fail. yes, plenty of problems, but it seems like many thousands of the .me domains were registered today. - MAGZine, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Only missing that .you tld now...

.ME is available! - toecutter169, on 07/18/2008, -2/+13So waiting a few hours for something to not happen constitutes a 'fail'?
Someone needs to stop using 'fail', it's getting 'old' as an internet 'meme'.- abcda, on 07/18/2008, -0/+14you mean me.me?
- JudgeMonkey, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6trying to do something and having it not succeed is actually the very dictionary definition of fail.
- toecutter169, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I meant that in the context of the internet, merely waiting a few hours isn't long enough to see if something is a success or not.

- mattlohkamp, on 07/18/2008, -1/+10domain parking / squatting is pretty dumb. Should people be allowed to do that?
- BinderGang, on 07/18/2008, -2/+3So people buying real estate and let the house sit there empty as they try to sell it for a profit are dumb to? Should people be allowed to do that?
- psevium, on 07/18/2008, -0/+11If people are living on the street because they can't afford the markup? Sure
- grinndaddy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+6The failure of our economy from it says no, they shouldn't.
Besides, as psevium pointed out, that's apples and oranges. Domain squatting only lends to hindering progress and is in no way beneficial to society. Hindering progress = bad. - bubbadoo989, on 07/18/2008, -2/+3Based on your real estate analogy, most of the good homes would be owned by a couple of cybersquaters from China. Right, dumb-ass?
To answer your question, no they should not. - atcrawford, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2If they make improvements to the real estate then they can sell it for more than they paid. Otherwise they would only get the value they paid plus inflation.
- mattlohkamp, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1real estate is a decent analogy... hmmm... supply and demand, I guess... and you could always make the argument that the domain name isn't important, it's the way you market your brand. On the other hand, what about issues of ip-infringement? If you owned nike.com, you'd have a case if you were making a site about nike, or even something about the greek (or roman?) goddess, but if you're just sitting there with a page of ads, you're basically soaking up nike's traffic. I don't know. Bears more thought.

I already keep the .tv domain blocked at my firewall! I have yet to see a .tv domain name that contains anything that is both useful and unavailable at any other site! I could count on my fingers the number of .tv domains that I actually have found information formatted in a more useful, or better-organized way than the same info on another domain!
There needs to be a market. There is none. at most it will add confusion for those vain enough to use .name!
Just be creative with .com, .net and don't fear such domains as .us .ca, .uk, .au etc.- Dylan16807, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1twit.tv? Completely unrivaled in the digg podcast area except by diggnation itself?

la.me - Zordar, on 07/18/2008, -1/+12GoDaddy is a waste of space. A friend lost her domain because GoDaddy sells lists of "about to expire" domains to spammers and porn sites. She went to renew her subscription two days before the deadline and was told someone else already paid for it in advance. She fought it, but two days later her domain name resolved to a porn page. She had to wait until it expired the following year, as GoDaddy ignored all of her attempts to get it back. She promptly moved to another registrar and never had issues since.
- ahawks, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Fantastic, i have my domain hosted there and now you have me worried.
- cawpin, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Zordar - *****, there is a grace period even after your domain expires where ONLY you can get it back.
- linuxpenguin, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I see some room for confusion. Your statement uses "is" which assumes the present, but his uses "was" which implies that this happened some time in the past (I can assume at least a year ago).
I've heard of GoDaddy doing this sort of thing. Maybe now they've realized how gay it is, but that doesn't mean they never did it.
