Google Sites now open to everyone watch!
googleblog.blogspot.com — A few months ago we launched Google Sites exclusively as part of Google Apps for companies and organizations that wanted to use the service on their own domains. Now we've made it easy for anyone to set up a website to share all types of information

- digg it
- DerangedPenguin, on 05/22/2008, -34/+6Hellllooooo anyone here. here.. here... here.... here?
Kind of a cool idea... I have been using Google Documents for about a year now. Fast and easy way to share shopping lists and documents with other people.- darkzealot89, on 05/22/2008, -0/+21You would have been OK if you didn't have that first line in your comment -_-
- RedS0x, on 05/22/2008, -3/+1Thanks for the relevance!
- winmywii, on 05/22/2008, -0/+13I think that comment was made because digg now says stupid things when there are no comments. "No Comments!
It's quiet in here... can you hear the echo?" - n3tfury, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4lol, shopping lists
- RedS0x, on 05/22/2008, -1/+16I remember this being googlepages. It was really simple, but too hard to position things that are your own code, or a widget, say.
- sdrumsalot, on 05/22/2008, -1/+6First, I just want to say I love most all of Google's apps (this one is a little late to the game), but I can't stand the bland, dull designs of any of them. I know Google is all about less is more, but for God's sake man, add at least one freakin gradient, hire some graphic designers, everything is so white. I like using apps that not only operate well, but are beautiful and fun to use.
- zongamin, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3You seem confused - there are option themes for these sites.
Adding a gradient for no reason is stupid- its not 1995 you know - sdrumsalot, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1The reason is to not make it so dull and boring, it's more visually appealing. Yes the option themes are great, "you mean I can have red borders instead of blue borders, that's crazy". You missed my point Mr. Google employee.

- mediaspree, on 05/22/2008, -15/+14Didn't Geocities already do this?
- RedS0x, on 05/22/2008, -1/+21Yahoo has Geocities...but since they've already launched theirs Google can't have their own?
- marnaq, on 05/22/2008, -11/+4Dude, don't pop Google's bubble.
- nandasunu, on 05/22/2008, -3/+18email? I believe aol had that covered 10 years ago.
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -3/+60Geocities is made of suck.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8And so was most webmail until gmail had the right idea
- ladon86, on 05/22/2008, -1/+66These things are going to litter the internets like pictures of kittens.
- RedS0x, on 05/22/2008, -3/+13http://skitch.com/jonnyl/cbnb/cat-at-computer
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Myspace has shown what the worst could happen from this sort of thing is. It's pretty bad, but still not as bad as that.
- GreyColumbus, on 05/22/2008, -8/+0Can't wait for the nation of Google to uprise.
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -2/+2No, you can't, because It will never happen.
- Labourer, on 05/22/2008, -4/+1Its a trap
- WCL23, on 05/22/2008, -12/+14Great, a web 2.0 version of Geocities back in the day. Just what the web needs. *sigh*
- bokep, on 05/22/2008, -12/+2Looks neat, but facebook already does a good job at doing this.
- Flamancot, on 05/22/2008, -14/+4***** yawn.
- Scottievm, on 05/22/2008, -5/+36How is this any different than Google Pages?
- DeMoNX4187, on 05/22/2008, -1/+15A page is a page...a site is a site. =P
- MavRevMatt, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9If I'm not mistaken Google Sites is what was Jotspot when Google bought them.
- Skeuomorph, on 05/23/2008, -0/+5Yes. Google Pages was a sort of web-based "FrontPage" to make a home page and small web site. Google Sites is a "wiki", and is derived from the Jotspot wiki company they acquired.
- geekm8, on 05/25/2008, -0/+0Definittely agree with you Skeuomorph. This is what I was thinking: kind of wiki. I would say it is rather a "flexible wiki" because you dont really need to allow other people editing your website if you dont want to. So you can build your website in the same way you edit a blog and include other content/feature/sharing in the same way you do with a wiki.

- Labourer, on 05/22/2008, -3/+6Worth a look. I would imagine that the service should perform pretty well . thanks google.
- down1nit, on 05/22/2008, -2/+8sites.google.com/ski-club is a 404 what happened :(
- ladon86, on 05/22/2008, -0/+33It's summer.
- duncewalin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2really? you might wanna check your calendar
- Asim0, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2http://sites.google.com/site/ski-club/
- ladon86, on 05/22/2008, -0/+33It's summer.
- hedgehog001, on 05/22/2008, -2/+4Looks pretty much like Wordpress to me.
Seems decent though. - Blackrites, on 05/22/2008, -2/+3I found out a few days ago that you can get free SMS alerts on google calendar. Been spamming myself ever since.
This sites thing looks ok, can't see it being that useful to me though; easier that starting up your own website I suppose.- DteK, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5I always thought the fun in having your own website was building and administering your server. It is for me anyways
- AgentVladimir, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1er... see the post above about kittens.
- DteK, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5I always thought the fun in having your own website was building and administering your server. It is for me anyways
- jake1986, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Google already has pages.google.com. Weird. This looks more user friendly though.
- ToneDeff, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5User friendliness is the way to go!
- alanr19, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5This seems to be aimed squarley at Microsoft Sharepoint or will be when its rolled out into Google Apps for enterprise.
Good thing too. Sharepoint is a fat useless bastard of a web app.- abandonedhero, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Not to mention it doesn't play nicely with browsers who aren't Internet Explorer.
- alanr19, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3A-men to that!
- captmorgan555, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Amen to both of you. Someone at our company has a giant erection for it so all of our intranet is moving to it :(.
- abandonedhero, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Not to mention it doesn't play nicely with browsers who aren't Internet Explorer.
- teambosun, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Hmm. Seems interesting, but probably won't use--there are plenty of alternatives out there...
- iRelinquish, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3info on Google Sites
http://sites.google.com/site/sites/ - vexingmodstwo, on 05/22/2008, -4/+6Dude lost me with the very effeminate "Hi" in the beginning.
- WomensUnderwear, on 05/22/2008, -2/+0more like a "Hoioooooiiioiioooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii"
- ralphie81, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5Turn your gaydar down a bit.
- vexingmodstwo, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1It was more like nerdar, buddy.
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4"I'm not your Buddy, Guy!"
- vexingmodstwo, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1It was more like nerdar, buddy.
- duncewalin, on 05/22/2008, -2/+1a lot of fags in tech, you just gotta deal with it sometimes
- Vodd9, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Homophobia much?
- 1legend, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I tried logging in to create one for testing but get a Forbidden 403 error? Anyone else getting this?
- alanr19, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Working fine here. They're probably in the middle of a staggered rollout. Give it a day or two.
- flashcat7777, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12That guy was one hell of a typist.
- solsurvivor, on 05/22/2008, -1/+0with a M series keyboard no less
- alanr19, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1It seems that paid Google storage doesn't count towards this Google feature.(as it does for Gmail, Picasa etc.)
That's a pity. One less reason to continue to pay. - zhepp, on 05/22/2008, -6/+1WTS http://sites.google.com/site/diggnation/ and http://sites.google.com/site/revision3
- drgmdp, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1so you are that kind of people...
- jerrybiyn, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Hmm... Interesting, though looks very elementary right now, this might become useful as time progresses. Will keep an eye on it to see what Google is upto with this.
- MOJIRA, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1It's like a crappier version of WetPaint.
- hospitalcio, on 05/22/2008, -4/+3Google waited too long. Now everyone is using Wordpress for a simple Content Management System.
- Labourer, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4Are they?
- hospitalcio, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Wordpress has 3,177,182 "blogs" and counting. Many of them are photo blogs and other web sites that Google Sites originally targeted.
- Labourer, on 05/23/2008, -0/+13 MIL does not constitute everyone on the internets though does it?
- hospitalcio, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Wordpress has 3,177,182 "blogs" and counting. Many of them are photo blogs and other web sites that Google Sites originally targeted.

- Labourer, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4Are they?
- JasonCox, on 05/22/2008, -2/+31Dear Google,
Welcome to the 90's.
Love,
The Internets - mike1251, on 05/22/2008, -2/+3I love it. Good for those with little or no budget. But don't wordpress, and blogger offer this already?
- Shuk, on 05/22/2008, -3/+7I'd assume that their competitive advantage is that their servers won't go down, unlike some other blogs. *cough* wordpress.
- blechler, on 05/22/2008, -2/+7That guy was setting off my gaydar.
- Verz, on 05/22/2008, -5/+5If you can't create an URL with the title of your favorite video game, movie, show or celebrity, that is because I already took them all. And I will sell them on eBay in a few years for thousands of dollars a pop.
I'm an ass. :D - Rauby, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1That Google Sites presentation looks just like Apples Quick Tip of the Week.
- Ganpachi, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Not too shabby. I imagine it will get more and more featured as it progresses.
- tofus, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1dude was rocking those earrings.
- jizzypop, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1too bad its pretty much useless.
why don't the just buy an established cms and make it better?- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Because they did and they are...
Besides, Google Pages is probably the most you'll get out of them as it is. If you wan a real site, get a real server.
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Because they did and they are...
- djcreamy, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5Just what the internets needs, more ghetto web pages. What happened to original designs?
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Myspace happened.
- blackjack75, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I don't where I could link this to a domain though. Is this possible?
- nmnnotmyname, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Maybe, but at that point, get a real server :P
- satellitegml, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1i just hope this doesn't become the next container for internet ***** like myspace.
- thailand1972, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Nothing much new here. And sites.google.com/mysite - that's just another geocities, but I'm sure Diggers will love it just because it's Google.
- Cimlite, on 05/22/2008, -3/+1Your honestly knocking a company that gives you a free service? Really?...
- thailand1972, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2A service can be criticised even if it's free.
- Cimlite, on 05/22/2008, -3/+1Your honestly knocking a company that gives you a free service? Really?...
- Monbosa, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1except the chinese. damn censorship
- sdrumsalot, on 05/22/2008, -2/+0First, I just want to say I love most all of Google's apps (this one is a little late to the game), but I can't stand the bland, dull designs of any of them. - Atomic1fire, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2thats what the themes are for.
- zongamin, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah you already said that you didn't have a clue.
- IAmCuteKitty, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2It has been a great year for snow in the Rocky Mountains.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Now we just need someone with hacking skills to make this better
- jamesmudgett, on 05/23/2008, -1/+1these are annoying
- zongamin, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1ROBOTS!!!
"You specifically agree not to access (or attempt to access) any of the Services through any automated means (including use of scripts or web crawlers) and shall ensure that you comply with the instructions set out in any robots.txt file present on the Services." - Lemon, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Surely by releasing this (obviously they will continue to develop it) it gives people an easy place to set up a page where they can integrate Google Friend Connect meaning people can build their own social networking pages without having to belong to facebook, twitter, myspace etc. Right?
