Google close to buying social news site Digg: report
cbc.ca — Rumours that user-driven news website Digg is close to being sold to Google Inc. have resurfaced, with the internet search leader reportedly offering around $200 million US for the social news site.

Thats my guess.
....and for that matter, why not buy reddit (too)?- Izult, on 07/24/2008, -4/+3frankly it would surprise me to find out that they aren't trying to buy them too.

- digitalpencil, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3they want MEEE!!!
- TheMachine1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Buying a competitor is a very effective way to eliminate or reduce competition. Plus I think Digg uses Microsoft ads if I'm not mistaken. Thats a quick way to strike a blow against their main competitor.
- mrminty, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Yeah, but the user base of digg is probably the most likely to ignore advertisements.
Anyways, how exactly does digg compete with Google? The Google News is nothing like Digg, and vice versa. - TheMachine1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Google groups was "Dejanews" a web base portal of usenet. So that was intended to be Googles "Digg".
- jerrycurley, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2How so? Microsoft has a CONTRACT with Digg. If Google buys Digg, they must honor the contract unless they try to buy out Microsoft's contract.
I don't know how you think that business works, but anyone that buys Digg can't just say "Well, that contract you signed with the old owners is no longer valid" Doesn't work that way.
So the hilarious thing is that Google would be forced to host Microsoft ads for the remainder of the contract.
Of course, this rumor is complete *****, so it is amoot point. - Predater, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Dont most of the Digg users use Adblock anyway?
- mrminty, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Yeah, but the user base of digg is probably the most likely to ignore advertisements.
- michelspc, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6They wouldn't be buying the site. They would be buying the users. Sure Google could create their own site but for a site to be successful it needs users.

- matthewaaron, on 07/24/2008, -2/+10There isn't once ounce of me that could put up with reddit. Maybe if the site looked better, maybe.
- shadowspawn, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Reddit just needs a face lift; I still browse it. It's a cool site also.
Only reason I use digg is to really *use* it, and learn what it does and how it works. I can't hate it (like I hate fark) or love it (like i love some cool sites that are way smaller), but digg is a great site to learn how to do things and how not to do things.
Nobody can blame digg for selling the basic application and I for one won't say anything bad, because hell, it's an effort and a business model. Especially the selling of the users to google either.
I know that *I* would sell all my users out for that amount of cash, no questions asked. My users' account information, browsing habits, email addresses, etc. for that amount of money to just about anyone.
Hell, it was a great run while it lasted. I can't wait to see how they link our google accounts to the digg accounts... could be the whole openID reason.
Heck, adblock even has their advertisers whitelisted. It's a sale that would make anyone proud. - evan2024, on 07/24/2008, -2/+3Why? What would really change about digg?
- SniperGX1, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1Google stopped being "good" the second they bought Doubleclick. What do you think is going to happen to digg if they buy it.
- subliminalurge, on 07/24/2008, -1/+4"Can't blame Rose, though. I'd cash it, too, in a NY second."
He'd better cash in soon, while the site is still worth something.
Honestly, I'm not sure why Google would want it at this point. It's clear from the comments over the past year or two that the majority of the user base is now puberty-aged imbeciles with no income to speak of, and bleak prospects of every landing employment that doesn't involve taking their turn at the drive-thru window..
I suppose if Google advertises to them effectively enough, they could always bug mommy and daddy to buy stuff for them.
And it can't be the technology their after. There's no reason that a freaking web page with a bunch of comments should be able to bring a quad-core PC to a crawl while all of the buggy, inefficient javascript processes.- orlyfactor, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1I hardly think that Javascript uses multithreading to take advantage of all of those cores. I could be wrong, but on my ***** mono-core PC here at work, it runs fine.

DiggNation, web content movers and shakers.- Nysul, on 07/24/2008, -3/+151Digg users are loyal? Whenever the next best thing comes digg will be dropped like slashdot.

You obviously have absolutely NO understanding of internet worth. - BedPost, on 07/24/2008, -0/+16Digg is to Slashdot as Nascar is to rocket science.
Come on, Slashdot isn't even "Web 2.0" - it's just a technology blog with some user moderation. Digg is fun and democratic (which leads to group think), while Slashdot is more serious and much less open.
They're different, and Slashdot was never really dropped. - Nysul, on 07/24/2008, -1/+17@Angostura
Slashdot has 1/2 of its active users compared to 2006.
@BedPost
Web 2.0 is just a stupid buzzword. Since most of the stories end up being submitted by the top 10 users, it isn't really the web 2.0 panacea it is made out to be. Digg tends to be 70% political circle jerk, 20% internet memes/stupid pictures/videos, and 10% tech (90% of which is about apple). Slashdot tends to be a little better, made out of 40% linux circle jerking, 20% unwarranted MS bashing, 10% warranted MS bashing, 10% memes, and 20% tech. - VandyB, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Oh come on?
What do Google normally do? Innovate.
They don't just buy something and leave it... That's exactly why companies go wrong, and why Google is doing so well. - kidd3ckz, on 07/24/2008, -2/+4I used to check slashdot every day, now i check digg every day. I'll check /. when theres absolutely no tech content on digg's front page.
web 2.0 is code for cleancut design and rounded corners, as well as use of AJAX or the implementation of other technologies that provides the end user with a webpage that loads content into the first webpage that they see, with the same layout.
@ALL
I'm so ***** sexy holy *****. - nogami, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@Nysul
Oh, comeon... Did you see the quality of posts on Slashdot around 2005-2006. I'd argue that many of the regular users (myself included), simply moved elsewhere because the quality of the threads went way, way down due to the influx of people who liked to post, but weren't very informed. The same thing happened with Digg - it got popular, and now we have 20 "Top ten" lists on the frontpage every day.
If the active user base is cut by half (and hopefully the half that left was the ill-informed crowd), things might actually be getting better! - diggdeep, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@ VandyB
o rly?
What about Blogger, Jotspot, MeasureMap, GrandCentral, etc.? Even Youtube hasn't seen much "innovation" since being acquired, and the only other acquisition that's still relevant is (arguably) Writely (now part of Google Docs) - subliminalurge, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@nogami
"I'd argue that many of the regular users (myself included), simply moved elsewhere because the quality of the threads went way, way down due to the influx of people who liked to post, but weren't very informed"
I left /. around that time for that exact reason. I'm back there now, and the quality has gone way back up. My hypothesis is that this is due to the imbeciles who originally caused the decline in quality having migrated to, you guessed it, Digg.
I mainly come to Digg these days when I'm bored and feel like telling people how stupid they are. I'll occasionally try to inject some common sense into a discussion, but here on Digg that's pretty much like banging your head against a wall, so I've cut back on that.
- sockpuppets, on 07/24/2008, -4/+83Nobody ever got laid on digg. -300 million.
- TheMachine1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+32Not too many on adult friend finder got laid either that site is one of the most elaborate frauds on the web.
- Nysul, on 07/24/2008, -2/+14I signed up for 1 month of AFF. What surprised me the most is all the girls who signed up "just to talk". What a waste.
- spanishturtle, on 07/24/2008, -0/+16You should be relieved they just wanted to talk, seeing as those "girls" were probably all dudes.
- TomFrost, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6I think what people don't grasp about Adult Friend Finder is that girls as hot as the ones in their ads *don't need AFF to get laid*.
Seriously -- if you knew you could walk to the nearest bar and pick up the hottest girl there, or register for an online service and get fawned over by 400 average-ugly girls.. which would you do? - crxvfr, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Agreed, the only thing the web is good for as far as dating is having millions of people to choose from.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2depends on if you saw the post about the DIY fleshlight
- WTF69, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1So whatever money they get will be in google stock? or how will they get paid
- Speed, on 07/24/2008, -0/+12Yes, very loyal. I mean, when Digg decides to protect themselves form lawsuit by removing a glorified cd key, there's never a revolt!
/s- crxvfr, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Thats what I meant about loyalty. Maybe I used the wrong words, but if Google bought Digg and Digg users didn't like what they did, the same thing would happen.
- MenthiX, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Obviously there is more profit to be made on friendfinder. They have paid subscriptions, the only income for Digg is advertising and the Digg audience doesn't click too much banners either.
- DupontNumber24, on 07/24/2008, -1/+5Dude I click the Snorgtee ads all the time. I can't help it! Those chicks are *****' hot.
- MenthiX, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1If only they sold the chicks instead of shirts :D
- FutueTeIpsum, on 07/24/2008, -1/+6Hold out? are you ***** stupid? In this economy?
I once worked for a start-up that wanted to "hold out" when presented with a $400 MM offer to be bought by AOL...
Needless to say, the start-up went bankrupt...
Stupid asses.. - duckyinc, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2Are you saying sex is < than digg?
- dsenman, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Yeah except Adult Friend Finder has a revenue model...
- kubedawg, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1Except Digg can't get you laid...
- Speed, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Do you really want to sleep with the "chicks" that use AFF, though?
- Nysul, on 07/24/2008, -3/+151Digg users are loyal? Whenever the next best thing comes digg will be dropped like slashdot.
- Fangsinmybeard, on 07/24/2008, -16/+4Oh come on the site is at least worth 1.2 billion with just the global reach Digg has. That is a very soft offer. Google can afford to go as high as 5.7 billion.
- saxmaster, on 07/24/2008, -0/+10How do you know what Google can afford?
- TheMachine1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8Global reach? Digg has English as a requirement. That has to limit its global reach.
- spect3r, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3lol 5.7 billion
- lecentre, on 07/24/2008, -15/+10Wonder what top diggers will get paid?
- teh_techie, on 07/24/2008, -1/+13Diddly-*****.
- sockpuppets, on 07/24/2008, -0/+30A digg t-shirt and a signed photo of Kevin in his jet filled with girls formerly gone wild.
- TheMachine1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5Same people who pay them now.
- Speed, on 07/24/2008, -3/+5And why should they get paid ***** all? We digg the stories, yes, but last I checked, we don't do any of the coding, we don't monitor to make sure illegal stuff doesn't get posted. It's like saying Rick Astley should get money from Youtube for all the traffic Rick Rolls have brought in.
Also, top diggers can go ***** themselves. If Mr.Babyman were to leave Digg today, I wouldn't give a damn, since someone else would swoop in to take his place.- raisedinhell, on 07/24/2008, -7/+3down with babyman tbh, i dont know anything about him but i'm pretty sure he's a *****
- mdurwin, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0Nothing.
- nicko68, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I can honestly say that none of the USERS here is indispensable, so they should be paid (or not paid) accordingly.
- mmijatov, on 07/24/2008, -7/+44The only thing that makes me sad about hearing this is that it further distances Google from that innovative spirit that made me love them . . . now they're just buying up companies all over the place. I'm not saying Google's innovation is depleted by any means, far from it. But I liked it more when they were developing their own stuff instead of just buying whole companies.
- gregmo, on 07/24/2008, -1/+11A good point, but at the same time they are a business looking to turn a profit and when they can go out and buy stable, profiting businesses, and fund them, then the innovation will spread.
I'd imagine that most of the Digg staff profiting from this will invest in new companies and new sites will emerge. It's a sharing of their wealth. Digg gets bought by Google, Google can then keep Digg in business, Digg employees can start new ventures, which will grow into new companies that Google will buy... It's a lovely cycle - radiofrequency, on 07/24/2008, -4/+3Google's innovation is depleted alright.
- gregmo, on 07/24/2008, -1/+11A good point, but at the same time they are a business looking to turn a profit and when they can go out and buy stable, profiting businesses, and fund them, then the innovation will spread.

- Macuyiko, on 07/24/2008, -3/+3Neither, Microsoft isn't involved.
- koko775, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2Neither. Selling to Google is a-ok with me. If you're worried about the iron fist of a corporate overlord, just move to Reddit. They already have corporate overlords and still manage to be pretty good (then again, I only peruse the python and programming reddits).

- Speed, on 07/24/2008, -2/+8And what the ***** have you done to deserve a cut? Hell, you can't even claim top digger status. I would think it's ***** if msaleem or MrBabyman asked for a cut, but a dude who's only submitted 7 stories? And hasn't gotten any popular?
- gcnaddict, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1I personally think if a cut were to be given, it should be
((sellingPrice / 2) / totalPopular) * #popByUser
example:
100,000,000 / a large-ass number * 10 in my case... around1000 dollars or so

I don't see why ANY digger even thinks he deserves some kind of compensation if Digg would be sold. You are just a user of the site, get over it. - DeFex, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1half past never.

- scotishstriker, on 07/24/2008, -2/+12what would happen to diggnation if google owns digg
- Protoss, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1I'm sure they'd keep most of the staff, which would include Alex and Kevin. They might be able to get rid of a few sponsors, which would be nice.
- darkphenox, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5revision3 and digg are separate companies its just they have a close relationship because Kevin was apart of both from the start.
- MistaMatt90, on 07/24/2008, -0/+21Diggnation is owned by Revision3, not Digg
- neFariou5, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Yeah but digg would be a trademark that would effect diggnation
- MavRevMatt, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@neFariou5, true but Revision3 would be stupid to just drop Diggnation. That's their second most popular show. I'm sure it's where a huge amount of steady profit comes in.

ESPECIALLY considering how many users here love firefox and use adblock.
I've never seen an ad on almost ANY website let alone clicked on one. - davidkeithjones, on 07/24/2008, -3/+5This is the same company that bought YouTube. Google got rich by accident, they are a one trick search pony not an investment firm.
- spidoman, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2*Two trick
They made a search engine that is still the best at what it does.
They came up with an extremely profitable, userfriendly (aka not obtrusive), and smart advertising system.

- N01SE, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0Advertising, morons. Just because you use ad block doesn't mean companies don't pay for advertising. Google got rich by being the first to master the online advertising market (which started with their search engine). I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't yet offered to buy the company seeing as they control most of the advertising for the site.

I'm guessing they will steal the comment system and put it on you tube.- vegetables, on 07/24/2008, -1/+19I feel the same way - although I really WANT to hate Google for being a massive conglomeratizing corporation, I can't. "The archives were acquired by Google and reintroduced as Google Groups. Archive coverage was extended back to 1981 with the addition of collections from private sources. - Zaarin, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8I don't think anyone really expected Google to stay the same as it was when it started.
Google is strolling down the same path Microsoft did in the early nineties.- philhatesyou, on 07/24/2008, -3/+4You can make that statement when Google releases the equivalent of Windows 95 and you're forced to use it because of their stranglehold on a market.
- Tralobyte, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Google controls such a large portion of online advertising that they can (some say they already do) put monopolistic pricing on their ad services. This means it's harder for online businesses to prosper, which means consumers will get less choice and google will get antitrust lawsuits.
- philhatesyou, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Large market share does not necessarily mean a company has a monopoly. Come back when you understand 5th grade economics and maybe we can have a real discussion.

- Xios117, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Agh, I just find that it'd be very hard to see the community change so much; i.e. fewer tech articles.
What would we do if we weren't so biased against political candidates?
I mean come on, that'd be a hard pill to swallow.- leodavinci, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2You weren't here in the beginning were you? This community has already changed a ton. When Digg was first launched it was ALL tech articles. The stuff that got to the frontpage was often times very technical. The "tech articles" that generally hit the frontpage today are either iPhone, Linux theme lolz, or some post from engadget.
The new upcoming has somewhat fixed this for me, as I have been able to find a lot more of "really technical" articles, so I'm not complaining to much. Just saying that the community has already changed a ton.

Even Google, famous for buying sites for wayyyyy too much money with no hope of ever recouping their investment (ala Youtube) would never pay that much money forthis site.
- FriedTurkey, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9Kevin Rose should sell now. An Internet's site popularity only lasts so long. Soon Digg will be a Slashdot, Friendster or a MySpace. That Facebook guy is going to be kicking himself when everybody starts talking about how uncool Facebook has become. He should have sold out and bought a vanity business that will last like Mark Cuban.
- radiofrequency, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1facebook is more useless than digg.
- itchyfeet, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Facebook has always been a waste of space. The difference is that data mining companies will pay handsomely for the data that people post on it.
- tiltedfish, on 07/24/2008, -5/+40Dear Kevin, take the money.
If Facebook won't sell for a billion dollars, and Myspace went for 580 million, then I'd say if you can get them up to 200+ million for digg, you should do it. Demand 300 million, start a bidding war, and see what you can get. Right now you have make believe money. Money that's not real because it's in a site and a company that may not exist in ten years. What Google is offering is real money.
Wanna bet that Steve Case over at AOL is really damn glad he turned his make believe AOL money into Time Warner money? Kudos to you for making this awesome site, you deserve to be stupid, stupid rich. Just remember to buy some yachts for your old friends.- radiofrequency, on 07/24/2008, -5/+1Digg should stay private. I thought google should have stayed private. All that money would have gone right into the founders' pockets.
Somebody, somewhere, should figure out how to hold a site privately, profitably and without selling out into a public entity or becoming one, paying off the VCs and taking in the ad revenue and doing this at a scale larger than ever done before. - MenthiX, on 07/24/2008, -1/+8If they were really offered that much... I don't think Kevin is the one making the final decision. Isn't Jay Adelson the CEO of Digg?
- krahzee, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Jay is the Ceo, but it depends on how much of the company is owned by whom, given the share the VC people got, along with any legal agreements Kevin signed with the VC guys to secure the funding (Such needing their agreement to sell, or right to first refusal, etc...)
Just because Digg brought Jay in to be CEO does not mean he can go against the wishes of its owners.
The guys at Google brought in Eric Schmidt to be CEO, but since they still own controlling shares, they can turn around and overrule him on any decision he makes, since he answers to the Board of directors, who answer to the shareholders, where Brin & Page own the controlling number of shares.

- wipis, on 07/24/2008, -2/+15Whats this talk about a cut for the users? Or about the site getting ruined? The site won't change at all. Did you digg because you thought you were doing Kevin a favor? Do you use myspace because your best pals with Tom? If they offer the right price the only difference we will see is that all of a sudden Kevin will be drinking from a pimp cup in the next diggnation.
