- sugarskane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not the prettiest interface =(
- aj1215, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0....cough
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap. I've been working on the interface non-stop for like a week. What don't you like about it?
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the idea, though a redesign of the site would be nice. 95% of people will be turned off by the layout when they first see it and won't even bother to see what it is. Look for some simmple photoshop tuts.
- aj1215, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe you could look into more neutral colors...
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It WAS nuetral before, and everyone thought it was boring looking! I suck at interface design. Does anyone have a nice link to a good tutorial on making your website 'not ugly'?
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0MY EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the interface, you could make it glassy instead of that pattern you have there. Also I would reccomend a more asthetic font for the "Love" and "H8" and make it fit into the black portion.
Ad for the eye, I would make the center white and the edges black, adding a glassy effect to it. - dna3e8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So most of the RSS is un-readable and the Interface just hurts my eyes (color, busy looking...) I am one of that 95% nice idea but it needs work
- xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another vote for bad interface. 15 years ago this might have been "hot". Amateur appearance. In order for the site to catch on it has to appeal to people visually. The information provided isn't going to be important or critical enough for visitors to tolerate an annoying interface. the site youare looking at now, digg.com is an excellent example of clean, efficient design.
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0www.good-tutorials.com for photoshop tuts.
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you ryanmeadows, What do you mean 'the center white and the edges black'? Do you mean white background with black borders(where the grey is now)?
- h3adstr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0yuck-eh
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Make it look like a real eye, where the circle in the center is white, and the star treck-like triangles are black.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0>_X
I'm BLIND! - goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eveyone is suggesting photshop tutorials. Does that mean my images are ugly?
- dna3e8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is like no way to email you, Digg Like??? how is news submitted?
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ryanmeadows - Oh! You meant the love/hate image thingy. Now I see! Yeah maybe thats what everyone m eant by linking to PS tutes. :) Thank you.
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yep
- my12dailypro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0BAD INTERFACE DUDE
- marchukt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0come on guys, have any if u made a digg-like site? but yeah, ill make u a better layout if u want...
- exaviger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this reminds me of the article that was on digg not to long ago about how a user decides if a website is good or not in fractions of a second. well I took one quick look at it and closed it, my eyes casted the final vote.
- exaviger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh and stop being a tool and copying an idea from a site and then using it to promote yours, thats just poor form.
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not just the love/h8 thing needs to be graphically re-done.
- freelance24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree tomuch Color were am i going to focus my eyes
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0marchukt - Email me.

dna3e80 - Email is there but buried under the 'more' thing in summary. Anyhow, you have it now. :)
Everyone else - Feel free to write with any comments/suggestions/rants/nekkid ladies...All feedback is appreciated. - xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Second recommendation: if you are attempting to get a new site off the ground, adding banner advertising to it only makes it appear as though that is the sole purpose of your site. Paid advertising, fine. Adsense may be a bit more bearable than the trash many people add to their sites but if I pay a visit then ads are the last thing I want to look at and I -will not- click on them... ever. I don't care if they help pay for your site or not. Maintaining a site requires some sort of investment on your part, time or otherwise. Build a site people will want to visit before you start trying to make money off of your visitors.
- alex.bosworth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"the goggles, they do nothing!"
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0xst4t1kx - You are correct of course, advertising is evil, but I'm paying $90.00 a month for a dedicated server with go-daddy. Do you have any ideas as to how else I can recoup that loss? I wish I did. :( I can only afford like MAYBE one more month of hosting, before I have to give up on ALL my sites. :(
- Mooseknuckle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I honestly applaud your effort on trying to make something like this, it's not easy ... I too, judged this site as "ugly" in 1/20th of a second ... here are some of my amateur observations now that I've stared at it for a bit longer:
-- The content is on the right, whereas the eye naturally looks to the center of the page for what is important. I sugged making your pulldown menus closer together, and their associated labels smaller and moving them into a narrower column on the left. Doing that would also make the 'feeds' viewable from the main page, rather than causing the user to scroll down
-- The Love/H8 gif plain stinks, and also looks pixelated
-- For the individual headlines ... put them into a visible container. Right now, the top and bottom links per headline float in nothingness with no visual separation around them. Look at how dig does their comments...
-- The headline backgrounds suck ... dont use a gif like that .. use a background color, or a gradient (like digg) if you must.
-- Fontsize on the page is all around too big. If I want it that big, I'll just make it bigger myself. Dont assume we're all grandas suffering from macular degeneration.
You're getting close, and I really dont mind the blue theme for colors ... You can probably make that work, but you definitely dont want your darkest blues being the background of your articles ... save the lightest for that, and use a darker foreground font.
Good luck ... Post a link for your next rev when you have it :) - skez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0holy crap, im amazed that someone who knows how to code well enough to do this site doesnt understand whats wrong with the interface
- Mooseknuckle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0aww cmon it's not THAT bad ... just needs a little TLC ...
- baratunde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0based on the site and what you've said above
- obviously bad visual interface
- the fact that you can't see it means you should NOT be the one to fix it. Not a mean dis, just the truth. This will come out harsh, but it's like having a tone def person produce a music album. You'll need a LONG time with graphics, layout and general interface to be able to judge what looks good.
- i do applaud the idea. I'm interested in Digg for way more than tech stuff. RSS feeds is a novel concept.
good luck - gwash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0awful
- mrinternet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it was any prettier it would be very very ugly.
As mentioned above banners a no no
Always look at a site you admire and use that as a guideline as how yours might look.
People get turned on (or off) in the 1st 10 seconds (or less)
Remember when it comes down to how a site looks plagiarism is the greatest form of flattery.
I will leave content comments to my peers.
