How not to migrate a data center
forum.valueweb.com — After promising users a downtime of 12-15 hrs as part of a data center move, more than 50% of Valueweb customers are still in the dark after 36 hrs of downtime.

- debk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0On Saturday Jeff at ValueWeb tech support said that we were the ONLY customers complaining (yep, that's right--the only ones) and was rude to boot when we questioned why ValueWeb did not do our redirects, as they had committed to the previous week. He said it was our fault for being technically incompetent.

- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+212 hours of down time has turned into 84 and still we no ETA, no explanation, no apology. On top of all of that, the support page that displays your support tickets is not working, and calling the support number yield even less info than the non-functioning support page does.

- frstsite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been a customer of this company for 10 years and that is coming to an end because of this and other errors on Valueweb's part. They just don't think that a dedicated server really is important enough that they can get them online and keep them online. This is my business and I can't have a 12 hour outage turn into 48 hours and counting. yes, you read that right we are still down after 48 hours.

- gator99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Like a lot of people, I was caught by surprise. I did not get an email notice, nothing in the mail, no phone call, nothing posted on their website about the ludicrous migration. Hostway really knows how to hose their customers! There were 4000 servers moved overnight. Which I would estimate effects about 20000-40000 individual or business websites. That's quite a large number of unhappy folks due to inept decisions and planning by Hostway.

- bardok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2We have also been screwed up by this ***** migration... our clients are losing money, and we might eventually lose them... some of them are on-line shops, and their income depends on the web sites we host at valueweb... I think that company does not deserve our confidence... telling my boss we should do a real migration, from valueweb to a reliable host... (in my case, I would switch to a data center in Spain, where our company is located, so if something like this happens again, I can at least drive to the data center and kick some asses... I cannot cross the ocean right now in order to do that in ValueWeb/Hostway :P ).

Nice job guys!! - webdev1234, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am finally back online @ 1:15 AM EST Sunday July 30th 2007 after experiencing outage from Friday 9 PM. Just keeping a track of time for any suit that might arise from this.
- truckAmuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1An opinion may exist at Hostway / ValueWeb that its TOS allows Hostway / ValueWeb to do whatever they wish, with no legal consequences. However, several legal opinions have been offered regarding VW's "99.99% Uptime Guarantee" constituing FALSE OR MISLEADING ADVERTISING. There is also a fair likelihood of its TOS being ruled an UNCONSCIONABLE, ONE-SIDED, AND UNFAIR CONTRACT.
- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Read the TOS of any hosting service carefully and you will see that planned outages are not included in "Uptime Statistics". With that said I believe there is still a case here.
I fully expected that my server might be down all weekend (4-5 times longer than announced), but I never expected it to still be down on Tuesday (8-10 times longer than announced).- weeeezzll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I also forgot to note that only 15 hours of the current 84 hours are planned, that still leaves 69 hours of unplanned downtime which does count towards their 99.9% uptime guarantee. 69 hours of down time means they could, at best, they could achieve ~99.25% for the year. They only way they could ever hope to make a 99.9% uptime now is if they averaged their up times across their entire network on a server by server basis, thus spreading out the massive down time of VW/Gate customers over their vast existing customer base.
In any case they are still incompetent tools...

- Davidmdm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I can confirm that sales will answer and so will the shared support people However, BOTH of them will only say "I cannot help you, let me put you through to the dedicated server support" which is the line NO ONE WAS ANSWERING

- shadowspawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You know, I feel for everyone... but there has to be something else besides wiring and planning that's causing an issue. It could be power redundancy taking its toll at the new installation... not wiring or router management. I've seen power issues at every move of every data center.
I mean hell, at quakecon we got all those computers up and running within 7 hours.
I bet y'all that it has to do with power. - bze306, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0IP address 72.4.161.x I have tried calling tech support and everyone else. Maybe I will try sales.. - dschlaegel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have never heard of this happening before. It was actually up Friday night after the move. And somehow after that it went down and stayed down. If they only have 2 people working on this then I really doubt they even plan on keeping most of their clients. I have had SO many of my clients calling me thinking I scammed them, as allot of them paid their monthly service charge on Thursday, then friday everything is down (including my main site with support). I have never had a good experience of Valueweb, the server was Horrible! It's had HD errors from day one that they would never fix. Just pretend they don't know what im talking about each time. Even with that, I must admit, Host Away is Worse! I will be chaning companies as soon as I can transfer all my data off.

- dustonio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I feel everybody's pain with Valueweb/Hostway, as I've been in a similar situation with my dedicated servers. I have had many angry clients who were calling and emailing me non-stop asking me why their site was down. I've since switched to Rackspace and now sleep soundly at night.
- fcapria, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Over 62 hours down. I've contacted support a few times, and have never been given more than what's been on their pre-recorded message. Word is that many of the ValueWeb employees working support right now are getting the boot on the 10th of next month. Not a lot of incentive to go the extra mile. At this point it's obvious that management has knowingly decided to mislead the customer base throughout this process. I called on Saturday at 6 PM - 17 hours after a promised 15 hour outage. I was told they fully expected all servers up by 7 PM. That was an outright lie. Less than half the servers were up 16 hours after that call.
It's unconscionable that any group of people would treat a group of small business owners so cruelly. Sometime Saturday night someone should have made the call to do whatever it takes to get customers up -- instead, they keep plodding along one or two servers at a time. At this rate it looks like Thursday or Friday is likely. Yes, a full week.
I'm doing what I can for my customers, but they have to regret doing business with me right now.- mekinney, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Hello, my name is Meg Kinney and I am a representative for Verio Web Hosting. - vitalidea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0And now... eternity.... danannaa.... danana... danananana! valueweb.com and their forums are officially offline. Rest in Peaces.
- vitalidea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0And thus ended another life... alas, we knew you too well... unfortunately.
ValueWeb.com is now offline along with the forums. RIP! Time of Death : 4:11pm PST - 07/30/2007- vitalidea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Wow... and now back from the dead?! It's a zombie!! The must have re-started their server...
- vanarie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Valueweb.com was completely down, forums and all, for about 10 minutes. Not sure if it's damage control or if they are finally moving their own company servers over - who knows. I trusted that Valueweb would AT LEAST keep the lines of communication open with a progress page updated every 1/2 hour. If history has taught us anything, it's that when you're wrong you should admit it right away or "cave often and early".
I have a lot of customers who are counting on my services, and though my service isn't mission critical to most of my clients, I may still lose some because of this failure. I was thinking about switching sooner or later, but now it looks like sooner.
Does anyone think they have written on some boxes "kill", because they are unprofitable for them in the long run? Sounds ridiculous, but maybe it's not. I'd be curious to see who is up and who is not relative to the server fees paid every month! - PopeRuss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I have two servers with Valueweb, web and mail. Have for several years at about $500 per month. The web server was up Sunday afternoon. It is now 10pm Monday and no mail server. I have about 100 clients, many doing eCommerce business.... with no mail today... they are pissed.. I AM PISSED!!
Here is a quote from the CEO of Hostway taken from their press release on the Valueweb acquisition.
"Our first and main focus through this acquisition has been to ensure that customers of both companies do not experience any disruption in current services and in fact bolster it further,” said Lucas Roh, CEO, Hostway"

BTW, I spent some time chatting with sales at rackforce.com tonight.. I believe I'm moving as quick as I can. - vanarie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I was considering changing servers, just not so soon. www.sectorlink.com - vanarie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0My business server has been down since Friday night. It's now Monday night with NO progress report or update page to speak of on either website!
I was considering changing servers anyway, just not so soon. I might have just upgraded and stayed with Valueweb, but if that was Valueweb/Hostway's way of saying "get lost", they have achieved their goal.

- albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0My 2 servers are still down ... been over 72 hrs of downtime now.
- vanarie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Update: Old server now online Tuesday 2am - hope it stays on!
- upswing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Valueweb Hostway has handled this fiasco in the wrong way since the start of the server migration. A simple web page with truthfull information as to what is happeening would have helped us understand the pb and in some case allievated the level of frustration that we all feel. Instead they chose the approach to hide the facts and will not commit to resolving the outage within a certain time frame. At this point there are dedicated server customers that still have no clue as to when their server will be back online.
Why can't they say what the pb is ? Why are we all listening to a message recorded at 10:45 am on Monday? How many people are working on this? etc etc. It will take them a long time if ever from regaining any type of credibility. - PopeRuss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The CEO of Hostway is Lucas Roh, his home phone number is (312) 573-1253
- rackaid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0We've helped a few people during this fiasco. In one case the client had SSH access but no web services. Appeared to be a DNS issue but he had already decided to move. Others had off site backups that could be restored.
So if your server is not responding via HTTP, it may be reachable via IP address via SSH. That could allow you to get backups and migrate to another provider.
ThePlanet and Softlayer both have rapid deployment options. I am not sure of the time on ServePath or ServerBeach deployments. DedicatedNow can also get a system setup pretty quickly. - bedigital, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree- No way Hostway -I have no Affinity for Valueweb or Hostway.
I feel bad for those working there and happy for those that will leave- I planned for the worst and hoped for the best- as it stands the worst has played out- On Friday July 13th I placed a dedicated server order with rackspace and migrated about 20 hosted accounts with email.
Only one customer, which I've known for over 15 years complained about 3 email account that were flaky for 5-6 hours, they are looking to drop me. Everyone else- I'm pleased to provide service in a PRO-Active manner.
I believe a class action law suit and or refund for the monthly disruption is fair. - skinfitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have been affected by this - I believe (with my subnet at least) they have problems with network switches because:
The servers go unavailable, then come back up again
While they are down, large parts of the rest of the subnet (24 bit mask) still ping (so it's not a routing problem)
When they come back up, the uptime is unaffected (so it's not a server power problem)
This happens to a number of servers at once (so it's not an individual server hardware issue)
Presently my box is up, so we will see how it goes.- esnetdotcom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0E Solutions Corp. http://www.esnet.com has fantastic data center operations and facilities. - mdmbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Valueweb or Hostway is deleting comments regarding swiching from their BB so I'll ask the question here: I was using cPanel X pro on VW on Linux and with ServerBeach, I have cPanel X with WHM. I was trying to do a full restore on a website, but it came back with an error saying that cPanel files were missing. If so, this could be a big problem in transferring the sites to the new server. Does anyone know how to get around this or is this compatibility problem between the versions of cPanel. I'm sure I won't be the only one to encounter this.
Also, screw VW and Hostway for deleting the postings from the BB when they should be fixing the problems and communicating to their customers. - mdmbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I've sent an email to the Senior Editor of eWeek about this debacle. If anyone would like to send one to see if they would be interested in more stories, here is the URL: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1642193,00.asp

- rsodhi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I just talked to our team at ServerBeach.com and they are extending 10% OFF ANY SERVER and NO SETUP FEE to anyone who has been affected by this outage. Feel free to let them know you heard it from me. Hopefully we can help in some way.
- albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+096 hrs of downtime and counting...
- vitalidea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Let's take an extremely conservative average of $100 per month per dedicated server. That's $1200 per year per dedicated server. 4000 servers at risk due to transition of assets. That's $4,800,000 of revenue per year AT RISK.
Why would you even consider risking $4.8 Million in Annual Revenue??!
That's just ludacris. Other companies buy out companies to get their customer base, like the purchase of Hotmail. NOT to lose the customer base.
If anyone on the board of directors of Hostway is reading this, I'd suggest you consider this to be a poor aquisition. It may have been better to buy out ValueWeb and have their management run the whole show. They seemed to be doing a better job. - albertclee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Now approaching 5 days of downtime...

- rjmolesa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My server is still down.
- stratogod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1been down for almost 5 days... worst support I have ever had to deal with. I'm losing customers, fans, and clients. I don't have the up-to-date backup material I need, otherwise I would move. I firmly believe they only have a few people working on these issues... my issue requires only a HARD REBOOT. It would take approximately 1 minute! instead i have to wait for servers with 'hardware issues' to be repaired first. Don't you think there is a better process???

- mrf18d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0As one of stratogod's clients, I am vicariously pissed!! I know it's not his fault, and after reading all of these digg comments, seriously, what the hell is wrong with WV? Though none of my sites are mission-critical or for-profit (thank God), I know people who were affected by this and are losing tons of money. Hope VW has something up their sleeve if they want any clients at all after this.
- bflor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Cari.net has an offer too (dual-xeon for 140), and is advertising the outage on their homepage. Nothing like kicking a company while they're down, but then again, 5 days of downtime without an act of God causing it is unforgivable.
