Even though Rose and Adelson created digg, they are somewhat responsible for getting a profitable return to the venture capitalists who finance the site. If they do sell out though, it'd be important for Rose to make sure to protect digg's autonomy as much as he can in the deal.

    I could see Fark wanting to buy digg because they'd finally fill that position they've had open forever for someone with design talent, or maybe 4chan just to formalise their ownership of the site, but I really can't see Google buying digg and especially not to fix Google News. That just doesn't make sense. If Google wanted to try their hand at social news they'd probably start by adding vote, bury and submit links rather than buying a fickle community that prefers to get their news from the blog equivelent of tabloids.

          On the other hand, Digg users pretty much all have ad-block so you can't advertise to them. On the off-chance you manage to slip an ad for a new season of Heroes through, they'll probably pirate the commercial-less episodes instead of watching the show. Hell, even advertising a presidential candidate is useless because Digg always has someone already picked, and diggers change their mind as often as Dick Cheney gives money to charity. I should know; I'm currently using Firefox with adblock while pirating Windows XP and I'm sitting next to my envelop of the Obama DVD I got for donating to his campaign.

          Basically, Digg isn't worth much unless you like hearing 'OM NOM NOM' or '***** THE RIAA'.

        Google News is an unbiased aggregate of what's happening in the world right now. Digg is about funny links, blogs spoon feeding popular opinion back into the crowd it came from, and sometimes some news. You might as well argue that Google was going to aquire digg as a replacement for Google Maps for all they have in common.

Google's got a lot of experience combating people spamming and gaming just about everything they own, which could only help Digg. But they also have a low tolerance for offensive speech and aren't afraid to delete inappropriate content, which could also only help Digg but in doing so would piss off a lot of the most active/vocal users.

    But make sure you include a ride on the private 767 as part of the deal. What's the point of selling out to Google if you can't score a ride on the really big tricked out airliner? And make them fly you somewhere totally cool to celebrate the deal, like Sydney. Because from there you could do a fly over tour of Antarctica. If the Google guys whine about the gas there's a 747 that flies Antarctic tours out of Sydney. It's around $5K, but what do you care? You'll be rich. Take the tour. Go dive the reef, go to the Sydney Opera House, have a ball. You guys earned it. Digg is a great site and you've managed it really well. Sell out, get rich, have fun.

    Look at flickr. How long does it take you to realize it is owned by yahoo? If it is not obvious at first it is very obvious the moment you sign up.
    Now lets look at youtube. How obvious is it that it is owned by google? There is ONLY ONE sentence on their company history page about it. That is just unheard of for a company. Normal companies are very big on branding and want to get their name out there.

You had a few people freaking out because a bunch of full copyrighted videos got taken down and their response time is faster flagging copyrighted *****, but outside of that, no real difference. Google Maps, Google Docs, Google Earth, Google Spreadsheets, Google Sites, Google Groups, Google Analytics, Google Page Creator, Google Desktop and Google Reader (some of it, anyway) were all other services that Google bought and completely changed.

      Outside of Google Search and Gmail, most of what you think of as "Google services" are actually aqusitions that were re-branded under the Google name.

Community-powered anything is only good while the community's good, and this community is self destructing. It's like a really nice car with a *****-drunk driver. For now at least it's still tolerable and options are limited anyway.

          My comment was mostly because I was surprised. With the constant flow of lame crap, spam, political bashing and republished pics/vids I can't imagine why news from a respectable source would get buried.

I find myself looking more at upcoming news stories on Digg than just the front page news since a lot of time the front page stories are just completely uninteresting. Just like you said, the community is the lifeline of Digg.

      There are plenty of morons right here on Digg. Fortunately, they're easily managed away, and it only takes four or five people to see an idiotic comment before it's nicley below viewing threshold.

      I've said it twice so far, but Google and Digg's best bets would be to buy Digg's codebase and modify it to suit their own needs, or to hire out Digg's coding team to advise and help build out Google News.

      Mind you, given the example of YouTube, Google buying Digg probably wouldn't change much, aside from being able to more tightly integrate google accounts into Digg - and perhaps migration of the Digg API into the Google API family.

      I think Google's best purchase to date was of Writely. Google Docs is seriously the better for it.

Microsoft spent 4 months trying to buy Yahoo! out - or did you forget already? Google didn't prevent anything - Microsoft just failed to negotiate well, and didn't close the deal.

      Google and others have had their chance to buy Digg. I'm willing to bet that Google won't buy Digg - first of all, if anyone starts filtering stuff on here, I just know a lot of people will leave. Second of all, Google wants to keep a professional appearance, which Digg won't help - lolcats and Bill O'Reilly attacks don't impress investors. Third of all, Google already has Google News for news - which does a good job of bringing together a lot of quality news sources, and has actual news rather than reposts and complaints about users who repost from Reddit.

          There's a lot of crap, but there's some good stuff too - and there's plenty of people/companies trying to "go viral" on there. Plus, there's a ton of sites that would rather just embed YouTube video than host it themselves - that can take a ton of bandwidth.
