James Stolpa had to hike through 60 miles of snow where he was eventually found and was able to tell rescuers where the mom and baby were. They all survived.

"There was a couple lost in the Santa Cruz mountains just this week also... they were found. So in the US it happens a lot."
I saw that on the local news - it was in Castle Rock state park. I mountain bike around that area sometimes. Those people were lost out there for 5 days. The whole time that news story was running, I just kept thinking - wtf, how in the heck did they get lost out there for 5 days? On the map, Castle Rock state park is only about 2 miles long by 3 miles wide. I could hike around the perimeter of the whole park in less than 1 day. From ANY point in the park if you walk in ANY direction just 5 miles, you will run into either a well-marked trail or a road. Now, during the week those trails and roads might not be well-traveled (depending on which direction you walked). BUT, if you walk in ANY direction just 10 miles, you will run into a well-traveled road that probably sees a car at least every 10 minutes. There is no reason that you should ever get lost in Castle Rock state park and have to spend more than 1 night there (unless you are injured and can't move). My conclusion? Those people were a few cards short of a full deck. - hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@ bigtrouble77

Everyone doesn't live in the end on "I Shouldn't Be Alive". Two episodes come to mind:
1) The people that got caught in a storm on their sailboat. I think there were 5 people total. I think 2 were eaten by sharks (after they went crazy from dehydration and jumped in the water). Another 1 died of wound infections. Only 2 survived.
2) The group of 4 guys that went trekking through the Amazon. Only 2 got out alive. They never found the bodies of the other 2. - jubbjubb, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Not completely real. James is still lost yet the title says he's not . Just trying to get promoted i suppose...

EVERY SINGLE 'what to do if you get lost' thingy clearly states 'Stay with the car', every crappy TV show about the outdoors covering what to do if you get lost, says exactly the same.
I'm not saying that I hope James dies or anything, just that hes a stupid fool for leaving the car, and his wife and kids when the chances of being found in the car are much higher than stumbling about blindly in unfamiliar surrounds..
In Australia a few years back, there were 2 German tourists who got stranded when their 4-wheel drive got stranded in sand in the middle of the Oz desert. One of them left the car to look for help and was dead in under 2 days, the other stayed with the car and was found pretty quickly by a passing car.
Having said that, there was another couple a few years back who found themselves in the same situation when they left the market road and got stuck in sand. They DID stay with their car, and died pretty quickly in the Oz heat. When rescuers found them, all they had to do was to let some of the air out of the tires and drive the car back to the main road. - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Every piece of logic tells you to stay in the car, but after a while you wonder......
That is what men do. They take risks. The risk of dying in the car was very likely. After a week, everyone could easily be near severe dehydration. If, you did not take the chance you may be too weak later to even try. I have two daughters and I would have eventually left in search for help, too. I hope he is found soon.
Makes you wonder, what you should take along on a trip to call for help. Flares? CBs? Damn, that would be a hard situation. I would assume he would have climbed up to the road first. I hope he did not fall. The made for TV ending would be nice right now. - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31"I'm not saying that I hope James dies or anything, just that hes a stupid fool for leaving the car, and his wife and kids when the chances of being found in the car are much higher than stumbling about blindly in unfamiliar surrounds.."
And you're a stupid fool for calling this guy names you insensitive prick. Whether it was the right thing to do or not, the guy is not stupid by any means. Sitting in a car for days and days, most of us probably would have done the same thing. I'm sure he knew the risks when he left on his own, but he probably felt that he had to do something. Why don't you grow up and at least offer the guy a prayer instead of calling him names. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12And if you followed what happened in the Stolpa case, going out to seek help saved their lives. It's a tough call to say whether you should stay with the car or leave, but after a few days hiking out isn't at all an unreasonable thing to do.
- Prometheus, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Not to be a downer or anything, but schmerge you aren't by chance talking about Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, are you? Starved, the survivors ended up having to eat some of their mates who had died.
- bradkovach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13James was probably thinking of his children when he left the car. It was probably pretty bleak for a while and James was being the man (provider, protector, etc) of the family. I respect him for leaving the car.
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@zybch
I imagine none of us ever have (and hopefully never will) experienced the desperation and anguish that they were suffering. What you should do and what you would actually do in that situation are totally different. You are merely publicising your ignorance.
In any case, if James was alone he probably would have stayed with the car but what you seem to forget is that he was with the three people he loves most seeing them in torment. Thinking logically, if you all stay in the car you have just one chance of survival - that you are found. If he goes to look for help, he effectively doubles his family's chance of survival even though he may sacrifice himself. To knowingly take that risk is admirable, not stupid, and I hope I would have the courage to do the same for my family. - hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Guys, the answer is always fire.
With fire you can 1) melt snow to drink (if there is no snow, then you can walk to a stream to get water) and 2) signal search teams to your location and 3) stay warm.
Unless you get lost in the middle of the Sahara or the Amazon, or elsewhere that has no water or civilization is 100s of miles away ... you always need to build a fire. With fire and water you can easily survive a couple weeks.
And any slightly technically inclined should be able to use the parts in a car to make a fire. - flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I'm not saying that I hope James dies or anything, just that hes a stupid fool for leaving the car, and his wife and kids when the chances of being found in the car are much higher than stumbling about blindly in unfamiliar surrounds.."
I am sure it was heartwrenching to leave his kids and wife alone to look for help, but imagine how hard that must have been, to watch them in the car, in the cold. As a father you have to do something.
I understand the viewpoint, "why did he leave?" but I am not going to judge any fathers decision to help his family. good luck james. - fmaxwell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3zybch wrote:

He was trying to save his family, not himself -- not a concept that a cowardly moron like you would grasp. Even if the odds were against him surviving and finding help, by taking that risk he increased the chances that his wife and children would be rescued. Were the searchers not successful in finding the car, he might have survived and been able to lead rescuers back to his wife and child.
You seem more like the kind of person who would kill your wife and children on the first day in order to conserve limited food and water for yourself. - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dumbass, they're in the car, and have the higher chance of surviving from that. He goes to find help, decreasing his chance of getting saved, but INCREASING THEIRS.
Even if it does lower his chances, it's raising theirs since now the family can be rescued from the car, or by james being rescued and telling rescuers where the family is.
He was looking out for his family's interests.

- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66i'm usually not the most optimistic person ever. realistically, how often would a family missing for almost a week in the cold (its been cold here, i live near by) survive, especially with a 7 month y/o baby, but i'm very happy to see this, as my doubts started to set in after them disappearing with no trace with the cold weather and a week going by.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27The only survival show I've seen concerning babies said that they were excellent survivors so long as they didn't have a pre-existing illness. The surviving-in-cold-with-a-baby has been done before, even without a car or other man-made structure to keep warm in, although 7 days is a practical limit since you're starving by that point.

You can't just eat the snow. That'll just bring on hypothermia faster. Which means you have to find some way to melt it, which, depending on conditions and available equipment, could be hard.
"Yeah, i wonder how they kept themselves warm, the car battery should've ran out after a day.."
If they were lucky, the car was still in running condition, in which case they could use it both for heat and electricity. (In which case melting snow would be easy)
If you're in the middle of the arctic with nothing but a parka, on the other hand, you're *****. And it's not gonna be starvation that kills you. - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11remember Sacajawea (the chick on the dollar coin/butter box)

Leaving the car running to keep warm sounds like a good idea, but you have to keep snow well clear of the exhaust pipe. More than one person has ended up dead in a snowbank not from freezing but from carbon monoxide poisoning. - bradkovach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There are people that do fasts for 40 days (like Jesus in the desert) and the body quits signaling hunger after about 3 days. However, without water, the outlook is bleak. I pray for Jame's safety. I don't want his kids to grow up without a father.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Car batteries alone won't keep you warm. You have to have the car running (the engine produces the heat that is used to heat the car).

"Car batteries alone won't keep you warm. You have to have the car running (the engine produces the heat that is used to heat the car)."
car battery+jumper cables+tires and wood=easy fire
from that you can keep heat during the night, search for wood during the day/try and get spotted, and melt snow in a suitcase/tarp/anything else melt resistant. in a modern car almost everything besides the engine block will burn (however toxic it may be) providing heat and fire enough to dry wood, melt ice, and be warm. if he can stay relatively calm and keep his head on his shoulders, hopefully he will be alright. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Damn. If only there were some water underneath all that snow I'd be saved!"
When you have the means to melt it, snow is a good source of water. Eating snow is a good way to get hypothermia and die, though. I remember a particularly horrifying documentary about the survival of a man and his baby daughter: they were stranded in the snow without a way to make a fire, in freezing temperatures. His wife ate snow in order to remain hydrated enough to nurse the infant. In the end, she was the only one to die of hypothermia as a result of consuming so much snow and lowering her body temperature/expending too much energy to turn that snow into water.
This is one of the first things you learn in winter survival training. - hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@ saska
"This is one of the first things you learn in winter survival training."
Then I'm sure they also taught you that eating snow under certain circumstances is beneficial. Like if you have a source of heat or have a good shelter to stay in (i.e. a car).
The whole "don't eat snow" thing is one of the biggest misconceptions people pass around from supposed "winter survival training". Yes, if you're out skiing, get lost off the trail, and have to sit in the snow while surviving, then you probably don't want to eat much snow. But there are many situations in which eating snow would be fine. Your body is constantly producing heat, you just need to make sure that the net heat flow isn't such that you cool yourself off too much. But any excess heat produced by your body can be used to melt and consume snow.
Having said that, you don't want to eat snow to quench your thirst. This is probably where most people go wrong. They gorge themselves because they're thirsty, and the heat impact is too much . You just want to eat enough to stave off dehydration, and that is all.

"At approximately 1:45 p.m. PST, search-and-rescue officials were notified that a vehicle and a female waving an umbrella were spotted by a helicopter search crew near the Rogue River in the area of Bear Camp Viewpoint off Bear Camp Road, according to a statement from Oregon State Police. This location is near the Curry/Josephine County line in Josephine County."
It also mentioned it was a private helicopter hired by the family, not one of the police helicopters (meaning less or no access to cell data).
I hope one (or more) of the helicopters has infrared, should make finding James easier.

Dude,
Don't ever get pissed off about the Digg rating of a comment. On the giant list of things in life that are in no way whatsoever important, Digg comment rating should be damn close to the top. - fershizzle, on 10/12/2007, -16/+7i agree, and im not mad at the rating, it just makes me mad how people dont read things before they comment/ post. i am not mad at all now, just having a bad day
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11If you accidentally dugg someone down, no one would ever know or care unless you made a big deal out of it. Which you did.

about half an hour to get on the front page.
great news that they have been found.- arktos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29no it took like 3 minutes for that story about Rumsfeld resigning to hit front page*.

- theendlessnow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47It would have made it to the front page faster if the headline read:

Jim left the car 2 days ago. Its cold, but not so cold that he would automatically be dead after 2 days. Plus, he had snow shoes...has it snowed in the past two days? If not, they should be able to track him.- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not to be a downer or anything, but it's entirely possible to die of exposure in temperatures up to around 50F. It's been in the mid thirties at night in that area during the past week.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If he had snowshoes, then one would think he would have some decent cold weather gear as well. If so, his survivability potential should be decent depending on how much food they had in the car.

- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bits&bytes,
You don't get it though. It doesn't matter that it's not freezing. He's not going outside for ten minutes, he's been in it for DAYS with little to no source of heat. Your body sucks at dealing with that, even in "above freezing" temperatures. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have personally had hypothermia in ~45F conditions. Its called having human decency when one genuinely cares about others. Now I don't know this person or his family, I didn't feel right replying to any of the other threads about him I simply Dugg them up. I do however need to be the fourth person to go ***** YOU on this thread!
Digg needs an age filter.. and man I feel old just saying that but when some "kids" can't even respect life in any form I am no longer able to identify myself as a kid. - cbrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, Digg doesn't need an age filter. I'm 14 and I, unlike Surreptitious, can make an intelligent comment without someone holding my hand and helping me along.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@cbrian
You know you are 100% right, I was just so angry at his mindset that I didn't even research who he was. His profile is ranked at 900 on the site yet his number one article is on Hitler. Age has very little to do with ones core values, I change my position from an age filter to a feature that lets you lower a users rank based on the ammount of negative diggs they receive. If this was in place he wouldn't be ranked in the 900's on here and his position on most things could be ignored instead of discussed.
Sorry again for my shortsighted rant about age restrictions above, I think most age restrictions are pointless regardless of what they are intended to restrict. (most but not all - lets leave driving to 16 and older okay) - Trogdor420, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not only is his #1 article about Hitler, he submitted an article about the swastika!!
- charmaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any word on their condition?
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no but Kati flagged the helicopter down, so it seems she is ok. The children are alive, no word on injuries yet.
- holzp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75Wherever James Kim is now, this is the outcome he wanted. It will be the first thing he asks when he is found.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67100% true. The kids are saved. His wife is saved. Any man knows that is #1. I hope James is now found.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yup - if you think about it, thats the entire reason he left the car in the first place: to find help for his wife and kids. I highly doubt anyone could sit in a car for a better piece of a week and watch their wife and two little kids suffer. Sure, the "best" thing to do was to stay in the car - which he did; however, he probably surmised his odds and decided his life's was worth risking for his family.
And, arguably, at the end of the day - who wouldn't give their own lives for their family? Now that the search force has a much more focused area to look in, hopefully we'll see him soon :)
- NoLeftTurn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Awesome. I don't think I've prayed for anything in years, but dammit I pray they find him... The way the community rallied around him speaks volumes for how much people loved this guy.
- necromancerr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It is true, just read it on news.com. CNET will stream a press conference at 5 PM, P.S.T.
- DaveTehWave, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Thank the Gods!
- doomgoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3but what happened?
- Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I hate to be the one to sound a note of caution, but don't think there's much cause for celebration until James is found. I'm sure his wife and kids won't be cracking open any champagne knowing he's still out there somewhere in the freezing cold (without the protection of the car which probably helped to keep them alive).
- Ace02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Can we fix the title of the story? James is still missing.
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -123/+6Dumb-ass city folks going where they shouldn't. The guy did everything wrong. No survival skills, leaves the scene, moron.
- thegreyfox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43Remind me to punch you the next time you are lost in NYC.
- Jasruler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Its not their fault you can't afford to live in the city. Don't take it out on them.
- TSSaloic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Thats mean, he was looking for help. He has a family and he was looking out for them too.
James please be found alive. - Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11He didn't leave the scene for a week. After sitting around the crash site for a week, wouldn't you think it would be a good idea to try to get help rather than wait around for your baby daughter to starve or freeze to death?
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I doubt he's a moron, but I also don't understand why he left on snowshoes. If you don't know what you're doing, why not just stick to the road? We have to assume that the car is broken down. It makes more sense to start walking on the road, not through the wilderness on snowshoes!
It will be interesting to find out where the car is, as well. The road they ended up on must have very little traffic. It makes me wonder why they were on that road to begin with. It's always possible that they were just sight-seeing and had an accident. - canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Maybe because after 7 days, you and your wife and baby girls are starving, the rescue you thought would come quickly never showed and you are desperate to try to do something to save your family. Maybe that's just me.
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -51/+6Someone who REALLY cared about his family would have..
1. Not put them in danger by driving in conditions he/she was unable to cope with.
2. Planned accordingly for emergencies. Food, shelter, fire starter, water procurement or water in the car during all times, enough to keep you alive a week.
3. Some form of communication or signalling device. INMARSAT/Iridium/Globalstar comm device or cell phone, flares, millimeterwave signaling device, airhorn.
4. Training for survival in the back-country.
Bottom line in the lower-48, DON"T LEAVE THE SCENE!!!! (unless you're a Kennedy).
This dimwit is your typical SF urbanite. He thinks mother nature is something you can beat, something that will "cut you some slack" if times get tough.
This guy is why SAR people hate city folk. Saving a 5 year old who wanders away from camp is one thing. Saving TWO adults for putting at risk the lives of young children is simply disturbing. When will people learn? - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Maybe because after 7 days, you and your wife and baby girls are starving, the rescue you thought would come quickly never showed and you are desperate to try to do something to save your family. Maybe that's just me."
My point is that following the road would be safer and would have a higher likelihood of success. He shouldn't even have left the scene, but if he had stuck to the road, they wouldn't be out looking for him right now. - Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Neiby,
I grew up not too far from this area and, though I don't know exactly which road this was, I can guess that it is one that isn't usually maintained during the winter. When the snows start falling, the road department, I'm guessing county here, will just close the gate and that's it until spring. If you get on the road before it's closed, your out of luck. For someone not familiar with the roads in these mountainous, very rural areas, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a maintained and a non maintained road. They will both look the same in a storm. The difference usually has to do with how many people live on the road and have no other alternative to get out, not by how well the road looks when you turn on to it.
So I can easily see how someone not knowing could get themselves out in an area that wouldn't see another vehicle (except perhaps a 4x4 out joyriding) for months, let alone a week, and this on well traveled roads during better weather. - begbegbegbegbeg, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13Deuterium is on the money. I'm a trained SAR responder, and I deal with this all the time. It's usually city folk who come out to the wilderness, assuming that it's just like that time they drove around Yellowstone. They get out on one of the Forest Service roads where they shouldn't be, in conditions that they they're not prepared for, and the next thing you know their families are on television crying that "officials aren't doing enough" to find their loved ones.
Of course, that won't make any difference to the flatlanders who populate Digg. They want what they want, and there shouldn't be any such thing as personal responsibility. Go ahead - digg me down and prove me right! - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"So I can easily see how someone not knowing could get themselves out in an area that wouldn't see another vehicle (except perhaps a 4x4 out joyriding) for months, let alone a week, and this on well traveled roads during better weather."
We have a few of those where I live (Colorado). I do feel very sorry for them if they got stuck somewhere like that. It may also explain why he decided to snowshoe instead of follow the road. It could be that he had figured out that it was likely that no one would be coming up the road, so he decided to take the straightest line to help. I do really hope they find him, but I don't think the chances are good if he's been in the cold for this long by himself. That depends on his level of survival skills. If he knows how to build some shelter and start a fire then he might be okay. - Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tried to add this before the edit ran out:
As for staying on the road, he might have. The road most likely has just as much snow as the surrounding areas, so having the snowshoes doesn't mean he went cross country. Also, quite a few of these mountain roads can go for 10s of miles and then just end, never coming to anything/anyone that could help you. If he decided to continue forward with the direction he had already been going (possibly because he knew there wasn't any place for help close by that he'd already passed) he could end up even further away from any potential source of help. Also, there are a lot of forest service roads in this area and if he started getting out on those, he could circle around for months and never find his way out. The best course it to try to follow waterways down, as they almost always lead to rivers, and people living near the rivers. Still though, without training I'd be awfully scared to leave the road, it would be a hard decision. - spam4jan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ Deuterium, your second comment.
Yes, your list is a good thing to keep in mind, how you decided to share that with everyone is why everyone who read it considers you an ass. These guys weren't doing some back-country camping trip, they were (I am guessing here) driving down a regular road or more likely a highway.
1) Fair enough, but you should know full well how quickly snow storms can develop and sneak up on even careful informed drivers.
2) From early accounts they were stuck wherever they were for a week. They seemed to survive ok for that long, so supplies to last a week is a check.
3) They had their cell phone. Tracking their last position helped narrow down the area.
4) Sure it'd be great, but these guys weren't climbing Mount Everest, they were (I am guessing here) driving down a highway or a road. Did you take pilot training before your last flight?, did you take programming courses so you could surf the web and check your email?
Staying with the car is a great idea, but after five or so days with no help in sight and seeing your wife and child slowly dying I think I can safely speak for most people here when I say that I would try to go get help too, fully knowing how suicidal that decision is.
Yes Search and Rescue has to deal with some stupid people doing stupid things, I don't think these guys are one of them, they didn't sky out-of-bounds, nor decided to go for a day hike with only a water bottle and nothing else, none of that obvious stupid stuff, though what actually happened remains to be seen. - 8bit_Hero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@ begbegbegbegbeg
hey *****, considering he's still missing, now is not the time to be judgemental. show a little compassion. - daggett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You and the other ***** trolls posting here are truly pathetic.
Are your lives so miserable that you feel the need to make others feel bad?
I rarely respond to trolls, but you folks are about as low as you can go.
Injecting your venom into this story of life and death is despicable.
Unfortunately you folks are that (fortunately low) percentage of the public that projects your personal misery in the form of disgusting comments.
People who feel good about themselves don't act like this.
This can be a troubling time of the year for many, but don't let your personal troubles make you a mean person.
Put yourself in others shoes, and don't make the mistake of thinking that they [think] just like you.
We're all riding this merry-go-round called earth together.
James and his family are good people, and deep-down I hope you are too.
Note to other would-be trolls, if you have something mean or negative to say, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!

- feelinduggdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11This is great news to hear. I hope they find James as well. This story was global if you didn't already know. I live in Australia and it made the papers and some news shows as well. Pretty damn good imho. I wonder how much the internet played in it all considering the amount of attention it recieved all over the world.
They'll find James he'll be all right...He's a smart guy. - digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4What happened ?? i knew they were missed but why were they there? car accident? what happened?
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Confirmed to be an accident by the police.
- kevinarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I heard the press conference. The guy said 'crash site,' but then he back pedaled and said they don't know what happened yet. They don't know yet if it's a crash, unless something developed recently.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If they can find the mother and daughters this long after losing contact, the chance of finding James Kim is that much better. I am very surprised and relieved to hear that the mom and kids are OK.
- jgreene777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it certainly narrows the search area.
- Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am really happy
- xyphoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's not often these stories end with good news, so it's awesome to hear this.
I understand its not completely over, but so far the news is good. I just hope James is found soon. - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is just wonderful news! More than likely Kati would know the general direction where James was headed which would make it easier to find him. All we need now is few bloodhounds to track down James. Hopefully more good news in few hours.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hopefully he stayed on (or near) the road and didn't try to go trekking through the forest.
- aardfox, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2My name is Grant, they are being helped at the hospital in my pass!
