Jimmy Wales Reboots His 'Google-Killer'
forbes.com — The Wikipedia founder launches his community-powered search engine--again.

- digg it
- bstory, on 06/03/2008, -15/+10Dugg in hopes it is true
- ElbertF, on 06/04/2008, -4/+1This is the first effort that actually has the potential to make me switch, I'm really hoping this catches on.
- unreg, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3I'm confused. Just exactly why do I need the ability to Wiki my search results. If I'm searching "porn", then that's what I get. If I want to control the type of porn, then I'll do an advanced search, perhaps with the modification (-sweaty, smelly Jimmy Wales ex-girlfriend)
Seems to me Jimmy is struggling to remain in the limelight now that he's fallen from the mantle head at Wikipedia.
- patburke1980, on 06/03/2008, -11/+6could be great. i hope it catches on so we can find out how well the open-source model works for internet search.
count me in. - atdigg, on 06/04/2008, -5/+1It could turn to be really good in some domains, combined with Google responses where there are not many manual entries it could be unbeatable.
- nailPuppy, on 06/04/2008, -2/+52How can he come out with a search engine when they can't even manage to have decent search results on wikipedia?
- djcreamy, on 06/04/2008, -9/+22***** THING SUCKS!
- Puffles, on 06/04/2008, -4/+5Actually, this thing doesn't ***** suck.
- elparkino, on 06/04/2008, -3/+4...I cant read that. We'll just do it live then!
- BlackOp, on 06/04/2008, -4/+2Stop polluting digg you annoying *****.
- GhostFreeman, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2There's no words in it!
- bluemist, on 06/04/2008, -5/+2In today's internet where searching for something can be a chore, this would be nice. It is user-filtered search results which means I'm more sure to hit the info I want in fewer time and clicks than I would through "all internets listed" search engines like Google.
- dstz, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2"like Google" is a little delusional
- drgmdp, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1it has been widely demonstrated that humans are not able to bend over and do anything (like could be.. alter search results) for money
- SaladCactusKing, on 06/04/2008, -1/+12Search for "Rachel Marsden" comes out blank.. hrrmmm Jimmy
- GoGoPoCoSo, on 06/04/2008, -4/+4Before anyone criticizes the search engine as it is now, realize it's not even in beta, but early alpha.
'Search Wikia is still very much under development, and we are aware that the quality of the search results is low. What you see here is our first alpha release.'
I think it has some great potential after tinkering around with it a bit and especially like how you can edit articles in real-time, but I don't expect to this to "kill" Google any time soon. - ThirdPrize, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4Tried a search for the popular singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel and the results were a joke. I guess this is some responce to Google doing their own encyclopedia thing.
- jeremie, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Strange, worked great for me:
http://re.search.wikia.com/search.html#Mark%20Eitz ...- ThirdPrize, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1How many of them were actually relevant, and by that I mean relating to Mr Eitzel rather than just having his name in there somewhere? Maybe less than half. That is not much good for a search engine.
- jeremie, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Strange, worked great for me:
- thedrizzle21, on 06/04/2008, -1/+17dugg, but calling it a google-killer is ridiculous at this point. still a cool concept.
- dstz, on 06/04/2008, -2/+2A community powered search engine, isn't it called delicious, or stumbleupon? beating them may be a pertinent objective. It seems to me that Google is another ballpark already, the one to beat them will probably not do it by chance, like in any industrial situation.
- CameronConnor, on 06/04/2008, -2/+3But people are going to use Google to help search for stories to edit in Wikia.
- frozen1, on 06/04/2008, -1/+5The problem with user generated search is spam, I wonder how they are going to keep the spammers and bots out.
- maninalift, on 06/04/2008, -1/+6Well designed
http://re.search.wikia.com/
No predictions on it's success here- drgmdp, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3it's a very lame thing that it doesn't display the results on different pages, but all in a huge page that adds content as you scroll down
- Flashman, on 06/04/2008, -0/+5Wikipedia got as big as it did because it was useful and nobody expected too much from it. Wikia Search, on the other hand, is burdened by uselessness and hype.
- unreg, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1That the nature of the industry. With all great things there is the occasional clinker.
- maninalift, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1I like the background pictures that appear in the banner.
- omenmedia, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3The fly-out ads on that Forbes page make me want to stab their developers in the face.
- PhishTahko, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1If this is anywhere near the degree of uselessness in wikipedia search it's going nowhere fast.
- superjamie, on 06/04/2008, -7/+6Seriously, ***** JIMBO WALES!
I have never seen such a prejudiced, manipulative, power-abusing person in such a high-profile position garner such praise despite constant evidence of such morally bankrupt wrongdoing.
Think I'm wrong?

Guess I can wave my Wikipedia account goodbye after this.- smalleywall, on 06/04/2008, -2/+1...Seriously?
- Culyt, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3YAY! Neo-Nazi propaganda!
How dare they have articles about Jewish people in an encyclopaedia.
And strangely enough the 2nd article seems pro-jew. So is Wikipedia evil because it hates Jews or likes them?
☢
- peterredding, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3Buried for calling Wales the Wikipedia founder when he was in fact a co-founder.
- xrv1ck, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2google-killer...?
I don't get it. o____o You can't kill google!
This is madness!- unreg, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2So if Google can do no evil, what's Wikias creed?
- pprkut, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1madness?
THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!!!!
- macwac, on 06/04/2008, -2/+1I didn't get what i searched for, but it's in its infancy stage and so was google when i first started using it.. wikipedia to me has proven invaluable and hopefully wikia will be too. I can't say that I'm particularly happy with yahoo or google.. i still get lots of junk, if wikia can manage to give results without that junk, why not? instead of shooting em down, why not give some encouraging words and hope that it will get better?
- gkwillie, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I don't care how good your search engine is, Google does it superbly for 95+ of the people that use it on a regular basis. The fact is, only a small (relative to the whole internet) community of users would do any editing, Joe internet won't care enough to switch.
And calling anything a Google killer feels like calling any music hardware an iPod killer. It just ain't going to happen in the near future. - Woknblues, on 06/04/2008, -0/+5Is Google really "all about the search engine" anymore? I think this guy is trying to chase down a business model from 1996. He ought to consider developing more functionality in Wikipedia (a fine product IMO) rather than chasing down a 8,000,000 lb gorilla. Here is a newsflash, buddy: You ain't ever gonna catch Google at their game.
- Farmer77, on 06/04/2008, -1/+6A 100% community powered search engine will never work. People will always abuse it to the best of their ability. Reason why Google works is because they have a good algorithm that takes account of hundreds of factors and no one is sure what they all are, so people can't game the system.
- sg7791, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1Wikipedia isn't abused often. And Google is gamed relatively easy as we've seen.
- rblancarte, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Wales ex- would disagree with you. I agree Google can be gamed, but Wikipedia is abused very often. I don't see how a search engine would not fall victim to the same.
- sg7791, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1Wikipedia isn't abused often. And Google is gamed relatively easy as we've seen.
- amrhassan, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3it's fun, but it's too much of a hassle.. google bots are doing it all for us!
- HolyChimp, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1Seems like a great idea, but is there really any point in a search egine that doesn't know where anything is until you tell it?
If I knew where it was I wouldn't be using a search engine! For most searches at the moment you need to google it just to tell Wikia what to list.
That said, it's only in alpha at the moment, and it did seem to be fairly good as a research tool. Not so good at simply searching though. - sq2shooter, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I don't need a new search engine, the one I use works fine. Talk about filling a need that doesn't exist.
- bbabics, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1If something is going to "kill" google, it needs to be accessible to everyone in any situation. That being said, if you have JavaScript disabled, the page won't even display the search field. Talk about an inaccessibility. As you may have guessed, Google will not only display the it's search field but will remain fully functional.
Please don't get me wrong. This search takes advantage of some nice functionality and aesthetics, however, it should degrade gracefully; or at-least display a "Must have JavaScript enabled to view this page" message in noscript tags.- sg7791, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Surely you don't have Javascript disabled. That would make digg near impossible.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3The irony is that I use google to find the wikipedia pages I'm looking for.
- unreg, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I had to use Google to find the Search Wikia homepage.
- christophebrock, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I don't believe in this. Letting the users control the results of a searchengine is something that will never work. To get the most honest results out of a searchengine, you need a system that uses parameters which aren't easy to control but do give indications of success. Like Google does at this moment...
- TechMike, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1It's a search of Wikipedia. I needed a government document that Wikia hadn't loaded and it didn't know where to go find it. Google put it #3, behind some other government references to the document.
- supermanred, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Why do people insist on making the Google Killer and not "This is different from Google"....its always the Google killer or the iPod killer..and usually they end up with a Zune.
- supermanred, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1So If I am part of this engine can I spend all my time redirecting fellow searchers to goatse and rickrolls?
- thefinger, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Right! Announce a "google killer". And when it happens to suck in some way, cop out and say it's still in beta. That's crap.
Work on the damn thing first, then announce it. Meantime I'll do what I always do, use Google to turn up Wiki results. - walshga, on 06/04/2008, -1/+0Ya gotta love market forces!
- eeron, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1I love the idea, but I have my reservations. As an avid wiki user, I can see the potential, but Wikipedia seems to be getting bigger but not necessarily better. I'm just wondering if Wikia search can live up to its promise and its not a waste in energy
- YodaJones, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2Jimmy is more fun when he is having out in public with a girlfriend who sells his ***** on eBay.
- KireGoTI, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2Search for Jimmy Wales, second result:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syphilis
Swear to God. - zedomax, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Here, I did my first edit on George Bush with M.F.:
http://re.search.wikia.com/search.html#george%20bu ... - idiotonuni, on 06/05/2008, -0/+0Sounds a lot like Mahalo.com. Jimmy Whales a thief?
