Kid Rock: Don’t Just Steal Music, Steal Everything
torrentfreak.com — With his tongue firmly in his cheek, Kid Rock has been commenting on file-sharing again but says he doesn ’t need to steal himself, because he’s rich - but not rich enough, as it turns out. Kid Rock announced that he’s boycotting iTunes because he says between Apple and the labels, they’re keeping all the money.

"With his tongue firmly in his cheek, Kid Rock also says he doesn’t agree with the one-sided argument against file-sharing: “I think we should level the playing field. I don’t mind people stealing my music, that’s fine. But I think they should steal everything. You know how much money the oil companies have? If you need some gas, just go fill your tank off and drive off, they’re not going to miss it.”"- shutaro, on 06/18/2008, -9/+7Kid Rock has always been a well-known communist.

- JigoroKano, on 06/18/2008, -1/+32You have no idea what communism is do you?
- Fordi, on 06/18/2008, -1/+8Sounds a lot more like he's an anarchist.
- VinceNoir, on 06/18/2008, -2/+10No you idiot. That doesn't sound like communism at all. You must have failed certain classes in school. What Kid Rock is suggesting there sounds like thievery which is completely unlike communism no matter what some conservative dilholes might think. The deal with communism is that stealing is STILL wrong. The idea is that no one own anything. It all belongs to everyone (since everyone is "equal") and is equally distributed according to fair measures like need or ability. The problem is that human beings are ***** selfish bastards and they are becoming more so every generation (hopefully something will happen to wipe out a large percentage of the selfish ones), so some pigs wind up being more equal than others.
In Soviet Russia, the government officials owned YOU! That wasn't how it was supposed to work, but the idiots couldn't follow their own plan properly. So you wound up with high level politicians who took advantage of the system for their own benefit and the rest of the communists citizens had to pay for it. Sound familiar? You're right. That's where we are in Amerika today. Only it's not the politicians who run the system, it's the businesses (I should say corrupt because business itself is NOT a bad thing, neither is capitalism as long as it's CONTROLLED for the benefit of society and not the ***** shareholders).
Today, America is polluted with corrupt businesses who do everything in their power to get as much money as possible from consumers under the guise of creating jobs, helping the economy, or just making valuable goods and services for the citizens of the this country. Of course that's not really what actually happens. Instead, these ***** try as much as possible to cut costs where quality is concerned, they also abuse their customers with poor service when there are problems. They make it so hard to be able to take care of a problem that many people will just give up and will have wound up losing money. The whole idea that capitalism would just work itself out if only there were no regulations is *****. Unregulated businesses will simply do everything they can to make more and more and more money ad nauseum. The stockholders drive the profit taking and as a result the needs of the customers take a back seat. It's ***** abuse. Don't tell me you haven't experienced it because WE ALL HAVE godammit!
So:
RUSSIA = Politicos ran the POLITICAL system (communism) and abused the citizens with it.
USA = Business runs the ECONOMIC system (capitalism) and abuses the citizens through the manipulation of the government.
In short, we're no different. I remember as a kid hearing stories about how the yearly minimal allotment of government provided blue jeans that Russians were allowed to get would barely last the year. In America, we're "free" to go buy jeans anywhere we want, but most people are buying from places like Walmart (which is the capitalist version of the government warehouses the USSR had) and so get the SAME quality that the Russians did. But by golly it's PATRIOTIC!!! ***** assholes.
So there you go, an admittedly poor overview of how communism differs from theft so that some readers here might actually pull their heads out of their assholes to figure out what REAL LIFE is like instead of listening to the opinions of worthless and nearly insane pseudo-conservative/capitalists. What we have here in America is the illusion of freedom. Just keep the peasants happy with the beads and trinkets and they won't rise up, but make sure the beads are made out of crap is possible.- Marshallo1, on 06/19/2008, -1/+0.

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty happy with this current distribution model. Smart people get their media for free, they know there's plenty of stupid people paying to keep those pockets lined. - FlyingSpaghetti, on 06/18/2008, -0/+37I once negotiated directly with an apple.
It was delicious.- shutaro, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2Ok... Now you've got me wondering as to the terms that were agreed upon in said direct negotiations.
- Klinky, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Sounds like it was pretty unfair to the apple...

The apple didn't read the fine print. - Atomic1fire, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Im guessing this was in the fine print
The creator of these terms reserves the right to eat you or sell you at market price
- sexybobo, on 06/18/2008, -5/+2apple take $0.40 a song. He needs to negotiate with the label for the other $0.60
- kelly, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I read that Apple takes .18 per song
- FlyingSpaghetti, on 06/18/2008, -0/+37I once negotiated directly with an apple.
- tacochampion, on 06/18/2008, -10/+7It doesn't matter, apple shouldn't be making a dime beyond a hosting charge. Let the RIAA run their own online distribution channel. Apple doesn't deserve what it gets for iTunes, the RIAA NEVER deserves what it gets (unless what it's getting is *****).
- treed, on 06/18/2008, -4/+9So, they should do all the development and advertising for free? A great deal of the reason for iTunes success is the simplicity of use. You're saying that they shouldn't get paid for that?
- tacochampion, on 06/18/2008, -9/+1Yes, that's right.
The ease of use is just a requirement of writing software.
The RIAA could sell this ***** directly, there's NO reason why apple needs to own and run the service other than to make the fat profits off other people's work. The RIAA could have paid apple for iTunes and run the service itself, charged the same for downloads, and MAYBE the artists could get paid. Instead, without the artists say, the RIAA made a deal with Apple so they split the money made off the artists and keep it. Apple is RAKING IT IN on iTunes, look it up. - Alex.w, on 06/18/2008, -8/+1Digg is so *****. Someone remarks that Apple should be financially rewarded for developing the most popular (and some would say the one that really took this mainstream) online/download music store, and they're dugg down. WTF.
I know Apples store was just to help sell iPods, that's where their real revenue is. Sill, the idea that a company shouldn't be allowed to set it's own pricing and try to make reveune for it's shareholders.. well that sounds like communism.
And the guy saying "apple shouldn't be making a dime beyond a hosting charge" gets dugg up. That's just insane. - MacParrot, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1So let me see if I have this straight.
The ease of use is a requirement of writing software?
What does that even mean? If it was THAT simple, then all those other music stores should have been at least successful as Apple's iTunes.
I'm not trying to give Apple the golden cookie award, but while most of the other stores were trying to set up renting music through subscription services, Apple made the prices (initially anyway) all the same so you always knew what you were going to spend.
You're going to trust the RIAA to do the right thing toward the artists? Really? The RIAA made no deal with Apple. The individual studios did. The artists made their own deals with the studios. Some get screwed by the very contracts THEY signed. Apple had nothing to do with it. - Atomic1fire, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1it should be as close to a third as possible
artist gets a third (they are the face behind the music)
Apple gets a third (they sell it)
label gets a third (they advertise and distribute)
- tacochampion, on 06/18/2008, -9/+1Yes, that's right.
- trispear, on 06/18/2008, -1/+7"It doesn't matter, apple shouldn't be making a dime beyond a hosting charge."
Interesting. And you came to that decision how? - FlyingSpaghetti, on 06/18/2008, -3/+7Based on your logic, Target, Circuit City, Macy's, etc shouldn't make any money either since they're just hosting the merchandise in their stores.
I guess the Chinese manufacturers should just open their own distribution channel direct to the consumers?- Travelsonic, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2
He didn't say that they shouldn't make any money since they host, they shouldn't make more than a hosting fee.
I don't know i'd agree, but I agree something should be done so the artist actually gets money, and not JUST Apple, and the major labels. - BoonTobias, on 06/18/2008, -1/+2i think there is a service like that, wallmart

- KMartSheriff, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Climb a wall of dicks.
- MacParrot, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2What's not to understand? Apple doesn't deal directly with most artists, mostly just with the studios. Kid Rock signed a contract where he essentially gave away all his rights for his own music. Now he's upset because the contract he signed as negotiated between him and his label entitles him to zippy from iTunes sales.
Now explain how that's Apple's fault?

- junkwheel, on 06/18/2008, -6/+18Oh *****, if Kid Rock boycotts Apple they will really feel it. Not just because his very popular music wont be on there but because lots of big credible artists in the industry listen to what Kid Rock has to say. This could really put a dent in Apple's bottom line in the not too distant future. It could prove to be a real turning point for them.
- banmaster, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1Its not that he wants to boycott them and possibly will, its that his name will be added to a steadily growing list of artists (if you could call him that) that that are speaking out publicly against the RIAA and Apple's dominance of the online (and offline now) music sales business.
There are going to be more and more of these people until a 'real' star stands up and says '***** you apple and the labels', and as soon as that happens the floodgates shall open.- Kelmon, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Really? Why? Unless they actually do something along the lines of Radiohead and NIN, this is all just talk. At the end of the day, they signed a contract (note: read and agree to the contract before signing it, Kid) and unless artists stop signing contracts then nothing is going to change. All Apple is doing is distributing an artists work, just like any other store. If bands want to produce and distribute their own work, then that's fine, but I wish they'd stop whinging about stuff they already agreed to.
- solid12345, on 06/18/2008, -13/+8Funny how every musician looking to get brownie points from millions of teenagers says to download their ***** for free, yet every concert I ever go to the band ALWAYS plugs their latest CD and tells you to buy it. They are lying if they say they "never see any money" from CD sales.
If bands get nothing out of signing with record labels why do they do it?- sgxyay, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11It is pretty hard to sell a lot of albums without the marketing and pr force of a big company behind you unless you are Trent Reznor or Radiohead who are already famous (due to big companies).
The record labels do pay very little to the artist per CD or download sold. For the artist, the selling of albums and radio play is basically just advertising for live shows (where they get paid a lot).
It is nice though, being on a tiny record label or independent like I am, to get 65% back from iTunes for music sold, and also selling off my own website. However, I sell hundreds of albums instead of thousands....
www.sgxmusic.com if you like electronic music. :) - treed, on 06/18/2008, -1/+3Every band I've seen recently (including those signed to major labels) have encouraged the audience to download their stuff, whether or not they're paying for it. Maybe you're going to the wrong concerts?
- kinseyincanada, on 06/18/2008, -0/+5because the cost of making an album, with a major producer, studio time, advertising etc... is all funded by the label.

- jefbob, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5I'm not really a Kid Rock fan, but like several other bands he has a song or two that I like and I kinda like his new single - All Summer Long. Being summertime and all, it kinda gives you a good feeling when you're sitting by (or in) the pool drinking a beer.

- MrZop, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Single Father, Dark & Grey, Abortion, Hard night for Sara, etc.. He has a lot of good songs, but of course all the asshats that bash him (or anybody else for that matter) have only ever heard radio singles and never actually listened to the artists catalogue of music. It's a shame people have begun this "hate everything" mentality.
- sexybobo, on 06/18/2008, -5/+1besides cowboy name one other song that was even close to being good.
- iamconanobrien, on 06/18/2008, -1/+39All Kid Rock hate aside... record labels keep a ridiculous amount of the money.
Someone should publish findings on the greed of record companies -- I'd digg that piece to kingdom come.- banmaster, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Its the same with DVD stuff. The labels keep roughly 70% of the profits BEFORE duplication, advertising and shipping are taken out.
- leahcim, on 06/18/2008, -3/+1If you think about how rich the artists can become, I don't see where its such a bad deal that the record companies get so much. They risk a lot signing a new person. Kid Rock would be working at McDonalds or in Jail if it wasn't for the record companies promoting him to big ***** when he was starting out.
All the record companies employ thousands of people, and are publicly held companies, and probably anyone with a 401k or a pension gets a piece of that. Do they make a lot of money? Sure, of course, their combined worth is about 10% of Google, just keep things in perspective.
I would like to think in that situation I'd rather not sell my art just for a big paycheck but if you look at the odds, the money looks good starting out, and its hard to not do it that way. There are successful indie artists and it requires a hell of a lot more perseverance talent and not as much money, for those people I have respect and more power to them, but its intellectual dishonesty to just hate on big "faceless multinational corporations" and blame them for all the ills in the world.
But pirate all you want, so what, I used to when I was younger and actually cared about music. Haven't really listened to much new stuff in the last 5 years or so.
Wow lots of rambling, I'm sure I'll get dugg down if anyone reads this deep into comments, but to make up for that ***** THE RIAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and yeah I hate DRM and all that crap as much as the next person. I suppose I find it hard to have sympathy for someone like Kid Rock.
One thing thats puzzling though, how I'm sure there are some of the same people on Digg who bitch about the RIAA on one hand and suck Apple's proverbial penis on the other, are people really that niave and deluded to think they're actually different from each other?

- astrotrain, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1The Record industry needs to have a couple of 8 tracks fired up their asses from a tennis ball machine... simple as that.

- nacrotek, on 06/18/2008, -10/+2Hmm, steal everything? Should be Obama's new campaign slogan! "Hey America! Don't work hard and make good decisions! Just steal the ***** you want! Or vote for me and I'll steal the ***** for you!" F*cking communist.
- shutaro, on 06/18/2008, -3/+3You mean sorta like W stole the last two elections?
- tacochampion, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4***** yeah dude.
I ***** hate those communists. And all those hut-dwelling minorities. You know it shouldn't be Obama's new campaign slogan though, because he'd probably win. You and I are in a shrinking minority. Oh *****, I ***** hate minorities, what do we do now?!?! - VolSurrealist, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5Why do people keep attributing stealing to Communism? Read a book, children...
- shutaro, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2You know who reads books? ... Communists, that's who.
- nacrotek, on 06/18/2008, -2/+1When someone takes something from me that's theft. Liberals use the Government and it's threat of force to steal my money to promote a Communist utopia where the "earners" and the "doers" are brought down to the level of the "wanters" and "feelers".
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 06/18/2008, -13/+14I never respected Kid Rock until now, ***** Apple.
- KMartSheriff, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5Yeah! How dare they sell music!

- Tyrghast, on 06/18/2008, -4/+5A Kid Rock article? *straps in and gets ready for a hearty gut laugh*
- leprix, on 06/18/2008, -6/+4dangit. i really wanted bawitaba for my itunes party mix.

- logicalnoise, on 06/18/2008, -2/+6tell him to sign up for tunecore or cd baby. both are cheap and tune core doesn't even take anything out of your royalties.
- AppleGeorge, on 06/19/2008, -2/+1And yet I've never heard of either, which will probably explain why nobody would do that.
- logicalnoise, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2trent reznor and jay-z are only a couple of the big acts using tunecore. I've been using them to distribute my music for years. and yes of course you've never heard of my music.
- AppleGeorge, on 06/19/2008, -2/+1And yet I've never heard of either, which will probably explain why nobody would do that.
- DivineMonkey, on 06/18/2008, -3/+4I think he's right about how people should steal music so they'll want to go to shows. Since that's the only way artists make money these days anyway. He doesn't care about the record labels, obviously. And why should he? The internet is a great form of advertising/distribution and if your product is good enough, people will go see you live. I agree, ***** the record labels. Nobody buys cd's anymore anyway.
- Kelmon, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1The problem is that someone has to pay for actually getting the music produced in the first place, and whoever that is deserves at least some return on their investment. If the artist produces their own work, then they're perfectly entitled to give it away for free. If a 3rd party produces their work, then surely they should get paid?
- DivineMonkey, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Well if they all go the 'Radiohead' route and 'pay if you like', and if their music is good enough i'm sure people will buy it. And they'd be getting a hell of a lot more than 1 cent per album or some crap most of them get nowadays.

- picpak, on 06/18/2008, -5/+18Apple: Don't just steal Kid Rock's money, steal everything he owns.
- gannondork, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6Just don't steal the Hep C.
- themulf, on 06/18/2008, -3/+5Wouldn't he make more money with his music on iTunes then not? Wait he would? Oh he has principles, Kid Rock has principles now... interesting.
- AmandaZampieri, on 06/18/2008, -4/+7"Wait a second, you’ve been stealing from the artists for years. Now you want me to stand up for you?" this is one of the best things I've read this month!!!!
- Blankcheque, on 06/18/2008, -10/+4Jesus Christ.
The only reason he's saying that, is because Apple and the RIAA have to recoup their losses after studio time, and promotional fee's. No one wanted to buy his music, so like Metallica he shifts the blame to someone else. - nubalance, on 06/18/2008, -9/+4GO TO MY CONCERTS.
I MAKE MORE MONEY THERE ANYWAY.
JUST BE CAREFUL IF I SPIT OR SWEAT IN YOUR DIRECTION. - jmantra, on 06/18/2008, -8/+1Kid Rock needs to shutup, he makes bad music and he's an idiot who is full of himself.
- bbliss17, on 06/18/2008, -8/+3haha that is awesome...i do this anyway.
- Mikhail101, on 06/18/2008, -7/+5Wow he just ***** up in the end about oil companies there, what a douche "Steal everything."
- Metropolis, on 06/18/2008, -4/+7Take it easy on him guys. I think his music sucks as well, but he is/was pretty popular and this is a good statement to the public. I hope more popular artists come out and say this stuff so the word spreads.
- maretten, on 06/18/2008, -5/+10This pains me, but.... I kinda agree with kid rock. NOOOO! Nevermind!! I will change my values before I agree with that talentless hack!!!
- Kenzan, on 06/18/2008, -3/+3Like his music or not, you know he plays like, 10 instruments really well, right?
Oh and, he's got about 60 million more dollars than you,
....and FTW he gets to bang Pam Anderson every night.
just something to think about that during your shift at Pizza Hut tonight.- maretten, on 06/19/2008, -2/+1A. Saying he plays the instruments "really well" is false because if he did play instruments well, his music wouldn't be *****.
B. 10 instruments??? Okay- maybe guitar and drums- however I don't see the ***** playing 10 instruments (***** oboe or something???)
C.George Bush also has more money than me
D.Tommy Lee got back together with Pam Anderson
E.You defended Kid Rock, meaning YOU'RE probably the retard who works at pizza hut.
Suckmaballs.- Kenzan, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Look douchebag, if I wanted your opinion, I'll rattle your stinkin' cage.
- Rapter09, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1I promise you, Kenzan, the last thing *anyone* wants to do is ***** Pamela Anderson every night.
And if you think wanting to ***** Pam Anderson makes you a man, you need to get back in your ***** time machine and come back to 2008, not 1989. It ain't Baywatch-era anymore. She's a disgusting, ugly ho'
- maretten, on 06/19/2008, -2/+1A. Saying he plays the instruments "really well" is false because if he did play instruments well, his music wouldn't be *****.

- allengeer, on 06/18/2008, -2/+2Kidd, this is for you. Your time is up. You're done. The whole hip-hop-country-rock thing has been sampled by the good people of this planet and they've decided they were high when they were listening to it. So what you need to do, just like your good albeit less red neck friend Eminem, you need to go find a hole, crawl into it, and get fat. The world has had its way with you. Apple and the labels arn't paying you any money, because no one buys your awful cacophony of pseudo rap and rockabilly. Get over yourself. I hope you choke.
