Leaked Screen Shots Of Mythical Digg Recommendation Engine
techcrunch.com — Digg has been talking up a new Recommendation Engine that intelligently suggests new stories to users for almost a year. TC has some details and a couple of leaked screen shots, which may or may not be real
- 2133 diggs
- digg it
- albiniak, on 06/30/2008, -27/+192for the sake of anonymity, we'll call the source "kevin r."
- Pogojoe, on 06/30/2008, -86/+3for the sake of a dumb comment, we'll bury "you".
- bigwillystyle, on 07/01/2008, -0/+17hows that for irony
- AutoTom, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2haha epic
- peteophile44, on 06/30/2008, -3/+128No, that's too obvious...uuuh, let's say K. Rose.
- specialK16, on 06/30/2008, -2/+29Glad at least SOMEONE got the reference.
Dugg for the Simpsons!
- specialK16, on 06/30/2008, -2/+29Glad at least SOMEONE got the reference.
- OwdenBowden, on 06/30/2008, -14/+2Who cares. If it works anything like the comment system we are all doomed.
- vvaduva, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9Yeah...leaked, released...what's the difference? :)
- virtualonliner, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2Do not mean to wreck your fun. I get your intent here. But comment #21 on the blog post, although obviously, I cannot attest the identity of the commenter says it ain't so.
21. Kevin Rose
June 30th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Its a lie! Its all a lie……- sparkleyflowers, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3I really REALLY hope Kevin Rose knows how to spell "it's".
- Pogojoe, on 06/30/2008, -86/+3for the sake of a dumb comment, we'll bury "you".
- nobody2k, on 06/30/2008, -6/+301What? I was doing just fine reading 16.000 upcoming stories per day.
- Gryffydd, on 06/30/2008, -3/+80Dude, no need to tell us down to the thousands decimal place...
/Kidding but seriously, every time I see the "." thousands separator I get a momentary page fault error in my brain.- Acglaphotis, on 06/30/2008, -4/+32Maybe he's from latin america or spain, we do it that way ( ',' is the separator for decimals, like 2.4 would be 2,4) and it gets confusing.
- HonoredMule, on 06/30/2008, -25/+3I always wonder how they manage not to constantly confuse decimal numbers with short comma separated lists. I can handle dark skin, slanted eyes, and strange customs. But these European number/data formats stand for tyranny and all that is evil. They constantly throw Exceptions in my mental framework!
- akira117, on 06/30/2008, -20/+3Whoa this constant need to think makes me want to forum a klan to rid the earth of these evil people
/joking....or am I ^_^ - Mononuclear, on 06/30/2008, -5/+23most the rest of the world uses , as the decimal place and . as the thousands. US likes to have it's own little way for things that tends to screw anyone from the US when they travel abroad. IE miles, feet, pounds, Fahrenheit, etc.
- JulyZerg, on 06/30/2008, -10/+1I've never seen anyone use a decimal as a separator, and I've only seen a comma a few times, always by people over 60.
- Gryffydd, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7Here's a list of the format used by various countries
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousands_separator#E ... - LeonidasStokely, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2@Mononuclear
It could be worse, you could be British. We expect everyone to get English absolutely right regardless of where they are, and most of our measurmements/ assumptions etc are completely incompatible with RotW. - ultrafez, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6@LeonidasStokely
Our measurement system (metric) is the easiest to calculate with though... I never did understand the attraction with the imperial system. - Gryffydd, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3The worst thing about being British would be using both Metric and Imperial systems. Switching back and forth would be a pain.
- ultrafez, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2@Gryffydd
Yes, it is a pain - I generally use a combination of both, I use imperial for large distances such as miles, but metric for small distances (metres, centimetres, millimetres).
Although you do get to remember the conversion between inches and centimetres quite well (2.54 centimetres per inch)
- megamod, on 06/30/2008, -2/+9if all "16,000" of your diggs per day match all of my diggs and we're like super-duper-ultra digger buddy compatible we should hangout sometime =). This thing is going to be better than match.com.
- Gryffydd, on 06/30/2008, -3/+80Dude, no need to tell us down to the thousands decimal place...
- SirPopper, on 06/30/2008, -0/+15TechCrunch has insider knowledge ;-D
'The Upcoming section allows users to sort by category, freshness, number of diggs and number of comments, but the sheer volume of stories means it’s nearly impossible to find interesting news. The new Recommendation Engine section will be replacing Upcoming entirely from what we hear.'- dinostabOMG, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4It's a cool idea, and I hope it works. I wonder if it will cause increased factionalization on Digg, though.
- Kyan, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6Increased factionalization would be a huge step forward as far as I'm concerned. You never Digg or comment on RonPaul? He'll never make it to your recommendation page.
Even better, try this: the ability to digg or bury a source site. Like all websites from which stories have been submitted over the past day, week, month are on a side bar in my profile. And I can go through and bury, huffingtonpost, jedreport, dailymail, etc, etc and Digg bbc, washingtonpost, iht, nyt. And story from a page with a huge bury index should need several million diggs to get to the front page. Digg me up if you agree with that. - Hefelumpman, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Factionization (which is an awesome word) is a definite issue, but then again, we don't really know how the recommendation engine is implemented.
The only real faction I can see is within politics, i.e. Obama/McCain. There's a possibility that if you digg a lot of political stories, it'll give you more political stories, and not necessarily just a subset thereof (At least, that's what I'd like to see).
Fanboyism isn't really factional because they'd only really want to read stories about the hardware that they own - I don't own a mac, so I don't digg Mac stories - doesn't put me into a faction.
- Kyan, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6Increased factionalization would be a huge step forward as far as I'm concerned. You never Digg or comment on RonPaul? He'll never make it to your recommendation page.
- NJank, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3upcoming is good if you want to see what's been submitted in the last 7-1/2 minutes. With the number of submissions, that's about all you'll see on page 1, and who's going to bother with page 2 after that. Thus, if your submissions don't get a bunch of diggs in the first 10 minutes, it's dead.
- rabbro, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I think it should be called the 'Recommengine' (:
- dinostabOMG, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4It's a cool idea, and I hope it works. I wonder if it will cause increased factionalization on Digg, though.
- guillebravo6, on 06/30/2008, -5/+85This story is hitting the Front Page gauranteed, nice post
- mnortei, on 06/30/2008, -0/+42of course it is. Digg loves stories about Digg.
- neuens07, on 06/30/2008, -1/+33Unless of course the title is "This is Why I Love Digg"
Thankfully we have stopped front paging that *****
- neuens07, on 06/30/2008, -1/+33Unless of course the title is "This is Why I Love Digg"
- mnortei, on 06/30/2008, -0/+42of course it is. Digg loves stories about Digg.
- fluidfoundation, on 06/30/2008, -3/+75Get your copiers running, Mixx!
- BrendanSheehan, on 06/30/2008, -1/+12They use mixers.
- protocolor, on 06/30/2008, -8/+1ironically, you're copying a slogan apple used against microsoft.
- fluidfoundation, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5man..... I hate to do this.
O RLY? - gn0stik, on 06/30/2008, -5/+1how is that ironic?
- down1nit, on 06/30/2008, -4/+1You *literally* took the words right out of my mouth.
- mhuggins, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Literally? So he put his fist in your mouth, or what?
- fluidfoundation, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5man..... I hate to do this.
- TH3W1R3D, on 06/30/2008, -1/+54I really hope those pics are real. Looks impressive.
- gameyharp, on 06/30/2008, -16/+6103 diggs within 30 days? What a pussy.
- charbarred, on 06/30/2008, -7/+23Yeah, like the digg server can really handle a recommendation engine...half of the time it can't deliver my friends list, how will it be able to parse all my data and recommend stories in relatively real-time?
- Hefelumpman, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the time spent on implementation was devoted to scalability. We don't know how the system was implemented, or what classification methodology they used. Hell, we don't know *anything*
- zeabu, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Try with less than 3000 friends.
- charbarred, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Why?
- kevinrose, on 06/30/2008, -3/+284Note: The old 'upcoming' is still there, it will be a single click to switch back if you prefer the old site.
- AmazingAndrex, on 06/30/2008, -2/+120I like how even though this screenshot is "leaked" you still fully endorse and digg it. :) No really, it's nice some people don't throw NDA forms all over the place.
- OWNAGETIME, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6This isn't leaked.... there is a video on the digg blog... the people at techcrunch simply took screenshots of the video showing all of this and more....
- richbradshaw, on 06/30/2008, -1/+20When will this be live?
- UltramegaOK, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5There's no words there.
- sovereign3, on 06/30/2008, -8/+3I'll bet the ***** THING SUCKS!
- TSSaloic, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1This Week.
- blackdude, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8Well, that was confirmed quick ~ cool. I'm down, I just hope it doesn't slow anything down ^^.
- thepromise, on 06/30/2008, -25/+7Buried.
Shouldn't you be working?
... oh wait. - Hefelumpman, on 06/30/2008, -5/+2Will we ever get any idea of how the system's been implemented? Algorithms/Techniques, etc??
- digjam, on 06/30/2008, -7/+2How come you dugg your own comment Kevin Rose? ( For those who want to see what I am talking about add Kevinrose as a friend and then see this comment)
- defaultdigger, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7noob
- digjam, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4really?
- TSSaloic, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Comments start with a +1 rating.
- digjam, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I know.. but I am talking about this line:
"Dugg by friends: kevinrose" on the comment posted by kevinrose
Cmon guys... I aint a noob here..but u really dont know what you are talking about!
- thegreenspanput, on 06/30/2008, -6/+0kevinrose, why did you ban suzywang3000? Do you think you're Mao Zedong?
- TSSaloic, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1On a related topic, Rule #1 of Digg is:
Insult Kevin Rose == Burried.
- TSSaloic, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1On a related topic, Rule #1 of Digg is:
- AmazingAndrex, on 06/30/2008, -2/+120I like how even though this screenshot is "leaked" you still fully endorse and digg it. :) No really, it's nice some people don't throw NDA forms all over the place.
- erad222, on 06/30/2008, -16/+1In before 404
- Tribis, on 06/30/2008, -10/+171Great now I can get MrBabyMan stories delivered to me in real-time.
- diskit, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I'm waiting for the engine that allows MrBabyMan to automatically repost stories stolen form other digg users rather than having to do them manually.
- elshizzo, on 06/30/2008, -1/+75Digg-harmony will find your one true digg soul mate :D
- lordtyros, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2oooooooooOOOOOOOooooooooooo yeah yeah yeah
- ell0bo, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5sweet, a new system which can show me which girls I should be virtually stalking because they don't realize how just truly compatible we are. Because... I really am a great guy, and I should be able to find a girl which truly appreciates me.
- sdcarter, on 06/30/2008, -1/+18Will this make it easier for me to get my lolcats, xkcd, and re.re.re.re.OMG! Internet Classics fix for the day?
OH! I've got it! In the submission area, create something like "Users who posted similar stories like - 4chan, icanhascheezeburger, and cracked.com"
Dammit, Digg! Don't let me down! Be awesome again!- byttle, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3digg ceased to be awesome when the internet ran out of new content and you realized you were looking at old content every day.
- xsecretfiles, on 06/30/2008, -11/+2what's digg.com?
- zeabu, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7You're familiar with burried.com I see.
- Vazelos, on 06/30/2008, -1/+12I will sure give it a try but I will be cautious as I don't want to limit myself of stories to read. That one story from a topic that I don't usually digg can sometimes be very interesting.
- tripledjr, on 06/30/2008, -3/+114The irony of a leaked Digg image ending up on front page of Digg makes me cry tears of love for Digg.
- narcofiche, on 06/30/2008, -8/+2"Leaked."
- ryanksherman, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1No, no. It's "leaked"
- narcofiche, on 06/30/2008, -8/+2"Leaked."
- nogChoco, on 06/30/2008, -8/+1Diggers like me.
- HunterSlayer, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6From social network to dating site. As long as I don't get paired up with guys then I'm all for it.
Jokes, looks like a good idea, hopefully it will turn out to be relevant and useful. - bpapa, on 06/30/2008, -1/+10Maybe this is why "cloud view" disappeared?
- dtd00d, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4Cloud view has become the most useless thing ever in the past year or so because of how many undugg submissions there are.
Remember when it had a purpose? Those were the good days of digg... - fudged71, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I think all those 'modes' are still active, if you plug in the previous URL for them... but unfortunately all the links to these modes have been erased :(
I enjoy upcoming with "most diggs - story view" or "most diggs - cloud view"
- dtd00d, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4Cloud view has become the most useless thing ever in the past year or so because of how many undugg submissions there are.
- tf5bassist, on 06/30/2008, -10/+4awesome that Kevin dugg and commented on this. w00t!
I'm seriously stoked for this feature to roll out. Upcoming is more and more making me depressed. so much spam. - DuffyDirect, on 06/30/2008, -2/+5TC? Magnum's black friend from Magnum P.I.?
- seandfeeney, on 06/30/2008, -3/+22Dugg by Kevin Rose so it must be accurate.
- donkz, on 06/30/2008, -1/+40Can we also get male/female indicator?
- RachaelMichele, on 06/30/2008, -1/+16What for?
- kevinwiz, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4it's in your profile
- YesImAChick, on 06/30/2008, -3/+37or your username
- soulkitchen, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Or your genitals
- fudged71, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5but that would make guys highly disadvantaged for getting diggs/thumbsup :(
- Heavypettingzoo, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4can u imagine the attention both girls on digg would get???
- matito10, on 06/30/2008, -2/+13Dugg for the word Mythical.
- 2clone, on 06/30/2008, -6/+1This is nothing new. There was a site called Findory that did the same thing years ago. There are several others that are doing the same thing.
There's nothing innovative here people.- redmyse, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1buried for your attitude
- Phocion55, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Is this driven by APML? Does anyone know? Just curious since you can export your Digging activities as APML.....
That'd be sweet.- cesclaveria, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3for everyone else not update with your internet acronyms:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APML - sfrench, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6No, we don't actually drive the recommendation engine using APML. However, we do generate APML documents in your user profile. If you log into your user profile, right next to "Most Dugg Topics (last 30 days)", you should see an APML feed icon (little green icon).
- Phocion55, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Cool thanks for the clarification!
- cesclaveria, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3for everyone else not update with your internet acronyms:
- MrCalifornia, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6I really hope they carry this functionality over to the rss feeds. Personalized RSS is a must.
- YesImAChick, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I totally agree, and if it's not, I'll be bugging non stop.
- Kyan, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1ON NOM NOM NOM NOM. Oh, Stop.
- ultrafez, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2I'm sure it will be, this is Digg we're talking about!
- YesImAChick, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I totally agree, and if it's not, I'll be bugging non stop.
- marksmayo, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1If this is anything as "reliable" as the "We think we may have found a duplicate" engine, I'm not holding out much hope...
- joestump, on 06/30/2008, -1/+15The duplicate engine is horrible. We know it, you know it, people who don't use Digg know it. We've got a working prototype using LSH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locality_sensitive_ha ... that should be rolling out in the coming months. We'll also be moving the duplicate detection to before you enter the information. As for image detection we use the awesome Idee service, which works exceptionally well.
Also, the Recommendation Engine is working just fine. We'll be bringing it up one cylinder at a time Real Soon Now. Or not. Who knows. Well, I do. Oh, how I love to tease. Seriously, real soon now.- califloridan, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2yup ;-}_
- fudged71, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3That LSH wiki just blew my mind. literally.
yeah, I literally just used the word literally.
Idee works great! I've been using the firefox plugin for a couple days, to find higher-resolution versions of great pics/photos.
nice tease. Can't wait to see the new system.
p.s. can you please bring back the 'upcoming' links to filter modes? aka, "most diggs", "most comments", etc.
- zeabu, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2It can never work if people choose to ignore it.
- wanderingsun, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1This is going to be great for sponsored content. :-|
- joestump, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8Not it's not. This works exceptionally well for blocking spam content. If you don't Digg the same stories as spammers (highly unlikely as you probably don't Digg spam) you won't see any spam. If you DO Digg spammy stories then you'll only see spam. The whole point is to only see stuff you're most likely interested in based on previous Digging history.
- PullingTeeth, on 06/30/2008, -2/+1That's a lot, the most I've ever read is 14.
- PullingTeeth, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1This is terribly out of place, and I'm pretty drunk right now, so I know this comment will get buried down by anyone who sees it, but please, a well dugg comment would make my life. :(
- seanieb, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Now Kevin will really have to get around to making that intro video...no more procrastinating ;-)
- SethEllis, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4I love it. Such a system will defiantly been an improvement to Digg, and will fix a lot of the issues the site has right now.
- duckyinc, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3Yee now spam recommendations instead of shouts..
- Kev585, on 06/30/2008, -3/+2Actually looks sexy
- nomadbea, on 06/30/2008, -2/+2There goes productivity time. :(
- devincalloway, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3It has been long overdue.
- h0zae, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8video http://blog.digg.com/?p=127
- danc4498, on 06/30/2008, -2/+5Awesome, now maybe I'll actually make some friends on Digg.
- antdude, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Yeah, maybe I will find a female mate here. Yeah right, there are no girls on the Internet esp. Digg!
- MrSarcasm, on 06/30/2008, -3/+5Leaked? Yeah right.
- yabos, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5How is it leaked when kevinrose is twittering about videos
http://tinyurl.com/67w7tb - junskey, on 06/30/2008, -6/+1gay
- sig331, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1These images are shown in the Digg Blog posting.
- qbthemc, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Kevin Rose got the lowest recommendation.
- Wkall, on 06/30/2008, -3/+1buried for false title
- AxsToro, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1No Top 10? Or is it under the "Diggers like you"?
- Wronghead, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I guess I should start digging things, then.
- digjam, on 06/30/2008, -0/+14"COMPATIBILITY" ??????????
Digg.com IS turning into Match.com ! - megamod, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3"If the algorithm works to properly match me to other users with similar interests, Digg can become the first place I check every day for interesting breaking news in a variety of categories..."
TRAITOR...what do you mean Digg isn't the first place you check EVERYDAY for NEWS??? - juliocgrajales, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1Damn it been a very long time since Digg has given us something to talk about. By the way one of the main problems I find with the commenting system is that it sometimes loads all the comments and its crazy reaching the Add a Comment, after using the scroll bar its gets annoying.
- MMaster23, on 06/30/2008, -6/+5lol .. and why do we care?
- juliocgrajales, on 06/30/2008, -1/+2something to do, lol

Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
