Meebo Tries To Challenge Facebook Chat
profy.com — With the success of social networks' IM, Meebo saw an opportunity and capitalized on it. The concept is quite genius and should be very profitable - if social networking sites all go the instant messaging route, and Meebo can convince them its meta-platform is worth their time and money.

- futileboy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4This is interesting. Personally I'm not a fan of web based IM. There are starting to be too many tools that do the same thing. If Meebo can help fix this then I'm all for it. I'd like to see more tools to bring everything together under the platform of my choice.
- SvetlanaG, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1To me it really more about having all the contacts on various platforms the IM application is installed on joined in one place. And if Meebo can ever do this, I'll be the biggest fan.
- ning, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Instead of trying to create an all-in-one instant messenger, fraught with differing competitive and political agendas, i see a more simple approach, and one not requiring the improbable and undesirable, yet another instant messenger.
Many of us already use multi-service apps such as http://Pidgin.im —formerly gAIM. Integrate into these apps a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) client to search and find friends from existing social networks and vCards. Most mail apps already support LDAP address lookup. I can see Plaxo providing a service like this. I can see Google providing an LDAP interface for searching the open Web, and also for Orkut, Open Social, and Android.
- megabuzz, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2sounds cool, but....
- msaleem, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2It's about time someone challenged Facebook...
- SvetlanaG, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Exactly - and I do feel Meebo is one of the best technology solutions for IM - and if this kind of service is available for IM on any social network, it would have been absolutely perfect.
