Myspace blocks the letter "i"
mashable.com — This is just bizarre: MySpace has started to filter out the letter “i” on MySpace blogs - all of them. No matter where the letter “i” appears in a word or sentence, it gets replaced with “..”. The only place where an “i” can be used is in the title of a post.

- shadowmoose, on 10/11/2007, -88/+9People adapt, my friend put regular buttons as hotkeys to pictures so when he typed to me on MSN messenger it would show a picture instead of a letter, I was reading it easly in less then a week.

- mfratt, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17Myspace is trying to eliminate the individual. They prefer to use "we".
Read Ayn Rand's Anthem if you don't follow.- Jenovaside, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3or dont , that books sucks.
dystopia is still better then a world with myspace- jtrwallace, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1And if you like Ayn Rand as I do, read her semi-autobiographical novel, We the Living. It is an amazing book. It really lets you understand what it was like in the beginning of Soviet Russia.
- BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5The "I" as Ayn Rand defines it is an artificial construct anyways.
The choices you make and therefore your "self" is heavily restricted by the society and time one finds oneself in. I cannot chose to be a time traveler, since time travel has yet to be invented. Nor can I chose to be Pharaoh of all Egypt, since I find myself in a society that doesn't allow for such things.
You are just as much a part of the society you're in and cannot remove yourself from that role as you are a free agent.- mfratt, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Deep *****, but I like it. Since when do Diggers actually know how to construct an intellectual response?

blup3ace... I'm pretty sure that mult1 was saying that since all anyone on MySpace is themselves (granted, look at the name of the site), if they blocked both "i" and "me" then nobody would be able to talk about their normal subjects.
I sat and laughed a good while then signed in just to digg it up. - BigJ27, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow, you two got it down good. You tell him. I'm sure he didn't realize 'm' and 'e' are me. It must be really ridiculously stupid of him to also take the filtered out letters out of the name right?

- JeremyBanks, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Impressive in what way? It's huge memberbase, possibly, everthing else about the sound is ***** pathetic.
- 83457, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13They were at a ColdFusion conference a couple years ago as part of a case study and promotion for a alternative ColdFusion server that could run on .Net (versus the current Java or old C++ versions). It was obvious from some of the comments that they weren't exactly following good development practices. I believe they told some stories about throwing up updates dozens of times a day but if things broke a flash game would be made available to members of the site which they could play until the problem was fixed. Also something about moving to another room in a data center and it being a complete disaster.

- duffsstuff, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Who the hell found this? Is there anyone still using myspace? I am glad that the letter i is gone because now all the dumb asses on myspace will either get a life or end theirs. So the world in the end is a better place because of it.
Also, isn't "i" the worst letter of them all. I personally like the letter d.- pronouncable, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Is there anyone still using myspace?"
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say yes.- mtheoryx83, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6In Soviet Russia, MySpace uses you.

- brianez21, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32When you enter invalid things into Myspace, for example tags with a .php file, or an unacceptable or , they are replaced by ".." characters. It looks like somebody at myspace HQ needs to brush up on their REGEXP skills! :-P
PS: Don't ask how I know this.- mrgoat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25how do you know this?
- brianez21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ok, see where there are missing parts of my sentance? That is because Digg stripped out (img), (script), and (embed) that I wrote using angle brackets.
@mrgoat: Because I am in the typical demographic for myspace users and my friends "forced me" to make a myspace account. I guess you can say I was "myspace raped."- zspitfire04, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1sounds kinky?
- TigerClaw, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1I checked myspace and some of my posts I can still see the i. So maybe they must've fixed the problem.
- penguinofhonor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1censoring only happens on myspace when you post something new or edit something old.
- konforce, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Written on http://www.myspace.com/josiahhomer many months ago:
"Here is a simple example of why the filter system is impossible to maintain. foo.innerHTML is the same as foo['innerHTML']. The latter string can be broken into many pieces. How are you going to detect that? The current myspace method would be just to eliminate the ability to type the letters i,n,e,r,H,T,M, and L. That would do it! Of course you could no longer spell a lot of your favorite words..."
I guess they took his advice. ;)- strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Or you know, they could go the way of message boards and not allow direct user input in ANY HTML like fashion (no ability to create scripts or style or any sort of data).
What am I thinking? MySpace using a true proven method, hah.- niczar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Or they could just parse the ***** HTML into a DOM tree and filter it properly, not just with lame ass regexp.
- strangewill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thats asking a lot more of MySpace, especially if they can't just run BBCode.
