New Digg Topics
blog.digg.com — Digg has added two new topics to the site. "Microsoft" and a special topic for the "2008 US Elections." There's a brief post on the Digg blog about it. Can't wait to see these fill up.
- 1638 diggs
- digg it
- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+206I was expecting an MS section to be added eventually, but the election section is a bit of a surprise. I think it's a good idea.
Nice job digg team, keep up the good work.- Schrodinger, on 10/12/2007, -19/+131What's funny is they ignored the picture section petition, while nobody really cared for an electino 08 section.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -5/+65Damn, I really loved watching the people complain for a Microsoft section.
No, seriously, it's about time. It's a good addition.
*Goes and enables the sections.* - Never mind, they're already enabled for me. Nice. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9Great, now I know which section to block before all the digg "political consultants" try to act intelligently.
- AJRiddle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22About time damnit, I've been pushing for the Microsoft one for over a year.
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -10/+50Yea, we have Linux/unix and Apple for gods sake. But No MS, it's time. 90% of the market, makes digg seem biased without it.
- sambtravis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+57Now all we need is a picture section...
/edit: didn't notice Hilldu said it already sorry
Digg me down - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8Wait. Don't tell me they actually managed to forget this one little category:
http://digg.com/design/Digg_Needs_a_Picture_Section - DonWilson, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Where's the Photos section?
- Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3still no missing/dead persons or James Kim sections yet either. Still protesting for thoes.
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5"What's funny is they ignored the picture section petition, while nobody really cared for an electino 08 section."
We don't want Digg to be so much pictures. A few are alright once in a while, but if we had an official category, it would get to be too much. - YoctoYotta, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Yes, bravo on actively preventing a mess before one starts.
- oc12, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4No Images or Digg/Kevin Rose section?
No digg. - SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9IT would be more accurate if it was called the liberal presidential candidate love section. Given the current state of burying and group think on Digg.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5And they still don't have a Nintendo section? What is this?!
- t4k3n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11They should put a canned meat section too..
cause there is alot of spam these days. - DCJoeDog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10off to turn off the '08 election *****
THANKS DIGG - americanistsam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1this is expected from our Great Site .... I love u DIGG
- kazimir34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Are you really happy that it took ages to get a Microsoft section?
- ChazKato, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i submitted the idea for a MS section about a year and a half ago... glad to see it's finally being done...
http://digg.com/software/Windows_Category_of_digg - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We need a James Kim section fast, hes still out there and anything we can do quickly can possibly save him. Digg this up for James.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -41/+9About freaking time. No site can pretend to be about tech without a section for the most successful software company in the world. Slashdot for example is a joke.
- joestump, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25a.) Slashdot has a Microsoft category http://slashdot.org/search.pl?tid=109 and b.) My first site changes go live! Yay!
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -23/+67of7 your such a ***** toolbox.
(diggs all pro microsoft / anti linux/apple stories... trolls digg making stupid baseless pro microsoft comments... probably buries anything pro linux/apple too) - oc12, on 10/12/2007, -9/+470f7 you are on the Top 10 Hall of Shame List
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Finally, it's been asked for long enough ;) Good call by the Digg team.
- supernova17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Oh man, get ready for political opinion blog spam to fill up the 08 elections topic. *sad*
Automotive news section please, please, please. Also, maybe general US news.- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+64No no, this is a good thing. Now I can just uncheck that box and forget all about it until 2008 actually comes.
- Hidama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Yeah, it's about that time -- the upcoming elections will clog up the web.
Good idea.
Dugg. - Kbiscu1t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Great, seeing all the recent Microsoft stories, but I don't think the '08 Elections will catch on...Now what about that picture section?
- poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2www.picli.com - will solve this... beta sign up finishes soon
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5By adding the election secton, Digg is alienating more than ever it's visitors from overseas. If this website gets too U.S. related, I for one am outta here.
- TheGilmanator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Well good for you. Or, you could just not read the US-centric Election section.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Here's a hint: Sections are actually a little more about being able to make their content go away with a couple clicks, than they are about attracting new content (though they're certainly about that too). See that "Customize" link up there? Click it and be happy.
- enderu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You've gotta be kidding me. If anything this makes it better for those outside the U.S. who don't care about the '08 election...just uncheck the box and forget about it. Or would you rather have them scattered about everywhere so you can't avoid them?
Try thinking things through a little bit next time. - twistee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am happy with the addition of the 08 election topic, but also agree with sfacets it would been more open to everyone if it was called 'elections' or something. This means, after the 08 US election it isn't a dead topic and also that other elections happening around the world can sit in a nice topic...
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Digg is a US-based website, with a majority of it's users being in the US. I don't see an issue here. Feel free to visit a site based in your own country if you'd like.
- naio21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A bit of democracy (pun intended) at last!
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2***the "2008 US Elections"
Good grief, that one is going to suck. There are no qualified candidates, on either side. I think I should like very much to block this topic altogether. - ehelbush, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5I am not a huge fan of temporary topics.
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think Microsoft's here for the long haul.
- mattman12345, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Picture section?
- poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.picli.com sign up for the beta now
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I'm gonna miss flag564....
He has a home, now. - Rowan187, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3aww, they added two topics on two extremely crappy things... Microsoft and the U.S.A..
- davejr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Hooray for the Liberals and M$ fan boys.
- dssstrkl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Well, clearly everyone's already said it, but its about ***** time! Its just a little irritating to see all the Microsoft news in the Apple and Linux sections.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Pics or it shouldn't happen ?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14About time a Microsoft section was added.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Look at all these people complaining about the lack of a picture section. There have been several pleas/petitions/open-letters on the *front page of digg* about adding a picture section. true, the MS section has been requested since apple and *nix got theirs, but it wasn't desired with quite the passion of the picture section. so digg adds MS and election '08 sections? i'm wholeheartedly disappointed in the lack of understanding digg seems to have of their users.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wholeheartedly agree. It almost seems Digg goes out of their way to avoid any sort of interaction with their consumers, which is the opposite of how most work. I know we search for ways to interact more with customers and explain things to them at my company.
You know the old saying: "Business is like tennis, those who serve well usually win" - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg was originally a tech-news site (and I wish it still was) and I think they should have had the MS category from the beginning. The picture issue has only come up since Digg went mainstream.
- captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wholeheartedly agree. It almost seems Digg goes out of their way to avoid any sort of interaction with their consumers, which is the opposite of how most work. I know we search for ways to interact more with customers and explain things to them at my company.
- CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Woot, finally I can block all those ***** Vista stories!
- SeanMoney, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Holy ***** this still digg right?
- emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I agree that Digg should add a pic section, but its not as easy as adding an m$ or 08 section. I'm sure they want to do something more than just having a story and labeling it as a picture, they may be trying to innovate in some way shape or form and that takes a little bit of time. I'm sure we'll hear something soon, you know that they're listening.
- 1389, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Sadly, knowing them, they'll mess it up and make Digg run even more slowly than it already does.
- SuperNick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8About time for the Microsoft one. We've had Apple and Linux/Unix for the longest time.
- WiseElben, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I'm pretty sure that the Microsoft section will be filled with mostly anti-Microsoft bashing, at least 80%. Not that it's a bad thing.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't worry. Some of us here are MS fans and will promptly bury any such tomfoolery.
- Jeffrey903, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would think that Digg isn't going to just create a Pictures section, but rather either a Pictures category with many subsections (like the Sports category), or as a new medium, like the Videos and Podcasting section. I think pictures is too important to have a simple normal section.
- foxmajik, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I don't recall anyone digging two stories to the front page over the 2008 election or Microsoft, but I do recall two articles sticking on the front page for a while with a specific request for a "photos" section.
Someone's not listening.- CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Relax... it's not exactly as easy to add an entire new subsection to Digg as it is to add two new topics.
- rtphokie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2We really need a Digg section to segment all the stories about Digg from the useful ones.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Goog, now the windows fanboys can quit bitching every time an apple story gets posted to the apple sectioon.
- ElumEnopee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Unless the Apple fanboys use the microsoft section as an arena for their "agenda" (i.e. to bash anything MS).
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No see it usually works the other way around when you stop listening to known trolls.
- Sonic_Molson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Still need a section for google, firefox, pictures and Macs.
- DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I love the fact that the first story in the Microsoft section is "Vista still vulnerable to hackers."
- sfraider24, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2A Microsoft category is long over due. Way to go Digg!
-SF
http://www.wasatchsoftware.com/microsoft.htm - concept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22008 us elections is a great section and will continue to be a great resource for the next ~2 years.
- DupeAHolic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0What they really need is a Sony Trash Talk section
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4An art section would be cool
- poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.picli.com sign up for the beta noooooow
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i don't like the ms section, or the apple section for that matter. they are companies, that is all. no company is worth it's own section. i like the '08 idea, although i will probably just avoid it as it will become a shoutfest pretty quickly.
- teiren474, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2i think that for all of the digg users who r over 19 ( for legal purposes ) there should be a PORN section.. omg that would be sooo awesome and make me laugh soooooo much omg
ps: in Canada thats the age when you are considered an adult- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think that it should be an addable catagory
instead of automaticly being there
so No one who doesnt want pr0n doesnt have it to begin with
and you should have an legal age just for that catagory - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Not saying that I WANT a pr0n catagory
Just that certain things be set if they have one - coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Theres no need for a p0rn category.
I get my p0rn from plenty of other sources.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think that it should be an addable catagory
- psyops, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Digg should just add the bury/digg option for which topics are shown in the heading. Microsoft would vanish overnight.
- steveatdownmix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4An election08 section? GREAT! Now I can block all of those articles in one swoop. After all, they are all just one big bush-bashing circle-jerk... Even if you hate the man, they get tiresome...
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree :)
I'm probably going to block the political section so I don't see it in my RSS feed, but I'll go visit it once I'm in the argumentative mood.
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree :)
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm glad to see Digg is responsive to MS and Obama. Now how about Digg show equal responsiveness to its user base and give us the ability to see who buried a story and why? I can't figure out why that hasn't already been implemented or at least promised in the near future, since Digg's whole premise is openness.
I can tell who is friends with whom and who dugg a story, but I can't see who buried one? That's ridiculous, since it only takes one weakness to allow a system to be hacked. Digg's transparency is what made it great, but it's opacity in that one regard is allowing people to prevent the hot topics from appearing on the front page. The net effect of such an exploit is that we're left with the same *****, watered down news we get from CNN or Fox.
I'm not asking Digg to share it's super-secret algorithms, although one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to realize the first Digg-like site to come along that has 100% transparency of its source code will inevitably replace Digg among the majority who prefer their media to be as open as possible. That aside, if Digg doesn't act fast to at least appease its user base on the obvious issue of burial-by-cabal, I for one will conclude that is by design rather than indifference and that Digg has only the desire to *appear* transparent rather than to actually *be* transparent.
Then I'll be forced to start a 100% transparent social news site, and then I'll steal all Digg's users, and then I'll start cozying up to Lala from Tikibar TV. And then you, Kevin Rose, will lament that your once-great site has become the new Pets.com. The internet is a wide open and fickle marketplace... keep pace or Digg will only exist on the Wayback Machine.- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It's nice to be able to digg a story down with anonymity. There would be far less digging down probably if people could audit what you didn't like.
- VhaidraU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And THAT, is the point. People are digging things down because they do not like the person or opinion, not because it is inaccurate or spam, etc.
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kevin, if you're still perusing this thread, please go check out my comment in this thread:
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Who_Buried_It_is_a_Bad_Idea
I think I may actually be onto something there, because I'm sure you and the rest of the staff have been scratching your heads over this. The idea I came up with there strikes me as being quite workable, and it actually helps the Digg staff to objectively identify the people burying for ideological purposes rather than because the story is legitimate spam. Thanks.
- digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2cant we vote on a picture section? im actually looking forward to it, some of the photos lately have been great
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Neat idea, but the politics thing won't work unless they alter the algorithm. As it stands, people will Digg each other down and nothing will really "survive" except for the liberal stuff. Some view that as good, some view that as bad, but ideas won't get shared or promoted.
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think the ability to digg down comments is sort of *****. I think the democratic view on stories is ok, but peoples opinions are peoples opinions. People shouldn't be dugg down just because they are un-popular. That is how societies remain closed minded.
- nevas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4good to see digg team moving away from biased by adding MS section otherwise it was blatantly biased site
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not at all.
I imagine that the only reason that Digg had separate Apple and Unix sections, was because we're both niche markets. It stopped us getting swamped in Winders stories.
But i definitely look forward to browsing the Winders section. - nevas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Having seperate sections for Apple and Unix but not MS itself showed that digg was biased. So I see there is no point in arguing about that fact. Again, its good to see digg adding new sections.
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not at all.
- cosequin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Nice. Now where is the spam^H^H^H^HSEO topic? I really don't care if you have to nofollow that section. Just DO IT.
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Now all they need to do is add an "athiests vs. christians" category so I can de-select it so I don't have to look at that ***** anymore.
- ElumEnopee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0From the looks of the section currently they should have named it the "Anti-Micrsoft" section
- OBDriftwood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It would be cool to have an anti-Microsoft topic....
Other than the linux topic.
And lets skip to the chase and rename the "Elections 08" topic the "Democractic fanboy" topic. - johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1great. digg is going downhill, very quickly. it stinks of USA in here, its full of americans and their petty american lives. i always thought this was an international site. not anymore it seems.
- johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2and, just to prove my point...watch the above comment get digged down to mexico (and this comment too most probably)
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Digg is a US-based site with most of it's users being from the US. These US users submit news that is important to them. Either get more of your fellow countrymen to submit non-US stories or go to a site that's based in your own country.
- SharkyTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to admit, my initial reaction to it was that it was a bit US-centric. I won't argue against its inclusion though. After all, digg is U.S. based.
Nuclearpenguins, your assertion that most users are from the US is a reasonable assertion, although i do question whether this is true. Is there any information available as to what percentage of users are U.S?
I'd also have to point out that, despite being in Australia, I have been following US politics a bit lately, in relation to presidential candidates. Whether we like it or not, US politics does have a great deal of bearing on world events. - coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ johnjohnstonson
This makes digg more accessible for international users (like myself), by allowing you to block the US election in one swoop.
- sonicvince, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well talking about features, correct me if I'm wrong but in the past you could search a story within those that you dugg. It's impossible to do that now and it's really annoying.
Did that just disappear or am I missing something?- 1389, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It went away awhile back. People complained, and there was some talk about bringing it back, but nothing happened. You can draw your own conclusions about the quality of programming at Digg.
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OK, with 8000+ diggs there is a story from 2 weeks ago http://digg.com/design/Digg_Needs_a_Picture_Section stating simply that we need a picture section. It seems digg is democratized except when it comes to important stuff. Adding an election '08 section is of arguable significance, as it does 'run out' of relevance, after the '08 elections are done and dusted. A Pictures category will remain important though.
DIGGERS DEMAND A PICTURES CATEGORY- SharkyTech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Perhaps you need to stop simply stating that demand for a picture category is being ignored and start thinking or asking why this may be.
- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"DIGGERS DEMAND A PICTURES CATEGORY"
*****, not all of us do.
I enjoy the front page because it gives me what I want to read at lunchtime without a load of ***** (except in the comments, of course ;) ).
A pictures section will add noise to this, with every digger who thinks they're cool posting a picture of "my mate billy bob when he urinated in church!" and other such hilarity that frankly the internets is full of already.
The pictures on Digg work because they're part of some other category, and because of this they usually add value to the site.
Digg me down, like it matters. But there is a reason the Pictures topic hasn't been added. - poohat1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.picli.com will feed anyother need, sign up for the beta quick
- 1389, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's because Digg does not have any idea of how to implement a new category properly. When the videos and podcasts categories were implemented, it was a mistake for them to put them into entirely separate tabs without providing convenient ways to see everything that you or your friends have submitted. For example, if you've submitted in all three categories, you must view three screens to see them
("submitted" is not available for podcasts yet, only "dugg" or "commented")
http://digg.com/users/(userid)/news/submitted
http://digg.com/users/(userid)/videos/submitted
http://digg.com/users/(userid)/podcasts/submitted
Similarly, to see what your friends have submitted
("submitted" is not available for podcasts yet, only "dugg" or "commented")
http://digg.com/users/(userid)/friends/news/submitted
http://digg.com/users/(userid)/friends/videos/submitted
http://digg.com/users/(userid)/friends/podcasts/dugg
And for the cloud views for the upcoming queues
(no separate upcoming and/or cloud view is provided for podcasts at this time):
http://digg.com/news/upcoming/cloud/most
http://digg.com/videos/upcoming/cloud/most
http://digg.com/podcasts
The upshot is that the sheer awkwardness of this three-part mess has caused people to not use the podcasts very much, and to submit many of the videos in the News categories instead of in the Videos categories. This is particularly true if the video has to do with a "newsy" topic that does not clearly fit into any of the Videos subcategories.
Therefore, I'd say that the way that Digg has implemented their categories is poorly thought out and, for the most part, hasn't worked very well. Digg's user interface is too strictly hierarchical, and gives too little flexibility for letting you see just what you want, all on one screen.
- madgravity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About time! It is like Digg ignored 96% of the population!!!!!
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, we need a digg news section. Would make things a lot more organized.
But it's about damn time digg got a Microsoft section. -
