You wear a low power camera around your neck all day long which records your entire day, every day. You upload this to your computer, index it for the people you talk to, the words you are saying, etc. BOOM You've got a fully computer searchable memory. (Better keep it encrypted though)
        On the down side you have concrete records of who you slept with that night you blacked out.

      If I had a petabyte drive now, I would store tons of music and video, uncompressed. I'd also store uncompressed WAV files instead of MP3s, and backup high definition video including Blu-Ray. Oh, and also porn.

          Times have changed. And that was only ~20 years ago, and I'm only 32, if we don't blow ourselves up, the future is going to be awesome.

          Then I remember being in awe of a hard drive that could store only 40 mb AND you had to park the head when you were done with it.

          Then you realize that storage will only get bigger and cheaper and faster as time goes on.

          What sucks is the failure potential for those high capacity drives forcing them to be in a redundant array from the get go.
          I just bought 2 750gb drives and 1 failed after a week. So I have an unmirrored new 750gb drive waiting for the RMA process.

        • FLarsen, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1I remember drawing a lot in paint as a kid, in the windows 3.1 days. I had to delete old drawings and other things to be able to save the new drawings. The image quality wasn't exactly photoshop either.

          Then we got one with about 120mb, which we later upgraded to one gb. After a while we got one with 120gb.

          Now I've got about 1.5tb, and I still need more.

        The disk will be used for the same stuff as now, but that stuff will take more space and be of higher quality.
    • BoneheadFarker, on 06/24/2008, -0/+85When I was a kid, the first computer I had used a cassette tape. It held enough for one game, or a few programs I wrote myself. I thought this was amasing.

      The second computer I had was a 286 with a 40 meg drive. This was an incredible amount of space, especially compared to most of my friends were playing with 8086s and floppies. At first I thought I would never fill it.

      The 3rd computer I had was a 486 DX 33 with a 120 meg drive. What a relief it was not to have to delete programs in order to install new programs. I could have my Leisure Suit Larry and Police Quest games installed at the same time.

      My 4th computer was an IBM PR200 with a 1 gig drive. Truly, now I had more then enough room. Until I discovered MP3s.

      My 5th computer was a Celeron 300 with a 3 gig drive. It was enough to hold my college work, Star Craft and War Craft, and my entire MP3 collection at the time. But the MP3 collection was growing steady.

      My 6th computer was an XP 2200+ with an 80 gig drive. This was an incredible amout of space that I never dreamed of filling. At least until I discovered I could download TV shows and movies.

      My current media box is an XP 2200+ with 2 500 gig drives. It has a little under 200 gig free, and I'm planning on adding a 750 gig drive after the summer.



      The bottom line is...you will ALWAYS find something to fill your hard drive with...

        I just upgraded my iBook (yes, the G4 type) that has a 40gb drive to Leopard with iLife and I only have 24GB left to use compared with 35GB free to use when I had Panther and iLife 04 installed.

      We're running out of reasons to need that much storage. 1 petabyte would hold 40,000 HD movies @ 25gb a video. That's huge amounts of storage.

      Developing new storage technologies to handle this storage need is crucial to future production. I work for a large database company and we are working hard on improving the storage solutions for extreme data loads.

    Nowadays I regularly install games that would fir on such a drive, I'm running half a dozen drives in the 400 gig range and I'm always wondering where my space is going.

    With better quality media formats and stuff, I can easily see the use for TB upwards to PB being plausible.
    • MacGyver2210, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2It's not just the better quality that requires more space. 15 years ago there were really no stored music files that people would listen to, short of maybe the most avant-garde producers adopting computer technologies. That jump, from a hard media format being the primary, to a digital media as the primary format, will be the largest step, which we have already taken. I think filesize can increase exponentially until they invent some format such as 100PB 3-D Holographic VR Projection Discs or something that overload a human's senses so completely that it kills people. Who knows, maybe humanity will just evolve to integrate with the technology, even without the biotechnology research. Is there a definitive amount written anywhere as to what the human mind has for a capacity? Even if it's 20% of that capacity, what would be full capacity?
