news.com.com — At Defcon in Las Vegas, hackers breach networks, pick locks and play "spot the feds."

- StraightUp2U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Its like Christmas, only for Hackers!
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I love the Wall of Sheep. I'm just jonesin' to go the year after next, I'll be legal in Vegas.
- Chalito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I was there this year and it was an amazing event. The talks were awsome and the other guests that where there taught me alot. I also got to meet Patrick Norton which was kinda kool in a geeky way.
- Quag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Like spelling cool with a "k"? ;)
- bpinard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hope I am able to go before I finish college....
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I remember last year the Defcon wireless password sniffer published the passwords to the net. Where is it this year?
- Phusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah.. Defcon is pretty sweet. Does anyone know of any links to videos of speakers or anything from this year or previous years, other than the defcon.org archives?

- Sphinxey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I hope the digg effect doesn't come into too much of a factor, I always get scared when something small but good comes on digg, and then it just turns horrible, or goes away...:(
- phraud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree, and its a completely valid opinion - not sure why your currently at a -4. Defcon has been getting more and more popular each year. It's covered on TV, and in major newspapers, so in this case, I doubt if Digg will over-popularize Defcon. Most of the people who read Digg would probably be lost at Defcon anyway, I don't see a lot of "hacker" types posting here very often.
- jeb00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is exacly why the decision has been made to cancel Defcon next year.
- laughandsing, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Lies... it is on this year. My boyfriend is going! lol

- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3shhhhhh.. stop telling people about "spot the fed". Free tshirts aren't really free.
- gnukix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i kinda wonder what it's like out there now that it's become so popular. i feel like i missed the golden days of it. fire inspectors? venues? sounds a lot like CES, E3, LWE, and friends.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, the golden days of Defcon, like the year it was in Old Vegas and everybody waited to see the lighted canopy get hacked, but it never did (rumor was it ran on Amigas).
Or the year some twit drove an electric golf cart into the swimming pool.
Someplace I still have the photo a fellow attendee took of a BSOD on the MGM Grand's big display sign, though. In the days before digital cameras were ubiquitous and he had to go get like 100 of them printed at a Rite Aid to hand out.
Truth? I'd rather go to E3. - phraud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I'd like to go again.. I haven't been since '97 when it was just off Freemont. It was goodtimes to say the least!

- cyphin6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now that has got to be the coolest lan type party I've ever heard of, and the game is funny as hell, hack and defend the networks.
- hardkoretom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1putnam
they actually ran out of badges half way thru day 1 cause i got a crappy paper badge
i wish the talks had started on time on day 1 so i could have seen the fedex/kinkos card hack talk

- rottle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I attended this year's DefCon and I have mixed feelings. I am slightly disappointed at the presentations as the bulk of them could have been more technical. The 'community' feeling wasn't that felt. What was funny though is the American Darters Assosiation convention was also held in the same hotel, which started a few heated word fights between attendees.
- putnam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was there, too, and I have to agree about the lack of community feeling. There was also an overall lack of pranks :(
.. and what the hell was up with NOBODY showing up for the Minibosses private concert? I think they were playing way too early. I heard the penthouse party was broken up later that night, though I kind of skipped out on that.
I'm still satisfied having gone, mostly because I attended the discussion about 802.11 (from Black Hat), the hilarious Hollywood Hacker presentation, and the Blackjacking talk (about using a [stolen] Blackberry to create a tunnel out of a secure corporate network and run super hot SPLOITZ).
It's pretty lame they ran out of badges on Day 2 and didn't give attendees anything but a CD and a crappy paper badge.
I met some guys that figured out how to call in to the phones in the elevators and force pickup on the speakerphone. That was kind of funny, but better hacks could have been had... - WhoDey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@putnam
How did you go to the Blackjaking talk and the Hollywood Hacking talk. Weren't they at the same time? - putnam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The blackjacking talk ended early with like 15 minutes to spare for the Hollywood hacker talk, so I saw the tail end of it. The blackjacking talk was right on the other side of the wall, and we couldn't hear half of what he said because you guys were laughing so hard.. so I had to check it out :)
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm in agreement, it was a mixed bag; but many of the talks were very well done (hacking proprietary drivers), and some were downright bad, and way too non-technical (OSX hacking - telling us about Nessus, and that "there's a osx gui for this app...") but overall I really liked it. I didn't feel my 'synergy' among folks, but perhaps I didn't hang out with them enough, I was more intersted in the talks. Next year I"ll have my talks planned out better and I'll have a better idea of speakers, so I suspect I'll get more out of it.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's because since about 1999-2000 Defcon has become overly commercialized (just like Christmas).
- jeb00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was the first time at the new location so it was bound to be a little different. i thought the talks this year were really good. the worst was the warrocketing talk. not to hate on the concept, but it could have been done in a half hour.
skroo is right...war*ing is deader than fried chicken.
- putnam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was there, too, and I have to agree about the lack of community feeling. There was also an overall lack of pranks :(
- wolfzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dan. *****. Kaminsky. Picture 13.
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed, I saw him on a few great talks/panels, but were you at the TCP/IP drinking game Friday night? Yeah, he "did well" and was quite sauced. I congratulated him the next day for still making his 10am talk! Overall, I'm glad I went.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry but those dont convey defcon in its full glory, not that i would expect that much from a second rate tech news site like cnet.
Seriously taking a picture of an "I read your email" hat? lame. double lame. triple lame.- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1100% AGREE - LAME LAME LAME

- sunn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some picture were lame and some were cool,...does anyone have any info on the penetration testing cards?
