Swedes To Be Wiretapped, Despite Protests
torrentfreak.com — Despite public protests both online and on the streets of Stockholm, the Swedish parliament has voted in favor of a new “wiretapping” law which invades the privacy of its citizens by allowing the government to monitor web traffic and phone calls, without the need for court orders or similar authorization.

an interesting quote: "Your security is not in the hands of [Democratic presidential nominee John] Kerry or Bush or al Qaeda. Your security is in your own hands. Any nation that does not attack us will not be attacked." - masterm1nd, on 06/20/2008, -6/+6Osama Bin Laden, sounds like an honest enough guy. That's all I need to hear for my family's safety.
- bjornski, on 06/20/2008, -4/+9His motives may be *****, but I don't think his honesty has been called into question.
Would I agree with him? No.
Would I trust him? Yes, before I'd trust this administration. - masterm1nd, on 06/20/2008, -6/+1It doesn't even matter how honest he is. If he were honest as you so absurdly believe, that only means Osama and those under him won't attack Sweden. I'm fairly vertain I could find a country thats had a terrorist attack who hasn't attacked Osama. Plus, even the wiretapping thing could be viewed as an attack on Osama, thus he could attack Sweden without contradicting what he said. Bottom line, you simply shouldn't put your trust in anyone but yourself, especially not your enemy, regarding your own safety and well being.

- Skooma714, on 06/20/2008, -2/+9The Swedish are just as lazy and unwilling to do anything about anything as Americans are.
Politicians want power, they get it.- Radan, on 06/20/2008, -2/+7To be honest, we Swedes are one of the laziest people when it comes to things like this. Or maybe not "lazy" is the correct word, but we simply accept it. We hate changes of any kind, no matter what it is; changes = bad. Though, when it actually has changed we instantly goes along with it; "aright, it's not that bad, who cares?".
If this had happened in for example France, we would now probably be seeing a mass revolution of a gigantic scale, where at least a couple of noblemen would get decapitated.
Now, one thing I'd like to point out, is that if I have understood this correctly, this doesn't technically simply mean that it will now be legal to wiretap anyone at anytime.
This only means that it will regulated. Many other countries already wiretaps their citizens, but off the chart simply because if you ask for permission you may get a "no" as an answer.
While I'm completely against this, I couldn't really care that much about it, since we Swedes have nowhere near enough money and resources to go around and wiretap every Sven Svensson and John Doe.- graeh, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1security through obscurity isn't. :/

- gobbleplex, on 06/20/2008, -3/+7Hey, when other countries see the US do things 'in the name of freedom' it says to them it's perfectly okay to do it too. After all, we're the ones who set that bar, right? :/
- utahnkid, on 06/20/2008, -6/+3So if it's something good, they created it on their own. If it's bad, it came from America. Amazing logic.
- gobbleplex, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3That leap of logic was well over 50 feet.
- dinostabOMG, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1When did he say the latter?
- bjornski, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3Exactly. They're not the only country justifying things "because America does it".
- utahnkid, on 06/20/2008, -3/+2So which is it huh? Is America this disgraceful country that the world despises as we're regularly told or a country so highly regarded that our policies, even our bad ones, are directly copied? If we are so hated why would ANY country imitate anything we did? Make up your mind, because we can't be both.
- bjornski, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1If we were to start gassing an entire race of people, and another country followed suit "because American did it", would you STILL consider that "so highly regarded"?
Just because someone emulates you doesn't mean they do it because they admire you.
They just saw you get away with it first.

- ColinZeal, on 06/20/2008, -5/+4Terrorist target or not, it´s not a question of that. Sweden has a LOT of Iraqis and other refugees (because of the US) and the US wants to control those people.
The US?
Sweden is a bunch of pussies. Everything is bland, everything is middle of the road, nothing gets to stick out. That said, if something terroristique would be discovered, then the government would be too ***** pussied out to DO anything about it. Call in the US federal agents just like they did few years back with two suspected Egypt terrorists. A US government plane landed in Sweden, the agents arrested these Egyptians on Swedish soil and took them off to where ever.

The world is NOT ending, and we're not getting on any slide; in fact the whole playground doesn't exist. The people FAR outweigh the power of ANY government, and at the end of the day CHOOSE to live the way they do. It's like you forget that people ARE the government. In Brittan they take advantage of a very comprehensive video monitoring system and last time I checked Brittan wasn't a horrible place. The citizens haven't turned into drones, and the leaders aren't eating their cereal from the skulls of us measly commoners. In fact the last thing I read about it, an article submitted to Digg if you want to look it up, that said the very target of the system, crime, hasn't been affected at all and the system's value is in question. Stop fear mongoring. I know life can seem pretty dull and boring if you look at the reality of it all but you shouldn't just make up or go along with whatever retarted theory is getting all the attention now.

- dekki, on 06/20/2008, -2/+21First of I'm very against this law but there is a lot of misunderstandings about it.
The law gives the Swedish military radio intelligent (FRA) the right to intercept and record all wired communication passing the Swedish border, they already had permission for wireless. So the law does not give them the power to listen in on Swedes if they are communicating within the Swedish border. The reason the Swedish military want this law is because of our IT infrastructure. Lots of east European (Ryssen) internet traffics routes via Sweden and FRA wants to spy on it.

- AmonAmarth, on 06/20/2008, -11/+4This is pretty much why I'm so sick of white culture. It seems like this trend of over-security is sweeping the globe, and I'm pretty keen on getting out as soon as possible.
PS if John McCain gets elected the first thing I'm doing is obtaining a passport, the next thing is getting the ***** out ASAP. One love.- Nodnarbs, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Awesome if you can't stand diversity it is definitely time to gtfo of America. And I don't think Sweden represents "white culture" but uh thats a pretty dumb statement. Also us liberals get portrayed as un patriotic because of dumbasses who are like "oh if I don't get my way I'm moving to a different country"...awesome later bro, don't need ya or want ya. I think I'll stay here and stand up for the country I was born in and not be chased out some piece of legislation.

- d1gg3r1, on 06/20/2008, -0/+12This will no doubt set a precendant which will soon spread to other countries. Just because the majority of us live in larger countries does not make us immune to such government actions; to think otherwise is just ignorant. What we need to do is voice our distaste at such actions, so that similar transgressions might be avoided in the future. While the "outrage" started before the measure was enacted, it pales in comparison to what is no doubt coming... We are all already going to spend countless hours on the Internet, so why not take five minutes to shoot off an email, preferably one with some trace of intelligence, to the Swedish governement? If you have more time than I do, and more drive and desire to do so, start a movement. The "Internet" frequently boycotts companies for mishaps, albeit our attention span dictates that it never lasts very long (lol). If I saw a petition or a "boycottsweden.com" tomorrow, it wouldn't suprise me in the least. Anyway, all of the contact information for the Swedish governement can be found @ http://www.sweden.gov.se/sb/d/2052

Back about 10-20 years ago people would read Revelations and say things like, "Well I don't see how any of that could ever happen...the public would never allow a government to mark us like that!"
Well people it's starting to happen..and you can see how it's beginning to unfold. The public is allowing this all to transpire and be assured that this prophecy is coming to pass.
Nation is already rising against nation and with the rising price of fuel it makes everything go up including financial stress in families which causes a rise theft as people begin to get desperate to survive. - utahnkid, on 06/20/2008, -11/+3This is all the reason you should require for voting in a true conservative. Every Obama supporting liberal out there supports this kind of government-owns-everything ideology. If all of our communications companies and the lines they run on were owned by private citizens, the government would never be able to use it for anything the people didn't want it used for because the people own it. All of you that want support from your government from the cradle to the grave need to realize if they give it to you, they have the right to control every part of it including YOU. *cough* healthcare *cough* Keep the people in control!!
VOTE CONSERVATIVE!- dh122, on 06/20/2008, -2/+8You idiot, the conservatives CONTROL Sweden right now. In Europe, any party called Centre, Moderate, or Liberal is probably conservative in your book. In fact, the "socialists" in Sweden, the Social Democrats, voted uniformly AGAINST the bill. Who's protecting privacy?
- bjornski, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3You really expect him to understand that?
- utahnkid, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1You missed it bud. That's extra pathetic seeing as how you only had to read 12 words in before you reached the critical one. A TRUE conservative. Despite what Bush branded in your mind about what it means, and if you're old enough for this to not be the first big election you remember, is a politician that worries only about his stance on government, and to keep it as small and localized as possible. A true conservative obviously has opinions on certain matters but he knows they don't matter because he doesn't believe the government should have enough power to delegate either way in the first place. A true conservative is the rarest and most valuable politician because he basically believes in limiting his own power, something humans aren't very good at doing. Most of you that call yourselves a democrat or think of yourself as a liberal would be ashamed if you knew what that stance truly stood for. A true democrat supports a LARGER more POWERFUL government, higher taxes to pay for it all, and less individual freedoms; because after all you obviously can't control yourself. This isn't a point of argument, it's not my opinion, it's just simple fact. If you really want to try and convince me that at their core's they (conservatives and democrats) don't believe that then be my guest.
- pagno, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3"Every Obama supporting liberal out there supports this kind of government-owns-everything ideology"
Wow! *****. You. The government has NO authority beyond the Constitution, and this type of ***** is blatantly contradictory of said document. Therefore, your typecasting holds no water. You are awarded no points, and may whatever malignant god you follow have mercy on your soul.- utahnkid, on 06/20/2008, -2/+1What do you call universal health care? Higher taxes to pay for all these systems? They are LIBERAL policies. They are a perfect example of what someone would desire if they believed in a larger more powerful government. That is the very definition of a liberal. Genius.
- dh122, on 06/20/2008, -2/+8You idiot, the conservatives CONTROL Sweden right now. In Europe, any party called Centre, Moderate, or Liberal is probably conservative in your book. In fact, the "socialists" in Sweden, the Social Democrats, voted uniformly AGAINST the bill. Who's protecting privacy?

When are people going to learn that it doesnt matter who you vote for? THey are all the same. We need more of the classical liberal type in government to reduce the friggin thing to ashes and keep it that way.

- cipher64, on 06/20/2008, -0/+8Way to go democracy....really democracy has been made to bend over in the name of the war on terrorism. I get confused who's winning and who's losing, what the **** is this war all about again. People are dying by the hundreds of thousands, people are losing their rights by the millions, the only people I see benefiting from this whole fiasco are over zealous governments. The more these events unfold the more democracy seems to be just an illusion, vote once in a while and then just **** off. It's obvious that protests don't mean ***** to these power hungry politicians, but the public has been convinced that protests are there only options. Parliaments pass these laws happily and courts for the most part agree, who is going to bring change?
- dh122, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4If anyone is interested, this is a poor translation of a press release put out by the Swedish Social Democratic Party, the only major party to vote against the measure.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Defence will be collected during the Wednesday afternoon for the further preparation of the moderatstyrda the government's proposal. Thereafter, it will be debate and decision in the House during the evening.
Defence Committee chairman, Anders Karlsson (s) are not satisfied with the changes that have been announced.
-- No, this is a hastily. Now if you will postpone a case as well, we should take time to bear. They have had 365 days on them and now you should make it five in twelve.
According to Karlsson, the Social Democrats likely to vote "no" even after the changes because there is something new in substance.
To Anders Karlsson also commented on the proposal earlier this week:
-- I am strongly critical of the government's proposal "Act on signals intelligence." The middle-class government's proposal contains a number of shortcomings, among other matters, it is not the privacy of the individual enough. This is not met the requirements of a modern country must put up on the rule of law.
-- We place our military non-alignment and the security of the country first. This calls for a försvarsunderrättelseverksamhet. But it must be reconciled with a strong protection for the individual to avoid becoming avlyssnad or supervised without reasonable grounds.
-- The government bill presented does not have this protection and are therefore a threat to the individual's privacy. Integritetsskyddet is not acceptable in the government bill and that is why we shall vote against the proposal.
