- canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -6/+114why not just put phone functionality into a psp? i might actually buy one then. i don't see the need for a separately branded ps phone.
- thenativeraver, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6I wonder what ever happened to the whole VOIP thing that they promised?
- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14oh god no!! cant they learn from Nokia's mistakes with the N-Gage ? :-|
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1 sony > nokia any day
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2lol. So Sony is taking after Nokia's Idea and Nokia is stealing the iPhone design. So that means we have to wait 6 years for the Sony iPhone? When is Nokia going to borrow Sony's ideas?
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1 sony > nokia any day
- huntr2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=4415&NewsAreaID=2
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1lol @ nativeraver
what about the VOIP and instant messenger they promised nearly a week ago?
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1lol @ nativeraver
- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14oh god no!! cant they learn from Nokia's mistakes with the N-Gage ? :-|
- WiseWeasel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Because that thing is frickin' huge! Here's hoping they can release something that actually fits in most pockets and has a reasonable weight...
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2at least they have a better patent design team than apple
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15It looks like they took a PSP and added an early era cellphone to the back of it.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Oh dear God, why?
- Pikachelsea, on 10/10/2007, -9/+10Yeah, because that's just what consumers need... even MORE confusion about what they're supposed to do with a PSP.
- digitul, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11yeah who wants options, right?
- JrGhoull, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3its not the idea of options that people are having a problem with. sony has done this before with memory formats, and it looks like they're playing around with doing it with video game systems. if one company has too many types of one thing, they will have a hard time fully developing anything fully. personally i'm pissed because it seems like they are dissing the psp entirely. oh well though, god knows this is gonna come back and bite em in the ass.
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you mean how sony has had memory sticks and only memory sticks?
i love how my 4 gig memory stick pro duo that works in my psp/ps3 has and adaptor to work with my laptop and sony camera (and anything that has a memory stick pro slot)
- digitul, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11yeah who wants options, right?
- ikrit2006, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14The phone is going to be a PSP (PlayStation Phone).
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3No. PSPP, Playstation Portable Phone.
- texpundit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Actually...it's going to be a "PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP." (Think raspberry sound.)
Didn't anyone learn anything from the ROKR?
- texpundit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Actually...it's going to be a "PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP." (Think raspberry sound.)
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3No. PSPP, Playstation Portable Phone.
- walnoj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Well, I agree with you about VoiP being something that should be in PSP. If you read more in-depth, the Sony Ericsson guy says that they intend to sell casual games over this phone. That's not really what PSP is all about.
- donwilson2, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1iPhone > *
- thenativeraver, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6I wonder what ever happened to the whole VOIP thing that they promised?
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -16/+7Yay another phone the US networks prolly won't support!
- aknowles5139, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Stop bitching... at least you get the iPhone... us Canadians don't get it.
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6All because of the phone companies being such assholes about bandwidth costs.
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1all being mainly verizon and cingular / the new at&t or whatever the ***** they call it now
- Jorlwind, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2We also get 300 page bills. You can have that if you want.
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6All because of the phone companies being such assholes about bandwidth costs.
- bogatash, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11nice use of the word "prolly"
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Lay off the guy. It's obvious that the 'b' key on his keyboard is broken. I mean, no one could be lazy enough to actually type "prolly" unless they had to, right?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"I mean, no one could be lazy enough to actually type "prolly" unless they had to, right?"
Prolly
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"I mean, no one could be lazy enough to actually type "prolly" unless they had to, right?"
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Lay off the guy. It's obvious that the 'b' key on his keyboard is broken. I mean, no one could be lazy enough to actually type "prolly" unless they had to, right?
- aknowles5139, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Stop bitching... at least you get the iPhone... us Canadians don't get it.
- jhsiao, on 10/10/2007, -20/+10has the failure of the nokia n-gage taught people nothing? It'll be fun to see how Sony are gonna survive given the ***** that the psp and ps3 turned out to be and now this...
- bjs3171, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10the ps3 is no *****, and i don't own one.
- potp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11dude the psp is he 3rd highest selling console in the market.so i wouldn't call it *****.
- ronmexico, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Third place in a three way race.
- crzdmn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7***** house ehh? Any explanation for that or are you just grabbing some of your own ***** and winging it.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7...except that the PSP is probably the most capable handheld out there. Well, as long as you're not into PSP-specific games, that is ;)
- GoldYoshi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I would get a psp just for emulating N64, PSX, SNES, and NES games. A modded DS can also play snes and nes, but the PSP is more powerful, and can emulate even N64 perfectly in most games. (Even mario kart.)
- scubasteve11, on 10/10/2007, -13/+5From the looks of it, it has potential to be really cool.
- zongamin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13from the looks of it, it has the potential to be a load of expensive ***** you mean?
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1i agree id go for the much cheaper iPhone
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1do not feed the troll
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3You must wear cargo pants... when I look at this I see a device a least four times thicker than it should be.
- crzdmn, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2How so??? I'm still not sure what makes this thing special? Is it going to play PSP games???? If so why the hell would sony license the software to them istnead of just adding a the hardware to the psp.
I don't know it's dumb. Society needs to regress anyway, to many people live by their cell phone these days. I recently got rid of mine and suddenly i have some me time again.
There is that and where i live statistically 2 out of every 3 people who drive by you will be talking on a cellphone, it's great, also 2/5ths the cars on the road are SUV's where i live. So cell + big car = dumbass who can't see and hits things.
- zongamin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13from the looks of it, it has the potential to be a load of expensive ***** you mean?
- sexualaj, on 10/10/2007, -12/+42why is every consumer company now in plans to release a phone.
Err.- Taiken, on 10/10/2007, -4/+40Sony has been making phones for years now.
- jeriqo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Yep, and I bet it's gonna be a regular sony-ericsson phone with a playstation sticker on it.
- jtp51, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1My thoughts exactly, sometimes I want a gadget in hand, but I don't want a phone call while using it.
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6flight mode?
- Nicksname1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Genius!
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6flight mode?

- Taiken, on 10/10/2007, -4/+40Sony has been making phones for years now.
- 10goto10, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5What's it gonna be called? PhoneStation? PlayPhone? psPhone?

- nehalp100, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2lol
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -4/+58You ***** idiots. He was joking! He said that it was going to be ready for Christmas and then laughed and said he didn't know WHICH Christmas. The whole part where he's laughing and joking around is just ignored by Gizmodo here... but it was all just a joke.
- Fizox99, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I agree...did anyone look at those pictures? They were made in a MS Paint-Esq program....definitely a joke.
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You don't spend much time looking at patents, do you? I'm surprised, with all the frenzy over them on the intarweb.
- Moskie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"He also added that it might not be this Christmas, which probably pissed whoever he was talking to off to no end."
"It doesn't even need games other than the mobile ones that already exist for their cellphones, which run just fine on SE's higher-end hardware."
I can't take those two lines serioiusly. This has to be satire. Or an April Fools style prank... If it is, good job! It's nigh impossible to do an April Fools prank these days, the only way to do it is on a random day and not the 1st of April. - uptown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Bu.... bu ... but it said CONFIRMED!?!
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Did anyone else look at the "CONFIRMED" in the title and think "yeah right, I'll be the judge of that", browse the page and think "yep, *****".
The drawings look familiar though. Probably one of Sony's patents. But just because it's a patent doesnt mean anything. How about Sony make a PSP2 simply by beefing up the processor/graphics chips and adding a touch screen. Might be able to take on the DS Lite then. People like touchscreens and other interesting ways of interacting with a game machine - just look how well the DS Lite and Wii are doing. I think someone needs to visit Sony HQ and give them a kick up the ass.- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"People like touchscreens and other interesting ways of interacting with a game machine - just look how well the DS Lite and Wii are doing."
Those are exactly the reasons I want to stay far away from the DS Lite and Wii. I'm a gamer. I can push buttons just fine without dumbing it down.
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"People like touchscreens and other interesting ways of interacting with a game machine - just look how well the DS Lite and Wii are doing."
- Fizox99, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I agree...did anyone look at those pictures? They were made in a MS Paint-Esq program....definitely a joke.
- yasirwisdom, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2i dont but when looking at it words just hit my mind...
accelerometer, rumble feature, spiderman font.... - PatrickA, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Nothing is confirmed until the official press release is issued. The same applies to the gPhone.
- eboy, on 10/10/2007, -15/+17ROOT KIT in your ear
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2totally different division, that the music division and sony has MANY MANY divisions.
It's ignorant people like you that make people lose hope in humanity
- windohs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2totally different division, that the music division and sony has MANY MANY divisions.
- natefisher, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7Sony needs to focus on getting good games out for the PS3 not on phones.
- carnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11sony and sony ericsson are pretty much 2 different companies, the ps3 game development is so completely unrelated to the phone development its safe to say that
- potp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3yhea the same division that creates the games also makes mobile phone apparently????
Get your head out of your ass. they have different teams who work on independent products. this is just band expansion, using the halo effect of one product name and expanding it in a new catgory. they did it successfully with the walkmen and cybershot series phones.
- jaymulder, on 10/10/2007, -12/+13So Sony lost the battle to Nintendo and now is going to try to compete with Apple? That is just stupid.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6All of this is untrue. Sony's next step is to compete with GM with the PSPAuto. Now you can drive, play video games, watch Bluray movies, and chew gum all at the same time (gum is an extra cost feature).
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm here to drive-play-games-watch-movies and chew gum. And I'm all outta gum. So thanks for hooking me up Sony!
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the "They LIVE!" reference. Good job! :)
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm here to drive-play-games-watch-movies and chew gum. And I'm all outta gum. So thanks for hooking me up Sony!
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I didn't know apple made a gaming phone...
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Apple with their < 1% market share. Couldn't you choose someone else like Nokia?
- bignerd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0you're an idiot!
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6All of this is untrue. Sony's next step is to compete with GM with the PSPAuto. Now you can drive, play video games, watch Bluray movies, and chew gum all at the same time (gum is an extra cost feature).
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32I won't buy any kind of gaming phone unless it's shaped like a taco. Are you listening Sony?
- crzdmn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4And it must be edible, or have cheap replaceable edible parts :) Then sony can market it as a survival tool, you have communicatios, entertainment, AND FOOD!!!!! Can it purify urine too?
- frepnog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0um i think that was a dig at the N-Gage....
- crzdmn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4And it must be edible, or have cheap replaceable edible parts :) Then sony can market it as a survival tool, you have communicatios, entertainment, AND FOOD!!!!! Can it purify urine too?
- MarkTaiwan, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3wtf? every company is making its phone?! what's next? MicroPhone?
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Moron, Sony Ericsson has been making phones for years.
- crzdmn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Lol, no ***** doesn't enter other markets like that. They'll just buy a phone company and give it a new name like "Microsoft Is Listening". Go buy your MILPhone
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It will be called the MILFone and have all the phone numbers of hot horny housewives in your area already programmed in.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sold!
- adooga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nah, it'll be called "Microsoft Power Conversation Maker (portable)"
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It will be called the MILFone and have all the phone numbers of hot horny housewives in your area already programmed in.
- Niz1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If Microsoft wanted to enter they could have done it ages ago they do have own OS for one.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2SONY really doesn't know how to quit, do they?
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1No, the current execs at Sony dont know how to quit. In a short amount of time they've screwed up alot and gained many cheesed off customers. They just need new execs that have a clue.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why would they quit two businesses in which they've been quite successful?
- naffets, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Buried. It's not confirmed for christmas at all, taken out of context.
- Toinsane2b, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0hmmm... The Suits at sony finally lost their minds!!
- devin_mm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2The title should have read: "BREAKING The Playstation Phone Running Goobuntu: CONFIRMED"
I would have used all caps but that just hurts my mind picturing it. - Samji, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Why are the options to suspend a game to take a call, both Yes in that patent diagram?
- crazyman, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Don't they ever learn?
- ZeroMP, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Because that worked so well with the NGage! I guess maybe if the make it a bit more functional and don't shape it like a taco they might be okay. The only thing is that people switch phones frequently. How long can that phone possibly be the hot item? Probably not long enough to get a respectable library of games - but I suppose Sony never was too worried about that w/ the PSP either..
- Shawn4168, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2In related news, Sony announced the creation of a new wireless phone network. True to Sony's business practices, the network will only work with Sony-branded phones, and Sony-branded phones will now only work on Sony's network.
- TeleKawaru, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2The screenshots of the game (well, the 'boss' anyways) looks like something straight out of Gradius.
- ddaug4uf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2the scenario should probably play out like this....
Sony phone available starting the weekend after thanksgiving.
Moms, dads and everyone rushes out to buy there kid the latest and greatest new cell phone...
By Christmas, once the MySpace phone, or MTVphone comes out, the kid has a $400 device they can call 9-1-1 on - masterdbugger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0where's the numbers?
- Harrison88, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2A phone... with no keypad? Is it touch screen?
- MaynardJK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It reads your mind.
- leethemanpowell, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3sony caught on to the apple formula, release one part of a functional brand, then slowly add on to it...
eventually these phones will be taking blu-ray disks..
and cost $600...- GhostFreeman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ridge Racer not included.
- Harrison88, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1So it'll cost the same as an iPhone but have a blu-ray player and play games? Where's the downside?
- sourc3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Am I the only one who thinks it looks like an ugly brick? This isn't the 90's anymore... For all the iPhone's flaws, at least it LOOKS dead sexy.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The picture is an old concept drawing of... something. Probably not what the PlayStation phone would look like.
- flarn2006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well it's inevitable for a PSP to turn into one, so quit your yapping!
- rkuchiki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I love the concept image...
"Incoming call received. Would you like to suspend game to answer call?"
"YES (1)" "YES (2)"- flarn2006, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5NO (0)
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Playstation fanboys splooge - CONFIRMED just don't ask me how....
- Salanmon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Now if they just called it the SONY Phone then the idea wouldn't have to cross our tainted mind cause by the PS3
- magiclava, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Look everyone its Ridge Racer on my phone!........
RIDGE RACER!...........- frepnog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0i believe it goes RRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDGEEEEEEEEEE RRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- flarn2006, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Phone: You are downloading Ridge Racer...
You: Oh boy! I can download games! *scrolls down*
Phone: ...for $19.99. [YES (1)] [YES (2)]

- pezholio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I'm sure it'll be a huge success, just like the Nokia N-Gage, huh huh huh.
- RiverBelow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Gizmodo has always been a failure at rumours anyways.
- Aero1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1they should start thinking about coming out with games before anything else
- Boomh4u3r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1looks kinda..big?
- flarn2006, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It's PSP HUEG!!!
- dethsesh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3something with CONFIRMED in the title makes it to the front page that isnt actually confirmed, what a surprise
- nobogeys217, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1before you release another short-term fad system, make it a good one.
- slapded, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4SWEET! THE N-GAGE ROCKED!
HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH ROTFLOLFOFLF - Felix57, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1i thought this was already confirmed a month ago plus i saw it a magazine 3 days ago i didn't send it cause it thought it wasn't news although this product disappoints me they should of held out and gave psp 2 phone functionality even if it meant a delay.. enough with raping the consumer multiple times
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3oh god it's CONFIRMED!!
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, depending on how they implement gaming, this could make for an excellent phone.
- ddaug4uf, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0it looks like a multimeter with a swivel LCD.
Now that is sexy...NOT - dheaddy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Yay more features for the PSP, the lack of games is irrelevant right? Just keeping packing in more features and peripherals and I might forget!
- ddaug4uf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0But dude, you will get Trial Version Tetris!!!!
- neko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It should be just a small accessory for the PSP which includes a slim bluetooth headset.
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6PlayStation Phone.
PS...P? - Kylem87, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Buried as innacurate.
He said " "it's obviously something that we're looking at but right now I can't really comment. Before Christmas, certainly... but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!" - jizzxcore, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1This can compete with the new Nintendo phone that only plays games.
- frepnog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Not confirmed, not coming out... ever.
