The Top 25 Blogs: Time.com's First Annual Blog Index
time.com — From millions of blogs about nothing, we've selected the 25 best about something —from politics and global affairs to shopping and sports. And, yes, we've got a few about nothing, too.

- VeniceCA, on 04/08/2008, -6/+31Is there such a thing as first annual?
- mvanhorn, on 04/08/2008, -0/+9I think when you're TIME you can make statements like that
- aflusche, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6Thank you for pointing this out!
- thelastcivilian, on 04/08/2008, -2/+16Why not? If they plan to do it in subsequent years...
- bracketdash, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1But Planning is not a major at THIS University...
- HonoredMule, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1What, no liberal arts faculty?
- bracketdash, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1But Planning is not a major at THIS University...
- tim710, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2First Birthdays are almost always a sure thing.
- GrantMVP, on 04/08/2008, -4/+9Techcrunch is my personal favorite.
- theAlice, on 04/08/2008, -2/+3Sorry, but I'm not interested in glorified paid reviews.
- jemka, on 04/08/2008, -2/+3Sorry, but I'm not interested in your interest in glorified paid reviews.
- samard2002, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2TechCrunch's layout is literally 40% ad space. It always takes me a few seconds to figure out where the content is.
- theAlice, on 04/08/2008, -2/+3Sorry, but I'm not interested in glorified paid reviews.
- agsinger, on 04/08/2008, -1/+35Time hates slashdot -
"Reading Slashdot these days is like visiting the IT guy at work. He's infuriatingly smug and cares passionately about stuff you don't care about, and views your lack of interest as further confirmation of his intellectual superiority. Enjoy."- dotlizard, on 04/08/2008, -0/+45well, they may indeed hate Slashdot, however, their description is totally 100% spot on.
- chemdiva, on 04/08/2008, -1/+15Clearly TIme doesn't understand that only reason you ever go talk to the IT guy at work so that you can have a conversation with someone who actually gets what you're talking about....
- aaaleman, on 04/08/2008, -0/+3Time feels they're talking to Nick Burns whenever they visit Slashdot.
- devin_mm, on 04/08/2008, -1/+6The news to me was that Slashdot is considered a blog, I always thought it was a news aggregator.
- lalalalamppost, on 04/08/2008, -0/+10Watch it! That sort of accuracy about technology is EXACTLY what makes the "blog experts" at Time label a person as "infuriatingly smug."
The real question people need to be asking these days: Why the ***** should I care about Time.com?
- lalalalamppost, on 04/08/2008, -0/+10Watch it! That sort of accuracy about technology is EXACTLY what makes the "blog experts" at Time label a person as "infuriatingly smug."
- cubicledrone, on 04/08/2008, -3/+3American society hates people who care about anything except celebrity gossip and money.
- slamtv7, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2They also hate Ars Technica
"A perennially top-rated blog that bills itself as covering "the art of technology." Verdict: too much technology. Hardly any art. And lose the fruity name."- jfp51, on 04/08/2008, -1/+5Lol, as if Time magazine is still relevant anymore. Hey, Time, Ars and Slashdot aren't blogs!
- Scaryclouds, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1I thought that was ***** and instantly gave arstechnia a 10. It may not be a 10, but ars is FAR FAR from overrate.
- RyeBrye, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2The audience of Times obviously doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground.
Ars is awesome. Slashdot is OK - but I would definitely not put those two in the category of "overhyped" blogs.
Lets put it this way: This was the first time I've ever been to Time.com in over a year or two...
- mikkee07, on 04/08/2008, -7/+2Some are in all such lists =)
- ChrisKieff, on 04/08/2008, -9/+1Dosh Dosh is best!
- Feydakyn, on 04/08/2008, -0/+8Interesting list even if it doesn't seem to make much sense
- brotherfranciz, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1I agree, I don't understand how anyone can even rate blogs, different people have different interests.
Blog is short for weblog - in other words, it's a bit like a diary except online and public. So it seems a bit redundant to rate such a thing...
- brotherfranciz, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1I agree, I don't understand how anyone can even rate blogs, different people have different interests.
- smashingred, on 04/08/2008, -8/+1Yeoh, doshdosh!
- thelastcivilian, on 04/08/2008, -0/+31"Where's my personal blog? I have like 3 readers! I should be at least 24th on that list." - 99% of bloggers.
- hello2usir, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2The oversaturation of blogs these days almost makes me long for the days when people expressed themselves with Angelfire and ***** pages.
Almost. - gothicform, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2We suffer from the problem that most bloggers think they can do it because anyone can. We end up with an endless circle-jerk of noise about a subject, any subject, as an original post on an authorative blog is repeated 5000 times ad nauseum. They don't understand that unless you are a brilliant writer able to do commentary and analysis that entertains the masses, people aren't reading and don't care. The only way you can get around that is by real journalism which few blogs do preferring opinion pieces. The end result is we have 99 billion piece of ***** and perhaps 1,000 worth reading in the entire planet.
- hello2usir, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2The oversaturation of blogs these days almost makes me long for the days when people expressed themselves with Angelfire and ***** pages.
- Imeson, on 04/08/2008, -4/+5Lifehacker = awesome
- pleeker, on 04/08/2008, -3/+8As long as Consumerist is on the list, I'm cool with it. :-)
- serif69, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1They had to put Consumerist on there, or Best Buy was gonna call the cops on them.
- semcents, on 04/08/2008, -9/+2Nice list I am going to check them out,,,,,,Did not see DOSH DOSH on there......hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
- freedomwv, on 04/08/2008, -6/+1I wonder why newsvine is not up there. I use newsvine and I love it. Although this list does give me the chance to check out a whole mess of blog sites.
I give this one a dig just for MakiMaki because she is so cool!- dotlizard, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5she's a he. just for future reference :)
- SpikeLee, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Probably because its not a blog.
- tf5bassist, on 04/08/2008, -7/+1yay Dosh Dosh!
- mphung, on 04/08/2008, -2/+3I clicked and clicked and clicked (did I mention how much I hate when old-skool publishers split things up over a zillion pages?!) and clicked and didn't find doshdosh anywhere. What gives? :)
- asnider, on 04/08/2008, -4/+13"While the typical blog is written by one person wearing sweatpants reclaimed from the hamper..."
Oh, come on! Can we stop with these stupid stereotypes already? Blogs are no longer just written by sweaty fatasses with nothing better to do. I'm pretty sure that sentence NEVER described the typical blogger, and it certainly doesn't describe the average blogger in 2008.- frooo, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5Bloggers wear pants? Thats where I'm going wrong.... must not write while pantsless.
- bamafun, on 04/08/2008, -4/+1lol u r crazy fun
- asnider, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Pants are optional. And, really, no pants would be better than dirty sweat pants, I think.
- tattertech, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2That's true, Scoble doesn't apparently bother with clothes...
- chroko, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3Hey, it just reenforces the idea that the typical newspaper article is written by an out-of-touch moron with no real understanding - or experience - with the subject they're writing about.
Their audience is the lowest common denominator, readers who have problems understanding large words. They generalize and simplify to the point of stupidity. You shouldn't expect reporters to be able to do anything except make ***** up.
I thought this line in the article was funny:
"Why are so many blogs attached to mainstream newspapers so freakin' lame?"
Indeed, Time Magazine. Why *are* your online articles so lame? - cubicledrone, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Well, see, the whole thing about geeks being losers is really the only thing keeping society going at the moment. As long as the "winners" can lie to themselves about being "superior" to others they won't collapse weeping because they loaded up half a million in credit card debt trying to impress their girlfriend's barbeque clique. For them, going through life as dumb as a fencepost is truly its own reward. They are all fine, fine people.
- zongamin, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Its a joke, loser.
- frooo, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5Bloggers wear pants? Thats where I'm going wrong.... must not write while pantsless.
- tripple-breve, on 04/08/2008, -5/+2Significant for blogs that Time is even doing this. This will be the first time some people will stop and think about what a blog is.
- anderzole, on 04/08/2008, -4/+2247 and not fp?!
- UnterDenLinden, on 04/08/2008, -7/+2I gave Huffington Post a 1. I feel empowered.
- jizzlies, on 04/08/2008, -3/+2My vote goes to http://www.bofads.com - under the 'about nothing' category.
- LnVA, on 04/08/2008, -3/+3Ok...remember that old teacher in school who wanted to be thought of as "young" & "hip" so they hung out with the "cool" kids? Yeah. I think Time is trying to get "in" with the cool "blogosphere." Although, they missed a few cool kids...winks to Maki & Dosh Dosh.
- sjohnson0881, on 04/08/2008, -6/+1this story has over 250 diggs..how is it not popular yet?
- CosmoIaccavazi, on 04/08/2008, -2/+9That list is truly *****
- bossm4n, on 04/08/2008, -3/+30They list Ars Technica one of the 5 most overrated, yet Huffington and Daily Kos make the top 20. WTF?
- Anth, on 04/08/2008, -1/+11I agree completely. I get most of my Tech news at Ars, and I consider them to be one of the most level headed and intelligent tech websites out there. How they can be "overrated" is beyond me.
- jfp51, on 04/08/2008, -0/+5And it isn't a blog to boot!
- Anth, on 04/08/2008, -1/+11I agree completely. I get most of my Tech news at Ars, and I consider them to be one of the most level headed and intelligent tech websites out there. How they can be "overrated" is beyond me.
- hollywoodphony, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3My blog's not even on there. What kind of list is this? None of these people know anyone famous.
- WSUcougars, on 04/08/2008, -1/+7What's up with the "Buzz this on Yahoo" Button? I mean seriously... Who cares about Yahoo Buzz?
- smellydog, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2325 sites. 25 separate pages. sigh.
- lolnix, on 04/08/2008, -2/+5Here's a condensed version, if you don't want to wade through all the pages. http://digg.com/tech_news/Time_com_s_Top_25_Blogs_ ...
- infrontCreative, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0I thought Mashable might make the list... I guess my tastes are different.
- dan222555, on 04/08/2008, -4/+3Stopped reading when I saw The Huffington Post mentioned. There's nothing commendable about a blog full of hate and propaganda.
- cyberpear, on 04/08/2008, -2/+2absolutely agreed -- I did the same thing.
- minox, on 04/08/2008, -2/+2So true. I don't know why they'd think someone would care about the political views of Brian from "Wings."
- dan222555, on 04/08/2008, -3/+1Bashing the Huffington Post and having two Diggers agree with me....this is blowing my mind.
- mparker7410, on 04/08/2008, -2/+1I can NOT believe Zen Habits DIDN'T make this list?! They included quite a few that seem to be less popular and far less useful than Zen Habits. Shame.
- StevesJobs, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2Engadget FTW!
- indorock, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2no, I cannot believe they passed over Gizmodo and instead selected that Giz wannabe engadget. Their writers try soooo hard to be witty a la Jason Chen but fail consistently.
- axis, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3I found the article link at the bottom of the page about some men's low sexual drive more interesting than this. I haven't visited 20 of the sites on that list, so I think the list is kinda lame...
- TechnologyFreak, on 04/08/2008, -1/+0Digg Dosent Make the list
- davidhildreth, on 04/08/2008, -1/+2It's not a blog.
- sohailstyle, on 04/08/2008, -1/+3Someone At TIME Magazine Has a Woody For Ace of Spades
http://firedoglake.com/2008/04/07/someone-at-time- ...- lobofanina, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Poor firedoglake got its feelings hurt.
- hrm114, on 04/08/2008, -3/+1this is so true about ars technica
- katienne, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Dooce is missing too...
- indorock, on 04/08/2008, -0/+16http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,2 ...
"By most estimates, this is the 10th most popular blog on the planet: a site that lets users upload pictures of cats and affix funny captions to them written in a made-up language. Further evidence of the decline of Western civilization."
May ceiling cat have mercy on your soul, Time.- indorock, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Ugh. link broke. I am of course referring to icanhascheezburger on the overrated list.
http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,2 ... - bluemist, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I'm in ur magazeen, wastin ur TIME.
I see too many furries on Digg lately also, what gives? - cubicledrone, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Civilization is in decline because real journalism has been absent for decades. This article is just the latest example.
- indorock, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Ugh. link broke. I am of course referring to icanhascheezburger on the overrated list.
- catachip, on 04/08/2008, -3/+3Who the hell calls the Huffington Post the "HuffPo"? I've never even heard of that...
STOP SHORTENING WORDS!
Case in point: Washington Mutual ---> WaMu
What planning session came out with that gem and thought it was a good idea? Hmm, lets take the name of a moderately successful banking and investment corporation and... turn it into something a 2 year old says when their diaper is full. Bravo.- serif69, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2I do. In fact, it would appear that most commenters on Digg do.
- VSack, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1So wait.
You all are digging a list by the mainstream media passing judgement on that which is supposed to usurp them?
BURY THIS LIST AS INACCURATE!- catachip, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Actually, if you had read the article, you'd see that their ranking is based on reader submission and ranking. You can go there now and rate them as you please. So, cool your jets there VSack.
- VSack, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1"From millions of blogs about nothing, we've selected the 25 best about something —from politics and global affairs to shopping and sports. And, yes, we've got a few about nothing, too."
That, coupled with the denoting of several "overrated" blogs indicates clearly that they, in fact, are trying to tell you which ones they think are worth something.
Shenanigans.
- VSack, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1"From millions of blogs about nothing, we've selected the 25 best about something —from politics and global affairs to shopping and sports. And, yes, we've got a few about nothing, too."

- charlesray, on 04/08/2008, -0/+11Slashdot isn't a blog, and neither is Ars Technica. Both of them existed far before the term "blog" was in (wide) use. This is without a doubt one of the most terrible "we're a traditional media source and would like to capitalize on the interwebs" articles I've ever read.
- davidhildreth, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6The sort of person who would consider them "blogs" probably wouldn't read them anyway.
Maybe that's why TIME is shoveling on the hate.
- davidhildreth, on 04/08/2008, -0/+6The sort of person who would consider them "blogs" probably wouldn't read them anyway.
- nixfu, on 04/08/2008, -4/+4Quite possibly one of the worst lists ever.
Correction:
"Top 25 Blogs for clueless techno-newbie liberal left wingers." - jwhitman89, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1At least indexed is getting some publicity out of all this.
- life38, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Try Nonprofit Supporter: If you want humor, try the cartoons. If you want a fresh look at life see what the nine year old has to say. If you are looking for Generation O's opinions check out EMO. This free site has lots of business advice that both nonprofits and for profits can use to build an effective, efficient and successful organization.
http://mynonprofitwebsite.com/blog/ - debuffplx, on 04/08/2008, -0/+127 pages for a top 25 list of 24 worthless blogs. ***** you, internet.
- hooqy, on 04/08/2008, -0/+0Techcrunch is my favour
- agentlame, on 04/08/2008, -0/+2Screw Times. Ars is a great site. I've never really considered it a "blog" though.
- psprules7, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Autoblog should be on the list
- novemberdream07, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1(even though i love it) i don't really think of postsecret as a blog but more an art project. also where's perez? apparently the people at time are not wooed by the ms paint photos or britney's vajayjay.
- tambird, on 04/08/2008, -1/+1Looks like a good list, BUT I am not waiting to load 25 F)(*king pages to read them. Come on. Of course one page is too much to ask and not reasonable but hmmm...5 divides into 25 quite nicely.
- Yage2006, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1According to who exactly people who read time ?
Sounds like another bs laundry list.
How much cleaner the internet would be without these. -
