To Shout or Not to Shout: The Digg Dilemma
brentcsutoras.com — Let ’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of using the Shout feature and some tips to survive the experience.
- 104 diggs
- digg it
- mrbubbleboy, on 11/04/2007, -0/+11I agree with what most of the people quoted said. I like it as a way to meet people and grow my friends network, but the abuse of spam being shouted is out of control. I think more aggrssive shout spam burying practices should help curb the problem.
- mrbubbleboy, on 11/06/2007, -0/+16In addtion, I'm trying to build an honest network of friends where I truly like their submissions (and they like mine) and I want to digg them on my own each day. The shout feature as it is being used seems to encourage friends networks based on blatent self promotion and nothing more.
- MikeonTV, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Its only a matter of time before someone writes a script that will allow you to use an account to send massive multiple shouts about your submissions to a criteria of users. It may get you banned but the damage will already be done.
- eastcoast, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2Good blog. Taught me a lot!
- michaelnew20, on 11/04/2007, -0/+10I personally have turned off the shout feature. The only shouts I received were pathetic attempts for me to digg their submission. I had no use for it any longer. In theory, the concept is great...but people are abusing the system too much!
- Burento, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I tried turning mine off but i still sent one or two. Since i want to be able to send them i decided it is only fair, thanks to a buddy kicking me in the ass, to turn them back on. Of course i think my last indicator said i had about 108 shouts... i still don't read them. :(
- MikeonTV, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3Your thinking too much.

- whatamaroon, on 11/02/2007, -1/+5Like all things, its a good feature that can be abused.
- sbader, on 11/04/2007, -0/+12The new system is incredibly frustrating, it seems harder to get people to digg your stuff without spamming, and i've been befriended by over a hundred people since the new digg launched and i have no idea why because they are obviously not reeading the things i submit. And with all the new adds i'm not adding anyone new because it takes forever to figure out if your interests are the same. I can't go through what they've dugged and see if we have dugg the same things unless i click or manage to remember what i've dugg. I want a feature for the fans list that will show me the stories that we have in common.
- Burento, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8Digg: Is it possible to be allowed to digg or bury Shouts? Then we can set them to only show with a certain digg count like comments.
Maybe if people get enough negative points from Shouting then they lose the feature? - vinblackham, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3I haven't had that great of a success with it so I do it rarely, but I'll give some digg love to any of my buddy's that shouts...no big deal to me.
- lisapham, on 11/06/2007, -0/+4I just avoid all the drama all together and completely turn it off. I think it's a pointless feature anyways.
- Burento, on 11/02/2007, -1/+2And Buried.. Serves us right for not putting Ron Paul in the title. I think Ron Paul = can't be buried ;)
- sbader, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Damnit!
- SilentJay74, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3I shout to a few people every now and then. You need to watch who you send the story to. I don't wanna shout spam people unless they are doing it to me. If I really think it is a story they like I shout it to them. Other wise I shout spam the people who shout spam me.
- Burento, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2So since it is Buried can we go ahead and shout it to everyone?
- webcure, on 11/02/2007, -1/+4Everybody's talkin' bout digging,
digging and shouting, shouting and digging,
shouted me I'll bury him,
buried me I'll bury him,
group shout and private shout,
diggers on their way out,
all because of digger shouts,
Everybody fights about
Spamming on the digger shouts,
newbies on the front page,
veteran diggers all enraged,
NEWBIES ON THE FRONT PAGE?
NEWBIES ON THE FRONT PAGE?
NEWBIES ON THE FRONT PAGE?
(together everyone!)
All we are saying,
is
Give Digg a Chance
All I am saying,
is
Give Digg a Chance - kbedell, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1How is this buried? Did anyone actually *READ* it? It's extremely well written and adds value.
- SeaMowse, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I get pissed off by all the shouts I get from friends pimping their stories. I'm not going to personally hold it against them, but damn... I sure hope their digging my stuff! I do have one friend who pimps my stuff occasionally (not at my request!). And I only let my friends send shouts to me. It's still annoying as hell to get bombarded with shouts pimping stories - especially when I would probably be digging them anyways.
- acidbathfan, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1It never hurts to help new users along the way because a lot of people make mistakes and really don't know any better. If you see someone making a sincere and honest effort send them a message on what their doing wrong and how they could do it better without being annoying. If you see a honest to god dick then just block them.
I myself allow shouts because I find it does actually provide some interesting material at times and it doesn't take but a few seconds to scan the headlines and help me find something that actually catches my eye that I might enjoy reading. To me Digg is like a big ass RSS feed where I can find interesting stuff to read, not a place to get popular. It's my modern newspaper I guess you could say.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
