Vista Wallpapers include several from Flickr members
blog.flickr.com — One good reason to consider an upgrade to Vista, Microsoft's just-released upgrade to Windows: the default set of desktop wallpapers it ships with include several from Flickr members. Long Zheng has a blog post with some examples, and Microsoft's Raymond Chen has more details.

Honestly to me, there will never be a good reason. It's all eye candy and a resource hog.
Digg me down all you want.- hbweb500, on 10/12/2007, -7/+243Im sure there are some good reasons to upgrade, but wallpaper? Who the hell upgrades because of wallpaper?
- primehifi, on 11/04/2007, -27/+112I upgraded because of the mouse pointers.

Martha Stewart? Gays? - skoles, on 11/04/2007, -13/+32OSX Tiger comes with B&W versions of some photos found on interfacelift.com
I've wondered if they compensate the artists. Imagine just getting 2¢ of every OS sold. - Prysorra, on 11/04/2007, -8/+61Everyone Read the Flickr Page.
The guy was HIRED to take the photos. HIRED.
THEN came flickr. Please keep this in mind. - homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18Truthfully, desktop wallpapers from flickr does not make me want Vista any more...

- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -16/+79I find it amusing that Microsoft can't get a break no matter what they do.
Microsoft wants to include web authoring tools into Windows -- nope, that's a monopoly. Interestingly enough, Apple can do it.
Microsoft doesn't want to make their programs for other operating systems (and why should they have to? It's THEIR software.) -- nope, that's a monopoly. You can get Office for a Mac; heck, you can get IE on a Mac, but can you get Safari for Windows?
Apple makes an OS that's very pretty and has a bunch of neat effects. So Microsoft makes an OS that's pretty and has a bunch of neat effects -- everyone hates Microsoft for making an OS with eye candy and complains because they can't run it with 128MB of RAM (the very LEAST amount of RAM that you can even buy a Mac with is 512MB).
I'm not saying Microsoft is a saint, nor am I saying that Apple is evil. I'm just sick of the god damn hypocrites. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30@IEatEmoKids
I'll digg you down because you're completely wrong.

@Prysorra
You're wrong, it was indeed, the other way around. From Long Zheng's original blog post:
"# There are a handful from amateur Flickr photographers (which are Jenny’s favorites).
* Not only did Jenny ask the Flickr photographers if they could license their images, she also sent them on a commissioned photoshoot. You can find some here and here."
She (Jenny Lam, responsible for the Ribbon among other things) found them on Flickr FIRST, then commissioned them for a photoshoot. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20"I find it amusing that Microsoft can't get a break no matter what they do."
It's pretty sad.
These guys have such a total hate for Microsoft, that even a thread about the wallpaper is good enough for them to launch into a tirade about how they will never use Vista.
As if anyone cares?
But wait until a story about OSXs wallpaper gets to the front page, and watch these same people do a total 180. - Hatefull, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I dugg you down, not because of what you said, but because of your name. Way to go after the tough targets.
- childprey, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2@masamunecyrus
Yea but you'd be hardpressed to run Vista at any level of attractiveness with the 512 macs start at
Oh and there was that little thing where OS X Tiger will run decently on 256 and still be visually comparable with vista...
[and yes, we know you cant buy that any more. But macs with 256 still exist] - naio21, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I upgraded because I want it bigger.
- dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Yeah, LOL, that is retarded. I can't believe they're suggesting you upgrade your OS so that you can get some mostly freely available wallpaper images. It seems you can download large size images from Flickr just by changing the letter at the end to o, as in: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/40/97403945_54c179d8e8_o.jpg

Damn right. That really struck me as an odd line... "One good reason to upgrade..." HA! - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3This is one of the lamest stories I have ever seen hit the front page of Digg. What the hell is the matter with you people?
Go have a drink, listen to some Rammstein, then come back and read this story. Then you'll understand how lame it is.
Did Bill Gates pay you to plant this story, or are you just a pathetic uncompensated fanboy?
Don't post another story like this, because if you do, I will come to your house and piss all over your Vista PC until it melts. Then you will have nothing to put these wallpapers on unless you print them out and put them on... yes YOUR WALL!
***** Vista. ***** Microsoft. ***** wallpapers. ***** Rammstein. And ***** fanboys.
If you Digg this down, you are gay. Unless you really are gay, then I hope you get slapped unconscious by huge, floppy lesbian titties.
Is that a good note to end on? And you thought this was going to be some lame story about Vista wallpapers, instead you get floppy lesbian titties! Isn't Digg great?

"Microsoft wants to include web authoring tools into Windows -- nope, that's a monopoly. Interestingly enough, Apple can do it."
iWeb is part of iLife and iLife is a separate product. Just like Microsoft's Expression Suite is a separate product.
"You can get Office for a Mac; heck, you can get IE on a Mac, but can you get Safari for Windows?"
The development of IE for Mac has been cancelled long ago (just like Windows Media Player for Mac and recently Virtual PC for Mac). OTOH WebKit (the basis for Safari) is open source and also compiles on Windows, and Linux/Unix, and Symbian,....
Apple releases new versions of FileMaker for Windows on a regular basis. QuickTime runs on Windows, iTunes runs on Windows, and Bonjour also runs on Windows.
- kinghondorp, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7i agree; except for dx10. That will take a while to realize its potential though.
- KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52The photos are beautiful for sure, but to say this is a reason to upgrade to Vista is the most ridiculous thing I've heard today.
I can go to flickr and download the wallpapers myself and use them if I want to in my current OS.
Dugg only because the photos are awesome.- waynechng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Agree with you 100% but will digg down because the proposition is just plain dumb!
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8haha. so true. i already have a folder on my XP with all the Vista wallpapers from the Release Canidates.
- KMye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away? Or am I wrong in reading Flickr's post as tongue-in-cheek?
- blake10, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2i don't normally digg wallpaper stories submitted to digg, but it came with a short entry that explained the significance of it...pretty cool! oh right...and some beautiful pics, too!
- marcushe, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1So did they steal these images from user's accounts? I don't get it.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No, the images were bought from the users. I believe the article is just pointing this out.
- bswopes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6FTFA, "Not only did Jenny ask the Flickr photographers if they could license their images, she also sent them on a commissioned photoshoot."

- Everen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1davdav,
Did this bring to mind in anyone else the "secret" location in the desert where Atari buried thousands of "E.T." 2600 carts? - nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me, or do the full quality versions of these look like crap? There is some sort of noise through the whole image, some have horrible fringing on edges of the rocks and water lines. It looks like these were taken with a low-quality lens and with a high ISO and then photoshopped to hell. If you know what to look for, there are quite a few tells, these images were edited way too much, they don't even look good anymore.
- infimprob, on 10/12/2007, -19/+71. Right click
- gweezil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No, no. The reason to upgrade has nothing to do with encryption or security or any of that jazz. It's to get the nifty little Windows pearl that replaced the Start menu. It's just so darn cutsie!!
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Well, the new start menu is jam-packed full of usability enhancements, instant searching, and many ot----
Oh. That was sarcasm....

- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Love the pics, but definitely not a real reason to upgrade to Vista just yet.
- shotgunefx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Upgrade for wallpapers, um, buried for that right there.
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"when someone wants to create a visual style that looks like one of their's, they sue?"
I was agreeing with that part.
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"when someone wants to create a visual style that looks like one of their's, they sue?"
- evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2so let me get this straight, they take wallpaper from users that offer it for free. then when someone wants to create a visual style that looks like one of their's, they sue?
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2M$ at work.
- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Clearly no one here has read the article. Why do we even bother having articles?
- hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"One good reason to consider an upgrade to Vista, Microsoft's just-released upgrade to Windows: the default set of desktop wallpapers it ships with include several from Flickr members. Long Zheng has a blog post with some examples, and Microsoft's Raymond Chen has more details.
Reportedly, Microsoft experience designer Jenny Lam considered around 10,000 images, combing traditional sources and commissioning a few photoshoots, but is happiest with the ones that came from Flickr members, like these from Hamad Darwish AKA [ HD ]"
OK....there's the whole article. What exactly did we miss? - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"they take wallpaper from users that offer it for free"
RTFA. They paid.
http://blog.flickr.com/flickrblog/2007/01/a_key_benefit_o.html
"Creative Director Jenny Lam expanded the search to Flickr and contacted people who took really interesting pictures, asking them, "So, how would you like one of your photos included among the default wallpapers in Windows Vista?" The Flickr artists were excited to be a part of Windows Vista (one of them by an astonishing coincidence happened to be a beta tester), and after the lawyers had their say—because nothing is complete without lawyers getting involved—Microsoft sent the photographers on a commissioned photo shoot" - hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I was responding to this part.
"then when someone wants to create a visual style that looks like one of their's, they sue?"
- speedfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9ooooh flickr wallpapers...now i've gotta go out and upgrade...
- mysticmcj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This would be a great article if it didn't mention "One good reason to consider an upgrade to " in it - That may be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
"You mean I get that as a default background without having to go somewhere and click on it? SOLD!" - CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2In addition to wallpapers, Vista also apparently includes the collaborative work of thousands of programmers and developers... but they're not on flickr, so whatever. =P
- zip22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is there someplace where a person could download all the wallpapers included with vista? google turned up some results, but 2 of the folders i downloaded from my search do not seem complete (namely, they didn't include these 2).
- jmkogut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is like telling people to "upgrade" to Ubuntu for Beryl. It's absurdly moronic.
How to get the full resolution photos (these are really nice):
(1) Go to the page of the photo that you want, view source.
(2) Search for "page_photo_id" Save this. For me it was:
page_photo_id = '352697406';
(3) Look a few lines down for something like:
global_photos['352697406'].server = '129';
global_photos['352697406'].secret = 'b297488253';
Save both of these also.
(4) Decide which size you want, s for small, m for medium, l (lowercase L) for large, and o for original.
From there you can construct a url like so:
http:// farm1.static.flickr.com/{the server}/{the photo id}_{the secret}_{the size}.jpg
(make sure to remove the space after http://)
If this doesn't work, try using a different extension. It will be in whatever format he uploaded it in originally. It could be png, jpg, or gif. I'm positive he used jpg for all of the photos though.
I got this:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/129/352697406_b297488253_o.jpg- zumpiez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or right click and do View Page Info in firefox.
- jmkogut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That won't work, as he has the photos protected.
One cannot simply View Page Info into Mordor! - nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah you can do all that if you want a way over-sharpened (there are speckles in the sky, it should be a nice gradient, the tree has halos around the branches), over-saturated image with dust on the sensor (at least three large spots in the upper right corner of the frame).
- nonconformist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"One good reason to consider an upgrade to Vista, Microsoft's just-released upgrade to Windows: the default set of desktop wallpapers it ships with include several from Flickr members."

- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've long since been using Flickr for desktop backgrounds. No need to buy Vista just for that.
One can spend hours exploring Flickr. I usually do it by day:
http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/2007/01/15/ - greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2too bad there's no "Bury -> Who the ***** cares?" option.
- JoeSlingo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3A good majority of the computing public out there should take heed of the many warnings being written about Vista's extent of Vendor Lockin, DRM and plain old "It sucks, don't do it" anectdotes. You, as a consumer, are putting your money where you want your future choices to end up. If you fancy lack of choice, 0 alternatives, and having someone dictate what you can and cant do with your comp, then make your Vista choice. Just keep in mind, one of these days you will have to decide what is more important to you - Freedom or Wallpaper (and other crack-like novelties) and by the time you figure it out, you may be all out of choices. If you think it can't happen, then just take a look around the software section at Best Buy next time your in there. How many different companies names can you spot on the boxes? Notice All the EA logos on everything? How many operating system vendors do you see on the shelves?

When looking at a picture you can click on the 'all sizes' button, which has a magnifying glass with plus sign in it. This should default you to the largest size.- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oooh Flickr! Tittties!
- PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why do all the wall papers have such crappy JPEG compression, I mean seriously you can clearly see it?...

- digginestdogg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Whata shallow reason! Wallpapers I could install on XP? I am going to upgrade because I like the name 'Vista' and don't like 'XP'. But only if it runs well in Parallels on my Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo.
