- bmorlok, on 07/09/2008, -18/+4Your point about content resurfacing on digg - that happens 10 times more often on reddit, and sometimes there are multiple instances of the same story all on the front page of reddit. Don't get me wrong i love Reddit too, but you just sound like a big whiner.
- MalDON, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Sure it happens more, but less hits the homepage. Id you set reddit up to hide down voted sotrys it's really easy to "click and ignore".
- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/09/2008, -3/+5Reddits entire interface looks like *****. I wouldn't bother. It looks like it was programmed by a bunch of high school jackasses.
- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3I would like to add that Digg just came out with the Recommendation Engine which is quite a piece of work. If you have not been Digging every shout sent to you no mater what the content....and have only been Digging shouts that are of interest to you, Digg has really just saved you hundreds of hours per week Digging for stories that interest you. No other social website has this feature.
And back to the interface. Reddits interface, how it weaves back and forth across the page...I just never got that. I have had quite a few classes in programming and I never thought that they had a great grasp of programming vs. interface skills development.
- Ryan0617, on 07/09/2008, -0/+57Fair point made. Digg is getting worse by the day. If there weren't as many power users and people just voted on what they like rather than trying to get diggs to up it, it would be alot better place.
- lensman00, on 07/09/2008, -3/+9I don't have a problem with the concept of power users. Some of them are even-handed in their sourcing, pulling interesting stories from lots of different places. And some of them obviously do put in a lot of legwork to track down good material. A few of the better sci/tech power users are probably what is keeping the site going at this point.
However, some of the most active users are spammers. Either they are sourcing entirely or mostly from their blog, or pimping a single major site (typically their employer).
The REAL power users need to cut off the oxygen of the spammers. Knocking back about a dozen of the people who are turning Digg into a marketing apparatus would improve the front page immeasurably. - d3lta, on 07/09/2008, -3/+11Digg this up if you think the recommendation engine only exacerbates this situation
- thegreenspanput, on 07/09/2008, -3/+0not to mention those dictators Rose and Adleman
- daridave, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3I agree. I'm not cheering Reddit -- I don't use it. But I do agree with EVERY point he makes. What the heck is going on?

- Natitude, on 07/09/2008, -2/+47Good post. I love a good digg bash. In my opinion, digg has lost almost all of it's credibility in last six months. They went from a democratic site where good content would go FP simply because ppl would vote for it (and the crap would be buried), to a dictatorship where only certain ppl and certain sites can get to the top. The purpose of digg has been lost.
- ats314, on 07/09/2008, -2/+17digg lost all credibility the first time a mcdonalds ad took up half my screen. Actually, it was really Mr. Baby Man that killed digg for me. And the fact that 90% of the front page is submitted by 10 users. I logged in for the first time in weeks just to digg up this article, which I first saw on reddit, like most digg material.
- Fjosnisse, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4a dictatorship? really? you need to get out more.
- rocko_stazetti, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2It all went down hill when they added the friend feature. The shouts made it even worse.
- jenel, on 07/09/2008, -1/+18The real question is: is this the real MrBabyMan? And if it is, why hasn't he taken over reddit yet?
http://www.reddit.com/user/mrbabyman- DarkDx, on 07/09/2008, -3/+14NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- MrBabyMan, on 07/09/2008, -10/+33That ain't me.
For the record, I also do not own www.mrbabyman.com- benologist, on 07/09/2008, -3/+13I notice you didn't go on record for not owning 2girls1cup.....
- zaibatsu, on 07/09/2008, -18/+8Hey STFU mrbabyspam I'm sick of the blog SEO crap you post on digg. Let alone to those stupid xkdvcd things. Gimme a break, let me get a couple of stories on the FP, instead of stealing from all my spammy sites.
Go watch some Babylon 5 or something.
Geesh
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 07/09/2008, -4/+4Because he can't.
Reddit > Digg
- MalDON, on 07/09/2008, -1/+34I don't request digg as much anymore for similar reasons:
1. The comments suck. When you view a story, and they are all from people trying to push it to the homepage, it's very pathetic. It reminds me of youtube. "Awesome post". In addition, it appears digg has been overrun by wannabe b-tards.
2. The content is usually a few days behind what is on reddit. I rarely find anything new on Digg. Digg used to be a place where you could find new information on technology, now it's just break.com with a different name. After all "This is the coolest explosion you will see all day."
3. The older the information, the more digg it gets. Not really much to say, but just look at yesterdays top story: "Bush pardons himself."
4. The ego.- benologist, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8To be fair the top thread in a reddit discussion is usually focused on a spelling mistake...
- MalDON, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Yes, but at least the comments are actually entertaining.
- ledguitar, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4I'll agree with the comments suck thing. People reposting comments just to get diggs on them. I don't know how many times I've seen ***** The RIAA. I mean, we get it. The RIAA sucks. Stop trying to get free diggs just by posting that. It's really hard to find good, original comments these days.
- jenel, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Dude, diggs increase your e-penis. Just be thankful Digg doesn't have the comment karma system that reddit does.
- benologist, on 07/09/2008, -0/+8To be fair the top thread in a reddit discussion is usually focused on a spelling mistake...
- KaiSe7eN, on 07/09/2008, -3/+17Yeahhhh....I Too frequent Reddit a lot more than I used to nowadays. To me, the content is so much better and diverse, the community is more mature, and the comments are damn sure funnier. It also seems to me that most stories I click to view, the servers aren't overloaded and I'm actually able to view them. Also, the blogspam on Digg is ridiculous, and yes, I'm looking at YOU DivineCaroline!!!
Oh, and I hate Kevin Rose too. - rebopper, on 07/09/2008, -1/+15Digg is slipping...
- Pic0, on 07/09/2008, -11/+7I just looked for the first time at Reddit and Reddit has the same stupid ***** that Digg does.
"No, THIS is what "way too calm before death" looks like."
"www.rim.jobs is Research in Motion's actual URL!"
and it hurts my eyes when reading for over 20 seconds - tcpip4lyfe, on 07/09/2008, -1/+15Why can't you use both?
- PabloMac, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2Or neither.
- tdmoney, on 07/09/2008, -2/+28I use both
reddit for my news and information
digg for OMG TOP 7 BADASS COMIC BOOK BOOBIES ON MAC!!!?! - oscargamble, on 07/09/2008, -8/+30reddit is fugly.
- Polarize, on 07/09/2008, -2/+10That's what I was just thinking. It would be viable if the interface wasn't as unnavigable as down town London in a semi truck.
The interface's ugliness and inability to be used cannot be overstated.
- Polarize, on 07/09/2008, -2/+10That's what I was just thinking. It would be viable if the interface wasn't as unnavigable as down town London in a semi truck.
- maxino, on 07/09/2008, -3/+7Good post,
Kevin, I hope readdit.....oooppps read-it - ekso, on 07/09/2008, -9/+2First rule of Reddit is you do talk about Reddit ON DIGG.
- ChoiceMad, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Strangely, there are currently three submissions on reddit's fp talking about digg's problems.
-This one (Why I’m leaving Digg & focusing primarily on Reddit)
-Digg is trending down
-Digg appears to be censoring stories about telecom spying and Congress shredding the Constitution in advance of today's vote - 1200 Diggs without making the front page!
- ChoiceMad, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Strangely, there are currently three submissions on reddit's fp talking about digg's problems.
- ekso, on 07/09/2008, -10/+2First rule of Reddit is - you do not talk about Reddit ON DIGG.
- WallnutBoy, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5First rule on Digg is - you learn how to use the ***** comment system.
- praveenmarkandu, on 07/09/2008, -5/+41i dont know if its the submitter who wrote this article/blog rant but if it is, he is a ***** hypocrite. some of the "quality stuff" the submitter has dugg:
-ANASLEX
-Roller Coaster Tycoon Rampage!
-Want to hack a parking lot? check this out!
-Chick Fights, Bag Snatchers & Handbag Martial Arts
im not denying digg is a sinking ship. im saying that you are the cause of it.- spect3r, on 07/09/2008, -4/+5And he's only submitted 18 Articles, which doesn't make him exactly a healthy contributor.
- roastedbagel, on 07/09/2008, -3/+5I prefer Fark over Reddit anyday. I too agree that Digg is obviously not what it was when I signed up a few months after it's inception. However I find Reddit to be more and more a clone of digg in the aspect of submission quality.
Hell I remember about a year or two ago when a top story on Reddit was a picture making fun of Digg, how Digg's front page was nothing but pictures. Well fast forward 3 months later and Reddit now had the same problem. What happens to Digg will eventually happen to Reddit.
Fark on the other hand has been extremely consistent for the past 7 years. And no other social networking site's community is funnier or wittier. - cgomez, on 07/09/2008, -3/+20Please don't Digg this, I don't need Digg users ruining Reddit too.
- neuromachine, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Yep, the problem is the stupid people on the Digg.
- djepik, on 07/09/2008, -1/+8Don't forget the problems with the algorithim that were highlighted this morning with the 1400 digg upcoming story.
- kinseyincanada, on 07/09/2008, -1/+10reddit does get stories first and there is a lot less retards, but the interface ***** sucks.
- tdmoney, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1at least reddit's interface wasn't totally broken for 8 months....
that's when I found reddit, I'll admit the UI took a little getting used to but at least it didn't cripple my browser.
- tdmoney, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1at least reddit's interface wasn't totally broken for 8 months....
- DeskFlyer, on 07/09/2008, -3/+3You see the same ***** on Reddit, just a day earlier.
- 1jaxstate1, on 07/09/2008, -0/+5Have u seen the top stories on reddit? That site isn't so high and mighty. I enjoy the occasional offbeat news story every now and then.
- rareblue, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Thank you, I could write lines all day about you posted but you said it all perfectly. Thank you!!
- SethEllis, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3Sure the algorithm and upcoming and so forth have something to do with it, but I think at the end of the day we have nobody to blame but ourselves. The bury brigade needs to get back in gear. We all know the stories/websites/users that are causing a problem, and yet nobody does anything to stop them. Instead we all contribute to the problem, and make them stronger in our own feeble attempts to game the system.
- adougy, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6Semi-agreed. People on Digg have some odd humor.
But it's so addictive... Like the favorite drug you know you shouldn't be doing. - dbbblondon, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2You know what i saw those stories this morning (UK time) and thought exactly the same - why am i wasting time with sh1t like a posting about a bottle of milk on a supermarket shelf, this isn't why i originally fell in love with digg.
Bring back the interesting stuff and yes get rid of the elite 20 or so users who dominate the system and make it harder for the good stuff to float to the top. - kateyall, on 07/09/2008, -2/+7Yeah, Digg sucks. Why am I here? Oh yeah. I love Digg anyway. And I'm lonely.
- ShootTheCore, on 07/09/2008, -2/+6Just try going to Reddit. You will come crawling back to Digg eventually. They all do...
- WallnutBoy, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3Dugg purely for the Diggnation hate.
- Hayes, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2If it didn't show the username of who submitted the story unless you click "more" or something, I think it would improve the community.
- saqer, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2thank you! i've been saying this for weeks.
- zyl0x, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Honestly, the way Digg's been working lately, I'm kind of surprised this made it to FP.
- chadell, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3We cannot all be on front page at the same time. Just get over it!
- aimhelix, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Great post. I don't hate on Digg. I hate on the powerusers who magically skew the rating towards useless articles. I once used to frequent Digg because of great posts but I'm personally sick of seeing XKCD comics, OLD.. OLD pics (funny but old) and Apple this.. Apple that... Windows this.. Windows that...
- KnightMareInc, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2I couldn't agree more with the last part, "Digg · Same old content, constantly being regurgitated". People are simply too depresrate to make the front page.
- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2depresrate
What is that?
- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2depresrate
- LemonHerb, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Never tried reddit but I will now, it is getting strange here and even if I want to look at the comments on a WTF kind of article I have to sift through the digg hate and half the resonable comments are burried.
- PacketScan, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1reddit has alot of crap posts..
- tdmoney, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1but the difference is that with reddit you can control what you see on the front page in your user settings
- dannyknight, on 07/09/2008, -2/+10Maybe because Digg has become Fox News for liberals?
- picpak, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3On the front page of reddit as of right now:
This article
Digg appears to be censoring stories about telecom spying and Congress shredding the Constitution in advance of today's vote - 1200 Diggs without making the front page!
Digg is Trending Down
C'mon, guys. Even we never insult them that much. - irishmcsg2, on 07/09/2008, -2/+8Funny, a minute ago this was FP, and after a refresh, it was nowhere to be seen. Definitely not the best choice, digg.
- dreesemonkey, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I go to both, and to be honest the # of articles I find interesting on either site is very low. It's mostly just people flexing their internet degrees in politics, windows/apple/ubuntu fanboy articles, or zany, hilarious and whacky pictures/lists/fox news/comics.
Once in a while I find something that's interesting, though. I went on vacation a few weeks ago and I've been to both sites maybe 5 or 6 times total since then, it's kinda of hard to get back in the rhythm. - pathouston22, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I keep having to uncheck topics because of the SPAM. Too much Obama crap, bye bye 2008 Election topics. Too much 3G crap, bye bye Apple topics. What's next?
- suhongy, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Digg = weak sauce
- cleggg, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Digg is starting to become its worst enemy. 1 sided, the same stories always hit the front page.
it's not what it used to be. It seems to have fallen into mainstream media for net users, where only a select few choose what's to be posted, while the good relevent stuff is left un-seen.
you can't go wrong with simple. When you start ranking members, and making things too complicated, going for a specific look, trying to make digg a new "cool" trend, a fashion statement, a popularity contest, it loses what its main objective was. - koonchu, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Digg is broken as *****, but....well....
It's DIGG. The branding just rocks. - Polarize, on 07/09/2008, -1/+12Is it just me, or did this just get taken off the front page at 249 diggs and counting?
- EllisAshbrook, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6I saw it too.
- cleggg, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6was thinking the same thing. I had to find it through my profile.
- tdmoney, on 07/09/2008, -1/+5LAME digg...
***** LAME - irishmcsg2, on 07/09/2008, -0/+4Yup. I mentioned that 6 posts above ya ;)
- Luigison, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6I don't request diggs. Never have. Never will. Social promoting is what's ruining digg. Diggs should be based on content, not who submitted it or what catchy title or pic they used.
- Luigison, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Please explain. I'd hate to know that I've been making Digg comments wrong all this time and no one has corrected me.
