Why it sucks to be friends with Jason Calacanis.
flickr.com — Don't add Calacanis as a friend on Facebook

- digg it
- jdawg, on 03/31/2008, -46/+55thanks for point it out. i was cross posting my delicious to facebook and it was adding the mahalo flower. we've sinced removed the flower replacing it with a thumbnail of the site we're bookmarking. i agree the flower was over the top/obnoxious. we've corrected this for everyone using Mahalo Share. When is this screen shot from anyway??! because we fixed this weeks ago. all the best, jason at mahalo.com

- Goblin, on 03/31/2008, -3/+10The content of the page isn't the issue. Wht was happening was Json was feeding a lot of stuff through to his facebook feed promoting stories on www.Mahalo.com. Anyone who was friends with him found their feed being overwhelmed with Mahalo stories and it kinda ruined the ability to see anything else, as can be seen in the screen grab. As Jason has pointed out, they've now fixed this so it isn't obnoxious anymore.
As for who he is - started Weblogs Inc which brings us sites like Joystiq and Engadget. Mahalo is a "human powered search engine" and is useless for hardcore googlers, but is great for your mum if she can't be bothered trawling through five pages of blogspam to find a definitive page (according to the wisdom of the crowd) for a chosen topic. He's also a shameless self-publicist, which is why his projects tend to be successful (netscape digg clone not included). Lots of people hate him/his attitude, I think he's funny, and I'm not just saying that because I want to win the MacBook Air he's giving away on Twitter.- Coffeedemon, on 03/31/2008, -5/+1"Anyone who was friends with him found their feed being overwhelmed with Mahalo stories and it kinda ruined the ability to see anything else, as can be seen in the screen grab. Thats really really great for the small percentage of the overall digg population that actually gives half a damn about this guy and has him as a friend/reads his feed every day. For the other 99% I don't think I speak out of line when I say piss off and stop wasting space and bandwidth on this *****. - raynar, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3Mahalo - search engine where people design your search results...gee nothing could go wrong with a company who gets investments from outside companies, tailoring search results for product placement...

- sockpuppets, on 03/31/2008, -3/+17Don't care to.
- happytedium, on 03/31/2008, -8/+53Front page? Please.
- MCA2142, on 03/31/2008, -8/+1Don't show this to Leo.
- reichec, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1I get tired of this douche spewing his advertisment bullcrap on TWIT. When did it go from being actually about tech to being about captian douche's lame websites.
- kastlip88, on 03/31/2008, -1/+38Am I getting old is anyone else having trouble reading what's in the picture?
- antdude, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4There's no larger option. :( Buried from me.
- ShawnIsCool, on 03/31/2008, -9/+217Who the eff is Jason Calacanis? Why can't I see anything? Why is this on the front page?
- DeathJux, on 03/31/2008, -2/+25Creepy that we both wrote almost the same thing at almost the same time, considering there were only two comments in here when I wrote mine...
- chedabob, on 03/31/2008, -1/+12He runs a search engine that consists entirely of user-submitted links (I think). It works similar to Google's page rank system, but rank is determined by people sharing the link, not just placing the link on a page.
- Thefatheroftime, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3The point is not to read it, just to bear witness to the many many multiple posts.
Jason fixed it now. Story irrelevant.- WilliamDavis, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3This is awesome. I just finished breakfast and decided my day would be complete if I could just get one single thing accomplished... I wanted to bear witness to many many multiple posts. Glad that's overwith.
- fugazied, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4Hes a dude who works in the IT industry, owns a few websites, and is a pundit who talks on some podcasts. From listening to TWIT podcast (the week in tech), he seems like a cool guy. Theres no reason for this to be on the front page though, its only promoted his website if anything.
- haleym, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Calacanis
- DeathJux, on 03/31/2008, -7/+155Who the hell is Jason Calacanis, why should I care, and why is this on the front page?
- ShawnIsCool, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7I think I've been made, SELF DESTRUCT.
But REALLY creepy, and strange. Just shows how small the world is and how alike we humans think. Or I could just be a replicator. - fileptr, on 03/31/2008, -2/+3Jason is CEO of www.mahola.com (human powered search engine) and recently hit the blogosphere with this : http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/03/07/calacanis-fir ...
- Coffeedemon, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4So its random spam then... Or shameless self promotion... Or sneakily using a third party to push a story about you and by extension your new product in front of the eyes of millions. Take your pick, the spam smells the same no matter what can it comes out of.
- ShawnIsCool, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7I think I've been made, SELF DESTRUCT.
- Adam420, on 03/31/2008, -4/+64This is dumb whoever dugg this *****.
- Asheis, on 03/31/2008, -3/+27Had trouble reading the picture (no option to resize, or am I just a ditz?) and I have no idea who Jason Calacanis is, and thus, would have absolutely no reason to add him to my facebook. Dugg down.
- CCoe, on 03/31/2008, -2/+53How does does something that is completely uninteresting and unreadable get over 70 diggs so far and reach the front page? Plus how does that incoherent babbling from "jdawg" get dugg up (as of now)?
- bandomac, on 03/31/2008, -4/+0Because the story was about him. Makes sense to digg up his comment as it related to the story.
BTW: He is the guy who sold Weblogs, inc. (think engadget) to AOL, and then turned Netscape into the DIGG competitor. - CCoe, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1It doesn't make any sense to digg him up. He's speaking like fool.
- bandomac, on 03/31/2008, -4/+0Because the story was about him. Makes sense to digg up his comment as it related to the story.

- sfacets, on 03/31/2008, -3/+43This is stupid. Buried as lame, digg should have better content filters.
- jeuhrn, on 03/31/2008, -12/+29I don't know WHAT THE ***** this is about. Why are there god damn ASSHOLES driving up diggs on inane ***** lately? Ruins my morning. :( (it's morning in norway)
- reclusivemonkey, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6When your morning is ruined by the content on Digg, you need to spend some time away from the internet my friend.
- jeuhrn, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Well, ***** me, man, I'm at work, what else would I possibly be doing but surfing the intertubes?
- RocketSeason, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1You aren't the alpha and the omega of the internet. Obviously alot of people get this and agree with it.

- bob12321, on 03/31/2008, -8/+3For those of you who don't know who Jason Calacanis is this should cover it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Calacanis- synik, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5is the article picture showing his head or his ass?
- BreamHead, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3Dude, the answer is both, 'cos his head is UP his ass...
- quomen, on 03/31/2008, -2/+11DONT GIVE SPAMMERS MORE ATTENTION
- slightlyoffbeat, on 03/31/2008, -1/+9Quote from Jason:
"we fixed that. i was sending my delicious feeds through and the flower was getting obnoxious. i've stopped sending my delicious feed to Facebook all the time and we've replaced the flower with a screen grab
thanks for pointing it out... it is obnoxious i agree. "
Why is this on the front page? - fullstop102, on 03/31/2008, -2/+16Okay..... And this made the front page because? Bury. :(
- Schoffstall, on 03/31/2008, -4/+3The RIAA is responsible...

- c4m320n, on 03/31/2008, -2/+7Uh, who the heck is this guy anyway? Noone cares about him. Buried.

Burry
- unfinite, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4It's the big red X.
- deadbaby, on 03/31/2008, -1/+9The guy flat out admits he's using this stuff to promote himself and his company. Why would you expect anything less? Apparently a lot of people bought into the idea he's somehow more important than the millions of other people on the Internet. Just another spammer.
- unfinite, on 03/31/2008, -1/+7wtf is this? buried
- Kral, on 03/31/2008, -0/+9This is proof that diggers blindly digg any ***** that hits the front page. 'Bury' actions on the front page should count x10 to counter this effect.
- BreamHead, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Wish I could give you more than one thumbs-up here...
- BreamHead, on 03/31/2008, -1/+6What an absolute ***** waste of our time. I can't help but think this is orchestrated by whoever these losers are to hype this *****-wrangling butt-punching sack-tickler's profile. BURY.
- aceakm, on 03/31/2008, -6/+1Why it sucks to have friends period: http://youtube.com/watch?v=smUCdkx-YGQ
- funkyjunk3, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5I see you've found new ammo, now that the (in)famous uuiU is dead.
- aceakm, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Haha, I think it's a pretty good one. What do you think?
- funkyjunk3, on 03/31/2008, -0/+5I see you've found new ammo, now that the (in)famous uuiU is dead.
- legendxx, on 03/31/2008, -2/+6anyone that dugg this should be immediately banned from digg.
- rudezombie, on 03/31/2008, -2/+4Nice to know Flickr is being used to post screenshots of somebody's livejournal arguments or whatever the ***** that even is.
- drunkmuppet, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4Wheres the bury for stupid button?
- Coffeedemon, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Why would you add someone you don't truly know as a friend on Facebook? I get enough spam from friends and family that I have known my whole life.
- MetalHaze, on 03/31/2008, -1/+5I hope you find all solace in the fact that I logged in JUST to BURY this POINTLESS *****!
- blackheartx, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1who cares??
- adv3nture, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0Who cares, it's already well established that Calacanis is a douche.
- ceris, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2FYI: If you want to know who he is you can suffer thru a This Week in Tech with him on the panel. He is one of the worst guests on that show. Full of himself and contributes nothing but self promotion for his sub par services.
- Greatn3ss, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2how did 305 people realize they couldn't read the damn picture, and still digg it?
- jdawg, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1wow. this made the homepage?!?!?!?? go spammer UKDAVE!
- BAMAToNE, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2What am I looking at?
- jdawg, on 03/31/2008, -4/+4also, this is a two week old screen shot of an issue that was resolved in some beta software. really dude.
also, Facebook has this really advanced new feature: unfriend. also, facebook allows you turn off individual content types or people... i know it's crazy. please RT(f)M before wasting everyone's time with an image that you can;t even read!
also, fairly obvious you made the image tiny so folks could not read that they were actually interesting bookmarks... thus the reason i have 5,000 folks on facebook following me. many folks like getting interesting links (check: digg).
really dude- nonNewtonian, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2really dude, i suck, really
- VinnieDaMac, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1who?
- BigRedDSP, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4I signed in just to bury this.
- bizchris, on 03/31/2008, -0/+2Side topic from the Calacanis bashing - but this is a good point to realize about Facebook and popular people in general. I added Keith Ellison (congress), and constantly see him adding friends in my updates. Can't wait for personalized preferences that say "I want to see who my friends are adding as friends, except in the case of these X popular people."
- MikeonTV, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Jason Calacanis is the one behind Mahalo? Color me surprised.
- qwkredfox, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1I DIGG A HOLE AND BURY THIS
- shanmac, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1so true, I unfriended him 4 months ago and haven't looked back
- infamousjeff, on 04/01/2008, -1/+1 Mahalo.com is a great site, if you're interested in a subject join the http://greenhouse.mahalo.com and make some easy money doing something you enjoy. Hell do enough and I bet Jason will throw you a Macbook Pro. That's just the type of guy he is. He is from NY and is a successful entrepreneur gangster! Listen to him on some of the TWiT podcasts. He's hilarious and very clever.
Good job on gaming Digg, Jason. LOL. (I don't think it was his intent but I wouldn't put it past him ;) )
To those about this article's relevancy: This is more of a gossip piece on a Silicon Valley celebrity than hard fact news. However, Digg *can* be used to SHARE things that you DIG! So in conclusion: I'm a Calacanis fanboy and I agree that if the article is true then you should add him on Pownce(if you haven't been there in the last 2 months you need to check it out. I was a hater at first) and Twitter instead of Facebook. If you are a tech entrepreneur then you will find it interesting in reading the comments of a rich serial entrepreneur who keeps himself very accessible. -
