YouTube to Launch TV-Style Ads This Summer
redherring.com — YouTube is experimenting with pre-roll and post-roll advertising spots, and will begin rolling them out this summer, according to Suzie Reider, head of advertising for Google's video-sharing site. "None of us working in this area want to recreate the TV model," she adds.

- Nekko17, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Never underestimate the power of the Fox.
On another note, xtube will be getting all my youtube traffic. - MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@qazyhoods "oh *****. no firefox add-on can save us now"
No EXISTING add-on that is. If they are a fixed length ad, you could easily cut-n-cache the SWF file like so many existing software items do. - djlosch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10well google hasn't figured out a way to beat adblock for adsense, so i wouldn't put it past them to just ignore adblock.
and the problem with pre and post ads is the way a lot of traditional media outlets use ads. if you pay attention to the news, a staggering portion is merely an anchor talking with a few stills possibly interjected. traditional media outlets have even done this with their websites. it's a 15 or 30 second ad for a 30-60 second video that is 20% stills and 80% anchors/reporters talking. there is rarely any video of the incident.
with the advent of internet news, a lot of us are intelligent enough to get away from linear media, which really kills ad revenues because you're not forced to sit through crap to get to relevant info. - oskite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3You can never unfox the Fox.
- Hiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11wtf are the ads even there for? Am I finally going to be able to watch all of my viacom shows on youtube?
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5oskite, I believe the expression goes you can never "outfox the fox"
- HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3>> oskite, I believe the expression goes you can never "outfox the fox"
Tell that to the Fx anchor hover bug. And yes, it's a bug because it only happens most of the time, not all, and has no problem passing in IE6, IE7, Safari, and Opera.
- Nekko17, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Never underestimate the power of the Fox.
- therealdeal101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+80Hello I am from the future.
My name is John Titor. I am sorry to say this but Youtube dies in Summer of 2007 because of these ads.
RIP Youtube...- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+28John Titor, take me with you!
- Nekko17, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3You're not Harry Potter.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23You need the time crystals, stupid.
- RobototoboR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Bring you own weapons. Safety not guaranteed.
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4***** yeah. You gotta get yourself on Coast to Coast for an interview!
- senorcool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Maybe now they will be able to afford all their lawsuits and future lawsuits.
- MrVW, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9ahh well thats youtube down the pan. anyone got another good video websites :D

- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38In other words, expect youTube traffic to plummet this Summer and other sites to become more popular.
- toxicshok, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3There goes YouTube. Now who will sell google, a great yet unprofitable idea
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -5/+12Adios Youtube, twas fun while it lasted.
- arctic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I thought Google didn't want it to make money.. but to control the nets..
- uselessexpert, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn, I guess advertisement is the ONLY way to make money on the internet.
So much for YouTube staying true to their fans.
Are the people that submit clips going to be paid for having ads placed on their video clips? - arctic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@MaximegalonInfo
Google the word sarcasm - zapperdude60, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1uh don't they already have banner ads?
- BuddyDoQ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28As a content provider on YouTube, will I now get a cut for my work, or is this just an annoyance for my audience?
Ads? Sure, but you better pay up or I'll post my video somewhere else!- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Watch this video of Eric Schmidt at the Web 2.0 expo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxzDU3tTzGA&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fblog%2Eouter%2Dcourt%2Ecom%2Findex2%2Ehtml
And before everyone gets all alarmist, think about what CEO Schmidt has said in that video:
He essentially divides YouTube into two different sectors: one segment encapsulate the well-known shows; things like the Daily Show, Colbert, and other IP that are already broadcast on another medium. The other segment is the user-generated content "phenomena", as Schmidt says.
Couple this with what the article says:
"The idea is to generate long-promised revenues that Google can share with the more than 1,000 “premium” content creators whose video material is available on YouTube, Ms. Reider said."
And I think we can all expect the premium content to be well-established shows. What this means is that YouTube will be pushing ad's on things like The Daily Show, and not Mom & Pop's VideoBlog. I suspect they will have ways to bring Mom & Pop into the premium scheme if they take off with high-volume traffic. - BuddyDoQ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@smellchicken
No I'm not. If they're making money by altering my presentation then I have no choice but to remove my content and find a different host. If they would like to negotiate prices to continue displaying my works with ads, I'm all ears.
Their sponsors are not my sponsors, and if I had sponsors, their sponsors could make my sponsors very upset. It's all very convoluted. But the bottom line is I'm greedy. *shrug* - fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Perhaps you'd like to "pay money" for a host if you don't want them to offset the cost of providing your crappy videos to thousands / tens of thousands of people with advertising?
- chubbstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its most likely that add will only be on videos from established networks or companies and not youtubers themselves. i mean, wow, if they put adds on original content there would be a total uproar of the sorts that BuddyDoQ is raising by other (greedy/morally outraged/betrayed/anti-corporate) youtubers.

- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Eric Schmidt said as much at the Web 2.0 expo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxzDU3tTzGA&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fblog%2Eouter%2Dcourt%2Ecom%2Findex2%2Ehtml
- stellamaris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Post-run advertisements would be fine. I could just close the window when it came on. But if I am forced to watch an ad before content, I'll be looking for that content elsewhere.
- dogstylee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Pre run ads = guarantee to lose many viewers
post ads = doesn't matter, just close tab
middle ads = lose many viewers
Bloody idiots.- tony23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No ads = lose money
- xJVz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@tony:
So those ads that are on YouTube already; they aren't ads you say? Hmm...
- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2somebody will hopefully release an alternate .fla loader that lets you jump past the ad with a click.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This will be annoying for those who watch a lot of videos like on videosift. :(
- TheTjalian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Uhhh what the hell, Google is getting money for what I put on the internet. They can GTFO.
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They need to put advertisements in the videos to pay for al the lawsuits they'll get for putting advertisements in the videos.
- niradg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8...youtube to be worth nothing by fall
- MrZeolite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wtf, I love Google...I hope this decision doesn't make me feel otherwise, we'll see how it all unfolds I guess.
On a side note, I am out of penis pills...why the hell aren't there more of those ads? can someone plz send an e-mail pointing me in the right direction they're almost impossible to find nowadays! - leonwestbrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You have to understand that google is not running a ***** charity. It cost MONEY to host those videos.
That being said hopefully people will be given the option to host said ads ONLY IN EXCHANGE FOR MONEY.
I don't want ads on videos I've made, I really don't intend on making money on Youtube. I just use it as a soapbox and nothing more. - LGod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ads, the plague of the internet. Ever since they have shown up, it has never been the same. It is kind of like going from the wild west into the industrial age, just more laws and more pollution.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes they're quite the "plague". Those pesky little ***** are directly responsible for virtually the entire internet being free. God I hate having so much available for free. I wish I could just pay for every single site I use instead of have a small portion of my screen show some ad.
- NYCWD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So sad... so so sad...
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is the end for YouTube. It was only a matter of time anyway.
- 3rdeyepro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i went to a conference where AOL was talking about doing this. apparently they have their own version of youtube. I stood up and told them it was a mistake.
users will just flock to a different video service that doesn't have commercials - Grayfox777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh great, now I'll have to watch a 30 second commercial before I can see a 15 second video clip! I can't wait til something better takes over YouTube's popularity.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Youtube is already a walking corpse since they took down anything vaguely copyrighted.
If they think anyone is going to watch in-line ads for the GARBAGE that's up there now, they've been licking toads. - NewzClewz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of the savvy content creators will make some serious money... no matter what anyone thinks, it takes time to create quality content.
Time costs money, so if the content creators can get paid, I don't see anything wrong with it.
Some people will piss all over this comment and tell me that all content creators should make entertaining content solely for the art form and the personal enjoyment of others, blah blah blah.
Most people don't live in their parents basement... they have to pay real bills and stuff. OK, hammer me into the ground now and tell me how I am aligned with "The Man" and stuff.... GO! - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YouTube is slowly committing suicide.
- dbug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Every time I want to watch something on youtube the site seems to be laggy as hell and the videos are loading so slow they're all choppy and pretty much unwatchable.
- redwallhp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who wants to start a petition? Get moving. Firefox add-ons may come out eventually, but what's to stop YouTube from changing stuff to stop the add-on. The online commercial must die (see http://redwallhp.ntugo.com/2007/03/26/bad-ads-the-commercial-must-die/)
- iamthepinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, no more youtube for me!
- wtf00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well I'm going find new home, because I'm not going to sit watch 30 sec ad no thanks I get plenty of it on tv.. main reason I go this site because no ads and restriction...
- PiMPSP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldnt mind the ad's if say the quality of the encoded video was as goos as sayyy....Maxim.coms video section....but it aint youtubes video encoder sucks and seemingly always willl be , screw youtube.
- xmuzik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess that's the end of youtube as we know it, there are still sheeples that will stick around and take the bombardment of ads just like there are idiots that still whore themselves all over myspace while bombarded with enough thank you spams to crash a military grade server farm
- evan242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2no ads are like the entire appeal of youtube
- mikeabundo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To my understanding, video creators can opt in to pre- and/or post-roll ads: http://insideonlinevideo.com/?p=55
Video creators will determine for themselves whether or not pre-rolls work for their videos. - locojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now with their monetization of copyright infringement by means of ads, YouTube/Google can say goodbye to any chance at arguing DMCA safe harbor protection. Finally!
