http://bb.labs.zap2it.com/viewtopic.php?t=1294 - drlha, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Crap! I moved to zap2it after tv.yahoo.com turned into a *****. Anyone else recommend another decent TV listing site?
- longboarder543, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9TitanTV supports XML feeds I believe. www.titantv.com
- g4blows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It would be nice if they could just drop all of the program descriptions and just keep the minimum so that we could still schedule recordings. I've been using it for years and I would hate to see it go. I would lose most of my Myth box's functionality, well at least till a new service came along.
- willdiggforfood, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3DO NOT WAAAAAAANT!!1
- heavyd14, on 11/02/2007, -0/+32Hey Google, you wanna make a tv guide thing?
- n8dawg87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13it would be brilliant on googles end to do something like this.
step 1: create tv guide xml feed
step 2: find out what people are watching more accurately than neilson
step 3: sell data to TV networks and advertisers
step 4: profit
On a more serious note, I can't comprehend how much of a set back this is for the open source community. This forces a large number of users to use a Windows Media Center or a TiVo. Now if you're like me and live in Canada you're royally screwed b/c there is very limited cable card availability and no TiVo. This means we are stuck with REALLY ***** cable company PVRs that cost an arm and a leg and work horribly. alas... - heavyd14, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not only would it be brilliant, they might actually make a site that didn't suck.
Feature I'd want: Realize that I don't need a schedule for CNN (Every hour is news), the shopping channels (Every hour is shopping) and test pattern channel. (Yes, I have a channel of 24/7 test pattern complete with test tone 10x louder than the other channels.)
- count, on 10/23/2007, -1/+45This just strikes me as odd. They say they're getting abuse, but it seems like there should be a solution that doesn't involve cutting off home users.
- swift, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15I think Microsoft bought them and this is a quick and dirty way to stop OSS projects like myth.
Dang it - I forgot my Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie... - clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Exactly. They could throttle the connections if they wanted to. Abuse is only what they continue to allow. So instead of managing it, they are just dropping it altogether.
They could only allow connections once a week or 2 weeks or something like that. It wouldn't be that hard. So in other words, this is a lie and we want to know the real reason.
- swift, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15I think Microsoft bought them and this is a quick and dirty way to stop OSS projects like myth.
- dagar, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16Many users are willing to pay a small fee for this kind of thing.
- eth777, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Someone posted a poll on there asking if people were willing to pay a small fee. I've been using this service forever. Free is good, but I've never had one problem with this service, so I would pay up for it.
- t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3I would pay too if it was cheap. But right now I'm broke so it would be hard. I hope they keep it free. Or I hope some one else will release a similar service.
Just an idea. I wonder how hard would it be to setup another tuner to watch the tv guide channel and use ocr to gather guide data. - smartmlp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Although paying for it would be alright, what we really need is a network of mirrors. Sort of like anyone who wants to setup their own server for TV listings, once a day they would download the listing and then broadcast it to other users who can user their server instead of Zap2It.
- geckofiend, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7You would think so but they're not. An option was presented a while back that offered listings for a small fee with the profits going to fund myth development. If I recall correctly they got something like 50 subscribers max. People want it FREE period end of story.
I appluad zap2it! It serves the leeches right. - Jakyll, on 10/11/2007, -9/+7Pay for listings? That's called "TiVo."
- skubiszm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Tivo doesn't charge a small fee, they charge an arm and a leg. It would have to be significantly cheaper than Tivo. Like 10% of the Tivo fee. If that doesn't work we will just have to start using scripts that scrape the html based sites.
- dwbell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@geckofiend, TMS has never offered to sell data to individuals and have stated this will not be an option going forward. The Mythtv mailing list I'm on has had hundreds of posts in the last 48 hrs of people begging for the chance to pay for listings.
- eth777, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Someone posted a poll on there asking if people were willing to pay a small fee. I've been using this service forever. Free is good, but I've never had one problem with this service, so I would pay up for it.
- Massif, on 10/23/2007, -2/+16Yeah, MythTV users don't really have any alternatives except maybe using EIT data. I just got my MythTV box working perfectly. I really hope they change their minds or get bought by someone big like Google. I am reluctant to pay any kind of fees for this, but if it was the only option then I suppose I would do it.
- clickwir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Damnit, I just ordered my PVR-150 and hoped to have my Mythdora box up by this weekend.
- unoriginal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ZAP2it is owned by Tribune which just went private in a leveraged buyout. They wont be open to selling out to anyone else right now.
- jrandyw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've had a MythTV box since before the days of DataDirect/Zap2it. I think MythTV users will be able to simply switch back to an XMLTV based solution, like we did in the days before Zap2It was nice enough to give us free direct listings.
- skippyatuw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Most countries use XMLTV to basically read sites such as zap2it.com and translate it into guide information. This puts a huge strain on such websites, hence why the Labs service was created in the first place. Apparently it was too easy to avoid their commercial subscriptions with this, so they decided to dump the whole thing.
As for a pay service, I have doubts if people would pay for a service if they get XMLTV to work for US listings again. Yea it doesn't work as well as Labs does, but when people are used to getting something for nothing, it might be hard to get them to switch.- jrandyw, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I was about to post a comment basically echoing what you are saying. I've been running a MythTV system since...geez, whenever 0.14 was released. Anyway, while *might* be willing to pay for listings, the truth is, if there is a free option available, I won't. Screen scraping will make the whole "I'd be willing to pay a small fee" a mute point. While DataDirect has been pretty reliable (except when I've forgotten to renew my "subscription"), XMLTV was pretty damn reliable too.

- zort15, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This really sucks. Hopefully some one will come up with a new grabber for XML TV that will get it from somewhere else, though I don't know where that would be.
- ricree, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3What about some sort of wiki like thing, where people can enter the data in themselves. If enough people got involved, it could easily work in densely populated areas.
- wastern, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The TV Tracker widget for OS X uses Zap2it as well...
They just showed off their new version they'd be releasing at WWDC. It looked like a great update, hopefully they can get a new source for their data feeds
- jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5It would be nice to know the offending commercial parties and their contact information. I suspect their call center wouldn't be able to handle a 1000x increase on their phone system and network backbone. damn them for ruining a perfectly good thing for the rest of us... damn them
- fatdog789, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4You mean, damn them for ending a free service they aren't required to offer, and which is now draining the company's resources because people are abusing it?
My god! The horror! - Outdoor83, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This isn't quite the same as publishing someone's personal information. Having 100,000 people call up and complain because their company is an ass issues no personal threats, does not harass people at home, and does not garner any additional publicity to a *person*, just a *business* that doesn't have trouble sleeping at night.
I'd love to call these companies out for being jerks... bad people get what they deserve. No one deserves day/night harassment, but businesses? That's fair game. - dwbell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2just to clarify the situation. It is not end users who are abusing the free data it is commercial enterprise that are stealing the free data offered to end users rather than license it. zap2it labs was intentionally set up to accommodate the Myth crowd.
- jostheller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No... not damn zap2it, damn the unknown offending commercial companies that abused the system, forcing zap2it to turn it off. zap2it was incredibly generous, and I appreciate the service they have provided me for the last 4 years. I am pissed at the commercial companies that were taking advantage of zap2it's generosity.
I thought that was fairly clear when I said "damn them", obviously it wasn't.
- fatdog789, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4You mean, damn them for ending a free service they aren't required to offer, and which is now draining the company's resources because people are abusing it?
- linktothepast, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6I just emailed Zap2It and asked them if there were other places that offered this. If I find anything out I will let you all know.
- squish102, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Seems a pity that we going to have to probably go back to screen scraping and putting all that extra load on webservers.
- bootz52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11gbpvr uses this as well.
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -17/+2Damn, my GBPVR was finely working properly, time to install Vista.
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9WTF?
so your pvr software may be going down so you decide to trash your whole computer? - potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3No because its a dedicated machine and I prefer how easy Vista is to configure, this just adds to it.
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9WTF?
- zbeast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12 Zap2it Labs was at risk because of certain growing misuses of the Zap2it Labs data?
How do you a abuse Chanel guide data?- Ryokurin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They charge companies for the data for profit. People were turning around starting to sell the information they were giving away for free for profit. Know some computer store that sold MythTV? They probably used zap2it for the guide, and that was against the terms of service.
- mbelly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The guy who runs mythic.tv sells computers that run KnoppMyth. He contacted Zap2it, and they said that it is not companies that sell computers that use the data that is the problem. It is more likely some other companies that download the data, then resell that data to other people.
- Chicken2nite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If they are selling MythTV boxes to end users, who would then use zap2it as the tv guide, how is that any different from the end user who builds their own MythTV box and uses zap2it as the guide? Same dif in this case
- Ryokurin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They charge companies for the data for profit. People were turning around starting to sell the information they were giving away for free for profit. - gafasiesornivek, on 10/11/2007, -22/+2Oh noes! Whatever will you do without TV? Get your fat ass off a couch maybe.
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5People still do that? I though everyone watched it on a portable device while doing other thing! This is an incredible revelation!
- swordphish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29We should all try to persuade Google to start some sort of TV listings service.
- gopanthers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Not from Google, but if Google had TV listings it would be just like Couchville. They even compare their interface to Google Maps. (No feeds... yet, but nice and simple UI) http://www.couchville.com/
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Wow, couchville rocks... Now if I could just make it work with MythTV...
- t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Thats not going to be available to mythtv that site is owned by snapstream.
- vh1`, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8"Thats not going to be available to mythtv that site is owned by snapstream."
if it's on the internet, we can parse it - justinjstark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If google can do movie showtimes, they can surely do tv listings. Go Google!
- kahrytan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1 Someone could do XMLTV with Adsense or similar ads. Like the line "Buy LOST on DVD @ Amazon.com" would be in the description for a LOST episode. It would be one way for Google to bring Adsense to the tv.
- dinki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. Back to screen scraping we go.
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4outside the US they always have had to scape for data.
i wonder if they are laughing at us or still bitter they didn't have it for all this time.
either way it's a sad day. - moghua, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, zap2it worked for Canada as well.
- BobTurtle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1moghua,
Despite popular belief, Canada is not the only country in existence outside the U.S.
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4outside the US they always have had to scape for data.
- GrimRage, on 10/11/2007, -33/+2Time for all the cheap-ass freeloaders to man up and get a TiVo.
- Brasky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Yeah....TiVo is a solution....I love it when they charge you a monthly fee just so you can get these guides so you can use a piece of hardware that you bought.
Everyone is going to hate it, but at least MCE doesn't handicap you like this. - Pelapp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12@ GrimRage
What an ignorant comment.
You obviously have no idea what MythTV and HTPC's in general are all about!
I'm almost embarassed for you, for making such a lame attempt to be cool,
but ending up looking so stupid because your so out of your element (and probably league). - majorgeneralist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Actually I use Zap2It to populate my TiVo data. It all started back in the days when TiVo wouldn't offer Canadian TV guide data. A bunch of smart folks figured out how to populate the data from sources like XMLTV and then Zap2It. I just haven't switched to another method of getting guid data (a TiVo subscription).
Listen, I have a tough time justifying $40 a month for cable let alone $10 just to get a listing of what those channels have on.
I imagine my TiVos will just go dark and I will rely more heavily on web downloads - the picture is better and the ads have been cleaned out - the only down-side is the one day delay in watching my Survivor shows. - t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I switch from tivo to Mythtv. Why? Tivo is closed, I cant easily add a new hd or copy the shows off the tivo and transcode them to play on my palm pilot. Mythtv is a lot more work, but I like it more. Its faster. I hate updating a show on my tivo and waiting 5 mins.
/rant
- Brasky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Yeah....TiVo is a solution....I love it when they charge you a monthly fee just so you can get these guides so you can use a piece of hardware that you bought.
- mesostinky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This really sucks. I hope they will change their mind and allow us to pay some sort of nominal fee to use the service. $10 a user couldn't possibly do anything but help them out.
- Solstice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I've been using MythTV since 2004. Back then, MythTV used a HTML scraper to get the listings. It was slow, inaccurate, and didn't always return the correct listings. Furthermore, the XMLTV software needed to be updated everytime one of the sites it was scraping data from changed.
The Zap2It listings were a godsend. I suspect that if no alternative service is put in place, MythTV users will drop off. It was a true pain to have to update XMLTV every few weeks when the scrapers broke. Zap2It made the whole setup much more reliable.- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3And yet, we still get people on here saying, "I'm reluctant to pay for it." What a bunch of ***** leaches.
THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3And yet, we still get people on here saying, "I'm reluctant to pay for it." What a bunch of ***** leaches.
- rushfan, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3nevermind...
- DimensionalPunk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I use it for MediaPortal, the alternative sucks. Damn.
- Brasky, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5So does MediaPortal, buggy *****....
- immrlizard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I tried media portal and thought it was one of the nicest free windows powered systems. I ended up going with Myth because I got tired of windows and actually got everything working in Myth. Sad to see it end.
- thecheatah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Before i found mythtv, I wrote a script that I use to use for dvring. It got its listing information from yahoo:
http://tv.yahoo.com/listings;_ylt=An1cGgfcySTCUYx6Jo3AZ9yAo9EF
I just tested my old script and it STILL works!! If someone can give me the schema for the xml feed that mythtv reads, (I suck at researching stuff like this) I can write something that can use yahoo and translate it into a nice xml feed for mythtv.
I believe yahoo is a open source supporter, hopefully they wont mind!!!- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Here's a sample guide feed:
http://ontv.orcon.net.nz/listings.xml - jmcantrell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1how do you get access to the xml?

- jemmrich, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is soo sad :( I am another long time MythTV user. I have really enjoyed the reliability of Zap2It's service. I dont understand why they would drop it. Im sure they could make a great deal of money by charging a subscription.. i mean, why not, considering the hammering that their servers go through with data requests and the staffing/support required to do this.
Thankfully i have never had to use a scrapper, but it looks like i will need to start looking into this. Maybe even look into developing my own with some fellow myth users. Im sure the open source community can develop something more reliable and inconvenient than scraping. - djphatjive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1***** what about GBPVR????????? WHAT ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!! HAHAHahhahahahahahahahahaha Oh wait...
- swift, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Please post your comments on the Zap2it forum page.
There is a running poll of Zap2It users on their forums, started by a user, regarding users' willingness to pay for the service. If you'd be willing to pay for EPG information from Zap2It, you might stop by and vote. After logging in, you can access the poll here.
http://bb.labs.zap2it.com/viewtopic.php?t=1296
Here is some more info:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Data_Direct- Handcannons, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sadly the number of people actually willing to pay for something is far less than the number of people who will vote 'yes' for free.
- monkeybuffer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I also have used MythTv for a long time. I couldn't go back to watching regular TV, and I don't want to fiddle with XMLTV all the time either. I like the idea that somebody posted about a distributed server solution. As a developer I'd even be more than willing to spend my free time working on such a worthy cause.
The only problem, is how do you get the feed to distribute it in the first place? Maybe zap2it would be nice enough to give listings out to just a few master servers?
I know I'll be scanning sourceforge for something like this, and if I can't hop on board somebody else's project, I just might start my own. - yzerman, on 10/11/2007, -15/+0HEHE..
So glad I didn't waste my time with MythTV.
My Media Center PC doesn't have these problems.- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3doesn't the MCE use zap2it too?
- redmaxx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6MS has an agreement with Zap2It.
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3doesn't the MCE use zap2it too?
- 114211, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0Does this mean my cable tv providers will have to switch back to the TV Guide channel? Good.
- glalonde, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1titantv.com works well. No xml version though. What about windows MCE? Assume it uses a valid zap2it login to get the data. Possible to find out what that is?
- fatdog789, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6MS pays a licensing fee for their service, so it will not discontinue on MCE boxes.
- hadak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4so. for all the years i've been trying to scrape together hardware, software, and knowledge (and finally got everyhting working just fine) they're discontinuing it? son of a bitch.
- Pilot85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6But...but... I finally got my mythtv box to work like I wanted...
*****.

- Riffraffs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2www.snapstream.com
- jark, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9This sounds like a great service / add opportunity for Google. Offer listings that are search able with adds on the sides along with a feed for Mythtv and others to use. Seems at least good enough for a beta right?
- scootinger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I think that Google should start developing their own (partially ad-supported) PVR software. It wouldn't be a bad idea IMO; maybe they could buy out SnapStream (makers of BeyondTV) or SageTV.
- Notyavgkat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7screw them check out meevee......their better anyways
http://www.meevee.com- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what is their source? is it zap2it by chance?
i noticed they do offer a free RSS feed, will mythTV work with RSS? - durex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not seeing anywhere you can actually use this with MythTV or MediaPortal....
- prohammer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've been using MeeVee for awhile, works pretty well and you can add favorites and everything which appear at the top of the listings.
- jmcantrell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2there are a ton of listing sites... i think the problem is that none of them do XML feeds
- postaldave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what is their source? is it zap2it by chance?
- lavant, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0screw them I already pay thru the DISH NETWORK I guess I was paying and it didn't count ...
thinking about switching to DIRECT TV IF they aren't zap2it shop...
Piss on the little guy....
do they have to have EVERY NICKEL and i am all for profit but how many times do i have to pay for the same service.
???
guess i will just do the leg work from the tv to the box and set time and date and channel myself from ZAP2it()DISH NETWORK) and IR blaster it..
or buy a competing service...
: ) - WalkaWalka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3
Odd.. I thought they made all videos available on demand for free, using HD v3 GreenRay Flash Cache they upload to your hybrid in free parking zones. And deposit credits to your Viza account for actually watching them.. if you have time for that. Donating plasma takes less time.. can't they just stream me the entertainment they know I'd like? We've got to get the word out to everyone!! - EricTheGrey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I used Zap2It years ago, when I didn't want to pay for a TV Guide or paper. Since getting Dish, I've not had to use it. Still, it's sad to see it go.
What needs to be done, is for someone to devise a scheme to acquire the information and pass it around, in bittorrent fashion. Each client doing part of the work, and passing it along.
Or perhaps, I'm insane. You decide. :)
EtG - Nomad64, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Get the word out!

I have been a MythTV user for years...and I would even be willing to pay a small fee for the service.

- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Cool, now maybe I won't have to hear all the pretentious Linux users talk about how MythTV is the greatest thing that has ever been invented. You might actually have to pay for something that you use!
- ddrucker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Canadians are now effectively without any listing service whatsoever. Zap2it was the only source for Canadian television listings on the Internet in xml form. Now we'll have to return to the days of checking stupid web pages for everything. Really pathetic.
- scootinger, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Does this affect SageTV users? I have a SageTV box at home (living away from home right now) but I don't recall how SageTV got its programming info. I thought Zap2it had something to do with it in some way - is Sage one of Zap2it's commercial customers or something?
- torxx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2zap2it banned a forum user complaining when they went down they downed their myth-used feed a couple of months ago. I would like to see them explain 'abuse' because methinks they mean free support was a pain.
- blackoper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2EIT data for 24 hours will still be available for every channel you have that will get pulled by your hardware worst case scenario. Also the mythtv main devs are in negotiations with zap2it right now to see what alternatives they can offer. The sky is not falilng yet people. We have some pretty smart people involved in opensource media distributions that will band together if another alternative needs to be found.
- gewf631, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The GBPVR folks are all over this already

This is quite the popular service, and since it won't go down for a few months, there's a lot of time to see if someone else steps up to the plate -
