Steve Carell Signs For Three More Years of The Office!
slashfilm.com — Today the angels looking down on Scranton, Pennsylvania are crooning “Beers in Heaven.” Steve Carell has signed on to star as Dunder Mifflin’s quasi-top dog, Michael Scott, on NBC’s The Office for three more years. An understandably elated, Ricky Gervais, broke the news on his blog…

- mojaam, on 06/26/2008, -5/+278So in other words, there’s at least 3 more seasons of this wonderful sitcom because I can’t imagine The Office without Steve Carell.
- Kinnkster, on 06/27/2008, -29/+3You must have a weak imagination.
- Roger, on 06/27/2008, -33/+4Doesn't anyone else think his character ruins the office?
Michael Scott is much better suited to any other run of the mill sitcom.- mizatt, on 06/27/2008, -2/+17No... his character makes the office
- richbleak, on 06/27/2008, -2/+13He is easily the best thing about The Office. You are way off on this.
- IglooBurner, on 06/27/2008, -3/+8Freaking awesome show, just too bad its not on iTunes anymore. Well in my opinion, its more of a Michael / Dwight / Jim interaction than just Michael himself. Its their balance that makes the show so funny. I think Michael, by himself, would be a bit too much.
- Tippx, on 06/27/2008, -6/+2The office is still on the pirate bay, i think they have better prices
Edit: meant is a reply to IglooBurner - treedude, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1Have you actually watched the show?
- c0baltfish, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I disagree, but I do admit I wish he got the job in Corporate for a few episode to see how Dwight would've ran things.
- jlmillstein, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1The office went to ***** somewhere around when Ryan became the boss and Jan's character totally spun out of control. Try the UK version.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 06/27/2008, -10/+58The office without Steve is called The Office and it airs on the BBC.
- panic, on 06/27/2008, -26/+11And it's full of annoying brits
- diecastbeatdown, on 06/27/2008, -1/+10well, it used to air on the BBC. loved that show and at first was very skeptical of the nbc version. especially when they just out and out copied the first episode line for line. but it was interesting to hear the american verbiage. now i've grown to like this show and it is hilarious...
still i was much more connected to the british version simply having watched it first. Ricky Gervais went on to make extras which was pretty good, but nowhere near the same. - CCB0x45, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9Yea but that had Ricky Gervais, who is equally as tight as Steve(actually I like ricky better, but steve is awesome too). The office without ricky or steve would suck on either side.
- CCB0x45, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7@diecastbeatdown... I think extras was great, some parts of that are ***** hilarious, his agent is one of the best characters ever.
- quomen, on 06/27/2008, -2/+10I love the show. Season Four was waaaay too short. Another season of the Office can quell my anticipation for the Arrested Development movie next year :D
- Soave, on 06/27/2008, -3/+6It's like the Webisodes. Decent, but severely lacking.
- heliox, on 06/27/2008, -3/+4Just like your reply...
- RaulMuadDib, on 06/27/2008, -11/+9He should stick to the office show and not make any more movies
- bobangitanov2, on 06/27/2008, -15/+1Sorry, the office is for people who do not have a sense of humor. Steve said he's only doing it for the money.
- boombye, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2I suppose you have a sense of humor. Give some examples of what's humorous to you. That would be interesting.
- over9k, on 06/27/2008, -3/+20This is the main difference between UK and USA. In UK they end the show on its high even if it is extremely popular. In USA they drag it on and on and on, milking it for every drop they can get.
- OGTK423, on 06/27/2008, -3/+11The US version also blows the drab UK version out of the water in every facet of production.
- poxonyou, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3Not to be pretentious, but some countries treat comedy dramas like extended movies that have a set beginning and end (similarly, drama stars may be bigger than movie stars if the film industry isn't as important in that country). If the first one was extremely popular, they make a sequel. In the US, shows are usually completely episodic. You can easily have your final episode whenever ratings are bad as any loose ends are usually resolved at the end of each episode.
This is OK if the show is extremely well written and enjoyable, but often times the show just becomes part of your weekly routine. If you go back and watch every episode on DVD, you'll probably quickly realize how repetitive and dull the show was, which you don't realize when you see it once a week. There are some comedy dramas that are episodic, but have some continuing story line in the background, like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. - Soave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4I'm fine with that. I'd rather have decent episodes than no episodes.
- acitcratnA, on 06/27/2008, -1/+16How many Schrute bucks are they going to pay him?
- Trav3133, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2more like 3 more years of people diluting themselves into thinking this show is good. its not good and its ok to admit.

David Brent > Michael Scott
Sorry, but it's true.- awtripp, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4yes, the UK (original) version is ***** hilarious. The episode where they are all sitting in a circle with the sensitivity trainer or whatever, and David Brent pulls out his guitar is ***** classic.
***** description, but if you've seen it you know what i mean. and if you haven't seen it, then it is of no concern of yours other than to go watch it. - saikyan, on 06/27/2008, -2/+6"David Brent > Michael Scott"
Don't apologize- you speak the unpopular truth! In fact, the American version is an elaborated imitation of the original. It has its good points, but the original is a masterpiece.
That's not the popular view on Digg, but everyone I've known who's taken the time to really appreciate the British version has come to understand this.

- mlrigsby, on 06/27/2008, -8/+52Good move for Carell who has proved himself to be much better on TV and in supporting roles than carrying a feature film.
- xsecretfiles, on 06/27/2008, -5/+37WTF?
Ever seen the 40 year old virgin?
Miss little Sunshine??
The man is a good, he just happen to pick a bad film this year...- mlrigsby, on 06/27/2008, -3/+6Yeah, I guess I meant to say that he doesn't have great range for films. He's great on The Office, but he just always seems to play the same character and it gets kind of grating.
- masti1234, on 06/27/2008, -6/+4Ok, and you mean Get Smart was a bad movie?
I haven't laughed so much during a movie in years. It was absolutely hilarious and Steve Carell acted very well. I don't understand how Get Smart is a bad film. It is an outstanding film in most respects. - jefferygomer, on 06/27/2008, -0/+10Same character? Maybe in the only movies you've seen him in. His character in "Dan in Real Life " is vastly different than 40-Year-Old Virgin which is vastly different than Michael Scott.

- Roger, on 06/27/2008, -4/+1Umm... no. Gervais played an idiot. Carell plays a retard. Big difference.

- antihighstbass, on 06/27/2008, -30/+26While i like the UK version a bit more, i do enjoy the US version. But 3 more years? Is quality not even relevant here anymore? They're just going to churn it out, endlessly. While many look at this is a positive, I look at it as a negative, because we all know that money is the most important factor and the story will suffer. I'm sure they'll throw in some minor conflicts for Jim and Pam, but I can't see this show being even watchable in 3 year, they're going to have to water down the story, so in the 22 minute episode, very little will happen that actually effects the story.
- max1018, on 06/27/2008, -4/+12What do you expect, I suppose. At least we knew in the UK when to put it to rest.
- antihighstbass, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6exactly, the UK version lastest 2 series and then did an extended two episodes to wrap it up. The quality of each episode was high and it will leave a better memory than if it was dragged out, because it definitely could have been, and they could have made alot more money. But Gervais and Merchant knew the quality would suffer.
- loobis, on 06/27/2008, -1/+31I think Seinfeld really started to pick up steam around Season 7 with The Soup Nazi, The Calzone, The Invitations, and Season 8 withThe Summer of George, The Comeback (The ocean called...), etc.
The Office has been going for 4 seasons. Lets have a little faith that it might not suck in another 3 years.- antihighstbass, on 06/27/2008, -17/+5I personally thought Seinfield never got going. Seinfield gets my vote for the most horrifically overrated show.
- cvindustries, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I think you're close with your comment, but if I may counter - Seinfeld is a great example of the creative arc for most shows. It takes a few years to get going. Most shows are at their best in the 4th season, and can hold it through the 7th season. I would argue that Simpsons, Seinfeld, Frasier, ER, and most post-Cheers developed shows fall in that category, and can sustain it for about 3-4 years before original writers leave and ideas start to dry up.
- gapingass, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6Seinfeld didn't have a contituing story line that it had to follow for 8 seasons. Every episode, for the most part, was independent from all the other episodes.
- kraftj, on 06/27/2008, -3/+1Money being one of the most important factors actually is good news for viewers... More money = better writers = better actors = better show.
- antihighstbass, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I'd have to strongly disagree. Money being the main motivator will mean that they want to deliver as many episodes as possible, regardless of quality. So they will continue the show until the ratings drop off, and then cancel it. Meaning until the show hits rock bottom it'll be dragged out. As I said, they will need to deliver many episodes, which will ultimately dilute the story line.
- Khanvalescent, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5Its a character-driven series, not plot-driven. Remember Seinfeld? Ten years of nothing happened on that show, and it was great until the end.
I would prefer if the office did cut back on a few of the long story arcs (especially the romantic ones).- Hypermarkalan, on 06/27/2008, -3/+2I'd argue that Seinfeld was not character-driven. The characters didn't really change or progress in any meaningful way, which is where most of the comedy derived. Seinfeld was more a comedy of errors or a farce, whereas The Office US began as a character-driven piece.
- lafan313, on 06/27/2008, -2/+3Pompous blokes from the UK who know how to do everything. What a surprise!
I remember when they announced the US version, UK fans were screaming that it would absolutely blow.- boombye, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Of course. One Brit was even offended today on here about some article that said "American Gladiator" because he thinks the rest of the world invented it before us. We got the show starting in 1989 and the UK didn't get it til 1992 and this guy is offended at the name of the show which was started here. They're pretty pompous indeed, think they're owed everything. Go read the comments at majornelson.com, just a bunch of wankers demanding and claiming they're not getting what they're owed.

- AlphaCrow, on 06/27/2008, -16/+52I'm worried about The Office in general... some of the plot lines are getting too much like a soap opera. I don't want to see romance and drama, I want to see witty, stand-alone episodes about individual situations.
- xtinamo, on 06/27/2008, -6/+9Even from a girl's pov, this romance ***** sucks. I seriously don't care about fictional love unless it's mostly naked, or accompanied by hilarity.

- laserdog, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1From what I heard the writers had to ax their original plot line due the writer's strike disruption.
So hopefully this next season will be tighter. - Ubergoober3, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Agreed.
- Twenty, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2It has been a soap opera! God damn, fairly recently, I saw that I had an episode recorded on Tivo. It was the episode where Jim reveals that he is going to propose to Pam. Oh my god. What a horrible episode. I mean, the beginning was funny and all. What was really depressing was Michael's date with Pam's landlord. Just, wow. I felt pretty bad afterwards.
I'll give them credit because the first few seasons were really good, and some of the episodes after they began the drama were funny, but, jesus. Enough is enough. I much prefer Scrubs, makes me laugh pretty hard sometimes. And it's up-front with its serious subjects, and has been since the beginning.

- bbqsalad, on 06/27/2008, -3/+4Yeah the next episode should be really good! Left us on such a cliffhanger.

- bashnu, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Pam & Jim need the flirt for that extra edge, now it is simply too perfect to be true.
Hope they develop it in a worthy way, not simply relationship fight thing. - J3TTY, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4OH D

- stukdog, on 06/27/2008, -4/+14Steve is perfect for The Office. I just hope they keep things in the office more often. It seems like every episode has to have a great deal of it filmed outside of the office which kind of takes away from the show. Even with that though, it's a great show.
- Soave, on 06/27/2008, -0/+17Agreed. I prefer an episode like Diversity Day over Beach Day. However, The Dundies was one of the best episodes ever.
- petebot, on 06/27/2008, -0/+17It's better than them having a party every other episode.
- thegools, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6Yeah, every time I decide to tune in it's an office/party and Michael is on the mic making a jackass of himself. Carrell deserves this is for nothing else than just making crappy writing funny.
- dafragsta, on 06/27/2008, -3/+2Man, you guys miss the point. They are trying to create elements that working stiffs can identify with. In real life, you play golf to make sales, and if your boss is a big dork, he might do things like request parties all the time. How many places have you worked where there was actually a "party committee," or a "fun committee?
- FatBird19, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3Yeah, but this stuff doesn't happen EVERY DAY OF WORK like it did in season 4. :0

- quomen, on 06/27/2008, -0/+13I'm eagerly expecting the Olympic Ping Pong gold and silver medals to be won by Mose and Dwight, respectively.
- ReadVonnegut, on 06/27/2008, -2/+20Well, in case no one noticed, we're already four seasons in aaaaaaaaannnnnnnddd Jim and Pam dating is about the only thing that's happened that really pushed the plot forward. As slow as the ball is rolling, I think they can handle 3 more seasons. I mean, this past season was the best so far, so why not.
- ElAmo, on 06/28/2008, -3/+1Nah, the season premier (in season 1) was by far the best. It's gone downhill (only a teeny tiny bit) ever since.
- hddigger, on 06/28/2008, -2/+3Yeah, this season was great. My favorite moments were "Dinner Party" when Jan was dancing to "That One Night" and grabbed Jim's hand, and "Night Out" when Toby put his hand on Pam's leg, and then announced he was moving to Costa Rica, then proceeded to jump the fence and run off.
- punwin, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2how the hell can Toby putting his hand on Pams leg be your favourite part? That was awkward as hell. Its aaalllll about season 2 man.
Every episode in S2 is win.
- punwin, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2how the hell can Toby putting his hand on Pams leg be your favourite part? That was awkward as hell. Its aaalllll about season 2 man.
- petebot, on 06/27/2008, -1/+57Toby better not be gone from the show when season 5 starts, or I will hurt someone.
- kraftj, on 06/27/2008, -0/+20I think he's gone for good. When Pam (Jenna Fischer) was on Leno she said they were losing a cast member this season (4). Toby was the only one announced off on the show, so it seems he's the cast member she was talking about.
- petebot, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
- mrburgundy, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4it could also very well be ryan, who is now is prison.
- juckman, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I doubt that, considering that the guy who plays Ryan is one of the writers of the show.
- ElAmo, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3That doesn't mean he has to continue acting on it though.
Besides, Michaels Toby hate is one of the best parts of the show. - ballsjohnson, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2isnt toby also one of the writers?
- Argy, on 06/27/2008, -0/+35Paul Lieberstein left the show as an actor, but he is still a writer and recently was promoted to executive producer. I remember hearing a commentary or interview or something where he said he wasn't even acting when he played Toby.
In any case it seems like they are setting up Holly to be a new main character.- tommyrocksout, on 06/27/2008, -0/+14Aww, I know. Toby and Michael's relationship is hilarious.
- Lingur, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4I ***** love Toby. He's the best. The deep, deep, acidic hate that Michael has for Toby is the funniest thing I've seen...
- SphinxatUF1, on 06/27/2008, -0/+4"Goodbye Toby....Its been nice...."

- kslodic, on 06/27/2008, -0/+10Who thought it would be hysterical to give Toby a rock for his going away gift?
- kevinwiz, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6You did Michael, you made me wrap it.
- kraftj, on 06/27/2008, -0/+20I think he's gone for good. When Pam (Jenna Fischer) was on Leno she said they were losing a cast member this season (4). Toby was the only one announced off on the show, so it seems he's the cast member she was talking about.
- BigPhil1982, on 06/27/2008, -10/+1The English (original) version is fantastic, I think this one has same writers and I'm definitely going to watch it soon (hopefully).
Steve Carrell is so different to Ricky Gervais and it'll be interesting to see how he pays the part.- antihighstbass, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3This version is not written by the same writers, its obvious. The UK version was much less reliant on physical comedy, and screaming. Steve Carrell is good but he seems like a child version of Ricky Gervais. They also threw the whole idea of the show being passed off as a documentary, by using Steve Carrell. I enjoy the show, but this will not end well.
- bashnu, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I had the same opinion, then gave in. Once you stop comparing, it is great.
(my girlfriends get uglier too)
- mikeramone, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Stoked on Aziz in the office spin-off. Off to a great start with casting for that one.
- AlexandraF, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3May the office live on!
- datdamonfoo, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7What's with the extra commas in the headline? "Ricky Gervais" needs no commas before or after.
- mlvassallo, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I dug you up because you are correct. There are comma-splice errors all through that article.
Example: "John Singleton, give him a call, no joke" Why the comma before "gave him a call"? If you are going to write something for the masses to read at least get somebody to proof read it first. This isn't somebody being a grammar Nazi. These errors are blatant and annoying.
- mlvassallo, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I dug you up because you are correct. There are comma-splice errors all through that article.
- chicken59, on 06/27/2008, -8/+1Too bad they should've stopped after season 3. It still has some funny moments, but it's getting old. I can't even imagine how bad season 6 will be.

QUESTION: what is better than 3 more years of the office?
Answer: eternity more years of the office, duh.
and who just watches the show for Pam? thats creepy and weird...Dwight is all that is man. oh and i'm kinda excited for his movie The Rocker even though nothign can compare with the character of DWIGHT SCHRUTE...ha!
i also sometimes send myself faxes from future me.- pigducksheep, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2wait what?
- Sunflare670, on 06/27/2008, -17/+2I don't quite understand why people obsess over this show. I have tried watching it before, and I just don't find it funny. Overrated, imo...

Do not drink the coffee.
Signed,
Future Dwight. - petethepanda, on 06/27/2008, -10/+7The Office US continues to be a good comparison piece of British TV comedy vs US TV comedy.
In the US, shows don't simply tell their story and then get out, that doesn't sell, the thing that does sell is trying to milk as many seasons out of an idea as possible.- dustinhansen, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4Agreed. That being said, the show has kept up its quality so far... we'll see if it has legs to go that much further.
- diggduggDOOM, on 06/27/2008, -5/+0What kind of bear is best?
- AbdullahAbuDawu, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5The joke-has-already-been-made bear
- vicesco, on 06/27/2008, -12/+1/sigh... 3 more years... The show is ok and all, but the english version was insanely better. It was on for 2 seasons only, got massive ratings, and is still remembered today as a cult classic (even though it was on the BBC). The american version started out also pretty funny, but is going on way toooo long.
With every sitcom in this country, we can't let a popular thing go out on a high. We have to let it age and dull and get as many dollars from the brand as possible, until it finally dies in the gutter and is ridiculed by masses on digg. Why is it that in american sitcoms, co-workers have to develop complex, unfunny relationships with each other that revolve around a soap opera level of viewer-attachment. After a few seaons, characters always have to get married (which always leads to a ***** marriage special), have kids, go through hardships, blah, blah, blah, until finally we as viewers wake up and think, 'WTF am I watching. This is show is complete *****!'.
Sorry for the rant. I'm sure a few of you Ofiice Fanatics will blast me, but fcuk it, it had to be said. - hagfish70, on 06/27/2008, -11/+4Meh. Show should off ended at season 3. Season 2 and 3 were great, but now it feels like the jim/pam thing is played out and the jokes are pretty much rehashes of jokes from pervious episodes. But I guess that's par for the course with american sitcoms.
- ChantryChantry, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2you, my friend, are wrong on every level
- hagfish70, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2No, you just like bad television.
- NipGrip, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1No, you just have very, very low standards for humor. *fart* Now go die laughing at that.
- ChantryChantry, on 06/27/2008, -1/+2you, my friend, are wrong on every level
- gcacho, on 06/27/2008, -7/+4Hmm, does that mean they'll bring aboard Ted McGinley pretty soon? It's inches away from jumping the shark.
- vagabondproject, on 06/27/2008, -10/+4Probably a good idea considering his movies are total sh*t.
- phorty40, on 06/27/2008, -0/+73Ryan: Did this happen on company property?
Michael Scott: It was on company property, with company property. So, double jeopardy, we're fine.
Ryan: I don't think-- I don't think you understand how jeopardy works.
Michael Scott: Oh, I'm sorry. What is, 'we're fine'?
Who doesnt love this show? Im going to give my Michael bobble head an extra bobble tonight.- derble, on 06/27/2008, -0/+17That's what she said.
- scarysnow, on 06/27/2008, -2/+14Why would anyone suggest they stop at Season 3? Then wait another 10 years for a sitcom to be even watchable?
- OropheR, on 06/27/2008, -20/+3Keep in mind that "The Office" was originally a British serie. And the American sitcom is only a pale imitation of it.
- phorty40, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8Ooh , those are fighting words.
Although i agree the british version has charm it just doesnt fit right with me.
The american versions humor is more up my alley , in a sense , less ..dare i say..dry. - SuperSunny, on 06/27/2008, -1/+10Sorry, it WAS a pale imitation the first season. Afterwards it completely went on its own route.
- laserdog, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6Yes, yes, the British version is supreme, or whatever.
Doesn't change the fact that The Office is one of the most reliably funny shows on American television. - kevinwiz, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3I don't give two ***** what the british version is like. I like my Office right here in America, I couldn't care less if the british one even existed.
- tnoy, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Thankyou, Captain pretentious-*****..
- phorty40, on 06/27/2008, -1/+8Ooh , those are fighting words.
- villageatheist, on 06/27/2008, -16/+4Season 4 should really be the last, play out this Jim/Pam relationship and end the show at its peak.
Also, the UK version was better. There were more laughs in those 14 episodes than in the 66 US episodes. -
