- AJdude123, on 06/13/2008, -1/+1It's the Prince of Dubai that's paying for this. He figured that since his oil supply was running low, he should look to the future and create a city that thrives off of tourism.

They can build all the buildings they want but they will never become a serious tourist destination with the laws they have.- RobotBuddha, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Don't forget that you can also be tossed in jail for even bringing vitamins in. Or even just having a bit of residue from them on an article of clothing. It's an interesting place, but I wouldn't set a foot in there until the chances of being randomly thrown into jail drops.

Isn't there a total ban on alcohol and beheading for drug possession? I'd imagine the sex trade would also be highly restricted. Why would you go to a boiling hot dessert unless you're able to sin it up like it's 2034? - DarthTurducken, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Yes it's so exciting to see what they're doing with our gas money :(

- LoveYouSomeEric, on 06/12/2008, -3/+4I hate to spoil your baseless statistic-creating fun, but I will anyway. From the CIA Factbook's entry on the United Arab Emirates (Dubai being a part of the UAE), "despite largely successful efforts at economic diversification, nearly 40% of GDP is still directly based on oil and gas output".
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world ...- Crashwithuhk, on 06/12/2008, -4/+1So in other words, less than half.
- t3hSLR, on 06/12/2008, -2/+1Dubai being a part of the UAE and using that in light of oil revenue statistics is like saying Rhode Island makes money from oil because Alaska's got some. Dubai's revenue comes from trading, unlikely as it may seem.
- Ryan166, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3No wonder all the companies choose to go to Dubai. They have suck low taxes there, like in the Jebel Ali Free Zone. - seabass341, on 06/11/2008, -8/+55How to make your own Dubai skyscraper:
1. Gather several billion dollars from foolish investors.
2. Make a catchy name. Try using "Dubai" and then a really simple description of what you are making. For example, if you are making an condo make the name "Dubai" condo. This name format seems to work for half of the buildings being built in Dubai, it should work for you!
3. Begin construction on your ridiculously unpracticle building, completion date 2020 (more like 2030!).

Many projects are going to be completed by 2012. I am just waiting for the Metro to be built by next year, it will ease the traffic. Our trade deficit is what's helping to build those resorts ;) - d3vmax, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4Yea Dubai hardly gets it's income from Oil. Even if you bothered to check the wikipedia entry on it you would know. Most of the income comes through the free trade zones and tourist (they hope to get more money through investments in their infrastructure so in the long term they get more money by putting Dubai on the global map with projects such as these and attracting more visitors) But then what do I know.. I just live in Dubai while you are far away prob. in the US and assume that it being a desert arab country it gets all it's money from the Oil you buy.
That reminds me of another common statement made on Digg, "Thats our oil money". Well you are using that oil to get your work done in your country, you can't have it free. If I buy a product of the USA and I have to pay it to USA, which will use it to built it's infrastructure.. that is not a crime!

- hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -6/+46I love how everyone's busy sucking Dubai's ***** over OMG HOW GREAT!
The place sucks. Traffic is horrible, they haven't developed any infrastructure to go with these huge projects, rent is sky high, noone is living in half of these finished projects because they're too expensive, the monopolistic internet provider is restrictive (blocked Flickr before, blocking Skype now), and the city is infested with hookers. It's also built off of investments from Saudi and Kuwaiti oil money. The place will go bust eventually, since the growth isn't sustainable. As it is, they've just got a hell of a PR company.
Now, as much fun as the hooker infestation may seem, getting propositioned by some Ethiopian chick while you're walking through a mall gets old, fast. The real fun is with the older, married, expat women, or the Saudi chicks who go there there to get railed. Giggity!- encrypteduser, on 06/12/2008, -2/+16We apologize, the comment you are attempting to view has been blocked due to its content being inconsistent with the religious, cultural, politcal and moral values of the United Arab Emirates.

I never saw any hookers don`t know which part of town u went to, Rent was decent again don`t know which part u went to, they actually put in a law that they must finish project when building. Plus whats wrong with oil money u make it sound dirty all that building is actually doing good for the economy all the migrant workers coming in working, spending money in the country, resources being used to actually build a city.
- hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -0/+6The hookers have had to range out a bit since they closed Cyclone down.
The problem is they're not building a city. They're building buildings. Cities have infrastructures, Dubai's is *****. It's not that the projects are unfinished, just that noone can afford to live there. So you've got extremely expensive real estate purchased for speculation that's expensive on paper, but unsellable except to rubes that think they're a good investment. This was true 2-3 years ago, but now the easy money is gone.
The majority of the migrant workers (Asians) spend extremely little money there, sending almost all of it home. The Western/Arab expats are the ones who stay there, spend easily half their salary there, then go back home with the other half. Saudis and Kuwaitis are the ones who go there to blow all their cash.
It used to be that Dubai was a great place to go shopping, but now the prices are ridiculous. The airport duty free is an absolute joke. The only thing decent about the airport is still the Irish pub there, which is a great stop for your last bit of swill and swine before heading back to places where it's forbidden. Even with that, I've started avoiding flying Emirates due to their poor service and the disaster that's the Dubai airport. Qatar is a much nicer and quieter transit point.- hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -0/+6I forgot to mention that a majority of Dubai's income is because of it's status as a trade hub. Most of the goods imported into the GCC region pass through Dubai first.

you are not basing your comments on reality.
Your 2nd comment is spot on though- hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Mall of the Emirates food court, over by Papa John's. Suck it, Trebek!
As for Skype:

There are others out there, but these are the most relevant. Etisalat's been trying to block it since back in 2005.- blumpyX, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1lol. I will definitely check out the papa johns next time.
Honestly though - I speak with my sister from dubai on skype weekly - hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1Well, no idea. I've heard from some people there that it's blocked and the news says it's blocked. I'm in Kuwaitistan, where the Ministry of Communications is too inept to ever pull that off.
- hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -1/+1By the way, don't digg blumpy down. He's at least being civil and acknowledging the possibility that I'm right :D

- diggalicus, on 06/12/2008, -0/+0I take it you have been there?
- hobbler, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah. Been there, done that, moved on. No urge to stay in Dubai long term or holiday there again. The bad thing is that their marketing is so good, I occasionally think I should go back there because there has to be something I missed.
Of course, to enjoy it the way they show in the commercials, you have to toss around money like it's nothing.
