- CozmoNz, on 07/20/2008, -28/+11Ah! From me home town! Dunedin :D I remember once trying to walk up it when completely ***** off me head... got to about quarter way... insane fun... that i remember anyway.... I think I was trying to hit people with a shovel that night... (watch out for shovel wielding dunediner's)
- OllyHagen, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Way to make us all look like douchebags!
Btw you should see the cadbury jaffa race they have down Baldwin St.
INSANE!!
- OllyHagen, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Way to make us all look like douchebags!
- gavinhudson, on 07/20/2008, -4/+57Have they compared it with Divisadero where it goes through the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco?? When I bicycle up that street, my front wheel leaves the ground with each forward stroke.
- DelayedEraser, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9I was just in Kingstown, St. Vincent and there are lots of streets there that seemed to be just as steep, if not steeper, than this one... If it really is the record holder, it can't be by much
- johanm, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8Agreed, I live right there and sometimes try (and fail) to run up that bad boy. god damn its steep.
To my knowledge the steepest st in San Francisco is Filbert Street and 22nd Street, they are are two of the steepest in the Western Hemisphere at a maximum gradient of 31.5% (approximately 17°) - screensnot, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10Canton Avenue in Pittsburgh is 20.3° or 37% grade.

- HappyScrappy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Hyde Street between Bay and Chestnut is 21.3 degrees. (stolen from post below). That's steeper than this street in this article.
- whalt, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1The steepest street in SF is Filbert Street but, sorry to burst your bubble, LA has SF beat with 3 steeper hills. Pittsburgh seems to have the steepest in the US and would seem to have Baldwin Street beat strictly by the numbers although I'm sure it's all in how you measure it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filbert_Street_(San_F ... - jasonsalas, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3yeah, all this time i thought it was Lombard Street in SF
- gavinhudson, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2They say that Lombard is the "crookedest" street in the world. However, it's not even the "crookedest" in SF. It's fun though. Esp. when they had that bigwheels race down it.
- edwartica, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Yeah....I would like to find out the slope on this road I traveled in Bali. The driver told us to meet him at the top of the hill because it was so steep that the van couldn't make it with passengers.
- magnus3994, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1What happens when you backward stroke?

- rocksouljah, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8Well i'll say this, its a known story around here that someone jumped in a wheelie bin (trash can on wheels basically), and decided to go for a ride down to the bottom, needless to say it got a bit out of control on the way down, they didnt survive.
from the wiki on Baldwin Street:
In 2001 a 19-year-old University of Otago student was killed when she and another student attempted to travel down the street inside a wheelie bin. The bin collided with a parked trailer, killing one of the occupants instantly, and causing serious head injuries for the second. - edwartica, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Get some of that stuff that Chevy Chase used on his sled in Christmas Vacation. That will make the ride REALLY exciting.
- BTraina, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1I shat my pants when i saw that as a kid.
- udjifudgi, on 07/20/2008, -14/+3"Honey, you did leave the handbrake on didn't you?"
"*****"- saxreturns, on 07/21/2008, -4/+1I've had my car start rolling down a hill with less of a gradient than that even when the handbrake's on. In a manual car (stick shift for all you Americans), you'd probably have to leave it in gear.
- fucknuggets, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2we call it a manual as well.
- RealmDown, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I drive a manual also and always leave it in gear when parked regardless of gradient.

- Kotjze, on 07/20/2008, -2/+8There's a road here in St. John's, Newfoundland that's almost that steep. Downtown St. John's has a lot of steep streets though...
- LOCK3D, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I've walked up and down many of them. After a night out drinking on George St. it sure feels like they're the steepest in the world.
http://shorock.com/nfld/2005/800/P8086357.jpg - N00F, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Leslie Street, where the Labatt's Brewery is, is a good example of a crazy steep street.

- Paranoidmarvin, on 07/21/2008, -9/+2I'm sure they have steeper streets in the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro - just look at the picture:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f8 ...- Mononuclear, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2there aren't many streets in the favelas. Most of the paths are small walkways with stairs. The streets they do have are switchback like streets that go back and forth and aren't that steep.
The favelas are the slums or ghetto of Brazil and most people don't have cars or anything.

- zzt711, on 07/21/2008, -6/+8No, with no doubt there are steeper streets (that's PLURAL) in San Francisco. A number of them so steep that you have steps instead of a normal sidewalk. Notable ones are on nob hill and telegraph hill, particularly one off of broadway (and kearny), that street's like at a 45 degree angle!
- binkitybonk, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2yep. here's a list:
http://www.magazineusa.com/us/cityguide/show.aspx? ...- screensnot, on 07/21/2008, -3/+4None of the streets on that list are steeper than 17.5°.
- tcheard, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1none of those are as steep as baldwin. I live a couple streets down the road from baldwin, and I've lived in San Francisco. You gotta see baldwin to truly take in how steep this street is.
Baldwin St is, according to the Guinness World Records, the steepest street in the world. So much fun to drive down!
- binkitybonk, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2yep. here's a list:
- frase, on 07/21/2008, -0/+17I've walked up it, and yes it is absurdly steep. I was quite relieved to find a drinking fountain at the top!
- Jenadae, on 07/21/2008, -2/+46VTECH JUST KICKED IN YO!
- Shenaniganz08, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1hahah took my comment YO !

- AlexWiggy, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Argh, Hill starts are hard enough as it is, without being basically vertical.
- darkane, on 07/21/2008, -10/+2"This is the steepest street we've ever seen while randomly browsing Flickr, therefore it must be the steepest street in the world."
Not only is this ridiculous and inaccurate, but who ***** cares?- GunOfSod, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Actually it is accurate this is the steepest street, and if you don't care then ***** off.
- lohphat, on 07/21/2008, -4/+11INACCURATE
In San Francisco:
Hyde Street between Bay and Chestnut is 21.3 degrees.
California between Stockton and Grant is 18.2 degrees.
Powell between Pine and Bush is 17.5 degrees.- r4ge, on 07/21/2008, -3/+7OMG AMERICA WINZ!!!
- 22catches, on 07/21/2008, -6/+8You're just counting sections of a street, not the overall gradient of the entire street.
It's like saying that America is the world's flattest country because of the Bonneville Salt Flats.- stev31h, on 07/21/2008, -0/+11the sign in the article indicates it does the same thing. this street is not 19 degrees the whole way
- HappyScrappy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+11Read the fooking article. There's picture of the plaque at the street:
"Initially, Baldwin Street slopes gently from the valley floor, then climbs steeply to its intersection with Buchanan Street at the top.
Over the 168.2 metre length of the topsection, it climbs a vertical height of 47.22 metres, which is an average gradient of 1 in 3.41.
On its steepest section, the gradient is 1 in 2.86."
[more deleted]
So they are only counting sections of their street too. Fair is fair.
On the steepest section of Hyde street, the gradient is 1 in 2.57. That's steeper. - 22catches, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6Yep, fair point. I retract my earlier comment - (although that is how the steepest street should be measured in my opinion)
- lohphat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4More data:
The Steepest Streets in the City
1. Filbert between Leavenworth and Hyde (31.5% grade)
2. 22nd Street between Church and Vicksburg (31.5% grade)
3. Jones between Union and Filbert (29% grade)
4. Duboce between Buena Vista and Alpine (27.9% grade)
5. Jones between Green and Union (26% grade)
6. Webster between Vallejo and Broadway 26% grade)
7. Duboce between Alpine and Divisadero (25% grade)
8. Jones between Pine and California (24.8 grade)
9. Fillmore between Vallejo and Broadway (24% grade)- screensnot, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2So, San Fran does not have the steepest street. 31.5% grade is 17.5° (Baldwin is 19°).
What about Hyde street? That one is supposed to be 21.3°, but it didn't make your list. - lohphat, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Look higher in the thread: "Hyde Street between Bay and Chestnut is 21.3 degrees."
- screensnot, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2So, San Fran does not have the steepest street. 31.5% grade is 17.5° (Baldwin is 19°).
- visionaryIX, on 07/21/2008, -0/+21Whoa, New Zealand on digg? Awesome!
In all seriousness though, if I remember correctly we measured the angle wrong for the world record attempt, and actually overstated it substantially.

- tcheard, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1nah no where near as steep as baldwin based on video
- mrenerstat, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0I agree..Third street is the steepest I've ever been on (I've driven in SF). Car feels like it's it's going to flip backwards and you can't see a damn thing except sky until you clear the top... downright scary!
- howardgrigg, on 07/21/2008, -0/+9Cool - Dunedin on Digg, I walk past this street to go to Otago Uni each day. A few years back two people got drunk and rode down Baldwin inside a wheely bin, crashed into a trailer parked at the bottom and died. It is kinda a sick joke round these parts lol.
- ttait, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1yeah its cool to see dunedin on digg. i used to live around the corner from here
- PhrosTT, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1visited dunedin but tunnel beach is much more noteworthy than this street... weird practically nobody seems to know about it (at least not in the US)
- SecrtAgntMan, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7Sucks for the guy with the angry ex who cuts his brake.
- eers2snow, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I went to baldwin street about a year ago. I was stuck in Dunedin for a few days and was pretty bored so I decided to walk up it. As you may have guessed, it's pretty steep...but I doubt it's the steepest in the world (there are some that are about the same in Morgantown, WV) You can only drive up half way Baldwin St. Supposedly the local university students have a race up and down the hill every year.
- tcheard, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2nah you can drive the whole thing. done it myself.
- jimll, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Every year during the Cadbury Carnival in Dunedin, they hold a "Jaffa race" down Baldwin Street. A Jaffa is kinda like a large sixlet, a chocolate ball covered in an hard orange candy shell. Just last week they sent 30,000 Jaffas rolling down this hill. Check it out at http://picasaweb.google.com/jllauer28/NewZealand/p ...
- PhrosTT, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1i thought a 'jaffa' was Just Another ***** Aucklander.

- iNiz, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Think about all that gas that would require to go up that ....hill....and the stress on your engine. ..Infact, that's probably the best test to see if a used car is worth it, take it up that hill.
- gowerski, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2its not too bad to get up the hill... just have to get up to about 80kmh before you hit the properly steep bit..
