- eggsovereasy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2Chicago was lucky (?) enough to get burned to the ground in 1871, which means they got to redesign it with all the new information they had on city planning.
- m3mn0n, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Yes, because residents of a city are "lucky" when their city is burned to the ground.
Especially if it helps with traffic issues. - DuffyDirect, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1the city would have been redesigned anyway -- they had to elevate the entire place just like portland because it was built on swampy/marshy land
- jtrost, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1What that photo doesn't show you is the enormous amount of light pollution our skyline produces each night. However, it's a fair trade off in my opinion.

- feignNU, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2I think perhaps you have all missed p3ngwin's point...
He was lamenting the fact that the lights are not directed down, and instead that much of the energy that goes into powering them is wasted in lighting up the sky, ie, he was pointing out all the light pollution. He was not suggesting that Chicago would be better without any lights whatsoever. As a resident, I can say I agree that it's a shame that when you look up at the sky at night in the Chicago area all you see is a big red glow.
No idea how light pollution is supposed to be impeding progress though...

- mllawso, on 07/18/2008, -4/+7You've never seen the milky way have you? As little as 5 years ago I could see every star in the sky. Now that all these subdivisions have gone up, combined with the chain stores/restaurants (who leave their lights on 24/7) I can count the number of stars in the sky, and it's less than 30.
/The whole southern quadrant of the sky is a disgusting pink-orange.
//Yes, I plan to move farther north when I have the means. - griz, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1They do, but it doesn't require equivalent brightness to sunlight to accomplish this. People's eye's adapt very well to dim lighting. Overlit areas just perpetuate the problem. Everyone tries step up the brightness of their store or plaza to attract the attention of people. It has become less about that is needed to see and more about what is desired to be seen. That's what's disgusting. Oh and not to mention, all the wasted electricity that lighting the sky represents.
- NavS, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1You're gonna move up north so you can see more stars? :|
- spacerobot, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I went to college in the Chicago suburbs, and only saw the brightest stars. Now, whenever my friends from college visit me in my hometown (rural Northwestern part of Illinois) they are amazed by the stars, even on a partly cloudy night. On a clear night the milky way is visible, and even though I've experienced it my entire life I'm still amazed by it every time. I love Chicago, but the one thing I missed was the stars.

- Lythium, on 07/18/2008, -3/+11I get that reaction every time I fly over a city at night.... On one hand, anything with shiny lights gets an automatic magpie "Ooooo, pretty!" reaction. On the other hand, it just looks cancerous, somehow - I'm far from an environmental nut, but that kind of visual really drives home just how much impact we have on the land around us.

- Kozy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+109The difference between American cities and European cities always strikes me, the way European ones have developed over thousands of years leaves them a confusing tangle (London: http://static.flickr.com/135/327930346_a8e8c93a14. ... ) whilst the more recent (in historical terms) American cities have such a clean grid layout like this Chicago shot
- unAntimatter, on 07/18/2008, -0/+30A very interesting thing indeed, since the Chicago area is so flat, there was no need to build around the terrain as was normal back in when the horse and ox did most of the work.
"The city of Chicago embraced the grid set down by government surveyors of the Northwest Territory, with major streets running straight along the section lines. An editorial in the Chicago Tribune of April 29, 1869, noted that "There is no city where the opportunities for straight streets are so advantageous as in Chicago," and recommended where a street was "twisted out of its straight course, interrupted by jogs, or else abruptly stopped by some unimportant cross street" the flaw should be corrected. "Give us straight, broad streets, running uninterruptedly from one extremity of the city to the other, and through the suburbs ad infinitum, if necessary, in the same manner," the editorial continued. This ability to extend the city's grid, ad infinitum, helped in the rapid growth of the city. Plats could be quickly and cheaply drawn, few irregularities needed to be accommodated, and when Chicago annexed adjacent areas, the parts of the jigsaw fit into the whole with little adjustment. Many areas even adopted Chicago's numbering system, so that a traveler passed from city to suburb without a hitch."
http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/4 ... - Featherlake, on 07/18/2008, -1/+34After the great fire of London in 1666 there were grand plans to rebuild London from scratch with wide avenues, piazzas, the focal point was going to be St Paul's cathedral and the city of London would have been based on a concentric circles. I t would have rivaled Paris, Seville and other amazing European cities.
Unfortunately the landlords would not agree and that is why the city is a ***** mess today.

- RunWithScissors, on 07/18/2008, -0/+14You don't need to go to Europe to find that shot. Try Boston. Same issue there, lack of urban planning, streets built by old cow paths even though it is a pretty flat terrain. And why it might be more interesting from the sky, I can assure you that it greatly decreases efficiency of transportation. It also doesn't help that they Change the name of every street at every new block. Grid is the way to go for an urban environment with high population density, cow paths are fine for more rural areas where efficiency of transportation is not an issue.

- ViperCTW, on 07/18/2008, -2/+3What do you suggest, people never go outdoors after sunset?
- griz, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1How about appropriate amounts of lighting where it is needed and using logical installations of fixtures that don't waste light by sending it into the sky.
- feignNU, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0No you morons, he suggests that we use lights which are designed to direct a significant portion of their illumination *down*, toward the *street*, as opposed to up into the sky where it does jack ***** but turn the sky red for a 50 mile radius and waste electricity.
- unAntimatter, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0I always thought it was more of an orange hue... but I do agree with you, LED lighting needs to be implemented soon. Directional and more efficient (less light needed because it is more directional). Redundant, I know.
- Yookji, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1In order for an object to be seen, light must be reflected off of it and into an eye or a camera. Lamps do emit the majority of their light in a downward direction, but the majority of that light simply reflects back upward.
- feignNU, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0"Lamps do emit the majority of their light in a downward direction, but the majority of that light simply reflects back upward."
This is an empirical question, and hinges, of course, on what the quantification of "majority" turns out to be. Even if current lights emit some decent percentage of their light downward, I'm going to guess that a solution which directs the light more efficiently is possible and that the impact it might have on light pollution would be non-negligible.

- brainscab, on 07/18/2008, -16/+4Cue Liz Phair:
I was flying into Chicago at night
Watching the lake turn the sky into blue-green smoke
The sun was setting to the left of the plane
And the cabin was filled with an unearthly glow
In 27-D I was behind the wing
Watching landscape roll out
Like credits on a screen
The earth looked like it was lit from within
Like a poorly assembled electrical ball as we moved
Out of the farmlands into the grid
The plan of the city was all that you saw
And all of these people sitting totally still
As the ground raced beneath them thirty thousand feet down
It took an hour, maybe a day
But once I really listened, the noise
Just went away
And I was pretending that I was in a Galaxie 500 video
The stewardess came back and checked on my drink
In the last strings of sunlight, a Bridgette Bardot
There's a hat on my headphones
Along with those eyes that you get
When your circumstance is movie size
It took an hour, maybe a day
But once I really listened, the noise
Just went away
It took an hour, maybe a day
But once I really listened, the noise
Just went away - peterjmag, on 07/18/2008, -1/+8Why are some of those smaller grids of lights so uniform, particularly to the lower right of the center of the photo (it's a bit more evident in the hi-res version)? Surely those can't all be side streets with equally-sized buildings. Not trying to cry Photoshop, just curious.
- unAntimatter, on 07/18/2008, -0/+12Those smaller grids of light are side streets, the yellowish orange lights are high pressure sodium street lamps, not house lights.
And yes, they are that uniformly placed.- boombye, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1But why does it seem dimmer than the North side?
- mysedai, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2The south suburban area is more populous than the northern areas. The city really sprawls to the south and east along the lake.
- capnawesome, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1the south side is dimmer because the city doesn't like it cause it's all poor (black) people.
- centran, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1@boombye
When you are on the North side a lot more roads are considered main artery roads. Some of those roads end or are blocked off for awhile then reappear. On the northside there are more street lights because those roads have a high amount of traffic. When you go further South the traffic dies off.
Some might claim it is because it is poorer but it has more to do with population density. The North side is more packed in then the South side.
- asundevil, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Link to the hi-res?

- zooto68, on 07/18/2008, -11/+6No they are not assholes for using lights at light but they are assholes for using lights that are a) not lighting up only the area intended to be lit, i.e. directed light downwards and b) wasting energy. If you can see these lights from high up then clearly a large percentage of their light and electricity is not going where it is intended and is being wasted shining up into the sky.
- jimmies, on 07/18/2008, -1/+9You're an uneducated *****. Most of those lights ARE pointing down, and being reflected back up by streets, cars, you name it.
- RationalXubrnce, on 07/18/2008, -1/+4 Exactly, unless he's found a way to shine a light on something without it becoming visible.

- nirav72, on 07/18/2008, -4/+6Actually a large part of the new Batman movie was filmed in downtown Chicago.

- digitalbuzz, on 07/18/2008, -3/+15That's a suburb. Different lighting system than Chicago's. (North Sider here. Go Cubs.)
- wstokes, on 07/18/2008, -4/+6Sorry, as a South Sider and proud Sox fan I have to dig you down. :-)
- mysedai, on 07/18/2008, -2/+8Dugg for the Cubs' sake.

- SpudDuffer, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5When in Chicago, eat at the Signature Room, it is on the top floor of the Hancock building. The view at night is very similar, not for those afraid of heights though!
- dmbohn, on 07/18/2008, -0/+9I'm more afraid of the $19.50 cosmos...
waitress asked what we would have for our second round.
we replied,
"the bill". - DeQuinceysDiet, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6Nah don't eat at that overpriced and overrated restaurant. Instead go to the lounge a floor above the restaurant, on the 96th floor, milk your $10 cocktail and enjoy the view.

- ObeseSnake, on 07/18/2008, -0/+7Can someone just cut/paste the comments from the previous time this picture was posted on Digg? Oh yeah and make sure you include the Liz Phair lyrics again.
- legendxx, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4The amount of people here crying about wasted energy on lights is amazing. Try setting foot outside in an urban setting like Chicago without light and you'll soon not care about the environment so much.
- marx2k, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2You're the 3rd person to post the same basic comment, but none of you guys have said why that is. Do you mean it's due to a high crime rate?
- legendxx, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Do I have to explain to you the psychology of a criminal? I guess I'll have to for you slow people.
It's been understood for almost two thousand years that criminals would rather ambush a victim in a dark alley rather than a lit area. Very little crime actually occurs under a lighted area at night. Even if no one is around to witness an act of crime the offender would rather not risk revealing his/her identity to the victim. If such a thing would happen the attacker may have to murder the victim to keep his identify unknown... hows that? Do you understand now why lights at night are a good thing? lol...
And if you have a hard time understanding that higher density populations like urban environments are breeding grounds for high crime rates that you're just going to have to figure the rest out for yourself. - marx2k, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2Douche, I asked if the light comments were DUE to a high crime rate (since I don't know the crime rate of Chicago) not why you need urban lighting in a high crime rate area. Reading comprehension is a skill that can be rewarding for the rest of your life. I suggest training the skill.
- legendxx, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Would it really matter where it was? Why do you need to know the crime rate. It's an urban setting with no lights.. ***** is going to happen. You can't count on people always filling in the blanks for you... take a second and try to do it for yourself.
