- 2874 diggs
- digg it
- projectstartrek, on 07/06/2008, -1/+255If you zoom in you can get individual gas station prices...neat!
- megamod, on 07/07/2008, -17/+2who created this infernal website??? please don't remind me how ridiculous gas prices are until next time I have to refuel...hmmm k?
- jblade, on 07/07/2008, -6/+3This is all completely dependent on state taxes.
- ooby, on 07/07/2008, -0/+9If this was the case, we would see no differences in gas prices within a state. The cost of your gas depends on the infrastructure in your area (transporting and refining the fuel), the taxes (a flat fee across the state [most of the time]), supply and demand, and the amount of additives in the gasoline. Gasoline that is sold in a polluted region requires more expensive additives than in less polluted regions.
- DavidBGie, on 07/07/2008, -12/+7Hmmm, the more Democrats the area has, the higher the gas prices. We need more republicans!
- simplysoleil, on 07/07/2008, -8/+6Hmmm, a Democrat doesn't seem to be in office at the moment.
- 5urr3al5am, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1@SimplySoleil -- mind numbing? because Bush accounts for the gas tax difference from state to state? The FACT is the areas where gas is higher are generally democratic states
- 5urr3al5am, on 07/07/2008, -4/+1this is interesting.. it reflects democratic bias on gas
- asskicker32, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4If you zoom in completely, and look just off the coast of San Francisco, you can see that gas prices on the uninhabited islands of The Farallones is over $4.42 a gallon.
- kewidogg, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4No kidding, I wouldn't live there either if gas was that much on an island.
- brainnovate, on 07/25/2008, -15/+174This makes me happy I don't live in CA
- Terr01, on 07/07/2008, -4/+16I wish this map had an option to see the pre-tax prices.
- pakruse, on 07/07/2008, -0/+9Here's a map of average taxes by state - you could mash them together, if you really wanted:

- zenerdiode, on 07/07/2008, -2/+87Actually, it's better to live in CA. Gas is a much smaller percentage of our income
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/06/09/busi ...
Now if you were talking about real estate...yeah...CA sucks.- DangerCollie, on 07/07/2008, -3/+3California has many of the best looking women on the planet. If that means paying a couple dollars more for a gallon of gas, that's a small price to pay my friends. A small price indeed.
- ep53, on 07/07/2008, -12/+5But they have weed. LEGAL WEED!!
- rrife, on 07/07/2008, -18/+12I can think of so many more reasons, besides gas prices, of why I'm happy I don't live in CA.
- evilsin, on 07/07/2008, -1/+9ok such as what?
and where do you live that is so much nicer? - HigherLogic, on 07/07/2008, -1/+19He lives in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I'd rather live in California.
- Spudster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+14They're too progressive and open minded for his liking.

- divrekku, on 07/07/2008, -3/+13Good we didn't want you here anyway.
- edwartica, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2We Oregonians are a xenophobic bunch. So STAY THE HELL OUT!
- timusca, on 07/07/2008, -7/+5Good to be a South Carolinian
- edwartica, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8Uhh, why on Earth would anyone live there?
- TemplarCrosland, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I agree Florence SC here, gas about 3.80ish.
- SilentRamble42, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1My uncle lives in Charlotte, about 2 minutes from SC and drives there to get his gas.
- timusca, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1@edwartica
So they're not a complete dick. I'm guessing you don't live there.
- smrekar, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3The beach, OC and another 5 bucks on my gas(10 gal tank FTW!). I'm not complaining.
- rkiga, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4two days ago i found some $4.39 gas and filled the whole tank which was almost on empty, i was so happy. but with inflation, in the past 15 years, gas prices really haven't gone up as much as it seems.
- NCSD, on 07/07/2008, -2/+2considering that inflation is largely indexed to gas prices, saying that they haven't really gone up as much as it seems is a lie
- sexybobo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I was on vacation in middle missouri last weekend. was filled up my tank at $3.65
- rkiga, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3i'm 26, and i remember when gas at the local station was $0.89-$0.99, now it's $4.59, that seems like quite a jump. but adjusted for inflation, it isn't quite as dramatic. gas prices have gone up since it was updated, but regardless, looking at this chart, i'd say that the statement "inflation is largely indexed to gas prices" is a lie.

- jonnyboy1544, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1It'd be great to see which energy policies those states have.
- UltraDavid, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Sweet, we're getting too crowded as it is, we could do well without ya.
- NOFXY, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1*****, i just saw the map :(
/native californian- atheos13, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1I've actually been waiting for this moment. I'm in Central California and I ride the buses, so at current prices, a monthly bus pass is the cost of filling up a full tank twelve times a year.
- Terr01, on 07/07/2008, -4/+16I wish this map had an option to see the pre-tax prices.
- joshreed104, on 07/06/2008, -44/+74Aw, the only downside to California.
- barfooz, on 07/07/2008, -10/+3I saw a gas station offering $4.39 gas today in the San Jose area. But that was only with a carwash.
Oh well, it was 80º for the high today : ) - blackhappy, on 07/07/2008, -10/+122The only downside. Wildfires, house prices, water rationing and rolling blackouts are a few more I can think off.
- REsplin, on 07/07/2008, -15/+31Rolling blackouts? what is this, 2005?
- ken830, on 07/07/2008, -10/+12Strange... During the rolling black-outs, I was not affected even once...
- blackhappy, on 07/07/2008, -2/+12When was the last state you heard of any state with rolling black outs? I will give Cali props for its mexican food, but that comes with a down side all its own. Also Humbolt gets mad props!
- topgigmedia, on 07/07/2008, -4/+25Nothing better than a Rick-rolling blackout.
- Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -16/+6The people (especially in San Francisco).
- Sapulator, on 07/07/2008, -5/+36A few more downsides to california: its ridiculous gun control laws, its emissions regulations, and the fact that LA has some horrible pockets of poverty that just dont seem right for a first world country.
- kg37, on 07/07/2008, -3/+12You forgot about the constant threat of the Big One.
- sjclovesjc, on 07/07/2008, -9/+1Its interesting to note that the most of LA's impoverished come from Southern states to enjoy a better climate here in So Cal. Check it.
- phufufoo, on 07/07/2008, -9/+2The whole argument about house prices is kinda stupid because, we aren't really spending more for less. We are spending what it is worth. When you buy a 700k house you think its worth the same as a 200k house in the middle of ***** north dakota or something? Nope it is still worth 700k and has a much higher chance of appreciating. You can buy your 700k house and sell it for 700k too. So you aren't losing any money. Just saved up more of it. Oh yeah house prices are determined by market prices. So obviously there is a very large market for houses in cali because ,surprise!, a lot of people want to live here.
Enjoy your 4 seasons of *****! - julianwan, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1You live in snta barbara too?
- fuzzybeard, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2Thanks phufufoo, I shall enjoy my 4 seasons of ***** a great deal!
/*raspberry* - XBSHX, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3@phufufoo I'd rather have my 4 seasons of ***** than your only 2 seasons of mudslides and wildfires.
- danomagnum, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Hippies
- zenerdiode, on 07/07/2008, -14/+22Actually, it's an upside. We get paid a ***** more than people living in areas with the lowest gas prices.
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/06/09/busi ...- blackhappy, on 07/07/2008, -4/+10Yeah but things cost a ***** load more also!!!
- Sapulator, on 07/07/2008, -2/+11You're wrong, look at the map that shows the percent of income spent on gas prices. The lowest is in NJ. And NJ residents for the most part are better off than cali residents.
- fulibs, on 07/07/2008, -12/+6Liberal logic.
- popfrogs, on 07/07/2008, -1/+9It's called standard of living, it's higher out there. You get paid more but things cost more so there's no win.
- Tinkered, on 07/07/2008, -2/+5Fulibs: "Liberal logic"
What does that even mean? Logic is logic. Maybe you mean "liberal reasoning"? - caramba420, on 07/07/2008, -3/+6yes fulibs, logic has a inherent liberal bias
- joebaloney, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I make under $70k/year, own a 3 bedroom house in a nice neighorhood and my wife stays home with my kid. How about you?
- zenerdiode, on 07/07/2008, -2/+0Aren't we talking about gas prices here?
You get no argument from me about the sucky real estate and the high costs of living here in general. I'd personally rather live in a mansion in Austin, TX than a condo in Oakland. But, like I said, at least the one small upside is that gas costs so little for us, cause we get paid a ***** here.
- thatsmyaibo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+16I say the cost of living and crime (here in L.A.) are pretty bad too. I just paid $4.67/gal for gas in my area.
- agenthamsta, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Well crime is relative to where in LA you live. I pay a tad more just to raise my daughter in a safer area. But I see that as a priority that I consider before other things when I choose a place to live.
I'm not saying anything won't happen but it's less likely in part of town than say Watts or Compton.. - thatsmyaibo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1@agent
Crime is spreading like a wild fire. I live in the West Valley (West Hills) and since I've lived in what used to be a beautiful area has slow become worse and worse. - lintmonkey, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1So stop pillaging your neighbors.
- klipseracer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1i pay 4.50/gal premium
- agenthamsta, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Well crime is relative to where in LA you live. I pay a tad more just to raise my daughter in a safer area. But I see that as a priority that I consider before other things when I choose a place to live.
- mike17032, on 07/07/2008, -16/+5Only? *****, Mexifornia is a joke.
How are those million dollar garage sized houses treating you? Or your almost bankrupt state government? Or the highest sales tax in the country? Or those rolling blackouts and water rationing, hell its like a 3rd world country. Or the awful gun laws, along with the other socialist *****.- drastik21, on 07/07/2008, -1/+83rd world country?? And yet it's still the richest state in the Union, and like the 10th richest in the World.

- Monkeydew06, on 07/07/2008, -12/+5Yes they are.
- mrbungleface, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5Having lived in Florida and California...
I must say, Florida takes the stupid cake. lol
id pay 10 bucks a gallon before I move to any other state outside of Ca...... I love this place for more reasons than one..... Gas is chump change compared to the stupid that lurks outside of this state..... stupidity hurts more than gas prices lol... im just saying - KMartSheriff, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5I can think of 49 other states that contain an equal, if not greater, amount of *****.
- caramba420, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1*****, huh? Maybe you'd like to read this little excerpt from the Swedish Consul's site:
"Since WWII, California has been the state in the world with the highest number of Nobel Laureates, reflecting the array of excellent universities and scientific institutions located here. Glenn Seaborg won the Prize for Chemistry in 1951 and Linus Pauling won the Prize for Chemistry in 1954 and the Peace Prize 1962, just to mention two of the outstanding California scientists who have been awarded the Nobel Prize."
"The total number of Nobel Laureates associated with the University of California, including Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego and Irvine, is 40 out of which 23 are still alive.
In addition, there are 27 Nobel Laureates associated with the California Institute of Technology, Caltech, of which 14 are alive, and 23 Laureates associated with Stanford, of which 15 are alive. Finally, there is one Laureate at the University of Southern California (USC). Added together, California's various scientific institutions have produced about 90 Nobel Prize winners."
Who's a ***** now? - Monkeydew06, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1I have no doubt in my mind that California can ATTRACT smart people, but how many of those people mentioned are Native Californians? You do realize California is ranked in the upper 40's when it comes to public education (K-12th grade)? Due to overpopulated school, crappy teacher salary, poor test scores, poor facilities. California may be nice to those who have already established a life, but raising children their is a horrible Idea. The funding for children's schools is not a priority. In addition, the pollution and over population is a recipe for immune deficiency's. I personally would not touch California with a 30 ft. pole. Take is from someone who has lived in California, Oklahoma, Connecticut, Colorado, and Arkansas (so I've seen most spectrums of US living).
- nnagflar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1That and LAX.
- s000t, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2"And now, the worst appears to be over. Last night's smug storm… has left thousands homeless. All across the Midwest, people are picking up the pieces. Cities like Denver and South Park are heavily damaged, but still all right. However, San Francisco, I'm afraid… has disappeared completely up its own *****."
- c1rcasurv1ve, on 07/07/2008, -1/+1I'd rather pay $4.50+/gallon for gas than shovel all that weird white crap out of my driveway that some of you guys get every winter.
- Monkeydew06, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1You'd rather pay more for gas to not have snow? Dang... I love the snow...
I'd rather pay $3.80/gallon for gas than breath in your putrid air, deal with your horrible traffic, or give up that white crap I get every winter.
Fact- Where I live, you don't need to shovel snow, it only gets about a foot deep, whoopty do!
- Monkeydew06, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1You'd rather pay more for gas to not have snow? Dang... I love the snow...
- msheidi, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0Calif charges WAY too much for everything cause we have way too many welfare reciients living on the dole. Illegal aliens sucking off the govt teet. The moneys gotta come from somewhere and it is out of every working persons pocket.
- barfooz, on 07/07/2008, -10/+3I saw a gas station offering $4.39 gas today in the San Jose area. But that was only with a carwash.
- dougvfr750, on 07/06/2008, -6/+38Supposedly the higher prices are taxes to pay for roads.... yeah supposedly
- liljerk, on 07/07/2008, -0/+16maybe that's why our gas in Oklahoma is relatively cheaper and our roads completely suck ass
- Zenham, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Have to second that.
I drove cross country this year and Oklahoma's section of I-40 was the worst interstate I've ever seen... and it wasn't that it just had bad patches, it was 200+ miles of "bad patch" at one shot. Think I put 2 years worth of wear and tear on my vehicle in that stretch alone.
- Zenham, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Have to second that.
- steppinrazor, on 07/07/2008, -0/+10The higher gas price in California is due to the additive that must be added to our gasoline to keep the air clean.
- pakruse, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3The additive doesn't help, but your gas taxes are 25 cents per gallon higher than the national average:
http://www.api.org/policy/tax/stateexcise/index.cf ...
- pakruse, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3The additive doesn't help, but your gas taxes are 25 cents per gallon higher than the national average:
- INTERNETMASTER, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6here in texas the trend is to pay for roads with toll stations on highways. the money has to come from somewhere.
- yeti22, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Oklahoma, too.
- JayD16, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4That would be a total nightmare on LA highways.
- soupdawg30, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2It seems to work too. Low gas prices in Houston and constant highway construction.
- Cyberpoop, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1No way, dougvfr. If anything, U.S. infrastructure is crumbing do to LACK of funds to maintain it properly. Not only was this subject is covered here:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7137552/
and was reported as well by NPR (audio):
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ...
Besides this, gas prices are rising all over the world, a fact that wouldn't make sense in light of your idea that high gas prices are do to local, U.S.-based taxes. In fact, only about %10 of the cost of gas is due to tax fees.
Incidentally, you *are* being heavily taxed, but not in what you pay for a gallon of gas...your tax dollars are primarily paying Federal debt and funding military programs.
- liljerk, on 07/07/2008, -0/+16maybe that's why our gas in Oklahoma is relatively cheaper and our roads completely suck ass
- hakkola, on 07/06/2008, -15/+8Stop complaining. Up here in oil rich Alberta we're paying 5.69/gallon for regular fuel.
It's not tha bad, I spend about $4.50 on fuel per day, which is pretty cheap. Sure, it would be nice if it was cheaper, but that isn't bad at all.
Cool map though.- Ricky81682, on 07/07/2008, -2/+16That's taxes for you folks. We just have a worthless dollar.
- blanketfury, on 07/07/2008, -2/+6I don't know about worthless.
Personally, I think they make an excellent substitute for toilet paper.
- blanketfury, on 07/07/2008, -2/+6I don't know about worthless.
- Ricky81682, on 07/07/2008, -2/+16That's taxes for you folks. We just have a worthless dollar.
- Synova, on 07/07/2008, -0/+146Missouri and South Carolina are hiding something. -.-
- Perk, on 07/07/2008, -0/+43In Missouri it's a combination of low state excise tax (17 cents a gallon compared to 26 cents / gal across the river in Illinois) and the 10% ethanol mandate they passed a couple of years back. The cost of ethanol hasn't risen anywhere near as sharply as has gasoline, so that 10% formulation is saving somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15 cents a gallon.
I live in Illinois, but work in Missouri. Gas is immediately 25 to 30 cents cheaper just for crossing the river. Needless to say, I fill up in Missouri.- Yez70, on 07/07/2008, -0/+21It's also illegal to raise taxes in Missouri without voter approval. A few briliant politicians actually came up with the idea back in the early 90s.
They haven't been able to raise cigarette or gas taxes for 15 years now. Nobody votes for tax increases, given a choice.
You can still buy generic cigarettes for $15/carton in Missouri. I live in Michigan where they are about $48/carton for generics. Gas is running around $4.16/gal lately. - jspegele, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2NY also has the 10% ethanol mix and it's not helping us. I paid $4.35 this morning.
- McSwankypants, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7Being from MO, I was curious as to why gas was so "cheap" compared to most other states, so I found this quick article:
http://www.slate.com/id/2193222/
Not only is it due to what Perk said, but apparently quite a few pipelines run through the area, not to mention barge traffic along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. - ooby, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7That ethanol has a lower energy density, by the Watt, it's actually more expensive.
- JayD16, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3""It's also illegal to raise taxes in Missouri without voter approval."
Isn't it strange how *THE PEOPLE* have this odd idea they can do better by holding onto their own money than they can by handing it over to the politicians. This should be reflected in our laws - DAMN woodhead wilson and his instigation of the income tax."
Just a little reality check:
California is the 10th largest economy in the world. We're doing something right... - soupdawg30, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2California has a nice deficit I hear. Something right indeed.
- Yez70, on 07/07/2008, -0/+21It's also illegal to raise taxes in Missouri without voter approval. A few briliant politicians actually came up with the idea back in the early 90s.
- kingp, on 07/07/2008, -1/+13South Carolina has no gasoline tax (look at our road conditions for proof), plus most gas is mixed with Ethanol. The roads may suck, but it sure is nice having low gas prices.
- rrife, on 07/07/2008, -5/+1Wait for a hurricane to hit and have FEMA pay for the road repairs.
- popfrogs, on 07/07/2008, -2/+6Ethanol-mixed gas is actually lower quality and inexplicably, costs the same. I avoid stations with Ethanol mixes, it makes my Infiniti's exhaust stink and it burns like *****.
- skipdog172, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Ethanol-mixed gas sure doesn't cost the same anytime I have looked. It is always cheaper. That is too bad your car cannot handle Ethanol. Mine can!

- popfrogs, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1@skipdog: My car can "handle" ethanol, but it doesn't like to. Why use substandard fuel if you can avoid it anyway?

- Perk, on 07/07/2008, -0/+43In Missouri it's a combination of low state excise tax (17 cents a gallon compared to 26 cents / gal across the river in Illinois) and the 10% ethanol mandate they passed a couple of years back. The cost of ethanol hasn't risen anywhere near as sharply as has gasoline, so that 10% formulation is saving somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15 cents a gallon.
- OffPiste, on 07/07/2008, -68/+4Nice!! The people getting screwed the most are the blue states, home to 99% of all libtards. There is some justice in the world after all. Karma sucks bitches.
- zenerdiode, on 07/07/2008, -4/+26Actually, the people getting screwed the most are in the red states. More of their income goes to gas.

- Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8I was surprised, as many of you were, that someone like OffPiste even knows how to use a computer.

- megncourt4ever, on 07/08/2008, -0/+03.79 gas. A good but temporary reason to be glad i live here.
- shondell, on 07/07/2008, -1/+24Looks like us people living on the West Coast are getting ***** by the prices more than the rest of you guys.
- Samo89, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3explains why all the hydrogen pumps are being built there
- Epistaxis, on 07/07/2008, -11/+2No, because a huge number of us own hybrids. Or bicycles.
- crownedgriffin, on 07/07/2008, -4/+6I live in Oregon, and I'm not hurting yet. I wonder how much it adds to the price of our gas having to pay some high school drop out to pump it for us.
- lantza, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0NJ also has laws against self-service pumping but the price there is (relatively) low. Other factors are likely to blame for Oregon's high costs.
- ryanwarnersteel, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4I live in Oregon too. The other day it was taking so long for the attendant to even get around to me that I just said "***** it, I can handle this" and the attendant said she could report me to the police.
WTF? I'm doing your job for you and you still get paid, and you bitch at me?! - Aadain, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4I'm in Oregon as well. And to everyone who keeps saying we need to do away with attendants to drop the price: it will only increase the profit margins for the gas stations and do nothing for the customers. They know they can charge $4.29/gallon with attendants, so why not without attendants? Demand is not predicated on service, so they will just pocket the salaries they would have been paying. At least this way, the high school drop outs and immigrants have jobs instead of standing in welfare lines.
- TBBucs, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2^ Exactly, so we might as well keep the attendants around so that I can chill out in my car and let someone else do the work :)
- mike17032, on 07/07/2008, -9/+3The morons out there always overpay for everything, this is nothing new.
- wattersm, on 07/07/2008, -7/+2The ***** themselves with higher gas taxes and CA requires their own special blend of gasoline which costs more to make.
- jspegele, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3Anyone have a heat map of Hummer sales? I'd bet that would look very similar to this one.
- *jooloop*, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Actually, there's more Priuses (?) than Hummers out here in SoCal, by several factors.
- NOFXY, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1jooloop, i've noticed the surge of them too. starting to see a lot less hummers on the road now.
- kpne1home, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1CT is number 2 and just barely below you so it's not much better over here.

- Mier, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1And yet your state government runs at a deficit. So much for that economic engine.
- trunkster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Bush just doesn't want to make the people around him too pissed off. Keep those red states red.

- clarkd, on 07/07/2008, -20/+10Well, I am truly saddened by your abuse of logic. Gas has gone up to ridiculous highs and all you can focus on is how the wealthier people in the wealthier states are getting hit with slightly higher gas prices than you. Don't you understand that it is ok to have differing opinions on things, and if you take that out of the US you will have destroyed part of the very foundation of what the US stands for.
Also, I do agree that Karma sucks, because if anything the spike in national gas prices was caused by the actions of the republican president you most likely voted for...so much for your logic.
P.S. In regards to your other posts. Stop being a moron about what it is to be a coward, because in my eyes the cowards are the people who just want to wipe every tiny threat off of the face of the earth without any real effort to reconcile with them.- Tripacer9999, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Protip: He was talking to OffPiste.

- Tinu, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4Don't know how I feel about the rest of what you said, but this was hilarious, "Well, I am truly saddened by your abuse of logic." I'll be stealing that in the future.

- Spudster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I love when Americans bitch about gas prices. They have no idea how good they have it and they take it all for granted. Taking a look outside at the pump here in British Columbia, Canada after the gas tax, I'm paying $5.29 a gallon. ($1.40 a litre). And gas is considered to be relatively cheap here compared to the rest of Canada...
- Tripacer9999, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Protip: He was talking to OffPiste.
- lebsoljah, on 07/07/2008, -4/+33In Montreal gas prices are about $1.45 a litre (~$5.80 a gallon)
- h4ppydotcom, on 07/07/2008, -15/+11Yes, and in England it's more than £1 a litre ($8 a gallon) and has been well above $5 a gallon for several years. Life goes on, so just stop whinging about how much it costs to fuel up your car and get back to work :-)
- Kanten, on 07/07/2008, -3/+16England is a FRACTION of a faction of the size of the US, the culture and transportation system works entirely different from the US. Leave your comparisons elsewhere.
- popfrogs, on 07/07/2008, -4/+1God damn, I knew a Euro would chime in with a comparison like "we've been paying 18 euros per gallon, stop your whining" eventually.
VAT and high fuel taxes != expensive fuel. Talk to your local governments about that European-wide 15% tax on fuel if you're mad...although none of the protests by shippers and commercial fishermen have changed anything yet. - gl77, on 07/07/2008, -8/+4OMG.....and in Dubai....its 45 cents per gallon!!!!! OMG!! and it could be that cheap here too if we could just drill the untapped resources here! stop bitching about gas prices! most of you who are bitching are driving big ass SUV's and trucks and go on long ass driving trips on the weekends, you're part of the reason why gas is so high right now. a portrait of america's ignorance and addiction to fossil fuels.
- Spudster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5While you can argue British don't have it bad because they live in a small country, you can't say the same for Canada. We live in the second largest country in the world and many of us are separated great distances that require vehicles. Gas prices outside are $5.29 a gallon here. ($1.40 a litre). For Canada, that's considered CHEAP.
Americans really need to begin to appreciate what they have. They take it SO for granted it's frightening. - popfrogs, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1@spudster: "Americans really need to begin to appreciate what they have."
What, a lower tax on fuel? Yeah it's wonderful...I guess.
- Kvasaari, on 07/07/2008, -10/+7More than 8$/G (1.4 €/litre) here too. Poor USA...
- Alexcarrier, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1At least our electricity is incredibly cheap, and 95% renewable!

- coldshuts, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1You guys from Europe are the other side of the sea. We are US neighbors and we get screwed up by paying 50% more than them.

-Frank Herbert - notoneofus, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6Biodiesel is a fine idea, as long as you're dealing with waste oils or sustainable crops that are not adding to the global food crisis. Are you thinking about ethanol?
- bluezinc, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4Very clever Zanna, unfortunately FTW does not mean, "this and nothing else".
However, if I were to become an electric car nazi and were to express this viewpoint on digg, then your comment would be poignant. - OrangeCrush, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1And as soon as there's an electric car with a power source with comparable range, power, size and weight as a tank of petroleum they WILL win.
Sadly, we're not there yet. - ZannaDiosa, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Sorry, bluezinc, I assumed.
- Mazrin67, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0Electricity has to come from somewhere. Most of our electricity comes from generators.
Guess what powers the generators... - bluezinc, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1@Mazrin67
That's the other point, solar energy, wind energy, etc. We're on the cusp of all of this and if we had the motivation we could switch all our power over to solar and wind within the next year.
My point is, generators don't HAVE to run on gas.

- WhoDoneIt, on 07/07/2008, -5/+73Wahhh... I pay nearly $6 a gallon here in Canada and you STILL pay less than I do, even though the gas you are using is most likely from my country and yet closer to me.

- Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+17The gas prices in the UK go up the more I read down these comments.
- secrity, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7The UK prices depend upon whether they are talking about a US gallon (as on the map) or an Imperial gallon, which is 20% larger than a US gallon.
- BedPost, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Most of that is because of taxes.
- Ravatar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2How many in the UK drive 30-40, even 80 miles one way to work? Some are forced to do this due to the cost of living.

- Ravatar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Cigarettes in NYC are about $8 to $9 a pack due to taxes, gas is roughly the same (+/- .15) and food is more or less depending on where you get it. I agree its more inflation than anything.
- 808ethan, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Wow, where are you getting the $4 gallon milk? Its $5 here. $8,50 if you dont buy the store's brand.

- bluezinc, on 07/07/2008, -14/+10It seems like the states that don't like Bush pay more for their gas with proportion for hatred of Bush to price per gallon. Weird, huh? It's a good thing Bush has no connections within the oil industry or else this would be fishy!

- UTPinky, on 07/07/2008, -1/+12Eskimos don't use gas. They use dog sleds to go everywhere, which I guess would mean everything is kibble-powered... MUSH! MUSH!!
- SolidBones, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6What do Hawaiians do? Surf?
- maddonkey, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4Nah, they walk it only about two blocks side to side.
- *jooloop*, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2@SolidBones: Duh!
- christuckeruf, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3Having just come back from visiting Alaska, gas must be shipped after refinement and the price per gallon is between $5 and almost $7. It would be "Black" on the map. I found it ironic that a place that produces so much gas is itself gas starved. The good news is that most areas are sparsely covered by roads and almost none of the cities interconnect with a road system. The bad news is that the main transportation is by boat or plane and they take gas.
- Malevolant, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2As someone who lives in Alaska you have some holes in your facts. We are not gas starved, since we do not run out of fuel. The cost of living is very high in Alaska, and that goes for gas too. You can drive from south central Alaska to the north slope, by road of course. Alaska is two and a half times the size of Texas so figure out the mileage there. We have a bunch of outlying villages, but our main, big cities, i.e., Anchorage, Fairbanks, Palmer, etc. are all connected via normal roads. Actually you can drive so many places, to so many parks, etc. that it's hard to not drive some place new. Our main transportation is not by plane and boat. For villagers, maybe, but for the average person, not even. For those who need to travel to Juneau, out of state, or for off the beaten path fishing/hunting trips, they use planes and boats.
To summarize, we do not live in some antiquated, archaic, undeveloped, godforsaken, state. It has everything most other states have, although we have a lot of dense wilderness, the cities are normal. Please don't spread misinformation about a place you only visited.
P.S. In the big cities gas is around $4.36 as I write this, not $5-$7 as you quoted. Outlying areas are another story, but the most expensive outlying area I've seen was $5.69 for diesel. - 808ethan, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I drive my car on coconuts so no worries!
- UTPinky, on 07/07/2008, -1/+12Eskimos don't use gas. They use dog sleds to go everywhere, which I guess would mean everything is kibble-powered... MUSH! MUSH!!

- Sonderiaom, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Go to the costco, it was 4.25 the other day.
- LondonV, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I go to school there WWU, thankfully i don't have to drive because the public transportation is great, But i think i saw one for around 4.80
- tikited, on 07/07/2008, -9/+1WTF other states, every state should be equal, i live in CA. f**k old bush
- h4ppydotcom, on 07/07/2008, -2/+7Why should they all be equal?
- CosmicJustice, on 07/07/2008, -1/+10State taxes, idiot.
- wattersm, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5Bush has nothing to do with it, blame your state legislature.
- robdazomba, on 07/07/2008, -12/+2Gee the irony! The dumbass, inbred states who were most instrumental in putting Bush and his oil-lovin' cronies in power are the ones who generally have lower prices while the "blue" states have higher gasoline prices. It ought to be the other way around.
- twomeyw23334, on 07/07/2008, -1/+4I guess it just works out that the dumb asses who vote for higher taxes or for those who traditionally raise taxes end up paying more for gas, go figure.
- SolidBones, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1"It ought to be the other way around."
Says who? No one owes you anything you self-righteous *****.
- bevel, on 07/07/2008, -8/+37£1.19 per litre here in UK; that's $8.89 per US gallon! Am I winning? Am I winning?!?!
- robdazomba, on 07/07/2008, -12/+16You also have lots of social services paid for which Americans do not so it balances in the end. Don't be smug. Just because gasoline has been apparently cheaper in the U.S. doesn't mean this isn't hurting people, *****.
- defaultdigger, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2oooooohhh!!! handbags at dawn!!
- voleur, on 07/07/2008, -5/+20They can charge you more because you don't use it as much. You can take trains/subways instead of driving 45 mins to and from downtown every day like many of us do. Not to mention city to city trips... I have to drive 800 miles round trip several times a year and it hurts! You Brits are lucky you're so small and have public transport!
- bevel, on 07/07/2008, -0/+12@voleur: I also make several city to city trips a year: London is 600 mile round trip. I don't leave Newcastle each week but I still spend over £40 / $79 on petrol. Believe it or not it's cheaper to drive cos the trains are so extortionate. (Newcastle - London is £99 / $195 return!) Just because the UK has smaller area doesn't mean the distance from my house to work or the supermarket/convenience store is any closer that the US.
@robdazomba: I guarantee you that I'm not feeling smug about it!- voleur, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Ok, I see your point about city to city transit. I didn't think about how often people would chose driving over trains because of high ticket costs.
What about local trains? I'm not as familiar with UK transport, but I remember coveting the RER trains that service the Paris suburbs in France - bevel, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Much of Europe seems to have a decent train service at a reasonable cost. Prices of local trains in the UK aren't too bad but national trains are ricockulous! Leave London on a weeknight before 6pm and you're paying £249 ($492) for a standard class return to Newcastle! Was amazed at how cheap and well run trains in Italy were - why do we pay so much?
- voleur, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Ok, I see your point about city to city transit. I didn't think about how often people would chose driving over trains because of high ticket costs.
- DaviDaviDaviD, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Not if you want diesel. It's nearly £1.30 where I live.
- Greengoo, on 07/07/2008, -10/+10Dear England,
Hi! Can we trade the dollar sign ($) for the pound sign (£)? I feel like your currency abbreviation looks cooler. You can have the colonies back if you want, we don't like them anyway.
Sincerely, The United States- McHoffa, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2just because it's the most educated state doesn't make it better.... i'd much rather live in countless other places before MA, but maybe because it's because I am not as educated.
- SolidBones, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3Yeah, but you people drive tiny cars.
- Nayson, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2The reason we drive tiny cars is because fuel is so ***** expensive.
What is the average size of engine in an American vehicle? 4 litres?
- Nayson, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2The reason we drive tiny cars is because fuel is so ***** expensive.
- elperegrino, on 07/07/2008, -1/+2currently 1.98 times (we'll call it twice) as cool.
- matu4251, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2The problem with gas price in the USA is the rapid increase, much quicker than in europe. So sure it's still cheaper but it impact every day like at little harder... plus the american way of life was partially build on cheap gas.
- robdazomba, on 07/07/2008, -12/+16You also have lots of social services paid for which Americans do not so it balances in the end. Don't be smug. Just because gasoline has been apparently cheaper in the U.S. doesn't mean this isn't hurting people, *****.

- Phil28, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1buried for being a moron
- thegodfaza, on 07/07/2008, -6/+4A friend in britian says it's £1.20 / litre which comes out to $7.00 a gallon.
- buryyourhead, on 07/07/2008, -3/+3their cars are also a lot better than ours
- Spudster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Canada is ranging from $5.30 to $6 a gallon too. Unlike Britain we have long distances to drive still and in many rural areas lack effective public transportation networks.
- IgWannA, on 07/07/2008, -3/+18So if Britain was on that it would be white hot.

- danibobanny, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Aw, don't sweat not being popular. Popularity is overrated. You were just ahead of your time.
- VodkanLemons, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1this ***** is old either way
i've been using gasbuddy.com for years - kevinwiz, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1don't worry it's a useless tool anyway. the only good part is the part that actually tells you gas prices in your area. who gives a ***** how much people in other states pay
- skyrien, on 07/07/2008, -1/+15its all in the title... "California burning..."
- IHaveAnIpod, on 07/07/2008, -2/+7dammit, i just had to be in the state thats blood red on this map
- BebopBlues, on 07/07/2008, -0/+31The finny thing is 5 years ago, you wouldn't believe that 5 years later you would be saying, "Wow, $3.74 per gallon, that is SO CHEAP!"
Can you imagine if 5 years later, we'll be saying, "Wow, $9.74 per gallon, that is SO CHEAP!"- BaronSamedi242, on 07/07/2008, -1/+20What do you mean, "if"? The prices now are for gasoline that's been refined when it was $85 or so a barrel... now it's $146 and climbing.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED - schultenick, on 07/07/2008, -3/+4no the prices are for the $146 a barrel because of speculation
- ShadowFox06, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Speculation isn't the only reason.
The output levels of oil is the same since 2005. I'm pretty sure the demand for oil WILL go up within 3 years. - Ravatar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3I'm more sure demand didn't go up 300% in 3 years.
- ShadowFox06, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Speculation isn't the only reason.
- leopardflames, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3i remember when i first started driving and $10 would fill a little more than half a tank...
- Ravatar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4I started driving when gas was around $0.79. 10 bucks would damn near FILL the tank. I'm sure some of the older diggers here have it even cheaper.
- leopardflames, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1i believe it was around $1.65 when i started driving. crazy that it's jumped this much in the past five years...
- McHoffa, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1$1.20 or so when i started driving.... then it jumped down to $0.89 back in 1998... even in Sept 04 it was still only $1.75... and we were all complaining that it had gone up so much
- form3hide, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Yep, I saw .73 when I first started driving... pretty insane
- pooty2, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I remember when I got my model T. Gas was only $-2.50. The good old days.
- ooby, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5There's nothing finny about it.
- sightlol, on 07/11/2008, -0/+0You don't have to wait 5 years.. Just move to norway, the gas here is $9.81 per gallon
- BaronSamedi242, on 07/07/2008, -1/+20What do you mean, "if"? The prices now are for gasoline that's been refined when it was $85 or so a barrel... now it's $146 and climbing.
- ttfnRob, on 07/07/2008, -9/+25Anyone seen a global version of this? That'd show you guys in the US how good you've got it...
- SteelChicken, on 07/07/2008, -7/+43only europe and japan pays more, but they have better mass transit and are far more urban than the US is. But hey, dont let facts cloud your mind.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/07/2008, -4/+5Thank you.
There always has to be some idiot who comes in here screaming "In the UK we pay (whatever double digit number they feel like typing)!! Be happy you've got it so good fat american pigs blah blah blah".
- KMartSheriff, on 07/07/2008, -4/+5Thank you.
- nox42, on 07/07/2008, -2/+10Actually, there's a Canadian map here: http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_can_gastemperaturemap.a ...
Price in Vancouver: 5.58usd/gal. (from 1.50 cad/L). The *cheapest* temperature on the canada map is 4.8usd/gal.
So, cheer up Americans!- Ravatar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Okay, now lets see how much of your monthly income goes to unavoidable transportation costs.
- McSwankypants, on 07/07/2008, -0/+10Don't forget to thank your government for taxing the living ***** out of gas!
- nebbo, on 07/07/2008, -3/+1The gas companies' "profits" are far outweighed by the taxes the government collects on each gallon sold. And the government doesn't even have to do make or sell anything!
- Kyan, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4Because if they didn't tax it, there would be ***** living in your gasoline! And that can't be good for your spark plugs.
- coudboule, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3374/worldgaspr ...

- whensaturnrings, on 07/07/2008, -2/+3Oh yeah, totally. Americans are spoiled and when it came to building where we live, incredibly stupid. Only some of the big cities have efficient public transport and that is limited to the cities. If you'd like to go anywhere else, drive or fly. Our railways are a joke.
- Ravatar, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Agreed, I wish we had long distance bullet trains for cross country trips. Acela is looking good on the east coast but it's only regional.
- merrickx, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Wow, you need to visit some overseas countries. Stupid in building where we live? At least we put roads in before houses unlike 90% of the countries I've been across the pond. Our road systems are amazing compared to just about everywhere I can think of certain exceptions to a few European countries. Our railways are a joke but everything else is incredibly efficient towards what is used most... individual transportation.
- SteelChicken, on 07/07/2008, -7/+43only europe and japan pays more, but they have better mass transit and are far more urban than the US is. But hey, dont let facts cloud your mind.
