Starbucks to Close 600 Stores!
activerain.com — I'm not the biggest Starbucks fan, but I was surprised to read that the company is planning on closing 600 stores (8.5% of its total stores). It looks like the economy is to blame for Starbucks misfortune, but I wonder if Starbucks shares part of the blame...

- jflowers45, on 07/02/2008, -0/+9I would say any 'non-critical' business would have a hard time right now, and premium coffee is one of those.
Then again, eating out anywhere is pretty much non-critical.. - ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+6nearly 10% seems high but it simply means they'll be on every OTHER block.
- romans7and8, on 07/02/2008, -0/+5Hey, Maybe it would be a good time to open a discount premium coffee business? All those Starbuckaholics are going to need someone to give them there fix. What do you think?
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0There's not really such a thing as premium coffee.
The coffeeshop market is people with false needs. They don't want a coffee, they want to sit in a pretend european café, overlooking a highway, eating a doughnut.
They can get real good coffee for 50 cents from any other place. They want the inaccurately named 4 dollar coffee that comes from the european looking place.- romans7and8, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Amen Brother!
- DuffyDirect, on 07/03/2008, -0/+1didn't realize saratoga springs overlooked a highway (or the forbidden city for that matter...)
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0There's not really such a thing as premium coffee.
- FlForever, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Didn't someone say what this world needed was a good $.10 cup of coffee?
- warpedchaos, on 07/02/2008, -0/+4i dont care since i do not like coffee of any kind, but sucks for those losing a job.
- aislinnmarie, on 07/02/2008, -2/+0Their coffee is bitter anyway.
- omnithought, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Lewis Black must be jumping with glee.
- ginestony, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I dont understand why they need to cut back when a freakin cup of coffee there is nearly 5 bucks.
- Britney90210, on 07/02/2008, -1/+2That sucks! I love Starbucks.
- Haoie, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2That was bound to happen with the level of market saturation they had.
I feel bad for those about to be laid off, though. - yolicks, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0There actually putting up a new one by me. It'll be the 5th one within 5 miles from me which is weird b/c i heard they weren't opening up any new ones in the first places. I don't think I'll miss losing one or two.
- favoriteshare, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1I am in starbuck .I am sorry to hear that ! WOW!
- D14BL0, on 07/02/2008, -2/+2There is currently a Starbucks in my pants.
And no, it isn't closing down. - Alphateam, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2It won't be SO bad for the employee's. They can just go work at the Starbucks across the street.
- gubatron2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Maybe the stupidly high redundancy level of Starbucks in cities like NYC has to do with the closing of those extra 600 stores. In many places you can see 2 starbucks on the same street, on the same block.
- azAZ09, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Starbucks damaged public enthusiasm for their brand when they started building them in rest stops on the interstates, putting kiosks in supermarkets, and placing their coffee on grocery store shelves beside average brands. There is such a thing as too much growth and market saturation. It also does not help that people now have to choose between a 4.00 to 5.00 gallon of gas, or cup of expensive coffee.
- sHockz, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1down with starbucks. that ***** place needs to leave this earth with its overpriced ***** coffee. Most ignorant americans dont know what good coffee even tastes like.
- romans7and8, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0Spoken like a true ignorant non American. Well done. Very insightful information.
