- stonebear, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3During medieval times, and the renaissance, monasteries often did very good side business as inns and hostels. Also, it allowed peasants (and later tradesmen) to get permission to travel by calling it a pilgrimage. Of course, there generally was an actual spiritual aspect that made it both legitimate and desirable, and an opportunity for the poor, or penitent to pay with service without shame.
