If it's not then you continue buying on a regular basis. That's what reduces your risk. Pick two dates ten years apart and look at the DOW's value on those two dates, then tell me you would rather not have invested on the earlier of those two dates. (see comment)

I guess the headline is assuming that one's 401(k) money is completely in American stocks. Diversity is the key, and spreading one's portfolio to include foreign companies is part of diversification. Anyways, one does not lose until they sell. bubbagum … (see comment)
