People tend to read the articles on reddit - and therefore comment. Digg is biased towards user popularity - so articles submitted by the top users get dugg without being read. Digg is more of a game for many (see comment)

What? No it didn't, America became an independent nation because colonist didn't want to continue sending their money overseas because of taxes. Freedom of religion was never really a core issue. (see comment)
