Honoring the War Dead? On "My Triumph Lasted Till the Drums"

Comment in News (2 diggs, 0 replies) - 6 hr 41 min ago - by ashok
Yup, you caught on to the logic of this poem exactly. "You can't stop what has already happened" means that the past has to teach us, but the only way to open the door to the past is to reject the present. What's happening to her in the first stanza - t … (see comment)

Lessons From 40 Years of Education 'Reform'

Comment in News (2 diggs, 0 replies) - 16 hr 13 min ago - by ashok
Anyone who wants to learn is more than welcome to talk to me, and if I don't know where you should go for good questions and answers, I'll find someone who will. Education begins with a will to learn. That's what is lacking in quite a few of us. There ar … (see comment)

Honoring the War Dead? On "My Triumph Lasted Till the Drums"

Comment in News (4 diggs, 0 replies) - 16 hr 42 min ago - by ashok
The first time I breezed over this poem, that line caught my attention too - the personalizing of future and past with "taste," and the idea that the future and past are only what we see/delineate ("spect"), all packed in that line - I mean, that's as goo … (see comment)

Fairly typical behavior by the media nowadays. There was a Washington Post feature, I think in several parts, about Gary Condit. They did everything possible to avoid mentioning he was a Democrat. (see comment)

Why go for Mercedes Benz when we can make our own Vehicle ?

Comment in Images (3 diggs, 0 replies) - on 12/01/2008 - by ashok
My friends have made far worse vehicles, and I'm not capable of making a vehicle at all. Voting this up but definitely not intending to put anyone down. The picture itself is funny. (see comment)

Tesla: Only the Rich Can Afford It. Should Taxpayers Back?

Comment in News (2 diggs, 0 replies) - on 12/01/2008 - by Jason McCabe Calacanis
ugh... what misinformation in this poorly researched article. Tesla is applying for a loan not a bailout, and its from a 2007 fund for alternative energy vehicles... has nothing to do with the bailouts. see comment)

The Intellect in Exile: On Yeats’ "Sailing to Byzantium"

Comment in News (5 diggs, 1 reply) - on 11/30/2008 - by ashok
@ David - that’s definitely the impression the narrator gives, but his own conception of mind is curious. He thinks of mind like this: mind makes and crafts, and since there’s an Eternal Maker/Prime Mover, he’s only participating in a greater mind. At … (see comment)

Materialism and Nihilism: "Nothing Ventured," by Kay Ryan

Comment in News (5 diggs, 0 replies) - on 11/29/2008 - by ashok
That's a good one! I'm rereading my commentary and realizing that I didn't quite sketch out where the materialism comes from. It comes from "banks," but it's also in "nothing ventured, nothing gained" - we could take the poem's relation to this statement … (see comment)

Materialism and Nihilism: "Nothing Ventured," by Kay Ryan

Right - that last metaphor hearkens back to the "dominion" granted human beings in Genesis. We're here to maintain the tank, not destroy it. If there are Alligators running wild that need to be destroyed, that's our fault too - we didn't maintain things … (see comment)

Nothing Ventured Kay Ryan Nothing exists as a block and cannot be parceled up. So if nothing’s ventured it’s not just talk; it’s the big wager. Don’t you wonder how people think the banks of space and time don’t matter? How they’ll drain the big tanks do … (see comment)

I think it's more like, religion then is far more politically charged than it is now. Nowadays Catholics vote for pro-choice candidates fairly regularly. Try something like that back in 1860 and see how long it'll take for your house to burn down. I'm es … (see comment)

"My November Guest:" Sorrow, Anxiety and Thanksgiving

Comment in News (2 diggs, 0 replies) - on 11/26/2008 - by ashok
Yeah! Although, winter doesn't have to be death - it can be something incomplete or dormant, waiting for fulfillment/rebirth. I think that's what's going on in Frost's poem. His narrator is aware of Spring, "Sorrow" isn't. (see comment)
