Can Comedy Save the Republic?

ashokashok sent a shout to kpearce   21 days ago
Back in ancient Greece, the comedian Aristophanes made fun of Socrates so well that the charges from his play "The Clouds" became the reasons why Socrates was put to death. Aristophanes saw philosophy as useless and threatening to the rule of law. More modern comedians put everything down thinking they can do no wrong: is this salutary for civics?

Post-Election: A Practical Agenda [for Republicans]

A few practical ideas, nothing earth-shattering, but some that we can even implement on the net right now - i.e. getting candidates to know more voters.

If you get a chance, would love some help with this - it's rare anything I submit gets this many diggs.

Hope you can help with this - the article is rather short, perhaps a good discussion can get started.

This entry is short enough that it speaks for itself.

Can Blogging Aid Democracy? Maybe...

ashokashok sent a shout to kpearce   34 days ago
This is about blogging, and getting more voices represented and heard. The problem is that amongst bloggers that are any good, there's a temptation to sell stuff. Doing that lowers your political credibility. (Notice what is left unstated: whether catering to the lowest common denominator also lowers credibility, even if it gets you control, say, of the Democratic party).

Sorry to bug you with this. I just need all the help I can get - I thought Diggers would be more sympathetic to this, but nooooooooooooooooooo. Unless it says "Bush sucks Obama rules" they can't read it, it looks like.

Nietzsche: “The exhausted are attracted by what is harmful: the vegetarian by vegetables. Sickness itself can be a stimulant to life: only one has to be healthy enough for this stimulant.”

Puff-Piece Features about Philosophy Do the World No Good

This rather obnoxious rant probably brings up, on a larger scale, the issue of our election fervor (the election is a very practical concern), which I admit to participating in. I think one reason why the Founders may have thought we would be happy with no votes directly cast for the President was that they thought we would be focused on the bigger issues. Not just those of day-to-day living, but making sense of our own lives and why we value what we do.
