Amazing Canon 5D MkII HD video footage!

Don't I feel stupid for misspelling 'Pulitzer' in my haste to digg. *sigh* The Behind-the-Scenes footage is almost as good as the film itself. So cool to see how they mounted the 5D to the car, and a crazy hand-held walking shot that came out quite ste … (see comment)

Speed matters. Why don't other sites get this?

I think you're confused about what "my site" is. Maybe you should learn to read first? Or do you really think I have 150,000,000 images around because I'm not an image site? (see comment)

Looking for the perfect DB storage array for your hot Web 2.0 company?
Comment in News (3 diggs, 0 replies) - on 04/28/2007
I'll take your wager. I'll bet Google *and* YouTube *and* nearly any other big web company you can think of is either using internal disks or DAS on their DB masters and slaves. The cost / performance benefit just isn't there with other solutions. Be … (see comment)

I think you just described almost every "massive" traffic site you can name, including the one you're posting this comment on. Since you're obviously trolling, I think I'll leave it at that. Apologies for even taking a tiny taste of the troll bait. :) (see comment)

@geminitojanus: True that Google uses lots of their own stuff (BigTable, Map/Reduce, SawZall, etc), but they do use a lot of MySQL internally, too. I think they just pick the best tool for each job, and sometimes that's MySQL and sometimes it's not. (see comment)

Try reading the article (and linked items) before you post. :) Paul, YouTube's DBA, has been an Oracle DBA for over 15 years. He ran PayPal's Oracle installation, handling billions of dollars. He doesn't miss Oracle. MySQL is his choice at YouT … (see comment)

We love Xserve RAID, they're fantastic. (We have something like 60 of them). We're not as fond of Xserve, though, for a variety of reasons. (see comment)

Sun X2200 M2 Server Review

For me, it came down to expandability (Sun has 2 CPU boxes capble of 32GB of RAM w/2GB DIMMs, Dell doesn't) and management (Dell's LOM isn't nearly as sophisticated, and isn't integrated). Dell does excel at getting stuff to you fast fast fast, though, … (see comment)

The Enterprise Linux Problem
Comment in News (3 diggs, 0 replies) - on 03/24/2007
Dag Wieers pointed out to me (in the comments on the article) the blindingly obvious solution: I can just buy however many RHEL licenses I think Red Hat is "worth", not even use them, and just use CentOS. Of course, we'll be donating to CentOS too. H … (see comment)

The Enterprise Linux Problem

@schestowitz: There is certainly a very large percentage of companies that *want* support from Red Hat. And that's awesome, I'm glad they offer it, and I'm glad people are buying it. But there are some (unknown number) of companies that can solve the … (see comment)

In search of the creator of the first blog
Comment in News (4 diggs, 0 replies) - on 03/21/2007
Technically, a blog is a "web log" which means it couldn't exist prior to the web (BIX/GEnie/CompuServe/etc don't qualify). But that doesn't mean the article is right. They're not. Blogs have been around longer than 10 years, and Dave Winer's isn't the … (see comment)
