Admiral Mullen urges caution on Iran
news.bbc.co.uk — BBC - It has been clear for some time that Adm Mullen does not want to attack Iran, but his latest remarks suggest that he is fighting hard behind the scenes for both the US and Israel to think carefully about the consequences of an attack before considering mounting it.

- caferrell, on 07/02/2008, -0/+17There is a war going on in Washington that we cannot see. That unseen war pits the diehard neocons (Dick Cheney, in particular, but Dubya also) against the Sec. Def. and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The military does not want to see "Dubya's Big MidEast Adventure Part III". Condi is riding the fence as she is wont to do. The warmongers in Congress (Joe Lieberman in particular) are pushing to open the third front of the Endless War
Let us pray that Mullen and Gates prevail- kemp34, on 07/02/2008, -0/+19The unintended consequences of attacking Iran would be enormous.
- Pssdoff, on 07/02/2008, -0/+16Why do we need to seriously debate invading Iran? This is like arguing whether or not to drink hot lava.

- FrankHope, on 07/02/2008, -0/+6Admiral Mullen warned that opening up a third front, after Iraq and Afghanistan, would be "extremely stressful, very challenging, with consequences that would be difficult to predict".
The consequences would certainly include an oil crisis. Iran would try to block the Straits of Hormuz which is the entry to the Persian Gulf. It might also attack oil tankers as happened during the Iraq-Iran war. Even US warships would be sitting ducks in the relatively narrow Gulf - especially when passing through the Straits. Do you remember the Falkands War when Argentina took out a British warship with one Exocet missile? This is not a good scenario for the US Navy.
Having said that, I wouldn't put my trust in Adm. Mullen. There is a difference of opinion within the Bush Administration on tactics, but not objectives.- caferrell, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Let's just hope that the disagreement about tactics lasts until Jan. 20
