Anti-Terrorism Exercises in China [PICS]
boston.com — Earlier in June, China launched a week-long series of anti-terrorist drills called "Great Wall 5", in preparation for the upcoming 2008 Olympic Games. The drills involved emergency responders, "police forces, the People's Armed Police, the People's Liberation Army and the health, environmental protection, meteorology and transportation departments.

- 2ndrookie, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5I just wish I could hit play on that freeze frame and watch those dudes on the Segways in action!
- bicyclethief, on 07/10/2008, -1/+18Even in full SWAT gear, the dudes on Segways still look like dorks.
- cnot3, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5Who would be riding a scooter down a highway at night?
The Chinese police.- NakedDemon, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0Or Gob Bluth.
- SpongeBad, on 07/10/2008, -1/+14I'm just wondering if those are real Segways or cheap Chinese knock-offs. I can see the instructions now "please to stand on platform and lean to make go forward direction."
- StingingNettle, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3Chinese knock off? Where do yo think they are made! ;)
- hellmit, on 07/10/2008, -0/+10I am personally a fan of the police Bong unit in pic 9.
- alach11, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't recoil be a huge problem if you were trying to fire on a segway?
- billbillbilly, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2yeah knock offs but they aren't cheap and there would be no need to attempt an English translation. they have been made specifically for police patrols, and not picked up from a street vendor
- Lavarock, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4I seriously thought that picture was fake before. What the hell is the point of that?
- KingGorilla, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3War has changed -MGS4

- WyrmSlayer, on 07/09/2008, -11/+5Looks like we're in trouble if the Chinese decide to attack us. They'll sic their police women on us!
- swrostmore, on 07/09/2008, -8/+77anti- "terrorism?" hahahahhaahaha
This is a show of force for anyone who's thinking about criticizing China's human rights policy. The backpack flamethrower is specially reserved for critics of China's cultural genocide in Tibet.- seraph582, on 07/10/2008, -6/+10Let's not forget the anti-terrorist SURFACE TO AIR MISSLES and METAL SAWS. X_D
- Aharoni, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5It actually makes sense to have surface to air missiles. I'm not sure if you've heard of a tiny insignificant event where a bunch of terrorists took over planes and crashed them into buildings? of course, that didn't work out for them, so there's no chance it may happen again, right? right?
The metal saws also make quite a lot of sense. You know, after a terrorist bombing (lets say in a bus) you need to get the wounded out. Sometimes metal is in the way. I'll let you do the math.

- digggggggggg, on 07/10/2008, -1/+7Yeah, it seems like the Chinese thing to do. Back in '99, when Taiwanese independence was all the rage, China held this huge military parade as part of their "national day", kinda like our fourth of july. It was obviously a show of force thinly guised as some sort of nationalistic thing.
- bronyraurstomp, on 07/10/2008, -9/+7I beg to differ. I think separatism is a very serious problem. I also think US interventionism is a very serious threat. We have all seen how the US intervenes in other countries internal affairs with no international backing and how disastrous their foreign policy has been.
Terrorism is not only felt in the US and Israel. Many of us have felt the State-sponsored terrorism dished out by the US with their CIA terrorist organization and their holier-than-thou attitude.
Why does the US have weapons as horrifying as every biological and chemical weapon known to man, not to mention not just overwhelming nuclear offensive capabilities, but also they are the ones who developed them first (the other countries just caught up with them) as well as actually unleashing such inhuman force upon other human beings.
Not to mention water-boarding.
So, we should all boycott the United States and criticize their foreign policy and make a big fuss out of everything they do, the same we like to do with China, Iran, Iraq(not any more) Venezuela, N. Korea, etc etc etc...- PrintScrn12, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1People do criticise many country's foreign policies, the US being popular. Not that, that has much to do with China's problems internally nor other countries' external problems. One does not excuse the other.
- p47plane, on 07/10/2008, -2/+3No kidding. I mean, if the terrorists decide to send thousands of jihad warriors charging into the stadium, then all these troops might be useful.
- geoboy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+11Yeah, really. This looks more like a sneak preview of the forces of the world's next super power. They're sending a clear message that it is futile to mess with China, whether you're a terrorist or a dissident or a foreign government.

- digggggggggg, on 07/10/2008, -1/+5I wouldn't put it past them. This is the same government that killed hundreds of students back in '89. Who would have expected them to use live ammunition against unarmed protesters?

- blakecr, on 07/09/2008, -1/+6You have to give the police state some cred. They look bad ass on those segways...

Yea, check out the team practicing the hurdles! - Archer007, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Note the keywords here: "exercises", "drills", "mock". These photos show nothing about actual security or readiness. Which is exactly what they were designed to do, of course.

- seomike, on 07/09/2008, -2/+3Hopefully they won't flamethrower any streakers or "Golden Casino" gorilla marketers
- btschul, on 07/10/2008, -3/+7I usually hate those ***** who go around criticizing people for misspelling words in comments, but I feel I must in this case, seeing as how the misspelling changes the entire meaning of the comment. gorilla = monkey, Guerrilla = an unconventional system of promotions on a very low budget. I would like to see an example of gorilla marketing, however.

- jlrobins, on 07/10/2008, -2/+27Oh my god, these photos are AMAZING.
- eouw0o83hf, on 07/10/2008, -1/+12Don't know why this was dug down, the photography really was spectacular. Governmental issues aside, apparently China knows how to raise photographers...

- theguesser10, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3Say what you will, but that was impressive.
- seraph582, on 07/10/2008, -7/+1HAHAHAHAHAHA
Impressive?
They'll be fighting "terrorists" with flamethrowers? Is this the 2008 olympics or the set of "Rambo XII: Terrorist Games?" And firemen w/ saws cutting through bars? When was the last time a "terrorist" took the time to weld iron bars into place to... ***** - why would they even want to do that? What in the piss are these people doing other than carrying out a propaganda campaign? That's like "MIlitary on Ice" instead of an effective "show on force." Far too much aesthetic, meaningless stuff in there. Oh and L O ***** L @ cops on segways. HAHAHAHAHA Impressive.... christ, are you ten?- InfernoX, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6Hey *****. When terrorist say detonate an explosive and a bunch of steelrods get lodged and there's innocent children trapped on the other side, they have to cut through it.
Flamethrower is obviously a scare tactic, no one will run at a guy with a flamethrower after he sprays it into the air. And I like the segway idea, say what you will about it but it allows the soldiers to focus on aiming and less on running.
- InfernoX, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6Hey *****. When terrorist say detonate an explosive and a bunch of steelrods get lodged and there's innocent children trapped on the other side, they have to cut through it.

- BelatedHero, on 07/10/2008, -2/+18Surface-to-Air missiles near the Olympic green?? Wow.
- cos2x, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3That doesn't surprise me at all. I still remember in the aftermath of 9/11, SAM's were deployed all around Washington DC. Even after the attacks, Rumsfeld had them deployed again. Seeing them at the Olympics this year doesn't seem like that far of a stretch.
- btschul, on 07/10/2008, -3/+21This is actually training in case any protesters show up. Or, in case someone utters an anti-communist comment while running the 400 meter dash.
- wastedfish, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0Haha If i were an athlete I would probably not say anything about politics, let alone during a race.
- Andyl194, on 07/10/2008, -2/+5there are so many ***** Chinese people...

- breckinshire, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Because there are so many Chinese people *****.

- 223Sniper, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5lol so cute! come on now guys, segways, seriously.
- whyufail, on 07/10/2008, -1/+14....I'm sorry but the machine gun+Segway thing just seems like the least tactically sound combination ever.

- Mattarang, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1Running+shooting=***** aim.

- 0Xonox0, on 07/10/2008, -0/+7I think the pictures of all the guys carrying small guns while riding segues is just one big sexual innuendo.

- IAmSam14, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Anyone else digg this for the segway police?
- Cpd4224, on 07/10/2008, -8/+2I cant believe no one has said this yet. Released by China huh? Did no one else think this, that almost every single one of these pictures is completely Photoshopped?!
Cmon! does that first picture look real at all? What is that? The 9th photo, the one with the firefighters, first of all that is SO many people. Second of all, isn't it kind of weird that every person standing on the field are in perfect focus?
I would think some or most of these were photoshopped to give the illusion of a large, controlled presence. That somehow China is soooo ready for olympics... look at this training they're doing, and look how many people they have! they sure are one great country! Lookin out for everyone and everything.
Am i crazy or did anyone else think that?- InfernoX, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4The first one looks fake I agree but the rest look legit. China has over a billion people, it's not unreasonable to think that they could get 100 or so in a few pictures.
- SpectreFire, on 07/10/2008, -0/+9No, you're pretty much ***** crazy.
- washerwoman, on 07/10/2008, -1/+0Nah! They AR e too smart for photo shopped! Never underestimate the power of a Chinese washerwoman
- washerwoman, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0Why is it blank? Nah! They a re too smart for photo shopped! Never underestimate the power of a Chinese washerwoman - never
- washerwoman, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0Hey Diggers! Thanks for letting me add my two cents. Now on to bigger and bette r things - like folding laundry, ironing, etc. e tc. I am r eally an old washerwoman who does not only her own laundry, but anybody else's who leaves t heir socks on my carpet!! Not happen as much as it once did - with two kids in th ei r 50's, one in 40's and two gr eat grandchillen out there in the ozone, my time se ems never to be my own! Moan, Moan Bye-Bye
- waydee, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Whats the gun the segway cavalry are carrying? I see one guy in the back with some sort of AK47 looking thing and another with a big sniper rifle (AWP? lol.) but I don't recognise the small gun.
- Tyrghast, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1the 'awp' is obviously too short to be a .50 cal sniper rifle. Hell, the recoil from an 'awp' would send you flying off the segway.
- gta3uzi, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1AWP's are .338 Lapua Magnum, iirc
Still one hell of a kick, though. - quarc, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0The recoil i think would push their balance back and thus, drive backwards.
- gta3uzi, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1AWP's are .338 Lapua Magnum, iirc

- ineptsavant, on 07/10/2008, -0/+28To those of you thinking it's overkill: I've been living in China for a few months now and it's hard to properly convey how important the Olympics are to them(students here about it every day on the announcments at school). They see this as their chance to show the world how they're catching up and if anything goes wrong it will cause them to lose "face"(a very important chinese concept of character). They are not risking anything. Seriously; I'm sure they have a Godzilla defense task force training right now, just in case Japan lets him out of his underwater bunker accidently. It may seem asinine to you, but to them.. the more they do to prepare they better off they will be in the eyes of the world. Oh... also those segway police might look dumb.. but they'll run you down with it at about mach one while gunning(they're not normal).
- m1zl3d, on 07/10/2008, -0/+7Activision calls it "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" but where's my Segway to go with my MP5 with a Red Dot Scope?
- McShr3dd3r, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Olympic hurdle jumpers will have nothing to jump over since the police cut all the hurdles in half with those buzz saws.
- jamesduh, on 07/10/2008, -4/+5Dugg for KFC......
i mean KCF. damn those chinese people and their bootlegs. :P- ZhangYing, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0Do not judge anyone, anything or any countries, if you don't know any damn *****, go back school, your brain is not washed completely yet.
- neurologik, on 07/10/2008, -3/+4they are tired of those damn mongolians breaking down their chity wall!

- baudbwoy, on 07/10/2008, -1/+3is that blood stains on their shields? I have friends headed to China for the big shindig and some are a little concerned but I think they'll be fine, the Chinese seem concerned about being embarrassed if something goes wrong with the Olympics so I think they'll have things on lock. Some of my friends are finding it difficult to get there passports so I can't imagine it will be easy for trouble makers to get in. I think what people will have to most likely be concerned about is the ability to catch the games on TV as even big media is having a hard time with all the "Red tape" and then there is the smog and pollution my friend who had to go to China earlier this spring for some sort of orientation mentioned that where the rowers will be competing that the water way was filled with algae, the same friend pointed out that in these water ways there is open air swimming, debuting this Olympics.
Although I support my friends 110% i do not believe China should have been awarded the games for there gross record of Human Rights violations and there destructive abuse of the planet.
China has got the world by the balls economically so we allow them to do as they wish to their people and foreigners who speak out, but has has to change and change starts with the man in the mirror...DO SOME *****!- Ortheos, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2Who are you to allow them to do anything? You can't police China, don't even try.
- washerwoman, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0And to whom must w e attribute this? Put in McCANE and we will have them all over us like flies on an all-day sucker!!
- btschul, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3Are they expecting an army of terrorists? It is totally obvious that these tactics are to discourage protesters. Flamethrowers? Yeah, that'll be helpful against a terrorist in a large crowd.
- inotocracy, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Do they really expect to be taken seriously when they swarm in on those segways?
- terencec, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1i think they want to take advantage of the 2 seconds of "WTF", and use that time to shoot down terrorists.
