youtube.com — This video went popular only to be taken down almost immediately. They said "Story was reported (General, 1-click bury) and subsequently removed by the Digg community." So it sounds like one person basically removed this story from digg.com. I was not aware one person could wipe out a thousand diggs, did you?
- 425 diggs
- digg it
- realweeklynews, on 07/22/2008, -3/+56I know that some of you really like this website and will bury this subject without really listening what this video says. I really wanted to like this site and I hoped that some of the videos I make on various subjects would have a chance to be seen by a larger audience. Unfortunately, with how my last submission was completely removed from this website, I cannot stand by and not address this issue. I tried to email them along with some other people that found out about this. They said the following in an email:
“Story was reported (General, 1-click bury) and subsequently removed by the Digg community.”
I have no idea what this actually means, but from what I can tell they basically had one person (1-click bury) kill this story completely off of digg. This is incredible to think that one person can come along and completely wipe out a story that now has well over a half a million views. It is currently ranked the number 1, all time, top rated video on youtube and one person just decided to up and kill this story on digg. Not to mention that this subject matter has well over a million views in just the top 2 videos on this very subject.
The reason why I am making a video on this subject is because I have been advertising and endorsing the dig website on my videos and thought digg was an excellent way to help spread the news on different subjects. This latest action showed me that the power of one person was able to wipe out the voice of a half a million people on youtube. This had to be addressed.
The last thing I ever wanted to do was publicly say anything negative about this site, but there is no way I cannot show people what happened here on this subject. I am sure this is not the only time this has happened either. I also know that there were many stories that were not made popular after receiving over 1,000 diggs. The sheer randomness of their system is disconcerting.
What happened here was so blatant. The fact that one person could single handedly kill a story like this, to me, destroys my impression of this site. They have a great concept, but this latest burying of a story could no be ignored.
The main point is, the people seemed to feel this was important and took the time to digg the story. The digg allowed it do be completely removed from any sort of visibility. Since these people took the time to go to their site because I sent them here to support, I should then be the person to let them know how digg erased their time and effort with one click, from one person.
If I get as much flame comments as I expect, it will show me I made the right decision with making this video. I hope that people will see this for what it is worth and not blindly flame this video or me. I also wanted to say to all the people that took the time to digg this video. Thanks for all the support. It was an important subject that you clearly supported, and this video was a small part of spreading awareness of this issue.- dre357, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10We had the same problem..These guys would love to hear from as many as possible, seeing as there's an investigation going on as we speak.
https://complaint.ic3.gov/Default.aspx- realweeklynews, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7I was wondering how long it would take for them to slap the:
"Warning: The Content in this Article May be Inaccurate
Readers have reported that this story contains information that may not be accurate."
Only digg themselves would be able to really make that statement. So it should read like this:
Warning: The Content in this Article May be Inaccurate
Digg just reported that this story contains information that may not be accurate.
I thought this was bad when someone slapped my Gold VS Dollar video with that. Now I know this is more of a badge of honor. I will just take this as a sign that I am not a sell out.
Digg could have just contacted me, but they are to busy trying to sell out to google. This site is in more trouble then I thought.

- chemrat, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9I know several others who have had this problem, mainly from blogs with liberal or libertarian viewpoints. They ended up being banned by DIGG after complaining.
I think you should fight this, and I'm on your side. However, there are many other voting/social networking sites and mechanisms, and you should use as many as you can. They may nearly all have some corporate giant behind them by now, but most are not as difficult to work with as DIGG, if you happen to pick a topic or viewpoint that they don't like.
I use InstaBlog (though I'm currently banned for reasons unknown), BlogCatalog, Redit, del.icio.us, stumbleupon, gather.com, facebook, hugg.com, care2.com, bloggingzoom (don't get many votes there), squidoo, others I can't think of right now, and my own main blogs (find me as chemrat in most of these places).
As I'm sure you know, people are more willing to reciprocate if you reach out by reading, commenting on their stuff, etc. I've had huge (for me) traffic influxes by making a relevant comment on someone's blog. So, fight DIGG, but don't make that your main cause. Keep your passion on target, which it very much was with your now-buried post, and we will vote for you wherever you post!
Best of luck, Jim
p.s. Hey, at least they noticed you! That speaks volumes about your effectiveness. I seem to get stuck at 40-50 DIGGs and just fade away after every submission.- realweeklynews, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Thanks for the post and support. I am not going to keep going on and on about t his subject. I have pretty much said what I needed to say. I will have to check out some other sites. As for getting banned from here, that is not something I am concerned about at all. That would just show everyone of my viewers exactly what they are all about, if they did something like that. Thanks again.

***** VIACOM! - jmkiii, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Do you have a screen shot "proving" that it just disappeared?
- realweeklynews, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Not only do I have a screen shot. I made a full video clicking around the site to prove it was virtually removed from all the searches. If you typed in viacom vs you before I made this last video, your could not get it to pull up. So I made sure to film a full length video showing how it was not searchable. Which is just short of completely deleting the content. This way there would be no doubt. Not to mention that there is a record of this in the comment section of that video.

- jmkiii, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Where?
- realweeklynews, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I have it saved on my computer. I digg really wants to dispute my claims I will be more then happy to produce it. I am not going to bother uploading it unless the people that own digg come directly at me and officially disputes this claim. They have not. So until they do, this is all I have to say about it. This video sums this up. You can still see for yourself by searching for viacom vs you on here unless they just made it searchable again.
- Bilabrin, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2What happened to this one? it was on top of upcoming...now, GONE!
- realweeklynews, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3You didnt seriously think this video and the digging of it would ever see the popular page. That was never going to happen. This video and posting of it here on digg was my way of letting people know what happened and how I do not endorse their site or use it anymore. This will be the last time I post on this site, and shortly after this video hits 2 days old I will never log on to digg again. I am just sticking around to see if they would actually address this situation, which I never expect them to.
- Bilabrin, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2@realweeklynews
I've seen articles critical of Digg and it's algortythm/process on the front page before but I think in this case it has to do with Viacom. Rose must be in talks with tham and left instructions to keep the front page clear of anti-Viacom articles.
Also, how do you challenge the accuracy of an article anyway? I have found no button which I have access to.
I've been impressed by Reddit. Less obnoxious trollery.
- robbwindow, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah I've been digging for two years and all my diggs have never mean digged. However days later the news is out in a different formatt from what always seems the same people. I watched a video last week of the founders who seem cool. However they suggested I looked to what is popular on Digg. Which to my dismay is where I found a few archives that rang a few bells. My work I do online is not about the money so I don't give a rats arse (Forgive my monement) however when you say what you do I feel cheated. If Viacom is responsible then I guess there's not much I can do, right?

- FascistNation, on 07/23/2008, -3/+7Amen. I have been bothered at times over the power that clearly some users (superusers?) have in burying submissions. Where a single bury can kill a submission. I also get the feeling at times that their "algorithm" has no rhyme or reason. Like the submitter here said, Digg can do whatever it wants with its site and the free market will prevail.
- maj0rm0j0, on 07/23/2008, -2/+6If Digg starts censoring because of content, then they will fall right in line with FoxNews and the rest of the MSM in my book. I don't want to believe you caved to Viacom!

There will be a whole new set of corporate shenanigans to root out. - rareimagery, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10I have experienced this and have just re-posted a story that was at the top of upcoming about Iraqi Vets. Buried at 18 hours at the top of digg. It picked up another 70 diggs after it was buried.

That's the bottom line. Anyone who thinks differently or thinks that right still wins over might or money, I hope you've learned your valuable lesson.
If this is how Digg reacts, you can only imagine what the government is capable of 'burying.' - thingamajig, on 07/23/2008, -2/+8OH YOU DIDN"T KNOW?? Digg management has always censored stories. The "democracy" talk is just a ploy to get people to use the website, they've always have the power to bury stories and they'll exercised it when they feel like it. It's all about the MONEY MONEY baby baby.
Summitter - you might like some of the stuff I've bookmarked

- jamesmcm, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8The 1 click-bury just means that too many people just hit bury (not specifying an option). Talk about jumping to conclusions.
- realweeklynews, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4So hundreds of people are just able to remove a story completely off of digg? Even remove it from searches? We all know the whole bury brigade that can go around and mass bury a topic. It is one thing to be able to lower the overall digg number, I could care less about that. What I do think is wrong is that they can actually kill a story completely. That I do have a problem with. Sometimes people can just bury a story because they dont like you personally and it has nothing to do with the story. There are haters everywhere. This system seems to encourage this type of behavior.
- allowners, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10The Constitution Dies Tomorrow
http://digg.com/political_opinion/The_Constitution ...
As this submission demonstrated, the B.S. about the complicated digg algorithm is just that The excuse in that case was there was not enough "diverse" support for the story, even as it passed 12 or 13 hundred diggs. I have personally not seen a story that ended up with more diggs, putting the shame to that lie. The books may not always be cooked, but I've little doubt they are in cases of importance to certain elite groups.
Free speech and democracy in the US work in a similar way. You have a right to your opinion, but those in control reserve the right to suppress or overrule it, if they fear any impact to their special vested interests by your executing this right. - FadieZ, on 07/23/2008, -13/+4Why the ***** does everything have to be a conspiracy to you people? It was most likely a bunch of fanatics burying the submission down, not some fascist cigar-smoking digg executives trying to censor you.
Get over it you goddamn crybabies.- britt48, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3crybabies? wow.

- frostyausty, on 07/23/2008, -9/+3Wow, That guy was annoying as ***** covered dog balls.
- akkadII, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4 This is bad for digg. No matter if is true and not; stories like this will continue, if something is not changed. People are frustrated when something original doesn't get popular, specially if they dugg it first. More, is frustrating when you see lousy stories being headlines while more interesting stories goes bye.
- digidigg, on 07/23/2008, -10/+1dumbest ***** ever...general 1-click bury you spammers...you should be banned b/c ur ignorant. it's a type of bury reason!!!!

- IronGoldfish, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7I've had enough of Digg. Not only is there blatant censorship, but the general intellect here is on par with a Grade 9 classroom. Look at the bloody comments to this video! I'm gone for good, and I'll see the rest of you (at least those of you intelligent enough to leave this place behind) on some other website. I don't know which one, but I will find a smart and balanced news/media/time-wasting site. If I don't find one, I'll make one, damn it.
See you on the other side.- realweeklynews, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Let me know the site and I am there with you. The only catch it how to generate traffic.
- thingamajig, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3I think that Digg management actually encourages the drive for more juveniles, literally, to their website because they are easier to advertise to and make the MONEY MONEY baby baby
- kemp34, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1I think stupid people are more easily duped into buying stupid *****.
- NavARXIDA, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Digg.com is a unique revolutionary idea but its not alone any more. MANY MANY sites including big well established companies like lets say yahoo.com have now sites similar to digg. SO, if digg (and i mean the selective few that are in that position) carries on burring stories from users IN A USERS SUBMITTING NEWS SITE, that could very well come back and bite them in the ass. My 5 cents.
- FrankHope, on 07/23/2008, -1/+9The digg bury system is broken. It needs to be fixed badly. Ron Paul stories for example are buried regularly. There are bury brigades. It should be easy to come up with an algorithm to detect the bury brigades and to lessen their impact. Buries should require a capcha so that bury bots are not possible. Bury statistics need to be publicly available along with digg statistics. Why can't we know how many buries a story currently has? Is this a way for digg administrators to bury stories? As long as this information is kept secret, conspiracy theories will abound.

If digg's excuse is it only take ONE person to CLICK "BURY" and the TOP STORIES are basically DROPPED... why doesn't EVERYONE that is FED-UP with this bs JUST click "BURY" on EVERY TOP STORY on DIGG'S home SITE?
If everyone here did this, digg would be forced to re-think there 1-click bury system.
