Era of cheap food ends as prices surge
business.timesonline.co.uk — Gordon Brown responded to mounting concerns about the global rise in food prices by signalling that he might scale back Britain ’s commitment to biofuels, which critics say has exacerbated the food crisis because land has been given over to grow crops for energy rather than food.

- edstate, on 04/23/2008, -0/+4This is what happens when Governments artificially mess with the price of things. Either through controls, or subsidies, or other legislative means. It creates economic "falsehoods" that put dangerous chinks in economies of all sizes. Sooner or later, those chinks must be worked out. And it usually sucks, because we've gotten used to the "artificial" way of doing things. Gas. Medical care. Education. You name it... HOUSING, to name another big one. We can't just keep futzing with what things cost without expecting some major ***** to happen. Am I the only one who took friggin' economics?!?
- LadyAmerica, on 04/23/2008, -0/+2Starving people, brought to you courtesy of AlGore, the U.N., and their useful idiot followers (both in the US and Europe). These fools have bought into the global warming insanity and forced radical and harmful economic changes, which is driving up prices!
If they had any brains they would be drilling for oil everywhere it could be found (Anwar, offshore US, etc.) and increasing refining capacity. That would lower oil prices and bring down the transportation costs of food.
Then, stop subsidizing bio-fuels. That would encourage farmers to grow food, not fuel-crops.
Wake up, US & Europe, from this insanity! - Edmundo, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Governments should stop subsidizing biofuels. Enough already.
