lohud.com — Higher gas prices affect us in all sorts of ways. This is an interesting look at how it's affecting the organizations and people who help the least fortunate among us.

- msheidi, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0At this point, you can blame the democrat congress, Pelosi and Reid for NOT moving forward to drill our domestic resources and make our nation indepencent of foreign oil.
Congress' approval rating 9% and dropping. Pelosi and Reid are utter failures. The white house has removed the freeze on the offshore drilling it is now in their court.

- cashman57, on 07/20/2008, -4/+18Our new Pontiac has not left the garage in months. We use my pickup which had been converted to use vegetable oil all the time. The good news is my insurance company discounted the Pontiac because we don't drive it.If gas prices never come down we will have a very low mileage Pontiac for sale.
- AmyVernon, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5that's awesome. i've seen some of these vegetable oil conversions, and i'm jealous...
- BoonTobias, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2i am interested in that low miles pontiac you got there, chief

- FaithclubDotNet, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7It hits from both sides. It costs more to do non profit stuff. And people have less money to donate to non profit causes.
- CindyMindy, on 07/21/2008, -3/+7Drill in Alaska. Screw the environment. I want cheaper gas! This planet is already ***** anyway.

We can drill for more oil. Or we can ride bikes and shiver all winter in the dark. While the Chinese laugh at us.
Those are the only choices. - msheidi, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0the only crude shortage is in the 9% approval rating of Congress. You notice that there is no comment on Bush's approval rating cause Congress' approval rating is flushing down the toilet. The crude prices are killing them.
- 140Suffolk, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1"The crude prices are killing them."
As they should. The Democrats have blocked drilling for decades. The result has been the transfer of untold billions to people who hate us. And $4.50 gas.

Last time I went to Church, I kept hearing our Pastor yak on and on about certain "needy" causes and people the Church was "giving" to only to find out after a few months of giving my tithe, the Church is now going to build a new gymnasium. Then they declared last week, they were also purchasing a brand new tour bus for road trips. The last straw was when the Pastor's wife drove up in a new Cadillac.
Now, how much of my tithe do you think actually went to helping the needy or feeding the Children?! There is no way of knowing how much the church really actually gave to the needy or hungry. They just say "trust us"?
Churches are in the business of scamming money just like anything else. Panhandlers in a Fancy building!
If you want to really help needy people then give your money directly to them or at least a credible charity, but never give your money to a Church!- duggdowncatisad, on 07/21/2008, -9/+3You have to have faith in the Church that the Church, by the will of God, will do the right thing. The faithful do not ask questions of their Church fathers; rather, they have faith in the will of the Lord.
- dildoolielly, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6------------------The faithful do not ask questions of their Church fathers-------------
And that is exactly why you idiots are so dangerous in large numbers and need to be eradicated ASAP.
Blind faith and refusal to consider people who demand evidence and have beliefs based in science and evidence as humans is probably the scariest ***** in the world.
What matters is evidence or lack thereof. You idiots come to the table with absolutely zero evidence for your astonishing, mystical, mythical "Bible-God" claims, tell me not to question your "faith" while embeding your filth into our political process while establishing law and you expect graciousness?
We are driven to war after war, violence on top of violence to appease madmen who believe in gory mythologies. These men are called Christians, Muslims and Jews.
When you educate yourself in history, psychology and world religion, you tend to see how ridiculous religions looks and why religion is the where it is today. It looks foolish from the outside but you cant blame people being religious when they were brainwashed from an early age and only studying one source.
Intelligent people will make rational decisions based on empirical evidence. Religious people just accept what they're told or what they were brainwashed into as children and never question it, giving the church/jeebus virtual dictatorial powers over them and everything in their lives.
And its about time reasonable, logical thinking people stop tip-toeing through Christian's psychotic brand of *****!!
BTW, American was NEVER a "Christian Nation". If most of you idiots made it through third grade History you would have known this already. - hartley, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4You do question your church, and you should question your faith, it will only make your beliefs stronger if you do question them.
And to the person above me, I'm pretty sure the puritans were christian, which is where most if not all of our morality laws come from. I think I'm pretty safe in assuming that the laws of a nation make up the beliefs of a nation. If it doesn't, it ends in a revolt/revolution. So yes, America is a christian nation, look at our money, our symbolism, and our own documents.
Also, Im pretty sure you are just as brainwashed by your science as some are by religion.
I doubt you've conducted tests on every scientific study you've ever come across. You're blindly believing what some guy in a flashy white coat tells you. Don't think you are better because of who is telling you your information.
Oh, and this is all coming from an atheist. - dildoolielly, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2---------------You do question your church, and you should question your faith, it will only make your beliefs stronger if you do question them.-----------------
Talking snakes, burning bushes, lakes of wine, Gay-bashing, daughter-selling, animal-burning, sinner-stoning...
Is that what you mean?

America would only be a “Christian Nation” in some sort of normative, moral, and political sense if the Constitution enshrined and established that as a matter of fundamental law and political principle. The Constitution actually does the exact opposite. Why, though, do you religious conservatives continue to behave as if the Constitution were Christian in character?
Our Nation's constitution clearly rebuttals the insanity behind your rhetoric.

"The Government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion."

BTW, Our money has "In God we trust." (well, it did after 1957)
Our pledge says "One nation, under God." (well, it did after 1954)

lol, you make all of science sound like one white-haired crazed Scientist imprisoned in some lab somewere. Gimme a break. BTW, Where do you get the Authority to speak? Let me guess, out of your ass?
Evolution is a real process whether you like it or not. No matter how many lies, mistruths, and non-sequiturs you spout here. Evolution is a real process even if you're offended by it. Evolution is a real process even if you feel it contradicts your religion. The fact of the matter is that evolution is a real process, a proven process - a real part of our objective universe. So, if Truth is something that matters to you, then you cannot 'disbelieve' in evolution or preach against it. Then again, if you don't care about lying, deceiving, and misleading others, then you can obviously do and say whatever you want - regardless of whether it's true or not.
Evolution is biology, the evidence is there for it. The evidence for creation? All you can come up with is 'look around'? Not science, sorry.
------------------Oh, and this is all coming from an atheist.-----------------------
Sure, you are
- dildoolielly, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6------------------The faithful do not ask questions of their Church fathers-------------
- angryfirelord, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3It depends on what church you go to. Some of the big megachurches (mostly on the Catholic side) do run it more as a business instead of a charity. However, my church is a smaller one and does often have trouble meeting the heating bills, but my pastor has never actually ranted on about the "needy causes" and instead squandered away the money for something useless. In addition, the UMC has a good history of helping out the cause.
- dildoolielly, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3You're being conned. The math doesn't lie, heres an example:
Compare the income of any medium to large church to the budget of your average local soup kitchen. Multiply that by about 1,000,000
We have about 250 churches around here and about 3 soup kitchens.
Have you ever actually even researched the income of your average med/big church? You can't because most don't have to report their earnings or pay taxes that help the local communities.
Churches drain communities of their charity and buy up infrastructure on taxless land raising everybody else's property taxes.
Really look it up sometime. I am sure you will.

- hartley, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Apparently it didn't affect Gore and his family at his speech in DC the other day.
- jerbaker, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4I think it's important for people to realize what's really going on here. Every time you read a story about how record fuel prices are causing some problem, remember to follow the money. When a non-profit is short on money because of higher fuel costs, remember that the non-profit is low on money because that money is now sitting in Exxon-Mobil's bank account. When Meals on Wheels can't afford to deliver as much food to as many needy seniors as they used to, keep in mind that it's because Meals on Wheels' budget is sitting in Exxon-Mobil's bank account. When airlines are canceling flights to smaller cities around the United States, and it's getting more difficult and more expensive to visit these places, that's because of how much money is sitting in Exxon-Mobil's bank account. When Americans stop buying American-made cars, and cities like Detroit drift even further into the economic abyss, it's because their money is sitting at Exxon-Mobil. The oil companies are robbing our society and our culture blind, and our government is only interested in helping preserve that ability.
- MildApplause, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3Oil prices are set on futures, and if we can increase the supply, or even if congress will just allow us to drill more so we can increase the supply, the future price of oil will be speculated to go down and give our economy some relief in the near future.
That'll buy some time for the auto manufacturers to get onto building cars that use alternative forms of fuel and allow us to work on delivery methods so consumers can buy new, different fuels.- msheidi, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1It is in Congress's court. Their 9% approval rating should speak volumes to everyone.
- 140Suffolk, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4Why is this news? Gas prices went up. Everyone who buys ANYTHING pays more. Duh.
The point is that this is a self-inflicted wound. We have plenty of oil. If the Democrats get out of the way and allow us to drill for it.
Yes, I know. "We can't drill our way out of this problem" Huh? If you're hungry, then eating will help. If you're thirsty, then drinking will help. If we drill in Anwar, in the Gulf, and off the east and west coasts that will put a ton more oil in the pipeline. Presto! The price comes down. Problem solved. - 140Suffolk, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Why is this news? Gas prices went up. Everyone who buys ANYTHING pays more. Duh.

THE BALL IS NOW IN CONGRESS' COURT. WILL THEY START MAKING US A LITTLE LESS DEPENDENT ON FOREIGN OIL OR WILL WE CONTINUE TO SPEND A SMALL FORTUNE EVERY TIME WE GO TO GAS UP
This nation used to be self sufficient. We have handed our power to anyone willing to take it and opened to borders for anyone willing to arrive here and sign up for welfare. SAD. very sad. - WakeRider, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Some good news!! The price of oil is actually FALLING. This could either be insignificant fluctuation or the oil bubble is finally starting to burst. Decide for yourselves.
