- hairypothead, on 05/13/2008, -57/+13Unlimited, Unrestrained Stupidity. I'm guessing Myanmar could be compared to some kind of an alternate reality America where Hillary actually beat Obama - see where that would have lead us?
- avengingturnip, on 05/13/2008, -21/+7And if Obama wins, then Zimbabwe is the model?
- rshnrocket85, on 05/13/2008, -3/+15This is not a political debate. It's a story about Google's charity, even-though they are banned by the ones who they are helping. I thought I would explain that, it seems to me you lost the point.

- GRX3000, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I hereby issue hairypothead the "Idiot of the Day" award. I would give him the "Idiot of the Century" award, but that goes to the Myanmar government.
- smartazz, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6hairypothead, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

- lornefs, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1It's unblocked because Google bent over and is filtering content in China.
When you run the ISPs it's easy to block anything you want.

- GRX3000, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4Not really... America will be too afraid to go after a regime-change in Myanmar. Reason? Global opinion, simply put.
- MarkusGarvey, on 05/13/2008, -4/+2but the way the regime over there is handling this situation is despicable!...they are just letting their poorest most vulnerable people die, from what i see is an easy way for them to get rid of them they deem "Undesirable"...just like the in New Orleans after Katrina...i think and hope that the global community will exert so much pressure on them that they will fall from power and be tried for crimes against humanity...
- sleepysteve, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Buried for, "just like the[sic] in New Orleans after Katrina." Kanye West makes some nice songs to listen to, but don't let him dictate your views on society. Katrina wasn't about, "getting rid of the undesirable." Katrina was about 'de facto' segregation causing a seemingly-one-sided disaster in a city that should never have been built there. I'm sick of hearing people say the American government is out to get us and all this conspiracy *****. Bush is a moron for sure, but use your damn head before you accuse our nation's government of essentially committing genocide on its own people.
Now that I got that off my chest, this article has reaffirmed my belief that google is a hell of a company. It's great to see such a successful business really try to use their money and influence in a good way. Tip of the hat for Google

- chrishiggins, on 05/13/2008, -0/+15Sadly, the money will probably end up in the hands of the government and be used to fuel more repression.
- Spuy767, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Exactly. The Government of Myanmar has been begging for aid, but they want it delivered to them, and not directly to the people.
- JonnyMark, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Why don't any of you read?
"Google has offered to match donations made to UNICEF and Direct Relief International"
They're not giving the money to the government. Do you seriously think you're smarter than an entire company?
- ep53, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2All these people saying it will just go to the government, at the end of the day its a gesture from a multi $ billion company. They can do what they want with it, albeit it would be nice if it went to the people, its not YOUR money being spent.
- PeppermintPig, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Of course it's their money, and they can spend it however they like. But there should be no illusions about where the money is going.
If a person sends money to a corrupt organization, I would expect people to be critical. I'd even expect some people to make irrational critiques for all kinds of things that big business does, whether or not they're justified.

Now let me be an ass and say... why the hell are we giving them money? Are they even allowing us and other countries into Myanmar to help yet?
This is kind of like giving money to a homeless guy when you know he will just go by drugs or alcohol. Their government is not going to use this money to help their people!!!- Rikkochet, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5I usually strongly disagree with that, but I'm definitely with you on this one.
We've seen enough newsreels of some foreign supplies arriving in Burma and then being 'seized by the military for distribution'.
Um, what? ***** that, I don't trust that a dime of what I'm contributing is going to anything but a corrupt military's stockpile (you know, in case the riots get worse) and I'm not biting. I'd sooner donate to disaster relief in China, and I despise their government. - Fozefy, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3I was thinking that as soon as I read the article. While these people need to be helped, just giving money to the military government isn't helping them any. Which is exactly where this money is going to go.
- VeganTnT, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4While I agree with you on the government of Myanmar not looking out for the best interest of their people... I do have a question...
what's this "why the hell are WE giving them money?" stuff coming from?
WE aren't giving them anything
Not a single penny is coming from my pocket
Not a single penny is coming out of my taxes
This is Google's money and they can do with it as they please.
They want to help and that's it.
All we can do is commend them for taking the high road that we probably wouldn't travel ourselves- GRX3000, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3While not the intent or even the subject of this article, any American citizen by proxy is giving money to any country the WFP donates to, as well as money America donates to said country.... which since America is donating to Myanmar and WFP is donating to Myanmar, you'll get the idea.
- Rikkochet, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5I usually strongly disagree with that, but I'm definitely with you on this one.

Google is leading quite a bit by example.- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0How is this LEADING? Do you really think that they are the only (or first) company to do this? Microsoft donated hundreds of millions of dollars a year to various charities.
- Shots, on 05/13/2008, -0/+16Since Myanmar is not allowing entry to foreign aid workers, how do we know the money is going to the citizens, and not being deposited into some Swiss Bank account for some fat Junta Pig.

- zackk, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1The money you gave might not go to cyclone-hit people in Myanmar. Most likely it will go to Junta and will be used for the soldiers instead. If you donate, please make sure to ask the people who accept your donation.
- zackk, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1The money you gave might not go to cyclone-hit people in Myanmar. Most likely it will go to Junta and will be used for their own good instead. If you donate, please make sure to ask the people who accept your donation.
- yedrellow, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1How will the money reach the Junta anyway?
Isn't it quite rare for aid organisations to give money to governments directly?- lornefs, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1As has been seen in other backward opressed places in the world, the aid organizations bring in the needed medicine and supplies only to have them stolen by the army and distributed to the soldiers.
- Dylan47, on 05/13/2008, -2/+6its not like they have internet anyway.
- mitopontillas, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1oh... did they know what they are doing..? How to banned Google anyway?
- codo678, on 05/13/2008, -3/+3Good for them, now they should get unbanned for that. I wouldn't live anywhere google is blocked, google = FT freakin' W
- kipmartin, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4my respect for google just went up two or three notches.
- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Does your respect for any huge company go up 2-3 nothces when they donate money? Hell, your respect for Microsoft must be through the roof.
I am not knocking google. Just fanboys like you who think that them doing this is so much better than when Microsoft does it.- Majink, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2You jump to conclusions a lot don't you? kipmartin did not in any way infer any higher amount of like or dislike for either google or microsoft. I don't see how his comment makes him a fanboy for either side, for all you know kipmartin could be a microsoft lover but felt the need to display a new found respect for google. I agree with OP as my respect for google has gone up too, purely down to the fact that they generously gave $1 million to a country who has banned use of their products and services.
- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Does your respect for any huge company go up 2-3 nothces when they donate money? Hell, your respect for Microsoft must be through the roof.
- mm911, on 05/13/2008, -3/+3I wonder if the 9/11 conspiracists could take a break from hating their own government and take a look at what's going on in Myanmar. Clearly this was a terrible tragedy and many people died, but without any aid workers from inside or outside the country, how do they have any idea what the numbers are? I suspect the numbers are vastly inflated to boost donations, and the junta is going to keep most of them.
- eFiniTi, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Huh? What does this have to do with 9/11 conspiracists?
- Tyrghast, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Why does google have to be an ethical corporation that plays nice with others and treats its employees like real, flesh-and-blood people?
- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1You are very ignorant.

- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1You are very ignorant.
- rjghwruigvyoy, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4even though 1million is like pocket change to google.... i think its the principle of what they're doing that matters the most....
- Digitalfilm43, on 05/13/2008, -10/+6It's nice of Google (1 million to them is a drop in the bucket), but the only reason they did that was for PR reasons. So everybody says, "google is a great company, they were banned and they STILL gave them money." Like most of you have said here. It's not like it was from the good of their hearts. Plus, it's probably a tax write-off as a "charitable donation" or something. Whenever most for-profit company's donate money, it's done because they have something to gain by doing so.
- santaliqueur, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10Probably a tax write off? You can bet your ass it is. Why do you think most companies donate in the first place? Google is no different. It's a very nice gesture in my opinion.
- chanop, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I'd much rather see Google get a tax write off sending money to donations, than to our government in which it goes to prostitutes and blow
- santaliqueur, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Yes, it is well known that our government offices are staffed with prostitutes, fueled by coke.
I know what you're trying to say, but you need to get better at it.
- santaliqueur, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Yes, it is well known that our government offices are staffed with prostitutes, fueled by coke.
- chanop, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I'd much rather see Google get a tax write off sending money to donations, than to our government in which it goes to prostitutes and blow
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6... But I'm pretty sure their donation has done something. That, my friend, hurts nobody.
- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Yes, they get good PR...but I love it when children who watch too much TV just say "It is a tax write off." as if that means that it doesn't cost them anything. Do you not understnad what a tax write off is? (Since TV rarely gets into it in depth.) All a charitable donation does is reduce your earnings. So, let's say that Google is paying 35% in taxes. (probably not as large companies always get the big tax breaks while the small ones have to pay through the nose.) That means that their total revenue is decreased by $1 million. Therefore, they have to pay $350,000 less in taxes. But they are still out $650,000 in profits due to this donation.
- thingnumber2, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1I think what you need to understand is that regardless of their motivation, it's still the right thing to do, and a very good thing. Also, Google donating ANYTHING to anybody for any reason is seen by the public, it's not as if they're sounding their own trumpet in this case.
- santaliqueur, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10Probably a tax write off? You can bet your ass it is. Why do you think most companies donate in the first place? Google is no different. It's a very nice gesture in my opinion.
- have, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0Keep donating money. It is all for a good cause.
- coffee200am, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2We don't even know if the money or actual aid is going to the people. Could be going into the pockets of the generals and Myanmar government
- Bianca88, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0I was thinking the same thing. The people at google are better than me because i wouldn't have given them a damn thing because the govt there has been nothing but rude to everyone who is trying to help and it is sad
- Duncan3, on 05/13/2008, -2/+0So THAT is who is clicking all those adwords! Wooohoo! Go Myanmar! Cause we sure know it's not anyone on this continent.
- fcrow, on 05/13/2008, -5/+5I dreamed last night that digg had its new comment system up and I was able to see how many times this comment was giving a thumbs up and down. Shows what a geek I am ~)
- chanop, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2trust me when I say it's the "thumbs down"
- Lazydriver, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2Trust me that it says Thumbs None.
- TBBucs, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Here, let me help you: it's currently at -1.
- chanop, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2trust me when I say it's the "thumbs down"
- LittleGerms, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2God, that's like a slap in the face. In a good way. Owned.
- Phyrex, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1The military junta of Burma/Myanmar will happily take 95% of the donation, or reject it if they cannot. That government is the most f***ed up one I have ever seen in my life.
- jfossboss, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1I think google could provide a compelling alternative to our current system of government.
- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0your life sucks.
- weech, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0And you base this off what? Free lobster in the cafeteria? Well, they are storing all your personal info indefinitely so they're off to a good start.
Hundreds of organizations and companies donate $ and services in such cases of natural disasters around the world.
Hooray for Google ! /sarcasm
- jerrycurley, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7Wow! Google does this and it is SOOOO cool of them. Microsoft donates something and half the comments are "That ***** Gates just wants good publicity! ***** *****! He should give money to people that need it more!"
- Lazydriver, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Gates does a great job with charities. The difference is, he's got a monopoly. But at the rate Google's growing, so will they.
- iamnobody8614, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly. It has plenty of competitors for all of its products, just none that are as successful as they are.
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1While I admire Gates on his charities, I suggest you to search Netscape.
- jerrycurley, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0This isn't 1997. If tey still had a monopoly, the government would be all over hteir asses still.
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1While I admire Gates on his charities, I suggest you to search Netscape.
- weech, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Are you retarded? MS is the leader in ONE industry--software. What do you call Google's 60%+ market share in search advertising vs. MS and Yahoo's combined 30%? That's not a monopoly?
- iamnobody8614, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly. It has plenty of competitors for all of its products, just none that are as successful as they are.
- SuminderJi, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Gates is a good human in essense (though I don't know him personally...)
- Lazydriver, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Gates does a great job with charities. The difference is, he's got a monopoly. But at the rate Google's growing, so will they.
- richardPM, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5myanmar - sounds like some kind of candy bar
- hiro, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7Burma
- nomadbea, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Ban google? That's almost funny.
- liljay2k, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1people don't ban Google, Google bans people
- WoollyMittens, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6The corrupt government will keep the money for themselves, then blame the evil west for not helping the people. At least, that is how it always goes.
- paisit, on 05/13/2008, -3/+2Why ban google?? not make sense
- Coffeedemon, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Google might actually provide a link between people in countries that are controlled by the military (or whatever restricitve regime) and information that might wake them up to the state of their country. Control the flow of information and you can control your population's minds.
- usherzx, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Way to go Google!
Kill'em with kindness.
It never fails. - thomasprebble, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Doing this of course has it's PR advantages but good on them - Myanmar is better off with it than without it. Cheers!
- aastanistreet, on 05/13/2008, -1/+15FYI calling it Myanmar legitimizes the military government...its Burma
- mrjhmm, on 05/13/2008, -2/+5On 18 June 1989, the military junta passed the 'Adaptation of Expressions Law' that officially changed the English version of the country's name from Burma to Myanmar
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burma- slantyeyed, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3is there any legitimacy to a law passed by any illegitimate govt?
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1... while it's neither authorized by the people (who, mind you, still refer to it as Burma in English, which is the colloquial term in Burmese) or admitted by major English-speaking countries.
- DestroyFascism, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Mafia state...
- slantyeyed, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1i don't think anyone can point to burma on a map.
- mrjhmm, on 05/13/2008, -2/+5On 18 June 1989, the military junta passed the 'Adaptation of Expressions Law' that officially changed the English version of the country's name from Burma to Myanmar
- robthom, on 05/13/2008, -5/+2Most liberals foolishness is infinite.
- DestroyFascism, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2So if you get hit by a truck Ill just stare and point then shall I?
- orlyfactor, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1It's a tax writeoff for them, and a very, very small portion of their coffers. I think it's good, but please, they aren't up for sainthood because of it. They get good PR and a tax break. More than worth the money for them.
- Malarie, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1Google made $4.23 billion in Q3 of 2007... 1 million is great for a poor country, thats for sure, but still... Its just loonies for G.
- kristov, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2So how much money is actually getting to the people who need help vs. the regime keeping it for themselves?
Maybe 1 out of every million dollars actually makes a difference?
I do not see the point of throwing money into the pockets of the ruling class over there. - slantyeyed, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2does anyone really think google's (or anyone else's) $1 million will actually get to the people who need it? it'll be just like food and money shipments to africa, it'll just get swooped up by the govt or local warlord.
- Coffeedemon, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Better not to try at all right?
- ansatsu29, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Myanmar is currently ruled by a bunch of BONEHEADS (military junta)...stupid enough to ban Google...and not even delivering proper aid to its citizens...Anyways, its great to hear the Google is kind enough to send them donations...Hope that the boneheads use it to aid their citizens not for themselves...
- MooNinja, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Great move on Google's part, as a stockholder I am impressed.
- liljay2k, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1oh cool, u own 2 shares
- prleet, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Here is a solution but it is little bit extreme but extreme cases requires extreme measures.
1. Get all the civilians to one part of the country and nuke the ***** out of the military. -
