Hostages Were Chained by the Neck for Years & Slept in Mud
cnn.com — They were chained by their necks as punishment -- sometimes to a tree or post -- other times to each other. Food was scarce, conditions were deplorable and sickness was frequent during their years of captivity in the Colombian jungle. There was a time, newly freed hostage Ingrid Betancourt said, when she realized she could die.

- Stevanoski, on 07/04/2008, -3/+1Not that I saw. But I work 10 to 11 hours a day so could easily have missed it.

- peoplerstoopid, on 07/04/2008, -0/+6And yet people here will still be more outraged at America for using waterboarding to get information off of enemy combatants and terrorists. These people were treated like this for years, with no word to the outside about their wherabouts. I applaud their release and hope the media leaves these people and their families alone, they've been through enough and don't need to become the AP's next circus attraction.
- Carnivale, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I don't have a problem with using force to get answers out of people if the facts surrounding their capture support knowledge of terrorist ties. Unfortunately I don't have faith that the government has solid facts and basis for the captivity of several of the enemy combatants, so torturing them would be worthless and downright cruel.
I'm glad these people are from Colombia and it's a shame that they had to endure what they did. They are strong people to make it through that sort of violence and degradation.

- Masternajee, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5It is amazing how people complain about torture yet we see what our "enemies" do to their captives. I might not be a tremendous fan of him politically, but listen to how John McCain and his comrades were treated. Deplorable.
- specialK16, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2@peoplerstoopid and Masternajee: I'm sorry but you two are both idiots. This story has nothing to do with that. Please try to focus on something else than yourself and your country.
