Wedding reception at Michigan gallery turns into melee.
LAKESIDE, Mich. - Newlyweds Andy and Ania Somora will probably never forget their wedding reception at Burnison Galleries in Lakeside, Mich., on Saturday.
Neither will the police, the county prosecutor or gallery owners Tom and Judi Burnison, all of whom are still trying to figure out exactly what happened, and how the celebration of a marriage went out of control.
Among those arrested were the bride and groom - both of whom a witness said were Tasered by police - and the groom's father.
According to a prepared statement issued Monday by the Chikaming Town-ship Police Department, the Burnisons contacted the department just before midnight, complaining some of the guests at a large wedding party at the gallery had become unruly.
When Officer Jeff Enders arrived, the Burnisons asked that he assist them in ending the celebration, as it had gotten "out of hand," the statement said, "with broken glasses on the floor, along with liquor and water spilled all over."
As photographer and friend of the bride Kacper Skowron of Chicago recalled, Enders told the wedding guests they had one of two options: Leave immediately or face the possibility of arrest.
"Some of the wedding guests tried to talk to the police, saying things like, 'Please don't do it, we have a legal document that protects our right to be here'," Skowron said. "Little by little, however, the situation escalated."
When Enders told the crowd of more than 100 that the party was over, some of the guests became "very upset," prompting Enders to call for help. And he got plenty, as a total of 14 police agencies responded to the call for assistance.
Although most of the guests left the reception peacefully, police reported some continued to be disorderly, swearing at police. A few actually tried to engage the officers physically. By the time the situation was brought under control, three officers reportedly were assaulted, resulting in the arrests of four males and one female.
Charges include assault and battery, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction of police officers and damage to property. Police said the names of the arrested will be released after their arraignment, which is set for today.
A wedding guest who asked not to be identified said the Sonoras, who live in Durango, Colo., are former Chicago residents who decided to host their wedding reception in Harbor Country because one of their parents - she wasn't sure which - used to own a summer home here, and they thought it would be "a fun thing to do." - JKap, on 08/11/2008, -1/+7Taser = state sponsored torture = state sponsored terrorism
