Iraq War Could Cost U.S Taxpayers $2.7 Trillion
money.cnn.com — In addition to the cost of war, taxpayers pay for rising veteran health care costs, and returning soldiers faced with foreclosure and unemployment. As the Iraq war continues with no clear end in sight, the cost to taxpayers may balloon to $2.7 trillion by the time the conflict comes to an end, according to Congressional testimony.

- topangea, on 06/12/2008, -0/+4Don't worry, our return on investment is right around the corner. So far we've secured record oil prices and the affection of the international community. Next up: a faltering US economy!
Oh, wait...- chase001, on 06/13/2008, -0/+3The return on investment is going to private companies at the people's expense.
- ProgressBar, on 06/12/2008, -0/+5If US electricity usage averages 11.4kW per person, and we have a population of 304 million, that’s 3.47 GW. The world’s largest solar power station in Portugal generates 45 MW and cost approximately $500 million to build.
So… assuming we replace our ENTIRE power grid with these solar plants, we would need about 78 of them. That’s a total cost of $39 billion.
That’s only 1.44% of $2.7 trillion.
Am I way off target here? - webtrends, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2Around 5 million people die every year from hunger.
If you gave each one of those people $20000 each (which in many of the countries where the most are dying would probably last for a couple years OR fund farms and other infastructure )we would still have 2.6 Trillion, according to google. (2.7 trillion minus one hundred billion = two trillion six hundred billion)
So minus out the $39 billion for our Solar Power Grid and we still have around 2.56 Trillion (if my math is right)
two trillion five hundred sixty billion
Anyone else have something they could spend the money on to save the planet and it's people? - NICU, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1It hasn't cost tax payers anything yet - my taxes haven't gone up to pay for this war. The money was borrowed from China and other countries. We're going to owe that $2.7 trillion plus interest. And by 'we' I mean our children and grandchildren.
- angusm, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1At what point does the cost of invading a foreign country to defend yourself against imaginary nuclear weapons exceed the cost of actually getting nuked?
- suzywang3000, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1that's nothing compared to what Obama's grandiose redistribution campaign is going to cost you.
- h0ser, on 06/13/2008, -0/+1People should be able to choose where they tax dollars go. If people thuoght health care was more important, they could have the majority of their taxes go there, if poeple thought war was more important, then the majority of taxes would go there. It would definitely pay for the things that Americans consider priorities and not pay for the governments secret agenda.
